Byte into STEM Scholarship
Growing up in Gary, Indiana, from 1997 to 2015, my life was profoundly shaped by the systemic de-funding of our public schools. Resources were scarce; STEM programs were not an option. Amidst these external challenges, I navigated deeply personal battles: childhood obesity, eating disorders, and later, a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. This confluence of limitations and personal health struggles instilled an unyielding resilience and a clear, unwavering mission: to master healing in its most comprehensive form.
My lived experience became the crucible of my passion for medicine. I intimately understood obesity’s physical toll, the insidious grip of eating disorders, and bipolar disorder’s fluctuating landscape. These challenges forced me to confront the undeniable connection between mind, body, and spirit. My journey through management and recovery taught me the critical importance of a "whole-person approach"—a realization born from necessity, where true healing demanded addressing every facet of my being. This understanding transformed obstacles into empathy and a relentless drive for scientific inquiry and holistic understanding.
My commitment to service and leadership began during six years in the U.S. Navy. Operating in demanding environments, I honed invaluable skills in discipline, critical thinking, and program management. This military experience, a non-traditional STEM pathway, immersed me in applied principles. I learned to understand complex systems, solve problems under pressure, and adhere to rigorous health protocols. Beyond technical skills, military service also demanded immense personal resilience, providing a framework for managing complex internal and external environments, further solidifying my ability to adapt and persevere.
Upon transitioning, my passion for the human body led to six years as a personal trainer. In this role, my "whole-person approach" took tangible form. I learned that true fitness extends beyond exertion, encompassing nutrition, mental fortitude, and consistent healthy habits. Guiding diverse clients was a direct form of community service—uplifting spirits and transforming lives. This cemented my conviction that a comprehensive, empathetic approach, one that acknowledges a client's mental and emotional state as much as their physical one, is paramount to fostering lasting well-being.
My Medical Assisting vocational training at UEI College is my crucial next step. This certificate program provides immediate, practical clinical skills and invaluable patient interaction. It is a strategic move, gaining foundational medical knowledge while working towards my long-term goal: to become a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) specializing in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R). The osteopathic philosophy, with its holistic view, perfectly aligns with my "whole-person approach." PM&R, focusing on restoring function and enhancing quality of life for individuals with disabling conditions, directly addresses my passion for empowering those who have faced physical and mental health challenges, much like my own journey.
My education will not merely be personal achievement; it will be a powerful tool for profound impact. As a Black learner pursuing STEM, I am keenly aware of disparities in representation and access that often hinder aspiring professionals from communities like mine. My lived experience provides unique empathy, allowing me to connect with and advocate for patients beyond textbook knowledge. I plan to use my education to create a more inclusive healthcare workforce, bolstering diverse perspectives in medicine. Beyond clinical practice, I aim to mentor and inspire future Black learners to pursue STEM, particularly in medicine, serving as a tangible example that systemic and personal hurdles can be overcome. By championing integrated, patient-centered care and advocating for equitable access to health and educational resources, I intend to uplift others and contribute to a healthier, more inclusive community for generations to come.
Frederick and Bernice Beretta Memorial Scholarship
It was just this morning, a wave of familiar frustration washed over me as a chronic foot condition flared, forcing an unexpected visit to the ER and disrupting my meticulously planned day. This recent reminder of my own physical vulnerability, coupled with years of witnessing my family navigate their own health challenges—some visible, others silently endured—has profoundly shaped my worldview and ignited an unwavering mission: to become a true healer.
My journey toward this mission began not in a clinic, but through lived experience. Watching loved ones grapple with illnesses, experiencing their pain, resilience, and sometimes, the limitations of traditional care, planted the initial seed. I learned early that health extends beyond the absence of disease; it encompasses one's mental fortitude, emotional well-being, and ability to engage with life. This realization laid the groundwork for my understanding of a "whole-person approach," a concept I later learned is central to effective healing.
This comprehensive view of health has guided my diverse professional path. My six years of service in the U.S. Navy instilled in me the discipline, leadership, and problem-solving skills necessary to navigate complex situations. Following my military career, my six years as a personal trainer and group fitness instructor allowed me to actively help others pursue their physical well-being, always integrating a holistic perspective that accounted for nutrition, mindset, and sustainable habits. Now, my Medical Assisting vocational training at UEI College is solidifying the clinical foundation, providing me with the essential practical skills and medical knowledge to step confidently into a healthcare environment.
My ultimate aspiration is to become a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) specializing in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R). This specialty, with its inherent focus on restoring function and enhancing the overall quality of life, perfectly aligns with my commitment to "whole health." I am drawn to PM&R's emphasis on treating the individual and their functional capabilities, rather than just isolated symptoms. This echoes the dedication of physicians like Frederick Beretta, who, as an old-school practitioner, understood the profound importance of tending to his patients' complete welfare, even extending to house calls and weekend rounds.
This scholarship, which honors the compassionate legacies of Frederick and Bernice Beretta, resonates deeply with my journey of self-improvement through education. My path, forged by personal health struggles, family experiences, and a disciplined pursuit of knowledge, is dedicated to empowering others to achieve their fullest health and functional potential. As a committed resident of San Diego County, I am driven to contribute to a healthier, more resilient community, embodying the very spirit of care and betterment that this scholarship seeks to support.
