Robert and Suzi DeGennaro Scholarship for Disabled Students
Overcoming Physical Challenges to Pursue My Dreams I have always had to deal with things that were not easy for me when I was growing up. My disability is not something that you can see. It has had a big impact on my education and how I handle problems in life. Even simple things like getting around campus standing for a time in labs or taking part in certain activities can be hard and need extra planning.. Even with these challenges I have learned to be strong keep going and speak up for myself. When I was in school and in my first years of college at FSCJ I had some problems with getting around. Some classrooms had desks that were too close together some equipment was hard to use. It was a long walk between buildings. I had to learn how to make the most of my energy and adapt so I could take part in my education. These experiences taught me to be patient and to plan ahead. I learned that my disability does not determine what I can achieve. It just means I have to approach things in a way. My disability has had an impact on my life especially when it comes to learning to speak up for myself. I learned how to talk to my teachers and fellow students about what I need to succeed. This has helped me not in school but also in my personal and professional life. I have also learned to appreciate technology that makes learning easier. Things like books, online classes and special equipment have helped me stay involved and do well even when my body is not cooperating. The Robert and Suzi DeGennaro Scholarship would make a difference for me as I continue my education. The cost of tools, medical care and transportation can add up and be a big obstacle. If I get this scholarship I can focus on my studies take part in campus life and pursue my goals without worrying about money. In the future I want to finish college and get a job that helps others who are facing challenges. My experiences with my disability have taught me to be strong and to want to help others. This scholarship would not help me financially but it would also show me that I can overcome my challenges and achieve my goals. To sum it up my disability has changed how I approach education taught me to be strong and speak up for myself and made me more determined to succeed. With the help of the Robert and Suzi DeGennaro Scholarship I can keep going to school be ready to face challenges and make an impact, on my community and future career.

The Relationship That Shaped My Journey I learned a lot of things from the people who have supported me and pushed me to be my best. For me that person is my mother. When I was fifteen years old I moved to the United States from Honduras. My mother became the one person I could count on in an unfamiliar place. She showed me what it means to care about someone and how important it is to have good relationships. These relationships can shape who you are, what you want to do and how you treat others. My mother had a time when we first moved to Jacksonville. She had to learn a language figure out a new school system and start over in a new country. It was not easy for her.. She never gave up. I saw her work very hard to take care of our family and help my brother and me with our feelings and problems. She inspired me to be strong and keep going even when thingsre tough. I learned that having relationships takes time, understanding and a lot of effort even when things are hard. One thing my mother taught me is to listen to people. She said I should pay attention to what they say how they feel and what they do not say. This has helped me be a friend and classmate. When we work in groups I make sure everyone gets to talk and feels important. My mother showed me that this is how you build relationships. You have to care about people respect them and pay attention to them. As I got older I saw more and more how my mothers guidance helped me. I joined JROTC played in the band and was a leader in school. These things taught me about teamwork talking to people and trusting others. I learned that I did not do everything on my own. I had help from people. My mother showed me that when you help people and care about them everyone can do better and be happy. My mother also taught me that relationships are important for everyone not for me. In a world where people use technology a lot it is easy to feel. I want to use what my mother taught me to make things better. I help my classmates, volunteer. Try to be a good friend. I want to make places where people feel seen heard and valued. I learned that good relationships are not just good for you but for the community. I plan to keep using what my mother taught me when I go to Jacksonville University and after that. I want to do something that helps people. I want to be a leader, a mentor or help my community. My mother gave me the tools to do these things. She taught me to care about people work with them and be strong. She showed me that every time you talk to someone you can help them support them and make your relationship stronger. My mother has had the impact, on my life. She taught me how to talk to people be a leader and grow as a person. She showed me that relationships are very important. I know that what I learned from her will help me be a person and do good things. I will use what she taught me to be a part of my community and to achieve my goals. My mother is the reason I'm who I am today.

In my life, I have always been fascinated by individuals who have the ability to deal with adversity with resilience, integrity, and courage. There is one individual whose life has profoundly influenced me regarding my passion for education, and that is my mother. My mother immigrated to America from Honduras with my brother and me when I was only fifteen years old with just enough possessions but with abundant dreams. Despite the difficulties faced in a new environment in terms of linguistic, cultural, and monetary issues, she worked very hard to raise her children while at the same time motivating us to strive for success in our educational careers. The way my mother manages her career, her family, and herself made me realize the importance of making the most out of my education. I learned that education goes beyond academic success; it equips students with the ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and solve problems creatively. These are essential qualities for anyone seeking to lead a successful life. Hence, I joined the speech and debate team, which provided me with an opportunity to test my knowledge and abilities in a highly competitive environment. As a member of the debate team, I am privileged to explore different subjects, formulate compelling arguments, and interact with people from various backgrounds. I was able to learn from my participation in speech and debate that preparation and discipline are key elements. Speeches and debates always need proper preparation, research, and practice. I have come to understand that how much effort one puts into preparing for something usually dictates the end result. This principle does not apply just to debating, but all aspects of academic and personal life. When it comes to tackling difficult courses in college or thinking about what kind of career to pursue, debating skills have enabled me to become more focused, diligent, and determined. Debate has made me realize that I am more motivated than ever to get a good education. Debate has taught me that there are many qualities needed to be successful in one's career, including good communication skills, critical thinking, and the ability to advocate for oneself. The confidence I possess in debate can apply to all other aspects of my life, such as academics and personal endeavors. This particular activity has taught me that education is not just about personal success, but is also a chance to do well in helping others succeed. In the same way that my mom has been my inspiration to try hard and set my goals high, I would like to be an inspiration to others through education. To conclude, the drive that my mother instilled in me, along with my participation in debates and speeches, will guide my path in education. My mother instilled the value of persistence and self-belief, while debating gave me an understanding of the practical aspects of effective communication and critical thinking. The lessons learned from these two factors motivate me to study further and seize every chance to enhance my learning experience. In participating in the activity of debating and speeches, I am not only preparing myself for future endeavors in my educational pursuits but also equipping myself with the necessary skills to succeed in my life outside of the classroom environment.

At the start of each day, remind yourself, “Today I will be encountering petty obstacles, ungrateful people, rascals, treachery, ill will, slander, and all manner of selfishness.” All these come because the perpetrators are ignorant of what’s good and evil. As for myself, I’ve had a long time now to grasp the distinction and can remain unruffled by it.” Marco Aurelio, Meditations, Book 2, Paragraph 1 Through this paragraph, Marco Aurelio is giving us a way of looking at each new day with preparedness, self-knowledge, and moral clarity. At first glance, one could interpret this paragraph as just an encouragement to expect bad behavior and negativity to come our way every day. In actuality, though, Aurelio is offering a very deep lesson in self-control and ethical integrity, virtues that define Stoicism. With awareness of the fact that other people's actions are motivated only by ignorance and are not truly evil, a Stoic is supposed to remain calm and virtuous. The first statement, "Begin each day by telling yourself," indicates the necessity of forming certain habits to develop psychological strength. According to Aurelio, building resilience is a purposeful process rather than something that happens accidentally. Mentally preparing for the challenges that one is going to face helps an individual to foresee the possible difficulties associated with human communication and avoid becoming vulnerable because of emotional reactions. Premeditation or meditatio malorum means preparing for any trouble to become resilient and resist its impact. In this way, a person will never feel disappointed since he or she will have prepared for any unpleasant moment in advance. The second part of the statement, "Today I shall be meeting with interference, ingratitude, insolence, disloyalty, ill-will, and selfishness," implies listing some human qualities that a person might experience. Thus, the author wants to make readers realize that people are often mean and disappointing. Nevertheless, he or she believes that such knowledge will help to prepare for any trouble and act reasonably. Each negative quality enumerated by Aurelio – interference, ingratitude, insolence, disloyalty, ill-will, and selfishness – should be seen as another challenge for a person trying to develop psychological resilience. An important point is made when Aurelio states, “all of them due to the ignorance of those who do wrong.” In this statement, Aurelio does not consider negative acts as an attack on oneself but considers them products of ignorance. It is essential to understand that such acts are not done by the people deliberately and hence should be tolerated. The realization that the ignorance of others leads them to perform wrong actions gives rise to a compassionate attitude and promotes patience and tolerance. Aurelio emphasizes that what we can control is our reaction towards things, and Aurelio advises us to remain calm in all situations. The second sentence, “But for my part I have long perceived the nature of good and evil, and I am not shaken by them,” is indicative of a wise person, unlike ignorant individuals who lack knowledge of good and bad things. Aurelio’s statement shows his understanding of the concepts of good and evil and his ability to remain unaffected by those concepts. One might not be able to exercise control over other people’s activities, but one can definitely take charge of his or her own decisions and actions. Stoicism clearly differentiates between the elements which can and cannot be controlled, serving as a guide for stability and logical reasoning. A careful reading of this paragraph brings more than ethical significance since Aurelio shares his knowledge regarding how to lead a virtuous life. According to him, living a purposeful life means having such virtues as wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance, which can only be preserved by preparation, thoughtfulness, and moderation. This paragraph calls for introspection in relation to one's actions in order to become a resilient and ethically strong person. Applying this insight to my life experience helps to overcome many obstacles. In particular, being a college student, one faces various challenges such as difficult subjects, a lot of work, strict teachers, and many other things, which sometimes make people stressed, frustrated, and even nervous. However, when I think about all the problems, which I may face during a given day, it helps me be prepared psychologically and perform better. In addition, as well as in case of interpersonal interactions, it is possible to predict some academic difficulties and be prepared to deal with them properly and constructively. Moreover, the idea of learning about the ignorance behind the negativity expressed by the individual is very relevant to working with others within an educational environment. Teamwork and classroom interactions may involve conflicts, misunderstandings, and lack of involvement from certain students. It becomes easier to work in such a context if one realizes that these problems are due to ignorance, not malice. This is why it is possible to use the ideas suggested by Aurelio when dealing with them since his separation of outside events from judgment makes it possible for one to focus and act. Also, one can notice that the idea of reflection plays a central role in the book, which makes it important for studying in college. At the beginning of every day, the author asks the reader to reflect on one's actions since self-improvement requires conscious efforts. In college, this means regular review of all course materials, making plans for future classes, and defining clear goals for oneself. It is also important because one will be able to understand that only discipline can guarantee success. Besides, the Stoic view promotes sustained development and adaptability. As per the words of Aurelio, obstacles, disillusionment, and troubles are bound to happen but will never restrict us from achieving anything great. Using these teachings has helped me cope with the unpredictable college life. I have understood that each difficulty should be embraced as an opportunity to develop new abilities, hone my character, and expand knowledge. Hence, the Stoic outlook turns challenges into means of personal growth, allowing me to persist, reflect on the experience, and enhance my learning methods. In summary, Marco Aurelio’s paragraph from Meditations provides invaluable insights into how to survive life through virtue, wisdom, and perseverance. Analyzing the text in depth, one realizes that its deeper meaning goes far beyond general recommendations on human conduct. Aurelio encourages readers to prepare for any eventuality, practice self-reflection, and think clearly about morality. Our attitude towards life and people around us depends entirely on us and is not controlled by external forces. Employing the teachings of Aurelio in my studies has served as a guideline for dealing with obstacles wisely, staying calm in the face of adversity, and striving for continuous self-improvement.

Growing up in a single-parent household taught me early on the value of hard work, responsibility, and perseverance. My mother has always worked tirelessly to provide for our family, and I have learned from her example that success comes from determination and dedication. Moving from Honduras to the United States at 15 added challenges, including adapting to a new language, culture, and school system. I had to quickly learn English, navigate a new environment, and take on responsibilities to support my family while keeping up with my studies. Working at Lowes while attending college at Florida State College at Jacksonville has reinforced these lessons. Balancing work, school, and family responsibilities requires discipline, time management, and focus. These experiences have strengthened my resilience and motivated me to pursue my goals, including earning a degree in Electrical Engineering, participating in ROTC, and eventually serving as a military officer. I plan to use my life experiences to make a positive impact by inspiring others who face challenges similar to mine. I want to demonstrate that adversity whether financial, familial, or linguisti can be overcome with perseverance and a strong work ethic. I also hope to mentor younger students, especially those from single-parent or low-income households, encouraging them to pursue higher education and leadership opportunities. Receiving this scholarship would support my journey by easing some of the financial pressures of college, allowing me to focus more fully on my studies, ROTC training, and personal growth. I am committed to using the lessons I have learned to succeed academically, serve my community, and set an example of resilience and determination for others.
      Strength in Adversity Scholarship
Being a second language learner in America is something that has served as both a strength and weakness in my life. Being moved from Honduras at the age of 15, it was required for me to learn the language and adapt to a whole new society, schooling system, and environment. It has tested my ability to be resilient more than anything else in my life, especially when I got involved in ROTC during high school. Being in ROTC meant having some instances of prejudice and discrimination coming from my fellow cadets that were ignorant about my background or my capability. There was one instance where I felt proud of my ability to withstand any obstacles. It happened during the time when I participated in an exercise that involved leadership skills in the ROTC program. The instructor asked me to guide a group, but unfortunately, some of the students did not agree with me; they criticized my accent and thought that I would not be able to lead a team. However, I remained undeterred by those remarks and paid no heed to what others were saying; instead, I concentrated on what needed to be done, and consequently, my team excelled in the exercise compared to other groups. From then on, this experience taught me how to deal with difficulties in every part of my life. It taught me how to stay self-assured about my capabilities, to be attentive, and to conduct myself with respect and confidence despite all obstacles. Furthermore, I started believing that obstacles such as discrimination, difficulties with a language or with adaptation, could always be dealt with through dedication, preparation, and perseverance. Moreover, it was the inspiration to keep studying and participating in my ROTC training to achieve my dreams of being an army officer and an engineer. Finally, my bilingualism and ability to speak a second language fluently is another asset that I can boast of. As well as a strong educational background, it provides me with great communication skills and the ability to act quickly and to think in different ways. Despite what many might say, I consider this difference to be my strength as it gives me the opportunity to see things from several angles and find an adequate solution to various issues. These challenges helped me develop a level of perseverance that goes far beyond ROTC training. It is impossible for me to accept any obstacle—no matter what kind it is, including racial discrimination, language problems, or any other challenges—as my destiny or as something that limits what I can accomplish in life. I believe I am capable of converting all adversities into opportunities to lead and inspire others to do the same. To summarize, I would like to say that having been through both ROTC and experiencing being a second-language English speaker, I understand that perseverance is an art of survival that is all about overcoming the obstacles one encounters on the road towards success. I am proud of how I managed to cope with discrimination and language barriers and use these situations as a chance to build an extremely determined and ambitious person out of myself.
      Julie Holloway Bryant Memorial Scholarship
As I was born in Honduras, my native language is Spanish, but I picked up English as my second language when I was fifteen years old and moved to the United States. The experience of moving to a foreign country and attending high school in a language that I hardly knew is probably the toughest challenge that I have ever had to face. Learning to adapt and assimilate in a foreign language is definitely not easy, especially when you must simultaneously cope with fitting in with your peers. It was through this experience that I realized the importance of resilience, perseverance, and hard work. Being bilingual certainly has its advantages as well as disadvantages. The main disadvantage that bilingual people face is having to constantly catch up and excel academically despite the challenges that learning in a second language brings with it. Being able to read texts and write essays and engage in class discussions without knowing the language well enough poses serious challenges. Another issue with being bilingual is having to serve as a go-between for my family members whenever it comes to making appointments or filling out forms for school. However, being bilingual has brought unique advantages as well. Bilingualism has enabled me to interact with people from diverse backgrounds, comprehend various views, and communicate within different communities with ease. Bilingualism has further sharpened my cognitive capabilities, including my ability to memorize information, concentrate on tasks, and multitask efficiently. Such abilities have helped me succeed in educational institutions, accomplish my duties in the workplace, and attain my objectives, which would have otherwise been unattainable had I been monolingual. Currently, I am a freshman in college enrolled in Florida State College at Jacksonville in pursuit of an Associate in Arts degree. In the near future, I plan to enroll in a four-year university and major in Electrical Engineering as part of ROTC and prepare for a military career. Having bilingual skills will prove highly advantageous to me in this endeavor since it will enable me to communicate and collaborate with people from various cultural backgrounds. Following my graduation, I plan on combining my knowledge, leadership abilities, and bilingual skills to make an impression not only on the military but also on various engineering endeavors for the benefit of society. I hope to motivate other students struggling with linguistic issues to strive toward their academic goals and become leaders in their chosen fields, proving that language differences do not impede one's success. As a result of being bilingual, I learned important life skills such as resiliency and adaptability. Thanks to this award, I will be able to further my studies and ensure that I have the opportunity to give back to my family and my community by making use of the skills that I gained while growing up as a bilingual individual.

      Sandra West ALS Foundation Scholarship
Born in Honduras, I have always hoped for an environment where I could create a better future for myself, but the experiences that came into my way were different than expected. At the age of 15, I left Honduras to come to the United States with my mother and my little brother in pursuit of a better life. Not too long after coming here, my parent received a diagnosis of ALS, which is a fatal neurological condition that restricts physical functions gradually. This created additional pressures to bear within the family, which I never would have thought about at my age. My life and that of my family have been greatly impacted by ALS. The illness that my parents are suffering from demands more attention and medical treatment, which is why I assist my family in coping with these circumstances while also attending to my academic duties and professional responsibilities. As part of my contribution to the family budget, I am working as a receiver and stocker at Lowe's and attending college classes at Florida State College at Jacksonville whenever I can spare the time. This is far from an easy feat, but ALS has taught me how to persevere, adapt, and be disciplined. Acceptance of the Sandra West ALS Foundation Scholarship will be a great relief in my life and help me in overcoming all financial problems that may arise due to taking care of a family of ALS patients. Paying for college and buying books and food is quite difficult with the responsibility of looking after a sick parent. The scholarship money will ease these financial pressures and enable me to devote more time to my studies and personal development. This way, I can have more time to concentrate on my studies, participate in ROTC events, and prepare to go to a four-year college where I wish to study engineering. I took part in various awareness campaigns and fund-raising activities aimed at raising funds and promoting research on ALS and helping patients who suffer from the disease. The experience has helped me realize the difficulties my family goes through due to the condition and made me feel an overwhelming urge to do something to help people cope. Hopefully, I will be able to make an impact through education, mentoring, and social work. ALS has greatly influenced my life and personality. It has helped me become empathic, persistent, and skilled at finding a silver lining among problems. Winning this scholarship will not only give me an opportunity to obtain an education and follow my dreams, but also to balance personal and educational obligations. Reaching my educational and career goals will be an act of recognition of my parent’s persistence and a way to turn the misfortunes our family is experiencing into success.

      Resilient Scholar Award
Being raised by a single parent has contributed greatly to the person I am today as it instilled many important values in me like perseverance and responsibility. Upon the death of my father in Honduras, my mother assumed the role of providing emotional and economic stability for us. Soon after, she made the bold decision to move us to America to give us more opportunities and a bright future ahead. It was not an easy move. We left everything behind – our home, our friends, and our extended family and started a whole new life in another country, where the language, customs, and education system were entirely different. Raising myself in such conditions taught me to become mature at a very young age. School and homework were not the only priorities in my life because I needed to help my mother take care of my brother and participate in other household tasks to assist our single parent in making ends meet. Even though it was sometimes difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel, these hardships have developed my self-discipline and perseverance. Among many other accomplishments that have made an impression on me, one of the biggest accomplishments that affected my perception of myself and others was being part of JROTC. Being a member of this organization taught me to have a sense of responsibility outside the walls of my house, to show dedication and determination, to become a leader and a good teammate, and to take care of people who need help. I learned how hard work can pay off and how much one can achieve if he or she works on oneself. In addition, this accomplishment made me feel compassion toward people who have to struggle just like me, and it showed me the importance of mentoring younger generations. Another accomplishment that I am proud of is playing the trumpet and volunteering for community services. Spending several hours every day practicing the instrument helped me gain patience and concentration, and volunteering in different places and participating in various school activities helped me see the power of my actions. From all of this, I understand what it means to be resilient, to take responsibility and care for one another. Although growing up in a single-parent household is tough, it helps us build resilience, learn responsibility and be caring to others. These lessons motivate me to become successful by pursuing a college degree that will give me an opportunity to help other people while being successful in life. In summary, my childhood in a single-parent family helped me develop my character by teaching me persistence, empathy and the value of hard work. The death of my dad, immigration and adaptation to a new environment was not easy, but now I know that I am able to do great things despite any obstacles. All the accomplishments and insights that I have learned in JROTC, band and in the community helped me get to know who I am and understand my capabilities to affect other people's lives positively.
      New Beginnings Immigrant Scholarship
I am from Honduras, a country full of life that is filled with traditions and family. The turning point of my life came when my father died, making us feel the pain of his death. A number of years after that experience, my mother decided to relocate our entire family to America because she wanted to give us a better chance at life. She took my brother, who is younger than me, and myself to live in another country. By then, I was fifteen years old and had to leave my home, my relatives, and my friends for an entirely new experience. The biggest difficulties came when I arrived in a new country as a first-generation immigrant. I had to learn to communicate in English effectively, cope with strange academic requirements, and deal with awkwardness in different social settings where I constantly felt out of place. There were days when it all got too much for me, but I did not want those hardships to affect my perception of myself. Instead, I involved myself fully into school life by participating in such programs as JROTC, marching band playing the trumpet, and helping out in my community. Such activities have helped me become more of a leader and a team worker and made me feel less like an outsider in a country that once seemed completely foreign to me. The experience of being an immigrant has affected my future career plans. Specifically, I would like to study engineering and become a good engineer since I would like to create something useful and valuable. As far as I understand, engineers create products that improve people's lives making everything safer and easier. My immigration experience has taught me how to overcome various difficulties by myself since my family had to move to a new country, start from scratch and adjust to a new environment. This means that I have learned the main qualities that engineers should possess including patience and the ability to find solutions even in difficult situations. Furthermore, my experiences have shown me that all the problems and obstacles we face are opportunities in disguise since we may become much stronger if we try to cope with everything and not give up. That is why I believe that immigrants need help and encouragement to feel supported and understood. Moreover, it would be great to tell other young people who face many difficulties how to overcome them. In other words, I believe that the process of mentoring and encouraging others is very important for my future professional career. Conclusion, Finally, being a child immigrant who had to leave Honduras, face the loss of a father, and build a new future in America along with my mother and brother has been marked by resilience, determination, and growth. My personal experiences have contributed to shaping my character, driving my aspirations, and motivating my intentions to serve my community. By earning a degree in electrical engineering, I will be able to channel my acquired knowledge and skills to help people. The financial aid provided through this grant opportunity will help me use my adversities to serve my community and become a leader, innovator, and engineer of the future.

Losing my father at a young age was one of the most challenging moments of my life. My dad passed away in Honduras, and suddenly, a part of my support system, guidance, and presence was gone. After his death, I moved to the United States with my mother and brother, leaving behind the home, culture, and life I had always known. Sharing this new life with my family in a completely different country forced me to adapt quickly and grow stronger in ways I never imagined. My father was a hardworking and caring man who always believed in the importance of education, discipline, and perseverance. Although I did not get to spend as much time with him as I wished, his lessons continue to guide me every day. His dedication to providing for our family taught me the value of responsibility, while his dreams for me inspired me to aim higher and never give up, even in difficult circumstances. Moving to a new country without my father challenged me in many ways. I had to adjust to a new school system, learn English more fluently, and navigate a new culture—all while holding on to the values and lessons my dad instilled in me. This experience strengthened my resilience, perseverance, and determination to succeed academically, personally, and professionally. I have applied this perseverance in my academic and extracurricular activities. In JROTC, I learned leadership, discipline, and teamwork, which have been essential in helping me overcome challenges. Playing the trumpet in band has taught me patience, practice, and dedication, while participating in community service has reminded me of the importance of helping others, even when life feels uncertain. “Service is not just about giving; it’s about creating a ripple of positive change.” This idea has guided me throughout my experiences in JROTC, school activities, and community service. From a young age, I have believed that helping others, no matter how small the act, can inspire growth and make a real difference in someone’s life. One of the most meaningful ways I have served my community was by volunteering at a middle school, helping to organize events and decorate for school activities. Seeing the smiles on students’ faces and knowing that my effort helped create a positive environment left a lasting impact on me. It taught me that service is not always about grand gestures; sometimes, the small contributions we make can have the greatest effect. My involvement in band, particularly as a dedicated trumpet player, has also been a form of service. Performing for school events and local programs has allowed me to bring joy and inspiration to others through music. Music has a unique power to connect people, and being part of a group that works together to achieve excellence has reinforced my belief in teamwork, collaboration, and shared purpose. Beyond school, my participation in Latinos Rams and other student organizations has helped me develop leadership skills while supporting my peers. I have witnessed firsthand how education, mentorship, and community involvement can empower others to achieve their potential. These experiences have strengthened my commitment to continue serving my community, both now and in the future. Looking ahead, I plan to use my college education as a tool to extend my impact. I am currently pursuing an Associate in Arts degree, planning to transfer to study electrical engineering, and I aspire to become an officer through ROTC. This path will allow me to serve my country while also mentoring and guiding young people who seek to develop discipline, leadership, and character. My education will equip me with the skills to create meaningful change, combining technical knowledge with a commitment to helping others. In every role I take, whether as a volunteer, musician, student leader, or future officer, I aim to reflect the same spirit of service and compassion that defined the life of Mrs. Marion Makins. Her dedication to education, community, and faith inspires me to use my talents, time, and education to uplift those around me. Service has shaped who I am today, and it will continue to guide me as I work to make a positive and lasting impact in the world.

I have always enjoyed playing chess since childhood. It soon turned into something beyond the game itself, transforming me from a person who was good at playing games into a player with patience and vision. Each time I played, I learned that each step I took had consequences, and that victory was about more than simply defending against attacks but anticipating problems in advance. This has affected how I look at the world around me in relation to both my academic studies and future career aspirations. In terms of my career goals, I would like to work as an electrical engineer and design new technologies to better people's daily lives. This profession necessitates meticulousness, precision, and a solution-oriented approach, all of which I gained through chess. Like playing chess, engineering necessitates assessing various options, forecasting outcomes, and using your imagination to tackle complex situations. Each project in engineering could be viewed as a board game where every decision I make would determine the outcome of the game. The game of chess has helped me develop resilience skills. Every time I play, I am faced with different situations, losses, or setbacks. For example, losing one's piece or performing an incorrect move often leads to disappointment. However, over time, I have learned how to analyze my actions, think about possible changes in the strategic plan and make appropriate adjustments. Thus, playing chess has helped me to develop critical skills that I can apply in real-life situations. When facing challenges at school or in other fields, I always try to act systematically and carefully analyze the situation, considering various scenarios. Lastly, another skill that playing chess made me realize is that of patience and strategic thinking. Indeed, many students often think only of achieving their goals right away; however, chess is associated with the ability to think in advance and predict the consequences of each action. This skill has proven to be useful not only during games but also in my academic performance as well as when planning my further career as a programmer. For instance, whenever I have some work to complete, I think of what steps to take and how to achieve success step by step. Moreover, chess has contributed to the development of my critical and creative thinking skills. I frequently use various unusual strategies during the game trying to discover new approaches which may be successful or not. In the same way, while dealing with challenges on the job, engineers can use their creative skills to develop new solutions. Besides, flexibility and readiness to adapt to changes is also an important skill one must acquire while playing chess. All these abilities will prove helpful in my future career as well. Overall, all these lessons and principles which I learn while playing chess will not only help me become a better chess player, but will also contribute to shaping my personality. As mentioned earlier, chess develops the skill of thorough planning, perseverance, and creativity which play a crucial role in building a successful career in engineering. While obtaining knowledge in this field and developing necessary skills, I should be ready to make reasonable decisions and overcome different obstacles on my way to success.
      Dream BIG, Rise HIGHER Scholarship
My quest for freedom and self-improvement will be accomplished by means of education. Throughout my childhood in Honduras, I saw my mom struggling hard to earn enough money to support us. Ever since then, I learned that determination and hard work are the main factors behind success. The move from my native country to America when I was just 15 years old was the toughest thing ever. There were many difficulties I had to overcome; learning English was the first one. My education became a tool that helped me realize that obstacles should be seen as an opportunity rather than barriers. My initial experiences in my new school were stressful. I recall being confused during classes where the language used was not entirely comprehensible, as well as being unable to keep up with other students' pace in assignment completion. Academics aside, my social life also suffered because I felt like an outsider among my peers. Initially, it seemed easier to surrender or resign myself to a reality where my aspirations may be restricted by my circumstances. However, education became a means for me to build resilience. With each new experience that I underwent and every problem that I solved, I became more conscious of the power of persistence. At school, I also managed to discover what I was truly passionate and ambitious about. Taking part in JROTC and being in the band gave me an opportunity to learn about leadership, discipline, and teamwork. I became aware that there were much more opportunities to apply my skills and abilities than simply to excel academically and become a successful student. Volunteering is something else that became a part of my personal development process; learning to help kids, be of assistance to people who need it, participate in various school and community activities made education even more valuable to me. Learning at school and working on the side provided an additional challenge in my life. Being enrolled in school and having to earn some money for myself at the same time, I learned to manage my time and responsibilities very well and appreciate everything I have. Every hour I worked in order to pay for my education was another step to success and self-realization. Moreover, those challenges and barriers like language differences, financial problems, and adaptation issues made me stronger and more motivated. Education has helped me establish not only my objectives but also a sense of social responsibility. For instance, at the moment, I plan to study electrical engineering at university. This particular specialization appeals to me as it allows applying knowledge to solving important practical problems related to technological advancement. In general, I would like to apply my theoretical skills and competences gained in educational institutions to making people's lives easier, particularly in poor communities lacking technology. It means designing innovative systems that will facilitate people's life making it both more comfortable and more productive. In addition, education has taught me one thing: success is not only personal but also social. Thus, apart from studying hard and working on my goals, I want to encourage others to do the same and support them throughout their educational journey. Therefore, I am willing to become a mentor for young students facing similar challenges as I did and share my experience and knowledge with them to make their way to success smoother. This particular decision demonstrates my willingness to pay back to my educators and mentors who have encouraged me to keep going along this path. Reflecting back on my path so far, I realize that education has played an important role at all stages. Not only has it given me guidance whenever I needed clarity, but it also has boosted my confidence and provided me with countless opportunities. Education made me become the kind of person I am now – a student, a leader, and a community member. All struggles that I had to endure – immigration, language barriers, juggling studies and jobs, and many more – have built up my ambition, helped me become determined enough, and motivated me to make sure my future is also about helping others. At the end of the day, though, my education is just a means to an end and not even necessarily the end itself; instead, it is an invaluable tool and a great privilege. Thanks to the tools it has provided me, I can aspire to do more, go further, and affect change wherever possible. I promise to use my education for the good by helping to find solutions to the problems of my community and instilling a sense of hope and perseverance in those around me through example. The problems that I have had to overcome thus far will help me do that all the better.
      Strong Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship
In my opinion, leadership cannot simply be associated with authority or position; it entails being a source of inspiration and a guide for other people. From my perspective, to become a leader one has to demonstrate such qualities as dedication, endurance, and empathy and use his or her personal strengths to assist other people to attain success. In addition, I believe that becoming a leader involves learning from different life situations and acquiring relevant skills. Being an individual who has certain disabilities, I had to cope with various problems related to both adaptation and participation in extracurricular activities during my years at high school and even now at university. At first, I found it difficult to adapt to the environment and fulfill all the requirements imposed on students. However, overcoming these problems made me a more enduring and empathic person who understands the essence of leadership very well. Having faced numerous difficulties personally, I can inspire and encourage other people in the same situation. One such experience in which I felt the impact of being a leader was in the form of JROTC. In this program, I have had the chance to be a mentor to younger cadets, organizing functions and building teams. This taught me that being a good leader does not mean issuing commands but being able to listen, solve problems, and help people discover their strengths within themselves. It is encouraging, patient and guiding another person towards discovering confidence from within him or herself. Through modeling integrity, resilience, and accountability, I want to set a good example for others. Leading goes beyond simply holding positions of authority; it means being a role model to others even without being appointed to any leadership position. This can be demonstrated in doing everything in my power to help out other students who might be finding some of our lessons difficult or helping others in need such as those from my local area or those with disabilities. In the future, I intend to embody the same traits as a leader in both my professional and personal capacity. I would aim to foster environments wherein every individual feels acknowledged, recognized, valued and is able to reach their true potential. I realize that leadership cannot be described as a single trait; rather, it is a combination of skills and attributes acquired through practice. The experience of being a student with special needs has made me more resilient, empathic and patient. In conclusion, I would say that leadership for me entails a sense of dedication towards others, inclusivity and the ability to inspire self-assurance and development. Leadership does not consist of recognition; rather, it is all about leaving your mark on everything you do. With persistence, empathy and action, I hope to serve as an example for others who may wish to lead with integrity and conviction.

      Sturz Legacy Scholarship
I have always believed that hard work, integrity, and accountability define who a person is, but one experience during high school taught me how challenging it can be to uphold these values when others fail to recognize your efforts. During my junior year in JROTC, I was part of a team preparing for a regional leadership competition. I spent countless hours researching strategies, organizing practice drills, and helping my teammates understand their roles. I was deeply invested because this competition mattered not just for me but for the entire team. I wanted our team to perform at its best and demonstrate the leadership skills we had been learning all year. I took pride in ensuring that every detail, from drill formations to strategy presentations, was planned and executed effectively. I knew that the team’s success depended on all of us working together, and I was determined to contribute as much as I could. In the weeks leading up to the competition, I noticed that some of the ideas and methods I had shared during practice were being presented by another teammate as their own during team meetings. At first, I was shocked and frustrated. It felt unfair that my effort, creativity, and dedication were being overlooked while someone else received recognition. My first instinct was anger and disappointment. I wondered if speaking up would make me seem petty, or if staying quiet would allow the injustice to continue. For a few days, I reflected on how best to handle the situation. I realized that reacting impulsively could create unnecessary conflict and even harm the team’s performance. Instead, I decided to approach the situation thoughtfully and constructively. I documented my contributions, reviewed the team’s preparation notes, and planned a calm and respectful conversation with both my teammate and our instructor. During the discussion, I explained which ideas I had originally proposed and how I had contributed to the team’s preparation. I emphasized that my goal was not to blame or accuse, but to ensure that credit was fairly acknowledged and that everyone understood the importance of honesty and integrity. My instructor listened carefully and spoke to the team about accountability, trust, and respect. While it was uncomfortable to address the situation, doing so ensured that my contributions were recognized and reminded the team of the values we were supposed to uphold. The conversation ultimately strengthened the team. It not only clarified the contributions of each member but also reinforced the idea that integrity and respect should always guide our actions. This experience taught me several important lessons. First, I learned that patience, reflection, and clear communication are far more effective than reacting impulsively. Addressing the situation constructively allowed me to protect my integrity without creating unnecessary conflict. Second, I realized that giving recognition where it is due is not just about fairness—it strengthens trust, morale, and teamwork. Finally, I understood that even when situations feel unfair, handling them with respect and professionalism earns long-term respect from others and builds stronger relationships. I now approach challenges with a mindset of problem-solving rather than blame, focusing on solutions that benefit everyone involved. Since that day, I have applied these lessons to every academic and professional situation I have faced, from group projects in college to volunteering and work responsibilities. I have learned that assertiveness and diplomacy can coexist, and that addressing issues constructively can prevent resentment while maintaining trust. I also learned to pay attention to my contributions and document my efforts, ensuring that my hard work is visible while continuing to support the success of the group. These skills have not only helped me academically but have also strengthened my leadership abilities, allowing me to guide others effectively while remaining fair and supportive. Balancing school, athletics, and work has further strengthened my time management and resilience. As a student-athlete in track and tennis, I have learned how to dedicate myself fully to multiple responsibilities while maintaining a focus on my long-term goals. Athletics have taught me discipline, perseverance, and teamwork—skills that translate directly into academic and professional success. I have learned to face challenges with confidence and persistence, and I now approach obstacles as opportunities to grow and improve. If I were faced with a similar situation again, I would respond in the same way. I would document my work, communicate calmly, and ensure that credit is acknowledged without escalating conflict. I have seen firsthand how this approach encourages a culture of respect and fairness while maintaining healthy relationships. I now know that handling such challenges thoughtfully strengthens character and leadership skills, preparing me for future situations both in school and in the professional world. This experience aligns closely with the values celebrated by the Sturz Legacy Scholarship. Like Marian Sturz, who combined curiosity, courage, and integrity in her extraordinary life, I have learned to navigate challenges with resilience, thoughtfulness, and a commitment to doing what is right. I will continue to carry these lessons forward, applying them to my academic pursuits, my future career in electrical engineering, and my interactions with others in both leadership and collaborative settings. I am committed to building a life in which integrity, perseverance, and respect for others guide my actions, ensuring that I make a positive impact in every community I am part of. Ultimately, this experience was not just about a situation in which credit was taken—it was a defining moment in my personal and leadership development. It taught me how to handle conflict with grace, how to communicate effectively, and how to uphold integrity even when it is difficult. These lessons will remain with me for life, shaping the way I approach challenges, teamwork, and leadership in every context.
      Stephan L. Wolley Memorial Scholarship

      Prince Justice Memorial Scholarship
I am Luis Bardales, a freshman pursuing an Associate in Arts and planning to pursue an electrical engineer major. My birthplace is Honduras. However, I came to the United States when I was only fifteen years old with my mother and younger brother. Being uprooted from your native country to a foreign place is one of the toughest experiences anyone can ever go through. For me, being in America has been a great challenge. Once I started attending classes in America, my main problem was getting accustomed to the language and the education system. Learning and comprehending what was happening in the classroom proved to be difficult at times. But this did not stop me. I used the difficulties as a way to propel myself forward. I put in extra hours of studying and practiced the English language more often than my peers did. Slowly but surely, I started gaining confidence, and I even began succeeding academically. Aside from my academic achievements, I have also taken an active part in leadership and volunteer activities. With my membership in the JROTC program, I gained valuable experience in leadership, responsibility, and teamwork. It allowed me to learn how to inspire others, how to be disciplined, and set a good example. I participated in volunteer activities in local schools and events and helped give something back to the community, which has always taken care of me since I moved to America. Thus, I understood that success does not mean achieving something for myself, but also helping others. Electrical engineering is what I have always wanted to study because I love how everything works and how one can fix any problem. From childhood, I have been fascinated with electronics and how different elements interact with each other. What I would like to do in the future is pursue my passion in order to create a great career. It will allow me to contribute to society through creating useful technological products. At the moment, I combine my studies with work, which instilled in me discipline, punctuality, and independence. Even though sometimes it is quite difficult, I stay concentrated on my aims and encourage myself to move forward. My goal is to create a brighter future not only for myself but also for my family, which worked very hard so that I could receive an education. I am sure that all my experience helped me get ready for overcoming any difficulties on my way. Through diligent work, persistence, and dedication, I will do my best to contribute positively to my society and to those around me. This scholarship will help me devote more attention to studying and strive for success in the career of my choice.
      Teaching Technicians Scholarship
My name is Luis Bardales, and I am a freshman at Florida State College at Jacksonville studying towards my Associate of Arts with the goal of transferring into electrical engineering. I come from Honduras, where I lived until the age of 15, when I moved with my mother and younger brother to the United States. Being thrust into a whole new environment had its fair share of difficulties, especially having to learn a totally new language and adjust to a totally new education system. However, with determination, I was able to overcome these hurdles and strive towards a better future for me and my loved ones. Ever since my childhood, I have found myself intrigued by the mechanisms behind different processes and machines. My curiosity led me to learn more about electronics, repair of small appliances, and even try to figure out how various systems worked. Over time, this interest blossomed into a strong passion for the field of electrical engineering. In particular, I feel passionate about the application of engineering and technology in medicine where it can directly influence people's lives and improve their well-being. Hospitals rely on such technology on a daily basis, and I would like to become one of the specialists maintaining them. Asides from my academic pursuits, I have also been active in volunteering and leadership endeavors. I have assisted at local schools and engaged in various community events that would allow me to give back to the community that I now call home, ever since I came to live here after moving to the United States. As such, through my involvement in JROTC, I was able to learn many things regarding leadership, responsibility, discipline, and teamwork among other things, as I understood what success meant through such experiences. I wish to marry my technical understanding with my philanthropic efforts as well. Therefore, I will seek a profession as either a healthcare engineer or an electrical engineering technologist where I would be able to develop technologies used in medicine that would improve patient care and experience with health centers. Moreover, I wish to serve as a mentor to young individuals who may be in situations as mine and encourage them that nothing holds them back in life when given the proper education. The Teaching Technicians Scholarship will enable me to ease the pressure on my finances and direct all my attention towards learning and personal development. This scholarship will offer me a chance to participate in internships and acquire practical experience that will help me hone my skills and knowledge so that I can be successful in my career. I am committed to utilizing my knowledge and profession to contribute to society and positively affect people’s lives.
      Ruthie Brown Scholarship
For me, higher education is not only about getting a degree; it’s about breaking the cycle. Growing up in a low-income household, I have always been aware of the financial burdens associated with higher education. The concept of student debt is something I do not take lightly, especially because I have witnessed the effects it can have on families such as mine. I have decided to be proactive in thinking about how I will reduce my student debt. Growing up, I learned the importance of money from my family, who always made sure we had the basics. I recognize this, so I also recognize the fact that every financial decision I make will impact my life in the long run. I have decided to be proactive in trying to reduce the amount of debt I will be saddled with in the future. One major way I plan on dealing with the student debt I will have in the future is by continuing to apply for scholarships such as this one. I look at scholarships not only as a way to obtain financial aid, but also as opportunities to be rewarded for hard work and determination. The more scholarships I win, the less debt I will have to pay off, thus bringing me closer to graduating debt-free. I will continue to look for scholarships throughout my academic life. Furthermore, I will be working part-time while I attend school. I know it will be difficult, but I will be willing to make the commitment to juggle both school and work. I will be able to help pay for some of my education, thus lessening the debt I will have, while also helping me develop the discipline I will need to succeed. Another significant aspect of my plan is making a career choice that offers not only security but also opportunities for growth. My career of choice is to become an airline pilot and also pursue a career in engineering. These careers are not only challenging but also require one to take up studies. However, they also offer opportunities for growth and a way of repaying any loans that one might take up in a responsible manner. I am also committed to being responsible with finances. This means creating a budget and being responsible for how one spends money. It also means being responsible when it comes to taking up loans. Being responsible with finances is a virtue that I take seriously. This is because one can get into a situation where one is overwhelmed by debt. In addition to these personal goals, I am also motivated by the need to help my family and contribute to my community. By paying off my own student debt, I will be able to focus on creating a better future for myself and those around me instead of struggling with debt. My personal goal is not only to succeed myself but also to make a success of those around me. In conclusion, I am planning for my future student debt by working hard and being determined. I am applying for scholarships, working while studying, selecting a good career path, and planning for the future to ensure that I am in control of my own destiny. I am determined to make wise decisions today to ensure a successful and stable future tomorrow.
      Our Destiny Our Future Scholarship
Growing up in Honduras, I witnessed what it means to struggle—not just for myself, but for my entire community. I saw families working hard every day and still not having enough. I saw young people with talent and dreams forced to give up on their education because of financial difficulties or lack of opportunity. These experiences shaped the way I see the world and inspired me to want something more—not just for myself, but for others like me. From a young age, I understood that making a positive impact starts with helping those around you. Even in a community with limited resources, people supported each other in small but meaningful ways. Whether it was helping a neighbor, sharing what little we had, or encouraging someone to stay in school, I learned that kindness and service do not require wealth—they require heart. This mindset is what drives my desire to give back. As I continue my education, I plan to make a positive impact by combining my career goals with service to others. I aspire to become an airline pilot while also studying engineering. While this may seem like a personal ambition, I see it as a way to create opportunities beyond myself. Becoming a pilot represents more than achieving a dream—it represents breaking barriers and showing others from backgrounds like mine that success is possible. In addition to my career, I plan to actively support my community. I want to mentor young students, especially those who come from low-income backgrounds or feel limited by their circumstances. I want to share my story and encourage them to believe in their potential. Many students give up not because they lack ability, but because they lack guidance and support. I want to be that support for others. I also hope to contribute to organizations and programs that promote education and opportunity in underserved communities, both in the United States and in Honduras. Whether through volunteering, donations, or creating initiatives in the future, I want to help reduce the barriers that prevent students from reaching their goals. Education changed my mindset, and I believe it can change lives. One of the most important lessons I have learned is that impact is not always measured by how many people you reach, but by how deeply you help even one person. I plan to carry this lesson with me in everything I do. No matter how successful I become, I will not forget where I came from or the struggles that shaped me. My goal is not only to build a better life for myself and my family but also to create a path for others to follow. I want to be an example of resilience, hard work, and compassion. I want people to see that it is possible to rise above difficult circumstances and still choose to give back. Making a positive impact on the world begins with a simple decision: to care about others and to take action. That is the kind of person I strive to be, and that is the legacy I hope to build.
      Ojeda Multi-County Youth Scholarship
Growing up in Honduras, I lived in a challenging environment where difficulties were the norm. Since I was young, I lived in an environment of economic struggle and scarcity of opportunities, making it difficult to envision a different reality. In my neighborhood, people struggled to make ends meet, and education was not always a priority—no matter how important it is—because survival came first. Living in such an environment has also shown me how easily people lose hope. There were many young people who dropped out of school to work or got themselves involved in bad company because they did not have any other option. It was not uncommon to see talent and potential going to waste simply because of the lack of such facilities. Living in such a place was tough, but it also opened my eyes to the need for determination and different choices in life. The greatest challenge I have faced is pursuing my education beyond a certain point due to financial constraints. I knew I had the support of my family to pursue my education to the highest level possible; however, at times I did not have the necessary resources to pursue my education as I would have wanted. At other times, I would be required to attend to other issues at home rather than focusing on school issues. However, I never gave up on my goals. I realized that I had an opportunity through education to build a better future not only for myself but also for my family. I tried to be more focused and disciplined and used whatever opportunities I could find to pursue my education. I tried hard to keep up with my school grades and stayed focused despite the difficulties I encountered. I did not allow my situation to define me; I used it as motivation to strive hard to achieve more. As I move forward, I have taken all of this with me. I have learned how to be resilient, how to be responsible, and how to persevere. I have learned that where you come from does not dictate where you are going. While being from a difficult place has helped me become a stronger person, it has also helped me become a person determined to succeed. As I look to my future, I am focused on making a better future through education. I plan on going to college and achieving my dream of becoming an airline pilot, as well as earning a degree in engineering. I have many passions, and one of them is aviation. I want to use my passions to make a better future for myself, but most importantly, I want to be able to take care of my family and community, and show others from my community that you can make it, no matter where you come from. My experiences while growing up in Honduras have made me the person I am today. My experiences have taught me to always stay strong during difficult times and not to give up on my dreams. My experiences may not have been easy, but they have motivated me to work even harder and aim higher. This scholarship would enable me to carry on with my studies and get closer to achieving my dreams. It would also be a symbol of hope not only for me but also for others who are going through the same experiences. I am committed to making the best of every opportunity that comes my way.
Pierson Family Scholarship for U.S. Studies
Growing up in a poor household, I have learned to recognize early on in life that opportunities are not always equally distributed. I have always seen how hard my family has to work to make ends meet and get by. Education beyond high school is something that always seemed to be a distant dream for me and for people in my neighborhood. Many young people in my neighborhood are forced to grow up and get a reality check on their dreams due to financial constraints. It is not easy to get out of this situation and make something of oneself. It is because of these experiences and observations in life that I have decided to pursue higher education in the United States. I believe that the United States is a place where hard work and determination are rewarded. I believe that the advanced education system and the availability of modern technology make the U.S. an ideal place for me to acquire knowledge and skills not only to improve my life but also to return to my community and make a positive impact on the lives of others. One of the biggest challenges I have faced so far in life has been trying to overcome financial difficulties while keeping up high grades. There have been times when I have lacked the necessary study materials, a quiet place to study, or even the time to study because of other responsibilities I had back home. It was not easy trying to balance all these challenges with keeping up high grades. However, instead of using all these challenges against me, I decided to use them as motivation. I have been able to keep up grades above 3.5. From this challenge, I have learned the importance of resilience, perseverance, and hard work. I have learned that it does not matter where you come from, but it does matter how determined you are to keep moving forward despite the challenges you face. This has helped me become the person I am today. One person who has greatly inspired me is my parent. My parent has faced financial difficulties but has not stopped working hard to support our family. Through their hard work and dedication, I have learned that no matter how difficult the situation may be, one must always stay positive and work hard towards a better future. My future plan after graduating from school is to become an airline pilot while simultaneously studying engineering. My interest in becoming a pilot has always been there, and I believe that becoming a pilot would not only be a success but also a way of achieving a long-awaited dream. Studying engineering would also enable me to understand the technical knowledge of flying and contribute to the advancement of the same. My aim is to become a person who can not only support my family but also contribute to the community by becoming a role model to people who are going through the same difficulties. Furthermore, this scholarship would not only help me to reduce the burden of school expenses but also get me one step closer to achieving my dreams.
      Simon Strong Scholarship
Adversity is something that everyone goes through at one point in their lives. In my case, it was a time of my life when I felt like I was being overwhelmed by having to handle several things at once. I was juggling school, my personal life, and my high expectations of myself. Over time, it had all added up to the point where I felt burnt out and unsure of my ability to keep up. The problem was that I was afraid of failing—not only failing others but also failing myself. I attempted to get through it by putting in more work, hoping that it was just a matter of working harder. However, I came to realize that my approach was not only unsustainable but also unproductive. I was burnt out, and I was not giving my best. This was the point of realization. Instead of continuing with the same approach that was clearly not working, I took a step back. To overcome this adversity, I learned to prioritize what was important and let go of the notion that I had to be perfect at everything. I also learned to divide tasks into smaller, more manageable steps, creating a more achievable schedule for myself. I learned to ask for help when I needed it, something that was not easy for me to do in the past. This was helpful in getting control back over my life. This adversity has changed me in several significant ways. First, I learned to be resilient, not only to overcome adversity but to thrive because of it. Second, I learned the importance of finding a balance in life. I learned to be more aware of who I was and how I spent my time. Finally, I learned that failing or making mistakes was not the end of the world, but an opportunity to learn from them. If I were to offer advice to a person in a similar situation as mine, I would probably say something like this: Don’t be afraid to take a step back and reassess your situation. It’s not always necessary to keep pushing yourself to be successful. It’s also important to understand the reasons for your struggle and be willing to make changes when necessary. Don’t be afraid to seek help when you need it; seeking help is not a sign of weakness but of strength. Most of all, be patient with yourself. Change is not something that happens overnight, but every step you make towards improvement is a step in the right direction.

      Boundless Scholarship
      Winner
I was born in Honduras, where life was not easy. My family struggled financially, and safety was often uncertain. At age 15, I moved to the United States with my mother and brother in search of a better future. Leaving behind everything I knew—my home, friends, and language—was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. We arrived with very few resources and no guarantees. My mother worked hard to keep us afloat, but we often lived paycheck to paycheck. This experience shaped me in ways I never expected and gave me a powerful mindset for overcoming adversity. Poverty has never been just a financial struggle for me—it’s been a daily reminder to work harder, stay focused, and never give up. In my first year in the U.S., I faced a major language barrier. I didn’t speak English well and often felt lost in class. I could have given up or fallen behind, but I refused. I stayed after school for extra help, practiced English at home, and pushed myself to keep improving. Eventually, I not only caught up—I began to lead. I graduated from Englewood High School with a 3.7 GPA while being active in several leadership roles. I was a dedicated cadet in JROTC, where I earned awards for leadership, behavior, and performance. I also played trumpet in the band for several years, spending hours each day practicing, performing, and growing as part of a team. I joined the National Honor Society, Latinos Rams, and also participated in track and tennis. Each of these activities taught me something important: discipline, teamwork, time management, and perseverance. Being low-income meant that I couldn’t afford tutoring, new clothes, or extracurricular fees easily. I worked part-time at Checkers and currently work at Lowe’s to help support my family and save for college. Instead of seeing these challenges as obstacles, I see them as motivation. My financial situation pushed me to be resourceful, independent, and focused on my goals. Now, I am a college student at Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ), pursuing my Associate in Arts degree before transferring to the University of North Florida to major in electrical engineering. I also plan to join ROTC and serve as a military officer after graduation. My goal is not just to succeed for myself—but to give back to my family and community. I want to prove that no matter where you come from or how hard your start was, you can overcome adversity with dedication and heart. My journey has taught me to be bold, curious, and committed to growth. Poverty did not define my future—it refined my mindset. I’ve learned to keep moving forward even when life is uncertain, and I believe that strength will carry me through every challenge I face in college, the military, and beyond. Thank you Luis Bardales
      El Jefe Entrepreneurial Scholarship
Essay: Making a Difference Through Entrepreneurship Hi there! I’m Luis Bardales, and I’m excited to share a bit about myself as I step into my final year as a high school senior here in sunny Florida. Learning, leadership, and serving my community are not just words to me—they’re essential parts of who I am. I’m actively involved in several organizations that have had a lasting impact on my life, including JROTC, the National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, and Latinos Rams. With three years in Band and two in JROTC, I’ve had the privilege of earning medals and certificates that recognize my efforts in academics, leadership, and music. These incredible experiences have instilled in me values like discipline, collaboration, and the strength that comes from perseverance. As a proud son of Honduran heritage and a member of an underrepresented minority community, I deeply appreciate the importance of hard work, family, and resilience in achieving long-term goals. Looking ahead, I aspire to become an electrical engineer and eventually launch my own company focused on developing affordable, energy-efficient technologies for underserved communities. My higher education journey will begin at Florida State College at Jacksonville, where I plan to earn my Associate of Arts degree. After that, I’ll transfer to the University of North Florida to complete my bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering while also participating in Army ROTC. I have a strong desire to serve as a military officer, and I believe this path will give me the discipline, leadership experience, and technical knowledge necessary to build a meaningful business. In my entrepreneurial journey, I am especially drawn to solving problems faced by people who are often overlooked—low-income families, rural areas, and minority communities. Growing up in a household with limited financial resources has made me very aware of the daily struggles that many families experience when it comes to accessing affordable energy, technology, and stable infrastructure. That’s why I want to use my engineering skills to create innovative solutions such as low-cost solar kits, compact power systems, and reliable, accessible devices that can improve everyday life. These kinds of solutions would be particularly impactful in communities like mine and in countries like Honduras, where access to reliable electricity is still a challenge. What truly drives me is the desire to uplift others and create opportunities where few exist. My time in JROTC and in leadership roles across school clubs has taught me that change doesn’t happen by chance—it happens when people take action and lead with purpose. I envision building a business that goes beyond just creating products. I want to develop a company that trains and employs young individuals from underrepresented backgrounds, giving them the tools, knowledge, and confidence to succeed in tech, leadership, and business. My ultimate goal is not only to build a successful company but also to spark a larger movement—one that proves that with the right support and determination, anyone can innovate, lead, and make a lasting difference. Receiving this scholarship would not only help me pursue my education but also bring me one step closer to achieving my dreams and helping others along the way. Thank you so much for considering my application.
