Something I associate Mexican heritage with is hard work because of my childhood. At the age of seven, I started working in construction alongside my father. Every weekend, every break while my friends got to play sports or participate in Boy Scouts, I went along with my dad to work. I used to have a bitter feeling getting in my dad's truck because truthfully, I wanted to stay home and be like my friends. However, my story was different from my American friends. My jealousy blinded me from initially seeing the beauty in working. What started as a bitter feeling only turned into a proud feeling as I grew older.
Working alongside my father taught me an important lesson at a young age and is the main reason why I associate my Mexican heritage with hard work. The lesson being, life doesn't hand you your dreams, life gives you the tools to work for it. My dream is to become a certified architect and my tools are my education. Through my pursuit of higher education, something my parents didn’t have the luxury to do, I can achieve my dreams while serving as an inspiration to people with similar backgrounds as mine. My dad taught me working hard to achieve your dreams is mexican heritage, specifically it’s my Mexican heritage.
Working in construction also directly influenced me to strive to be an architect, as it showed me that I have a strong passion for creating and designing things. Achieving this dream of mine, will be attained with my dedication but will be difficult without the support of others because hard work can only get you so far without the support of others. As much as someone might want to achieve their dreams without support, it’s simply impossible. This scholarship is the support I need to achieve my education goals and pursue a career as a certified architect. My dad is a single father and just like everyone else, can only do so much to support me and my 3 sisters' educational goals. This scholarship is essential to my future as it will enable me to pursue higher education and become an architect that can inspire others who share the same Mexican heritage as mine.
