Kristie's Kids - Loving Arms Around Those Impacted By Cancer Scholarship
My name is Logan Drummond, and my life changed in an instant when my mom sat me down and told me she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. From that moment forward, nothing felt the same. What followed was a long journey that reshaped my faith, my family life, and my understanding of the world around me.
At home, cancer quickly became part of our everyday reality and changed the way I saw faith and family. Before my mom’s diagnosis, faith was not a central part of my life, but that shifted as I watched her begin to pray and lean on God in ways I had never seen before. I began praying with her, even when I did not fully understand how to process what was happening. As her treatment progressed, I helped her through small but meaningful moments, like choosing wigs when she lost her hair. My family also began attending Pecan Grove Baptist Church, which became a place of stability for me. Serving through Vacation Bible School and church events gave me a sense of purpose when everything else felt uncertain.
As time went on, the emotional weight of my mom’s illness deepened and tested our strength in ways I was not prepared for. When we learned the cancer had continued to spread throughout her lymph nodes, it became one of the hardest moments our family had faced. My mom struggled emotionally and stopped attending church for a time, but I continued going and leaned heavily on prayer for strength. Even after months of chemotherapy, the relief was temporary. Her double mastectomy left her physically exhausted and confined to bed for weeks, and I found myself stepping into a more grounded role at home while continuing to serve others through church, so I could stay steady during an unstable time.
In addition to the emotional and spiritual impact, my family also began to feel the financial strain that came with long-term medical care. Over time, the cost of treatment and missed work created a level of stress we had never experienced before. For the first time, I began to see how deeply illness affects more than just a person’s health; it affects stability, opportunity, and daily life. That realization is what led me to develop a strong interest in economics. I now see it as a way to understand how financial systems impact real families during a crisis. Because of this experience, I plan to pursue a degree in economics so I can help others navigate financial hardship and bring stability to situations that often feel overwhelming.
Cancer changed my life in painful ways, but it also shaped my character and my direction. It strengthened my faith, deepened my compassion, and gave me a clearer purpose for the future. This scholarship would ease the financial burden of college and allow me to focus fully on my education and my goal of helping others through life’s most difficult challenges.
