Bio

My name is Luke Graham, and I am a Freshman at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma. I strive to improve myself every day, both physically and mentally, while pursuing entrepreneurship and photography. Although my path is not set in stone, I have found purpose in helping others through volunteering and spreading acts of kindness. High school was tough for me, but I have managed to overcome my issues and will continue to learn more skills that I can use to create a successful business and help those in need. The world seems to be falling apart right now, and I want to be one of many people trying to maintain peace and help lift those who are less fortunate. I am thankful for everything God has given me, and I am thankful for the opportunity to continue my education. I like to go out and take photographs using either my iPhone or my DSLR digital camera, spend time out in the forests of New Hampshire where my parents live, and drive my 1996 Jeep Cherokee. I also love competition and will do whatever it takes to win. I see competition as a form of communication. It tells people what you're capable of, and allows you to grow as a person. My father is an Air Force veteran and has served in the branch for 33 years, where he achieved the rank of Major. He has taught me to never let anyone bring me down and has guided me through life using the skills he learned from the military.

I get involved in my community because I see the struggles that people face every day. It's like the world is doing a balancing act on a tightrope, and some folks are barely holding on. There's homelessness, poverty, and a whole bunch of other things creeping up everywhere, and it's like the world is unraveling in front of us. You know, it's not just about seeing the problems; it's about doing something about it. I believe in God's love and action. I think spreading that love is as simple as lending a hand to those in need. I've seen it in action with an organization called Food For Children in Manchester, New Hampshire. We distribute food – dairy, sweets, produce, bread, you name it – to people who are struggling. It's a little way of saying, "Hey, we're here for you." All that food we give out is donated by kind-hearted folks and grocery stores trying to do good. It's like turning about-to-expire food into a lifeline for those who need it. It's not just about preventing waste; it's about preventing hunger, one loaf of bread at a time. Seeing the smiles on the faces of those people we help – it's like watching a sunrise after a storm. These are folks who, despite everything, have the biggest hearts. It's inspiring to be a part of something that makes a real difference, even if it's just a small ripple in the grand scheme. I've come to believe that anyone can be a force for good. It's not about waiting for someone else to fix things; it's about taking the initiative. Dreams of becoming a world influencer might sound lofty, but it starts with actions on the ground. You see, greatness isn't reserved for a select few; it's a journey open to anyone willing to take a step forward. We can't afford to be spectators while others suffer. It's like being on a team – if one player is struggling, everyone has to step up. Because if we don't, the game turns into chaos, and no one wins. I believe we're at a crucial point in humanity, and it's up to us, living beings, to spark a new Renaissance. Imagine turning this dark age into an era of light and positivity. It's not just wishful thinking; it's a call to action. We have the power to be architects of change, rebuilding our communities, and by extension, the world. So, let's be that spark, that small flame that turns into a blazing fire of kindness and compassion. It's not just about surviving; it's about thriving together. In this journey, each of us plays a vital role – a part in crafting a brighter future, one where hope triumphs over despair, and every act of kindness is a stepping stone toward a better world.

College is on the horizon, and my chosen field of study is a unique blend of business and photography. Although the specific business degree is yet to be determined, and my interest in photography might evolve, this combination reflects my passion for creativity and a desire to make a positive impact on the world. The entrepreneurial spark ignited in my junior year of high school when I realized the pressing need for solutions to global issues like the environment, war, poverty, and famine. Recent events worldwide have heightened my awareness of the daily struggles faced by many, and it struck me that significant change is required. Witnessing the insufficient efforts of large corporations to address these problems fueled my determination to pursue entrepreneurship. The prevailing issue of some corporations neglecting their social responsibility disturbs me deeply. While some contribute generously, others fall short, and this stark contrast fuels my desire to make a difference. My vision is clear – to establish a business that not only thrives but also actively contributes to charitable causes and research organizations. I intend to donate a substantial portion of the earnings to those in dire need, seeking to alleviate suffering globally. This commitment is not merely a response to external challenges; it is deeply personal. I've faced my own struggles, battling through both mental and physical health issues that sought to confine me to my bed. However, surveying the state of the world has given me a renewed sense of purpose. Overcoming my hurdles has equipped me with resilience and determination, essential traits for navigating the challenging terrain of entrepreneurship. Success in this venture, I believe, hinges on mastering the necessary skills to manage a business effectively. I am actively developing these skills and simultaneously addressing my health concerns through a dedicated journey of self-improvement. Being a successful entrepreneur is not just about managing external factors; it starts with mastering oneself and understanding how one reacts to challenges. The ability to handle stress under pressure, effective communication to convey ideas persuasively, and relentless determination to achieve goals are crucial aspects of managing a business, especially one with a global influence. I am confident that with continuous personal and professional development, my business will not only succeed but also contribute significantly to improving the lives of billions worldwide. Photography, though potentially a minor, adds another dimension to my pursuit. The emotional impact of photographs depicting current global issues is undeniable. While my interest in photography may evolve due to scalability concerns, its potential to amplify the emotional resonance of various situations remains a driving force in my academic journey. In essence, a successful life, for me, is one where I have made a tangible and positive impact on the world. It involves not only personal achievements but also contributing to the welfare of others. Through the amalgamation of business, philanthropy, and the emotional power of photography, I aspire to create a legacy that transcends individual success, reaching and benefiting communities globally.

Life is a wild ride, and the twists and turns it throws at us can redefine who we are and shape our future aspirations. In my rollercoaster of experiences, one significant hurdle stood out and left an indelible mark on my journey over the last four years - my severe Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This discovery wasn't just a diagnosis; it was a game-changer that altered the course of my life. ADHD, a constant, heavy weight strapped to my body, remained undetected until January 2022. It became a formidable adversary, especially when combined with my unchecked use of social media and video games. This toxic mix wreaked havoc on my well-being, turning my Xbox One S from a mere gaming console into a dictator that ruled my life and influenced my behavior. Hours turned into days, and I found myself neglecting crucial aspects of life - exercise, homework, and genuine social interactions. The consequences were far-reaching, both physically and mentally. As I spiraled into the digital abyss, my aggression soared, and reckless in-game purchases became a regrettable norm. My health suffered with severe eye strain, headaches, and an insidious brain fog clouding my teenage years. The introduction of a smartphone in 2018 only exacerbated my troubles, exposing me to the addictive allure of platforms like TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat. These digital overlords waged war for my attention, wreaking havoc on my developing brain. By the time high school beckoned, the fallout was evident - social anxiety, lost friendships, and deepening depression became burdens I carried. Unbeknownst to me, these struggles only intensified my ADHD symptoms, eventually leading to a diagnosis at the age of 16 in January 2022. It was a pivotal moment, a wake-up call that forced me to confront the demons I had allowed to thrive. In the face of adversity, I took a courageous step. I severed ties with social media, bid farewell to lengthy gaming sessions, and embarked on a journey of self-recovery and rediscovery. The road wasn't easy, and breaking free from addiction demanded a profound commitment. I acknowledged the toll my choices had taken on my academic performance, disappointing teachers, friends, and, most significantly, my worried parents. Yet, amidst the struggle, there was a silver lining. Despite the agonizing journey, I managed to maintain a 95 cumulative GPA throughout high school. The commitment to self-improvement became a beacon of hope, pushing me to reshape my lifestyle. I embraced exercise through cardio and weight training, overhauled my diet, and prioritized healthy sleeping habits. Overcoming addiction wasn't just about defeating digital indulgence; it was a crash course in resilience, self-discipline, and decision-making. The battle against my mind forged newfound wisdom, transforming setbacks into stepping stones for personal growth. Through sheer determination, I emerged from the darkness, proving to myself and those around me that even with ADHD, I could conquer challenges that once seemed insurmountable. As I continue navigating life's complexities, my commitment remains unwavering - to strengthen my mind and face whatever comes my way. This journey has led me to pursue entrepreneurship after college, as well as photography and other art forms, something which I discovered during this journey. However, as I evolve, so may these interests. My journey is a testament to the transformative power of perseverance, self-reflection, and the unwavering belief that success, even with ADHD, is within reach. Each day is an opportunity to build upon the lessons learned, and I wake up blessed with a renewed sense of purpose, ready to face the world with resilience alone.

Life often throws unexpected challenges our way, and how we respond to these obstacles shapes our character and determines our future successes. One major setback that has profoundly influenced my journey over the past four years is the discovery of my severe Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a condition that has been an unwelcome companion throughout my life but remained undiagnosed until January of 2022. ADHD, with its relentless grip on focus and impulse control, turned into a formidable adversary when combined with my unchecked use of social media and video games. My name is Luke Graham, a senior at Coe-Brown Northwood Academy in Northwood, New Hampshire. I grew up in a military family, and our journey has taken us through four different states: Massachusetts, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and New Hampshire. This has exposed me to diverse cultures and a variety of people across the country. I enjoy photography, and I also enjoy calisthenics and other forms of exercise, something that I will continue to carry with me for the rest of my life. From 2005 to 2018, I was carefree and relaxed. However, the onset of adolescence brought about a formidable challenge – addiction. Video games and social media became my outlets, leading to both mental and physical health issues. My foray into console gaming began in December 2017 with the arrival of an Xbox One S. While the initial excitement was palpable, extended gaming sessions resulted in eye problems, headaches, and a shrinking social circle. The consequences manifested into depression and social anxiety, challenges that persisted even after relocating to New Hampshire in 2020. A pivotal moment occurred in January 2022 with an ADHD diagnosis. This revelation shed light on my struggles with focus, motivation, and meeting deadlines. Armed with this knowledge, I started untangling the web of addiction and mental health issues, pushing for a more disciplined and focused lifestyle. High school brought new challenges, exacerbating my battles with addiction and social hurdles. Shedding the weight of depression, I grappled with forming new connections in an unfamiliar environment. However, the ADHD diagnosis acted as a guiding force, steering me towards self-improvement and resilience. As I come close to leaving high school, I've gleaned vital lessons in discipline and self-improvement. Recognizing the significance of sleep, exercise, and a balanced diet, I've embraced techniques to enhance focus and meet deadlines without solely relying on medication. My aspirations extend beyond the academic realm; envisioning myself as an entrepreneur, steering my own business towards success. This endeavor demands a diverse skill set and effective communication, skills I am diligently honing. The journey involves confronting screen addictions, which is a challenge in today's digitized world. Yet, with determination, I am resolute in my pursuit of higher education to acquire the essential tools for business ownership. In addition to entrepreneurship, my passion for photography and the arts adds another layer to my educational ambitions. Exploring these realms further in college aligns with my goal of holistic self-improvement and a well-rounded skill set. Overall, my journey is one of resilience and growth, marked by overcoming adversity and embracing the pursuit of knowledge and discipline. ADHD, once a hindrance, has become a catalyst for understanding and self-improvement. As I step into the realm of higher education, I carry with me a commitment to shatter the shackles of addiction, cultivate essential skills, and pursue dreams of entrepreneurship and artistic expression.

Netflix's "Fury" isn't just a war movie; it's an immersive journey into the gritty realities of World War II that should top your binge-watch list. The film opens with a striking portrayal of war-torn Europe, setting the tone for the harsh landscapes that become the backdrop of this cinematic odyssey. As the narrative unfolds, we're drawn into the cramped quarters of Fury, a Sherman tank navigating the final stages of the war. The attention to historical accuracy is evident in the meticulous recreation of wartime settings, from the weaponry to the uniforms. The sensory impact is heightened by the realistic sound design, capturing the rumble of tank treads and the echoes of artillery. The crew, led by Staff Sergeant Don "Wardaddy" Collier, played by Brad Pitt, forms the heart of the story. Each crew member brings a unique personality, contributing to the mutual trust and tension within the tank. The film masterfully balances intense action sequences with quieter moments, creating relationships that anchor the narrative emotionally. A central theme is the Sherman crew's encounters with the German Tiger tanks, highlighting the technological differences that defined tank warfare during WWII. The looming threat of the Tiger tanks adds suspense, portraying the constant anxiety and fear faced by the American crews. The character development, particularly that of the rookie Norman Ellison, portrayed by Logan Lerman, is a highlight. Norman's evolution from a terrified novice to an integral part of the crew mirrors the psychological toll of war. This transformation unfolds against the backdrop of the Allies' push into Germany, providing a glimpse of the human experience during wartime. Brad Pitt's portrayal of Wardaddy is nothing short of phenomenal. His commanding presence and nuanced performance bring depth to a character shaped by the harsh realities of combat. Wardaddy's leadership style, a mix of toughness and empathy, adds complexity to the exploration of command during the war. In essence, "Fury" is a profound cinematic masterpiece that transcends the typical war film. ADHD has been a silent force shaping my life, influencing every aspect from academics to social interactions. I was diagnosed much later in life in January 2022 at 16, and my journey with this condition has been characterized by a gradual escalation in its impact on my daily life. Despite being mild during my entire childhood, the challenges intensified as I matured, causing the pathway of my life to be changed dramatically. ADHD has subtly lingered in the background, often escaping notice due to its mild nature when I was a young kid with no worries or responsibilities. However, as the demands of adolescence and academics increased, its presence became more pronounced. Throughout high school, the struggle with deadlines and discipline became a constant battle. The frustration of promising to complete tasks and subsequently letting others down took a toll on my self-esteem. It was during this time that the impact of ADHD on my academic performance and personal relationships became a heavy weight strapped to my body, pulling me downwards 24/7. One of the unique aspects of my ADHD journey is the late diagnosis. While most individuals are diagnosed in early childhood, my case unfolded differently. This late diagnosis meant that I lacked the understanding and tools to navigate the challenges that arose. However, with the support of professionals and the introduction of medication, I began to comprehend and manage the intricacies of ADHD. This newfound awareness marked a turning point, allowing me to confront and tackle the hurdles that had hindered my progress for so long. ADHD's influence extended beyond the academic realm, affecting my social life and communication skills. Struggling to connect with others and make lasting friendships became an additional layer of complexity. However, I am determined not to let ADHD define my capabilities or limit my potential. Instead, I view it as a challenge to overcome and an opportunity for growth. Despite these challenges, my motivation for pursuing higher education remains unwavering. The decision to embark on a journey of business and photography stems from a deep-seated passion for these fields. Business not only appeals to my entrepreneurial spirit but also provides a platform to create and innovate. Photography, on the other hand, allows me to capture and communicate stories visually, bridging the gap between imagination and reality. However, as my mindset is always changing, these passions may change. I am aware of the financial burden that higher education can impose, and scholarships provide a gateway to pursuing my aspirations without the looming fear of debt. By investing in my education, I aim to equip myself with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the professional landscape successfully so that I can help others in the future. While I may not have neurofibromatosis (NF), I have read about others' experiences with the condition and their pursuit of education. I extend my heartfelt wishes to those facing these unique challenges, as I recognize that the path to education and life goals is rarely easy. Overall, my journey with ADHD has been a transformative experience, shaping my character and determination. The late diagnosis has not hindered my pursuit of higher education but rather strengthened my resolve to overcome challenges. With self-improvement and learning driving me forward, I am committed to leveraging scholarships to break free from the shackles of financial constraints and turn my aspirations into reality, while helping others along the way who also have their unique struggles.
    Mental Health Importance Scholarship
Picture wearing a pair of glasses that are supposed to help you see the world through a clear lens, being able to picture everything that is happening around you. Now picture reality for someone with a mental illness, someone who sees the world through a broken lens. They struggle to relate and communicate with others and process information, and it seems like no matter how hard they try, they cannot seem to achieve their goals and aspirations. This is the reality I have faced ever since I was 14, and I am now 18. Four years is how long I have struggled with my mental health, and I now understand why it is so important to maintain mental well-being, because without it, everything else in life collapses before your eyes, like a broken lens that has finally shattered, and the cracks can only be filled by remembering those who care about you, continuing on your own two feet, and engaging in healthy habits. ADHD, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and major depressive disorder (MDD) may be easier to manage on their own, but when combined become an everlasting battle to focus, learn, and communicate with others. Everywhere I go, it seems like no one truly cares about me because I have trouble even finding words to form a sentence, so they avoid the boring kid that I have thought myself to be. However, I refuse to remain in this pool of negativity which has kept me limited to my mental condition. Some people believe in me, especially God and my family. Even when I have let everyone down millions of times, the real ones have stayed and continued to lift me by my bloody torn shirt, telling me to keep walking on two broken feet. It is these individuals who have taught me one very important component of mental well-being: those who truly care about you. You can't just rely on the care of others, however, because only you can keep going. Your family and friends may be able to pick you back up, but it is up to you to continue. Learning about yourself is vital, which can be done by developing discipline and resilience. It is with those two things that you begin to figure out what your values are, and that anything can be achieved as long as you keep your eyes on the prize. There are so many role models out there who have achieved this goal, a goal that has created purpose, and these people are proof that anyone can go from nothing to something truly remarkable. It is also very important to understand the impact your habits have on your mental well-being. If you are indulging in too much instant gratification like social media and unhealthy eating, then you will feel bad and continue to be stuck in a loop that will destroy your overall well-being over time. Your body needs to recover, and eating healthy, getting plenty of sleep, and meditating are vital to maintaining great mental well-being, as well as figuring out how to ditch the bad habits that have bound you to the ground for so long. The human brain is a very complex organ that controls every part of our body, and if we do not take care of it, then everything else begins to deteriorate. By thinking about those who truly care about you, focusing on yourself, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, mental well-being is always within reach. You are who you hang out with, what you eat, and what you do, and these things determine who you become.

Anyone can go from nothing to becoming someone truly extraordinary, even if the road is filled with gagged rocks, demons, and slippery ice. As I step closer to graduation and go out on my own and make my own decisions, I understand that I have gone through a lot over high school, things which nearly brought me to my knees and kept me there. Anyone who struggles with ADHD, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and/or major depressive disorder (MDD) understands how hard it can be to achieve what you value most. It's like looking at life through a broken lens, and you must adapt to the cracks and fog to live life to the fullest, even if it means working ten times harder than those who do not struggle with this. It can be difficult to talk to people, get up out of bed, and process information. However, despite these things, I also understand that it is not an option to stay down. I must keep getting up, even though I have fallen billions of times to the point where I cannot take it anymore. I still have dreams to accomplish. I still have people to help. I still have people who believe in me and want to see me succeed and have a comeback. I have trained, I have meditated, and I have focused on important things before, despite failing to stay consistent. However, I will not let my mental conditions keep me chained to my bed for eternity. I must tear them off with two scraped, scared, and bloody hands, and start from scratch, becoming "Unchained," and begin a new chapter in my life that will be filled with even more learning, trial, and error. I do miss the old kid I used to be, one who made others laugh and had no worries, but video games and social media addiction sought to tear me apart, things that were so severe that they negatively impacted my health. As a kid, I wanted to have fun, but I have realized that too much fun can lead to issues in the future. However, I see this past as an opportunity to come back stronger and to help others who have gone through the same issue. Everywhere I go there is always someone glued to their phone spending time on pointless apps instead of looking at their surroundings, and it shows how distracted of a world we all live in, full of instant gratification and even addiction for many people. I look to change this and help build a world that is less distracted by useless things and more engaged with the important things in life, helping others to become "Unchained" as well. Aspiring to be an entrepreneur and business owner, I want to solve a global problem that is plaguing the world. I do not yet know what problem I will solve, but I know I want to make the world a better place, one page at a time as life goes on. I do not just want to be known as some statistic in the books. I want to be remembered as Luke Graham. I have not lost every part of my young self, though. I have always been empathetic and kind to others, and I have always been willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. As I become "Unchained", I will keep this quality of myself, because it will take me very far in life. Focus on who you want to be; others don't truly know the person inside. You must show everyone your potential.

In the intricate tapestry of my life, the most influential figures emerge not from realms of fame or distant admiration, but from the very fabric of my daily existence—my parents. Beyond the walls of our home, beyond the veneer of conventional familial roles, their struggles with health battles have imparted profound lessons that extend far beyond the boundaries of our shared space. It is not merely proximity that makes them influential, but the resilience and wisdom they've demonstrated in facing adversities that have nearly torn our family apart. My mother, a resilient soul navigating a multitude of health issues, embodies strength in the face of adversity. Witnessing her endurance has been a masterclass in fortitude and has enriched my understanding of the complexities surrounding health. Her diverse experiences, ranging from careers in health to the animal field, have bestowed upon me a unique knowledge base. I've learned about health issues, medications, and even the intricate nuances of canine behavior—a testament to the breadth of her wisdom. On the other side of the coin stands my father, a veteran of the United States Air Force, whose service spans over 33 years. His battles, not confined to military arenas but extending into the realm of mental health, have illuminated the significance of resilience and the refusal to be knocked down. Experiencing PTSD and anxiety, my father's journey has been a testament to the enduring impact of service and the toll it takes on individuals and families. His lessons echo in my ears, teaching me the importance of toughness in the face of challenges and the unwavering resolve to stand tall. Yet, their influence goes beyond imparting knowledge and resilience. It extends into the realm of empathy and understanding. As I navigate the complex terrain of high school, I witness the isolation and cruelty that some students face. The derogatory labels of "retarded" and "special" echo in the hallways, a stark reminder of the insensitivity that permeates our society. In these moments, the lessons from my parents resonate—the importance of kindness, especially towards those whose struggles we might not fully comprehend. Living with parents facing health battles is not a passive experience. It is an immersive education in empathy, compassion, and the recognition of shared humanity. The intimate nature of familial struggles has been a crucible, forging bonds that transcend traditional parent-child dynamics. I have learned that support is not a mere obligation but a cornerstone of resilience, a lifeline that prevents the family fabric from unraveling completely. Navigating conversations during their challenging phases has been a delicate dance of understanding and patience. Their struggles have been a classroom where empathy and support are the primary subjects. Through these experiences, I've learned the transformative power of a supportive presence, recognizing that sometimes, a silent understanding can speak louder than words. My parents have gifted me a legacy of resilience, empathy, and the imperative to champion kindness in a world that can be unkind. As I journey through the labyrinth of high school, their influence serves as a compass, guiding me towards a path that eschews judgment and embraces compassion. Their teachings transcend the academic realm, shaping me into an individual who values not just knowledge, but the transformative potential of empathy and understanding. James T. Godwin Memorial Scholarship
In the vast tapestry of my life, the indelible thread woven by my father, Major Patrick Graham, stands out prominently, each knot a testament to his unwavering dedication to duty and his profound impact on my upbringing. His military journey, spanning 33 years and 3 months in the United States Air Force, is a narrative that resonates with sacrifice, valor, and an enduring commitment to both country and humanity. From the opening salvo of his career on July 2nd, 1987, to the final cadence on October 1st, 2020, my father's military service became a defining chapter in the Graham family legacy. Even in retirement, his sense of duty perseveres as he continues his work as a Subcontracts Manager for the M.I.T. Lincoln Laboratory, demonstrating a ceaseless devotion to the principles that shaped his illustrious career. Major Graham embarked on his military odyssey as an Aircraft Armament Systems Specialist, spending 15 years and 9 months loading bombs and bullets onto legendary aircraft like the F4 Wild Weasel, F16 Fighting Falcon, and F15 Eagle. It was in this capacity that he left an indelible mark, serving in the First Gulf War during Operation Desert Storm in 1992. Transitioning to Air Traffic Control for a brief 2 years, my father displayed versatility in navigating the intricacies of military operations. However, his insatiable quest for challenge and growth led him to cross-train as a Contracting Officer, a role that would define the remaining 15 years of his storied career. This phase included five wartime deployments, supporting various units, including special forces, across different theaters of operation. My father's service includes participation in pivotal campaigns such as Operation Desert Storm, Operation Northern Watch, and Southern Watch. He was also deployed in Incirlik, Turkey, for Operation Provide Comfort, and later served in the turbulent landscapes of Iraq and Afghanistan during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. The numerous accolades he garnered, including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal for Iraq and the Air Force Commendation Medal, stand testament to his exceptional contributions. Beyond the medals and commendations, my father's military career sculpted him into a remarkable individual—a resilient, fearless man dedicated to both his country and the well-being of those around him. His love for American Football, particularly the New England Patriots, and his fondness for outdoor activities in his hometown of Greenville, Maine, underscore the multifaceted nature of his character. Growing up, I witnessed the impact of his military camaraderie, where we had to move to four different states over 15 years, including Massachusetts, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and finally New Hampshire, where my father retired in 2020. My dad's long career allowed him to meet many friends along the way, many of whom he still speaks to, manifested in daily conversations about sports cars or dissecting the latest football game. My father's journey serves as a beacon for my aspirations. While I may not tread the path of military service, his enduring lessons on hard work and resilience propel me towards entrepreneurship and a mission to solve global problems. He taught me to work your butt off and don't let others knock you down, a statement which echoes in my pursuits, shaping my ambitions to positively impact the lives of millions. As I look towards the future, I am acutely aware of the importance of preserving my father's legacy. I want his military career to inspire others, ensuring that he is not forgotten, even when the echoes of his service fade into memory. For now, I cherish the moments we share, each a testament to the enduring bond forged through a lifetime of dedication and sacrifice.
    KC R. Sandidge Photography Scholarship
For this portfolio, I wanted to focus my sustained investigation on the mental health crisis that has plagued the United States and many other countries in recent years. The main motivator for creating this portfolio was the fact that I struggle with my mental health battles, particularly with ADHD, anxiety, and depression, but I understand that I am not the only one who has multiple battles all in one, but rather one of millions of people worldwide. I started with collecting photographs of my childhood self, which show shots of a happy and outgoing kid who loved life and had zero worries, and then I contrasted them with current photographs of myself that are black and white and much larger than the smaller childhood photos to convey dullness and how my current battles are making me lose the old me. I then split my projects to focus more on each mental health condition to convey how debilitating it can be to have multiple issues all in one, and so for the second project I focused on ADHD and how difficult it is to keep track of time, showing a blur of me walking through a hallway which is surrounded by analog clocks showing how time is passing by and it is creating anxiety and panic for me. I went further into ADHD with my third project, creating a triptych that shows blurs of my face looking in different directions while trying to do homework, showing how difficult it is to focus on important tasks and how easily someone can get sidetracked with activities such as browsing social media on a desktop computer or mobile device, which is shown in the middle image on the triptych. For the fourth project, I wanted to show how social media and smartphones have taken control of society and are a cause of much of teens' mental health issues, specifically Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Snapchat, and how this can cause a person to feel trapped, which is why I created an accordion fold piece showing two perspectives. Finally, I transitioned to anxiety disorder and out someone's fears can cause them to have panic attacks, such as being afraid of darkness, and how someone with nyctophobia (fear of darkness) can completely avoid a dark space and freak out when trapped in such a completely dark place, which is shown in the last project.

For most of my life, I reveled in the joy of being a happy and enthusiastic individual, captivated by the allure of photography, drawing, and the immersive world of video games. However, as the transitional phase into my teen years unfolded, a series of challenges began to overshadow my once-vibrant existence. The seeds of my struggles were sown in the excitement of receiving my first gaming console, the Xbox One S, in 6th grade. The allure of endless gaming sessions, coupled with the introduction of a smartphone in December 2018, marked the genesis of a screen addiction that would negatively impact my health. My eyes struggled to focus, headaches became a constant companion, and my mental well-being was slowly eroding. The detrimental effects of my screen addiction became increasingly apparent as I navigated 8th grade. Anxiety crept in, making it challenging to communicate with friends, and I found myself withdrawing from social interactions. The more I lost myself in the digital realm, the greater the toll on my mental health, resulting in the onset of depression. Unbeknownst to me, this turbulent period would leave a lasting imprint on my ability to learn and connect with the world around me. Fast-forwarding to my sophomore year in 2022, a diagnosis of ADHD provided a lens through which to understand my struggles. ADHD, anxiety, and depression formed a trifecta that disrupted my ability to absorb and retain information effectively. Throughout all four years of high school, this manifested as a profound challenge, hindering my capacity to focus on essential aspects of my education that would contribute to personal improvement. My struggle to absorb information not only affected my academic performance but also exacerbated the difficulties I faced in my social life. The constant focus on instant gratification and temporary happiness, rooted in my screen addiction, left me grappling with an inability to connect meaningfully with others. My ADHD amplified these challenges, causing me to fixate on what I should say in conversations rather than allowing them to flow naturally. Recognizing the impact of these challenges on my education, my school implemented a "504 Plan." This plan, tailored for students with learning disabilities and mental health struggles, afforded me additional time to complete assignments, including tests, and offered other accommodations. While the 504 Plan provided valuable support, I am acutely aware of the need to transition towards greater self-reliance, a realization that has gained prominence as I navigate my senior year. Understanding the impending shift to college, I must learn to navigate the academic landscape independently. This realization has spurred a commitment to developing coping mechanisms and strategies that will empower me to succeed beyond the structured support of a 504 Plan. Despite all the debilitating struggles, I have managed to maintain a 94 cumulative GPA, equivalent to a 4.0 GPA. This stands as a testament to my unwavering determination to learn and grow, even in the face of adversity. My commitment to education extends beyond grades; it embodies a passion for absorbing knowledge and pursuing my dreams of becoming an entrepreneur, and ultimately starting my own business. As I confront the interplay of ADHD, anxiety, and depression, I am forging a path toward a future where learning is not a hurdle but a journey of self-discovery. With each struggle, I am learning to embrace my unique learning style, seeking the support I need, and working towards a future where education becomes a tool for empowerment rather than a battlefield of challenges. My dreams of entrepreneurship remain steadfast, propelled by the belief that education is the key to unlocking a world of possibilities.
    Minecraft Forever Fan Scholarship
My favorite aspect of Minecraft is that very statement that is provided in the prompt question: Minecraft offers limitless possibilities. Not only does it allow you to build whatever you want, but it is a game that anyone of any age can play. You can explore, build, survive, compete, stream, buy, and do many other things in Minecraft. Ever since I first started playing Minecraft in 2013, it has always been my favorite game, no matter what. I remember when I was 7 and I would play it at my grandparents' house in northern Texas. They had a Dell desktop computer with an old square Dell monitor from the 2000s, and the computer ran on Windows 7, but it still ran smoothly in the early 2010s. Since I was just a kid and did not have much of my own money, I would always play the demo version of Minecraft, which gave you an hour to do whatever you wanted, but you spawn in the same seed used for the demo version. Once that timer in the top left of the screen started ticking, I would immediately begin punching trees, gathering as much wood as possible before using my wooden pickaxe to gather cobblestone and continue evolving my tools to gather coal, iron, emeralds, gold, lapiz lazuli, redstone, and diamonds. The most progress I could get to in survival mode was finding this particular cave that had the same diamond ores, and I would mine them in excitement while attempting to build a nether portal before the timer ran out. Fast forwarding to 2015, I got my very first personal device for my birthday from my grandparents: an iPad Mini 2. I immediately downloaded Minecraft: Pocket Edition and started playing, but was disappointed by the very few items and mobs that were in the game, since this was the earlier version of the app. Over time, though, more and more stuff was added, and I created dozens of worlds, allowing my imagination to thrive. I would join many player-made servers and join the larger servers to play Hunger Games and Skyblock. I would also binge-watch OG Minecraft YouTubers like BajanCanadian and DanTDM, who will forever have a place in my heart and childhood memories. As I got older, so did Minecraft, and more and more updates were added over time. Before I had my console, I would play Minecraft at friends' houses, playing in split-screen mode on one TV monitor. I would sit on the bed with my best friends in Louisiana, and we would laugh together as we had fun playing on my friend Nate's PlayStation 3. All of this changed, however, when I got an Xbox One S for Christmas in 2017, and I freaked out. It was something I had always wanted for most of my life at the time, and I finally received it from my parents for getting good grades. I played Minecraft and many other games on the console for hours, creating more and more worlds to let my creativity run while. Eventually, when I returned home to Louisiana, my friends were thrilled to see that I had my console, and we had sleepovers together and played for hours. I am now 18 years old and live much farther away from Louisiana in New Hampshire, and yet these memories still stick with me because that is how good Minecraft truly is, even to this day. I still listen to C418's tracks on Spotify to help calm myself down and reflect on all the memories I made playing the best video game ever created: Minecraft.

It is a Monday morning in the rural outskirts of New Hampshire, and a boy wakes up to the sound of his alarm clock buzzing and banging on his top shelf. He goes over and turns the alarm off and lays back in bed, eyes barely open, not thinking at all, but he knows he must get up to go to jail. He knows he must get up to have information stuffed in his head, only to forget what has been shown to him minutes later. After his jail time, he goes home, and gets back in bed, falling asleep from exhaustion. He then wakes up to see that it is 8 PM, and he has not even started his homework, so he frantically gets up and crams as much work as he can into one night, and by the time he is finished, the clock reads 2 AM, and he falls back into bed, just to do it all over again, a cycle which seems unbreakable. This is the reality that I have faced for all of my high school career. I have been diagnosed with ADHD, anxiety, and depression, and despite knowing what I need to get done and what I can do to get better, I can't seem to get myself up to better myself. It is like I am chained to my bed, unable to get up until the chains are loosened over time, knowing I have to get something done, even if it means staying up until two in the morning. I believe we are in a time when the school system is failing children and teens. The system forces us to learn y=mx=b and the quadratic equation, or how the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, yet, most of us never use this information unless we go into these fields. We are required to take math, science, English, and many others, hoping that we will leave grade school with the information needed to succeed, yet most do not meet their TRUE dreams, and settle for a 9-5 which underpays them and only helps the business owner build their dreams. Students should not be forced to sit in rows and stare at a projector and a screen for hours on end, and they should not be forced to take certain classes that do not align with who they want to become. The only escape many have from this system is social media, yet social media is also causing a growing mental health crisis in children and teens. However, despite all of this, change can be made with more awareness, understanding, and empathy for others. From my struggles with mental illness as a student, I have learned a lot and I am becoming stronger and stronger every single day, even if I have failed a lot. In my school, I have seen numerous students who sit alone at lunch tables and are laughed at because of the way they act and speak due to their mental illness, and it angers me that this is overlooked by most. I have advocated for mental health ever since I realized how overlooked it truly is, whether that be by making a speech in my English class on the effects of mental health and social media on teens, donating to the National Alliance on Mental Health in New Hampshire, or expressing mental health struggles through my art. By doing things such as these, the world can gain a better understanding of mental illness, and more and more people can be helped.

In the quiet corners of my mind, a tumultuous journey with mental illness has shaped the person I am today. My name is Luke Graham, an 18-year-old senior at Coe-Brown Northwood Academy in Northwood, New Hampshire, and I embark on this narrative not as a tale of defeat but as a testament to resilience and the unyielding pursuit of a brighter future. The shadows of ADHD, anxiety, and depression began to encroach upon my life during the transition to 8th grade in August of 2019. While many with ADHD are diagnosed in childhood, my revelation came only in January of 2022. A late diagnosis posed its challenges, as the impact of ADHD intertwined with the emergence of anxiety and depression, casting a complex web over my journey. My family, too, navigates the labyrinth of mental health. My mother grapples with anxiety and depression, and my father, a veteran of 33 years in the Air Force, carries the weight of minor PTSD and anxiety. These challenges, like tempests on the horizon, have tested the fabric of our lives. Yet, in the face of adversity, we stand united, weathering the storms together. Our relationships, though strained at times, have proven resilient. As I reflect on the trajectory of my life, I recognize that ADHD, though latent, has been a constant companion. My childhood, filled with the bliss of carefree days, shielded me from its noticeable impact. The emergence of anxiety and depression in late middle school ushered in a new chapter, challenging my ability to socialize and make connections. It was then that my ADHD became worse to where it was noticeable, and that was when I was diagnosed at the beginning of 2022. Friends, like fleeting shadows, vanished as I grappled with communication barriers and social anxiety. Yet, I refuse to be defined by these challenges. I am on a transformative journey, committed to self-improvement—both mentally and physically. The struggle, though arduous, has imparted invaluable lessons. It has taught me to cherish the pillars of strength in my life: God, family, and the steadfast friends who weathered the storm beside me. While adolescence became a battleground against mental illness, it also birthed a profound purpose within me. I aspire to be an entrepreneur, not merely to amass wealth, but to address a global problem and channel the proceeds back into the hands of research organizations and charities. In particular, my passion lies in supporting those dedicated to alleviating the burdens of mental illness. The uncertainty of the future veils my entrepreneurial pursuits, but the clarity lies in the desire to make a difference. I wish to utilize my experiences as a driving force, empowering others to confront their struggles and embark on their paths of improvement. The fire within me seeks to illuminate the darkness surrounding mental health, inspiring positive change on a global scale. In my quest to redefine success, I carry the torch of hope for those grappling with similar demons. Through entrepreneurship, I aim to catalyze change, be a beacon of inspiration, and contribute to a world where mental health is not shrouded in stigma but met with empathy and understanding. This is not just my story; it is a call to action, a testament to resilience, and an unwavering commitment to transforming struggles into opportunities for growth.

Growing up as the son of an Air Force veteran has been a journey of resilience, adaptability, and an enduring appreciation for service to a cause greater than oneself. My father, a veteran of the United States Air Force for 33 years, embarked on a dynamic career that unfolded across diverse assignments in various countries worldwide. His story, woven into the fabric of military service, has left an indelible mark on my life. Enlisting on the 2nd of July, 1987, my father's commitment led him through the First Gulf War, participating in Operation Desert Storm. He also served in Operation Northern Watch and Southern Watch. His boots touched the ground in Incirlik, Turkey, during Operation Provide Comfort, and he answered the call in both Iraq and Afghanistan for Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. A multifaceted career saw him serve as an Aircraft Armament Systems Specialist for over 15 years, loading the lethal cargo of bombs and bullets onto iconic aircraft such as the F4 Wild Weasel, F16 Fighting Falcon, and the F15 Eagle. Adapting to the ever-changing needs of the Air Force, he transitioned to Air Traffic Control for two years, before cross-training as a Contracting Officer, dedicating another 15 years to this critical role. His commitment did not go unnoticed, earning him prestigious accolades including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal for Iraq, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal twice. On the 1st of October, 2020, he retired as a Major, marking the end of his military career. While I missed the early chapters of his military saga, the echoes of his dedication reverberated through my understanding of service and sacrifice. The Air Force was more than a career for him; it was a calling that provided purpose, camaraderie, and enduring connections. Conversations with friends forged during his service, and they last to this day, whether they center around college football or the latest trends. This underlines the lasting impact of the bonds formed in the crucible of military life. My father's service took us to Massachusetts, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and finally, New Hampshire. Each relocation, while presenting challenges, also bestowed upon me the gift of cultural diversity. From these experiences, I cultivated a network of friends spanning various backgrounds, fostering a rich tapestry of relationships that persist to this day. Yet, the transient nature of military life exacted its toll, separating me from friends and places that held a special significance. The sacrifices, however, instilled in me resilience and an appreciation for the transient nature of many friendships. Being a military child goes beyond experiencing diverse cultures; it instills a profound understanding of the vital role played by the U.S. military. History underscores the importance of a robust military force in safeguarding the nation. It is a shield against vulnerabilities witnessed in the Revolutionary War and the harrowing Attack on Pearl Harbor, an event that propelled the U.S. into World War II. As I chart my course toward entrepreneurship, I carry with me the legacy of my father's dedication. His teachings about the Air Force and the military as a whole resonate in my pursuit of excellence. I am poised to forge my path, yet I remain committed to keeping alive his legacy—acknowledging the importance of service, sacrifice, and the indomitable spirit that defines the men and women of the military.

From the moment my father enlisted in the United States Air Force on July 2, 1987, his life became a journey of constant change and profound lessons in service. A 33-year veteran, he traversed the globe, immersing himself in assignments spanning Operation Desert Storm, Northern Watch, Southern Watch, Provide Comfort, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom, which brought him to the countries of Turkey, Iraq, and Afghanistan. This odyssey shaped not just his career but the very fabric of our family. For 15 years and 9 months, my father was an Aircraft Armament Systems Specialist, loading munitions onto iconic aircraft like the F4 Wild Weasel, F16 Fighting Falcon, and the F15 Eagle. He also spent two years in Air Traffic Control during the First Gulf War before seamlessly transitioning to becoming a Contracting Officer, dedicating another 15 years to that field. His commitment earned him accolades, including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal for Iraq, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal (twice). On October 1, 2020, my father retired from the rank of Major, concluding his remarkable Air Force career. While I may not have witnessed every chapter (being born in 2005, long after he joined the Air Force), I understand the sacrifices and dedication that defined his service. His commitment wasn't just to a branch; it was to a purpose greater than oneself, an ethos that resonated deeply within him. His service exposed me to diverse cultures across four states—Massachusetts, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and, finally, New Hampshire, where he retired. Due to this, I forged friendships and embraced an array of cultures, establishing connections that endure to this day. The transient nature of military life taught me resilience, but it also demanded sacrifices. Leaving behind friends and places that felt like home was tough, but it shaped my perspective on adaptability and the transient nature of many friendships. As a military child, I've come to understand the significance of the U.S. military. Beyond the uniforms and ranks, it represents the safeguarding force that allows our nation to flourish. The sacrifices of the military, in all its branches, guarantee the freedom and security enjoyed by its citizens, allowing us to have no worries about war or invasion, despite the troubling wars happening outside of this country. Having this freedom of being a U.S. citizen has taught me to never take it for granted, since there are so many people worldwide who wake up the sounds of sirens and explosions every single day. While my path diverges from the military, as I pursue entrepreneurship, the legacy of my father remains an indelible part of my identity. His dedication to something greater than self, the lessons in adaptability, and his unwavering commitment to service are the pillars that propel me forward. In the grand tapestry of my life, his influence weaves through, a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who dedicate their lives to a cause larger than themselves.

In the tapestry of my 18 years, my journey has been woven across the varied landscapes of the United States, courtesy of my military veteran family. This nomadic existence has exposed me to the contrasting cultures of the South and the Northeast, shaping my perspective and fostering a rich tapestry of experiences. My passion for the arts, particularly photography, has been an enduring companion throughout this journey. From the humble beginnings of a little green Point-And-Shoot Canon camera to the more recent embrace of an advanced single-lens reflex camera by Nikon, my affinity for capturing moments has evolved. It wasn't until January of 2023 that I took a decisive step into the realm of professional photography, delving into the intricacies of my Nikon camera. The learning curve remains steep, but each snap of the shutter is a brushstroke in my ongoing journey of mastering this craft. Beyond the lens, my interests extend to the broader canvas of visual arts, with a keen eye on architecture and other design fields. This multidimensional passion has become the crucible in which my entrepreneurial aspirations are forged. The fusion of art and design serves not only as a means of personal expression but also as a vehicle for addressing global issues. As I tread the path of arts education, the decision is grounded in a desire to hone my skills, not merely as a photographer but as a visual storyteller. Photography, to me, is a powerful language that transcends verbal boundaries. It is a medium through which I seek to amplify voices, shedding light on societal challenges and advocating for change. My journey with photography is not confined to the technicalities of camera settings or the post-production nuances of Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. It is a narrative that unfolds with each click, driven by an overarching mission to spotlight social issues. Mental health and government affairs stand as the initial focal points, but my passion is a dynamic force, eager to expand its reach into diverse and impactful topics. The lens becomes my tool for introspection and advocacy, capturing the nuanced emotions and struggles that define the human experience. Through my work, I aim to evoke empathy, challenge perceptions, and spark conversations that resonate beyond the confines of the visual realm. In the digital art space, my ambitions are not just confined to personal expression; they extend to the realms of entrepreneurship and societal impact. I envision leveraging my artistic skills and design sensibilities to contribute meaningfully to addressing global challenges. Whether through innovative solutions or thought-provoking visual narratives, my goal is to be a catalyst for positive change. As I embark on this educational journey in the arts, I am not just cultivating technical proficiency; I am nurturing a voice that speaks through pixels and hues. This endeavor is not merely a pursuit of passion; it is a commitment to being a conduit for change, armed with a camera and a canvas, ready to paint the world with vibrant strokes of art and purpose.
