As a first-generation Liberian American student, having goals to pursue higher education is something I expect but I have and will overcome. that does not mean it is easy, one of the biggest obstacles I have faced has been applying to high schools. As an incoming sophomore in high school two years ago I was lost when it came to the application process, I had a choice to either go to my home school or apply alone for a school that is a whole different environment than what I was used to. I chose to apply to my current school because I knew that learning and facing something new would help me and my younger siblings when it's their turn. So, I navigated the process alone and got in. Unfortunately, I know when it comes time for college this whole process will have to start over. Even though it is an obstacle I have and will overcome, I know my parents are learning as much as I am especially coming from a different country that did not provide these opportunities
My goal in the future is to go back and help my country, which I call my community. Being educated and going back home shows that we can make it, I have a passion for rebuilding my community, especially after decades of neglect that we suffered, the only way that is possible is by education, from updated school systems, jobs, homes, and even basic necessities that can, unfortunately, have an impact on education. Giving hope and teaching others is how I can give back the most to my community because, at the end of the day, we all deserve to have a chance not just giving back by money but actually listening and educating others does so much more for all.
