My name is London Saxon, and I am a graduating senior at Charles E. Jordan High School in Durham, North Carolina. This fall, I will attend Winston-Salem State University, where I plan to major in Pre-Nursing with a focus on pediatrics.
Service, resilience, and compassion are at the core of who I am. Inspired by my grandfather's story of overcoming homelessness as a teenager, I began creating and distributing blessing bags filled with essential items for individuals experiencing hardship in my community. Through this work, I learned that even small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference in someone's life.
In 2026, after my family's home was destroyed by fire, I became a McKinney-Vento student. While the experience was challenging, it strengthened my determination to persevere and continue serving others. Rather than allowing adversity to define me, I chose to use it as motivation to grow and give back.
My passion for healthcare stems from my own medical challenges as an infant and from witnessing the impact compassionate healthcare professionals can have on families during difficult times. These experiences inspired my goal of becoming a pediatric nurse who provides comfort, hope, and quality care to children and their families.
Grounded in my faith and committed to helping others, I strive to live a life of compassion in action. My goal is to use my experiences, education, and heart for service to make a positive impact in my community and in the lives of those I am blessed to serve.

As a graduating high school senior, my decision to pursue nursing is rooted in experiences that have shown me the powerful impact healthcare professionals can have on patients and their families. Long before I understood what a career was, my life had already been shaped by healthcare.
As a newborn, I experienced serious medical complications that required extensive medical care. Although I do not remember those moments, I grew up hearing my family's story. They often spoke about the uncertainty they felt, and the compassion shown by the nurses who cared for me. Those nurses provided more than medical treatment; they offered reassurance, comfort, and hope during one of the most difficult times in my family's life. Their kindness left a lasting impression on my family and ultimately became the foundation of my desire to pursue nursing.
That inspiration became even stronger years later when I witnessed my newborn cousin experience similar health challenges. This time, I was old enough to understand the fear and emotions families experience when a child is sick. I watched nurses care for not only the patient but also the family members who were searching for answers and reassurance. Seeing the difference, they made reinforced my desire to become a healthcare professional who could provide both skilled care and emotional support.
My interest in nursing continued to grow through volunteer service, including my involvement with the Ronald McDonald House Teen Heart Program. Through this experience, I gained a deeper understanding of the challenges families face when a child is receiving medical treatment. I learned that healing extends beyond the hospital room and that compassion can make a meaningful difference during difficult circumstances.
Another experience that shaped me occurred when my family lost our home in a fire. Overnight, we lost nearly everything we owned and found ourselves relying on the kindness and support of others. During that difficult time, family members, friends, church members, teachers, and community members came together to help us rebuild. Their compassion taught me that caring for people involves more than meeting physical needs; it means providing encouragement, hope, and support when life feels overwhelming. This experience strengthened my empathy and reinforced my desire to serve others through healthcare.
The area of nursing I hope to pursue is pediatric nursing. Children often face medical situations they do not fully understand, and their families frequently experience fear and uncertainty alongside them. I want to be the nurse who helps children feel safe while also supporting and encouraging their families. My goal is to provide the same compassion and reassurance that once inspired me.
I plan to attend Winston-Salem State University and earn my nursing degree so I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families. Through pediatric nursing, I hope to combine clinical excellence with compassion, helping patients heal while ensuring they feel seen, valued, and cared for every step of the way.
Wieland Nurse Appreciation Scholarship
My decision to pursue a career in nursing is deeply personal. Before I ever understood what a career was, my life had already been shaped by healthcare.
As a newborn, I experienced serious medical complications that required immediate and ongoing care. While I do not remember those moments, I grew up hearing the story of how uncertain and frightening that time was for my family. What stood out most in their memories was not only the medical care I received, but the compassion shown by the nurses who cared for me. They provided comfort, reassurance, and hope during one of the most difficult times in my family's life.
That story became even more meaningful years later when I witnessed my newborn cousin experience similar health challenges. This time, I was old enough to understand the fear and uncertainty families face when a child is ill. I saw how nurses cared for more than just the patient. They supported parents, answered questions, eased fears, and brought a sense of calm during stressful situations. Watching the impact, they had on my family helped me realize the difference a compassionate nurse can make.
Those experiences inspired my desire to become a pediatric nurse. I want to be the person who helps children feel safe and cared for during difficult moments while also supporting their families. I understand that healing is not only about medical treatment, but also about compassion, empathy, and human connection.
My passion for nursing has continued to grow through volunteer service, including my involvement with the Ronald McDonald House Teen Heart Program. Through this experience, I gained a greater appreciation for the challenges families face when a child is receiving medical treatment and the importance of providing support beyond the bedside.
The nurses who cared for my family inspired me to pursue this path, but my inspiration also comes from the desire to serve others. I want to combine my passion for helping people with my interest in healthcare to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families. My goal is to provide the same comfort, hope, and compassionate care that once inspired me and helped shape the person I am today. I was especially excited to discover the Wieland Nurse Appreciation Scholarship through the Bold.org scholarship website because it recognizes the compassion, dedication, and commitment to caring for others that first inspired me to pursue a career in nursing and continue to guide my future goals.

My inspiration to pursue a career in the medical field began before I was old enough to understand what healthcare truly was. As a newborn, I experienced serious medical complications that required immediate and ongoing care. Although I do not remember those moments, I grew up hearing how uncertain and frightening that time was for my family. What stood out most in their stories was not only the medical care I received, but the compassion shown by the nurses who cared for me and supported my family.
Years later, I witnessed my newborn cousin experience similar health challenges. This time, I was old enough to understand the fear and uncertainty that families face when a loved one is receiving medical care. I saw how healthcare professionals provided not only treatment, but also comfort, reassurance, and hope. Watching the impact they had on my family strengthened my desire to pursue a career in healthcare.
My interest continued to grow through volunteer service. As a participant in the Ronald McDonald House Teen Heart Program, I had the opportunity to support families whose children were receiving medical treatment. This experience gave me a deeper appreciation for the emotional challenges families face during a health crisis and reinforced the importance of compassion alongside medical care.
These experiences inspired my goal of becoming a pediatric nurse. I want to be the kind of healthcare professional who not only treats patients but also helps children and families feel supported during difficult moments. I understand from personal experience that healing involves more than medicine, it also requires empathy, encouragement, and human connection.
Throughout high school, I have tried to put these values into practice through service. Inspired by my grandfather's experience with homelessness, I created and distributed blessing bags for individuals in need throughout my community. Through church service, volunteer work, and community involvement, I have learned that small acts of kindness can make a lasting impact on someone's life.
As a future pediatric nurse, I plan to make a difference by providing compassionate, high-quality care to children and their families. I hope to advocate for patients, support families through challenging circumstances, and help create positive healthcare experiences during times of uncertainty. My goal is not only to improve health outcomes but also to ensure that every child and family feels seen, valued, and cared for.
The compassion shown to my family during some of our most difficult moments inspired my career path. Through nursing, I hope to honor that example by making a meaningful difference in the lives of others and providing the same comfort, hope, and care that once inspired me.

If I could choose one phrase to describe how I hope to impact society both now and, in the future, it would be "compassion in action." I believe being a positive force is not about recognition or grand achievements. It is about using your experiences, abilities, and opportunities to improve the lives of others.
Throughout my life, I have learned that challenges can either harden a person or inspire them to help others. My own experiences have inspired me to serve. As a child, I faced serious medical complications that later fueled my desire to pursue a career in pediatric nursing. Inspired by my grandfather's experience with homelessness as a teenager, I began creating and distributing blessing bags for individuals experiencing homelessness in my community. Through church and community service, I have learned that even small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference in someone's life.
My understanding of compassion became even deeper when my family lost our home in a fire. In a matter of hours, we lost nearly everything we owned and suddenly found ourselves relying on the support of others. Family members, friends, church members, teachers, and community members showed us extraordinary kindness and generosity. Experiencing that support firsthand taught me that anyone can face unexpected hardship and that compassion has the power to restore hope during difficult times.
These experiences have shaped how I view my role in society. I want to be someone who sees needs and responds to them. As a future pediatric nurse, I hope to care for children and families not only through medical treatment but also through empathy, encouragement, and advocacy. I want to help people feel seen, valued, and supported during some of the most challenging moments of their lives.
Current social norms have also influenced my thinking. We live in a fast-paced world where people are often divided by differences, distracted by technology, or focused on their own struggles. While social media allows us to stay connected, it can sometimes make genuine human connection more difficult. These realities have strengthened my belief that society needs more compassion, understanding, and service. Real change happens when people move beyond awareness and choose to take action.
I believe my greatest contribution to society will be my commitment to serving others with compassion, regardless of their circumstances. Whether through healthcare, community service, or everyday acts of kindness, I hope to be a positive force by helping others overcome challenges and recognize their value. My goal is not simply to succeed for myself, but to use my success to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
Philippe Forton Scholarship
Compassion has shaped my life in ways I did not fully understand until I became older. One of the earliest examples occurred when I was a newborn facing serious medical complications. Although I do not remember those moments, I grew up hearing how frightened and uncertain my family felt as they navigated my health challenges. What they remember most is not just the medical care I received, but the compassion shown by the nurses who cared for me.
My family often shared how those nurses took the time to comfort them, answer questions, and offer reassurance during one of the most difficult periods of their lives. They treated my family with kindness, patience, and understanding, helping them feel supported when they were overwhelmed with fear and uncertainty. Their compassion extended beyond my hospital room and left a lasting impact on my family.
As I grew older and learned more about those experiences, I began to understand that compassion is more than feeling sympathy for someone, it is taking action to support others when they need it most. That lesson stayed with me and inspired me to look for ways to serve people in my own community.
One way I have put compassion into action is through creating and distributing blessing bags for individuals experiencing homelessness. My inspiration came from my grandfather's story. As a teenager, he experienced homelessness before receiving a football scholarship that changed the trajectory of his life. Growing up hearing his story made me more aware of the challenges many people face and the importance of treating everyone with dignity and respect.
When I hand out a blessing bag, I know I am offering more than toiletries or snacks. I am offering encouragement and reminding someone that they are seen, valued, and cared for.
That lesson became even more personal on January 31, 2026, when my family's home was destroyed by a fire. In a matter of hours, we lost nearly everything we owned. Suddenly, I found myself in a position I had never expected. While my family and I were not homeless in the same way many of the people I served were, we were displaced and faced the overwhelming task of rebuilding our lives.
For the first time, I needed many of the same items I had once packed into blessing bags for others. More importantly, I needed the compassion of others. Family members, friends, church members, teachers, neighbors, and even people we barely knew showed up to support us. They provided necessities, encouragement, prayers, and reassurance during one of the most difficult times of our lives. Their kindness reminded me that compassion is not just about meeting physical needs, it is about helping people carry burdens they cannot carry alone.
Experiencing compassion from both sides changed me. I learned what it feels like to give hope to someone in need, and I learned what it feels like to receive it when I needed it most. These experiences strengthened my desire to become a pediatric nurse and reinforced my belief that even the smallest acts of kindness can have a lasting impact. They taught me that compassion is one of the most powerful forms of care we can offer, and it is a value I hope to carry with me throughout my life and future career.

My interest in nursing began before I was old enough to understand what healthcare truly was. As a newborn, I faced serious medical complications that required immediate and ongoing care. Although I do not remember those moments, I grew up hearing how uncertain that time was for my family and how the nurses caring for me became a source of comfort, reassurance, and hope. Their compassion left a lasting impression on my family and ultimately inspired my desire to pursue a career in nursing.
Years later, that calling became even more personal when I witnessed my newborn cousin experience similar health challenges. This time, I was old enough to understand the fear, uncertainty, and emotions families experience when a loved one is receiving medical care. I saw firsthand how nurses not only cared for patients but also supported entire families during difficult moments. Those experiences solidified my goal of becoming a pediatric nurse.
My career goal is to earn a nursing degree from Winston-Salem State University and dedicate my life to caring for children and their families. I hope to become the kind of nurse who provides not only excellent medical care but also compassion, encouragement, and comfort during some of life's most challenging situations. I want every child and family I serve to feel seen, valued, and supported.
Several personal accomplishments have helped prepare me for this path. Inspired by my grandfather's experience with homelessness as a teenager, I began creating and distributing blessing bags filled with toiletries, snacks, and other necessities for individuals experiencing homelessness in my community. Through this effort, I learned that small acts of kindness can have a meaningful impact on someone's life.
My commitment to service also led me to volunteer through the Ronald McDonald House Teen Heart Program. This experience allowed me to support families whose children were receiving medical treatment and gave me greater insight into the emotional challenges families face during a health crisis. Seeing the importance of compassion and family-centered support strengthened my desire to pursue pediatric nursing.
In addition, I have remained active in church, volunteering in children's ministry and participating in community service activities. These experiences have taught me leadership, empathy, and the importance of serving others.
One of the greatest challenges I have faced occurred when my family lost our home in a fire, resulting in my becoming a McKinney-Vento student. Although the experience was difficult, it taught me resilience, perseverance, and gratitude. Rather than allowing my circumstances to define me, I remained focused on my education, continued serving my community, maintained my commitments, and stayed dedicated to my future goals.
My personal health experiences, volunteer service, and commitment to helping others have all confirmed that nursing is the right path for me. They have taught me that healthcare is about more than treating illness—it is about caring for people with compassion and dignity. I look forward to building a career where I can make a lasting difference in the lives of children and families, just as others once made a difference in mine.
Heath's Healthy Hearts LLC Annual Scholarship Award
Receiving this scholarship would provide invaluable support as I begin the next chapter of my academic journey at Winston-Salem State University, where I plan to major in Pre-Nursing with the goal of becoming a pediatric nurse. While I am excited to pursue higher education, I recognize the financial challenges that come with earning a college degree. These funds would help ease those challenges and allow me to focus on achieving my academic and career goals.
This year has tested my resilience in ways I never imagined. In January 2026, my family's home was destroyed by fire. In a matter of hours, we lost not only our belongings but also the sense of stability we had always known. As a result, I became a McKinney-Vento student while continuing to complete my senior year of high school and prepare for college. Despite these challenges, I remained committed to my education and continued to stay active in school, athletics, community service, church activities, and leadership opportunities. Maintaining these commitments while navigating uncertainty strengthened my resilience and reinforced my determination to pursue my goals.
As I transition to college, these scholarship funds would help cover essential expenses such as textbooks, course materials, technology, supplies, transportation, and other educational costs. Nursing is a rigorous field of study that requires significant time, dedication, and specialized resources. By reducing the financial burden associated with these expenses, this scholarship would allow me to devote more attention to my coursework, clinical preparation, and academic success.
The support would also help me remain engaged in service opportunities that are important to me. Inspired by my grandfather's story of overcoming homelessness as a teenager, I began creating and distributing blessing bags filled with essential items for individuals experiencing hardship in my community. Through this work, I learned that even small acts of kindness can have a lasting impact. I hope to continue serving others throughout college and use my education as a way to make an even greater difference in the lives of children and families.
More than financial assistance, this scholarship would be an investment in my future and in the impact I hope to make as a healthcare professional. My passion for nursing was inspired by my own medical challenges as an infant and strengthened by witnessing the compassion and care healthcare professionals provided to my family. Those experiences taught me that healthcare is not only about treating illness but also about offering comfort, hope, and support during difficult times.
This scholarship would bring me one step closer to achieving my dream of becoming a pediatric nurse. Most importantly, it would help ensure that temporary challenges do not become barriers to the future I am working hard to build. I am committed to making the most of every opportunity I receive and to one day giving back to others in the same way others have invested in me.
Women in Healthcare Scholarship
Before I ever understood what a career was, my life had already been shaped by healthcare. As an infant, I faced serious medical complications that required immediate and ongoing care. While I do not remember those moments, I grew up hearing how uncertain everything felt for my family and how the nurses who cared for me became a source of comfort, reassurance, and hope during a difficult time. Their compassion left a lasting impression on my family, and even before I could understand it, healthcare became part of my story.
That foundation took on new meaning years later when I witnessed my newborn cousin experience a similar health challenge. This time, I was old enough to understand the fear and uncertainty that families face when a child is sick. I also saw the difference that compassionate healthcare professionals can make. They cared not only for the patient but for the entire family. Watching those interactions helped me realize that nursing is about much more than medicine, it is about providing comfort, building trust, and helping people find hope during some of life's most difficult moments.
These experiences inspired my decision to pursue a degree in healthcare and ultimately become a pediatric nurse. I want to provide the same level of care and compassion that was once extended to my family. I am especially drawn to pediatrics because children deserve healthcare professionals who understand their fears, advocate for their needs, and help them feel safe and supported.
My desire to help others extends beyond healthcare. Inspired by my grandfather's story of overcoming homelessness as a teenager, I began creating and distributing blessing bags filled with essential items for individuals experiencing hardship in my community. Through this effort, I learned that small acts of kindness can have a meaningful impact. That lesson became even more personal in 2026 when my family's home was destroyed by fire, and I became a McKinney-Vento student. Although the experience was challenging, it strengthened my resilience and deepened my understanding of how quickly circumstances can change. It also reinforced my commitment to serving others, even during difficult times in my own life.
As a woman in the healthcare field, I hope to make a positive impact by leading with compassion, empathy, and service. I want to be an advocate for children and families, particularly those facing challenges or uncertainty. I hope to create an environment where patients feel seen, heard, and valued, and where families know they are not facing difficult situations alone.
My experiences have taught me that adversity does not define a person, how they respond to it does. Through nursing, I hope to combine my passion for helping others with the knowledge and skills needed to make a meaningful difference. Whether I am caring for a child in a hospital room or supporting a family through a difficult diagnosis, my goal is to live out what I call "compassion in action" and leave a positive impact on every life I touch.
