Gregory A. DeCanio Memorial Scholarship
From a young age, I’ve been passionate about helping others, and that passion truly took shape when I joined my local fire department’s junior program at just 13 years old. I remember the nervous excitement of walking into the firehouse for the first time, unsure of what to expect but eager to be part of something bigger than myself. Over the years, emergency services and community involvement have become central to who I am. Through dedication, I worked my way up the ranks of the junior program, eventually helping to revive it after it suffered a sharp decline due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The program had lost momentum, membership was at an all-time low, and morale was slipping. But I saw potential, not just in the program but in the young people who could benefit from it as much as I had. I spearheaded recruitment efforts, organized training activities, and worked with leadership to modernize and promote the program. Slowly but surely, we rebuilt our ranks and reestablished a strong sense of pride and purpose among our members.
Being in this position of leadership taught me the importance of responsibility, trust, and consistency—qualities essential in emergency services but also in life. I found fulfillment not just in the hands-on work, like drills and calls, but in mentoring younger recruits and creating a welcoming environment where they could grow. Watching others thrive because of a space I helped create was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Outside the firehouse, my desire to serve extended into my school and broader community. I took on the role of the first-ever Ex-Officio Student Member on my district's Board of Education, where I represented student voices and worked alongside adult board members on policies that affect all students. This opportunity allowed me to see how change can be made from both the ground level and the decision-making level, deepening my commitment to being involved in every layer of service. I also volunteer at a local hospital, where I assist staff, interact with patients, and gain exposure to the healthcare environment I hope to enter. Each experience—whether responding to a fire call, standing at a board meeting, or helping a patient—has affirmed my belief that real change starts with consistent, compassionate action.
These experiences have shaped my long-term goal of becoming a nurse, a profession that combines technical skill with human connection. I’ve come to realize that my true calling lies in helping people through some of their most vulnerable moments, whether it's a health emergency or a quiet moment of fear or pain. Nursing is not just a career to me—it’s a continuation of the life I’ve already started to build through emergency services and volunteering. I plan to pursue a nursing degree while staying involved in my fire department, and eventually, I hope to become a registered nurse working in emergency medicine. I am especially passionate about serving in high-need communities where access to healthcare can be limited. I want to be the person who shows up—not just physically, but emotionally and mentally—prepared to support others in their toughest moments. I believe the same energy I’ve poured into rebuilding youth programs, advocating for students, and supporting local first responders will help me become a strong, empathetic healthcare professional.
Ultimately, everything I pursue—academically, professionally, and personally—is driven by a deep desire to give back to the communities that raised me. Whether through hands-on emergency care, hospital nursing, or future leadership roles, I want to continue being someone who lifts others up. I know that with the right education, continued service, and the support of scholarships like the Gregory A. DeCanio Memorial, I can make a real difference. This scholarship honors someone who dedicated his life to service, and I strive every day to live in that same spirit—through action, leadership, and compassion.
Thank you!
