Somebody Cares About Science - Robert Stockwell Memorial Scholarship
My name is Lola Archer, and I am currently a 12th grader graduating a year early. I’ve always been someone who cares deeply about animals and the world around me. My love for animals has shaped who I am and motivates me every day to work toward becoming a veterinarian. Helping animals, especially those who don’t have anyone to care for them, makes me feel like I’m doing something meaningful. I believe that even small acts of kindness, like giving food, providing comfort, or simply showing care, can make a difference in animal lives.
My interest in science started when I was younger. I loved doing experiments and learning how everything around us connects back to science in some way. As I got older, biology became my favorite subject, especially when I learned about cells and how they function. The idea that something microscopic could control the life and health of every living creature fascinated me. Learning how the body heals, grows, and adapts made me realize how powerful science truly is,and how it’s not just for humans, but for animals too. That understanding made me want to learn more about how I could use science to improve the lives of animals through care and medicine.
What really strengthened my passion was rescuing my current cat, who I found trapped in a sewer drain about two years ago. She was scared, weak, and only about four weeks old, but with time and care, she became part of my family. That experience showed me how powerful compassion and knowledge can be when they work together. I also try to help stray cats and dogs whenever I can, whether it’s giving them food or helping them find safety. These moments remind me why I want to dedicate my life to animal care.
Currently, I am enrolled to attend college in the spring of 2026, majoring in biology. I plan to continue my education to become a veterinarian and work toward a career where I can combine my love for animals with my interest in science. In the future, I hope to open a clinic that not only cares for pets but also helps stray animals get the medical attention and compassion they deserve. I want to be the person who speaks for animals who can’t speak for themselves. Science gives me the tools to do that, and helping animals gives me the passion to do it. Together, they inspire me to keep learning, growing, and working toward the future I’ve always dreamed of.
