Growing up as a military child, I was surrounded by military life. I moved eight times, lived in four different states, and even got to live overseas in Italy. It felt as though every time I got comfortable living in one place, I would move and have to start all over again. My mom always told my brother and I that we were so resilient for being able to adjust to new schools every time, but it was never hard for me. I strove to make new friends wherever I went and always got involved in school activities, as I had a passion for leadership. I was in the student council in elementary, middle, and high school despite going to nine different schools. Now that I am in high school, I have been in student council since 10th grade serving different positions, I am a member of the Hawaii State Student Council, I am Windward District Student Council President, NHS Secretary, Varsity Cheerleading Head Captain, all while maintaining a 4.2 GPA. I think that being a military child did not hinder me from excelling at new schools, I think that it equipped me with the very skills I needed to succeed. My father deploying three times taught me to stay strong through emotional times. The new schools I went to taught me to be receptive to change. The new friends I met along the way taught me to never judge people before getting to know them. I am eternally grateful to have been a military child, and I would not have traded my experiences for the world. Even though my dad retired in 2021, military life still stuck with me. The new school I went to was not very receptive to the military, due to a cultural misunderstanding of the armed forces. This was shocking to me as I had so much respect for my father. I knew the sacrifices he made for his country and his family. It was not easy saying goodbye to him and only hoping he would return home. My father is my biggest role model and I hope that I can honor him by following in his footsteps and either attending the Air Force Academy or joining once I am finished with college. His influence helped me realize my career passion and I hope to use the lessons I learned as a military child when I join the military myself.
