My freshman year at Texas State University was a big financial challenge because the tuition was around 6,000 dollars a semester after the financial aid I received. The first semester put my family and I on really tight budget to the point where I had to put nearly 2,000 dollars of my own money to make it possible to get through the semester. The effect of this had me budget my money extremely because after paying for tuiton, I only had 200 dollars left in my bank account. I wasn't able to find a job around campus and I didn't have a car at the time to get around to other potential jobs outside of campus. Paying off the first semster was only possible because of the money I contributed from my savings, but it still had my family in a financial chokehold that we knew would be a problem in the second semester.
Moving into the second semester, the tuiton remained the same cost, but the first semester bled through our family's finances making it near impossible to meet the payment plan deadlines. My family and I had talks of me transferring before the semester started, but my dad insisted that I stay away from home and get the full college exprience. My mom and I went against this decision due to the cost, but my dad said he could pay majority of the tuition as my mom made it very clear that she didn't have the money to do another semester without my contribution. So I ended up staying at Texas State University for the 2nd semester and it wasn't a good decision due to my mom not being able to provide much towards the tuition and my dad contributing little to nothing towards the tuition. We missed the last 2 payment plans and still had to pay around 3,600 dollars by the time the semester ended. This put me on academic hold and stopped from being able to transfer for about 2 months after the last day of the semester. The financial burden affected my parents' relationship and eliminated the communication between them for a while. We ultimately had to ask my grandparents for a loan that I would be forced to pay back over the years of me working it off. I wasn't too happy about that because I voted for me to come home before the 2nd semester started in order to avoid another high tuition for the semster. However, it needed to be done and I got admitted into University of Houston, but I was admitted pretty late into the summer which caused me to not have ideal class options for registration. Overall, it was still the right decision, but the financial effects that my freshman year at Texas State University left was lethal to my family and I.

My name is Lloyd Lindley, and I'm from Houston, Texas. I'm attending the University of Houston in Houston, Texas. I love to watch and analyze sports, play video games, and hang out with friends. I'm pursuing an engineering degree, and my main focus is Computer Information Systems. Coming from a single-mother household has constantly kept my life on a swivel. Ever since I was a toddler, we would keep moving in and out apartments which caused me to move elementary schools on the latter half of my elementary years. Transportation was always a challenge because I had to take the bus across the town to my elementary school on the northwest side of Houston and that would mean I had to wake up extremely early and I got home extremely late. Despite this, I maintained really good grades up until I moved schools closer to my grandparents house, but this came at the cost of leaving all my friends and teachers I loved behind me as I transferred to a new school. However, I remained resilient and became used to adapting to the new environments I was being placed in and making the best of my situation.
I chose to major in engineering because I think that it's a degree that can be used worldwide because it demonstrates the necessary knowledge that most businesses require when you first start off working. Currently, I work for Uber Eats as a way to make money and help build my resume since this is my first summer working. However, I do intend to scout for some internships entering my sophomore year in college. I'm planning to transfer from Texas State University to University of Houston to move closer to home and cut expenses that burdened my family and I during my freshman year. I intend to scout for internships within these fields to get my feet wet and see how I can build my name from the ground up.
I plan to make a positive impact on the world by giving back to other struggling families. I've seen firsthand how hard my mom has worked to give me the best life she can on her own and I want to let other struggling single parents know that they're not alone and that they're appreciated it. I want to make their lives easier with a bunch of giveaway and charitable offers to help improve their children's live. I'm the only child and it's been a roller coaster financially for my mom and myself, but those out there with multiple children have it much worse. I already participate in multiple non-profit activites with my father since he works on getting less fortunate people items they need like food and other supplies. We also participate in toy drives around christmas time, so I would like to continue down that path to help other struggling families that rely on one parent.

Volunteering at the West Houston Assistance Ministries for a month was a very humbling experience because I was able to connect with people who have different struggles in life. Some people needed food and had no transportation, some people were seeking residence assistance in obtaining a house, and some people just wanted luxury items to help themselves or their families' situation. Throughout that month I participated in multiple food drives that allowed the less fortunate to drive through and receive a certain amount of food like protein, vegetables, and some snacks. We also did walk-ins where it was kind of like a grocery store environement in where people could shop and pick out through a select amount of items completely free of charge. I also got insight on my dad's position of trying to provide housing for people who have gone through rough times and the requirements they had to meet to continue to receiving housing assistance up to 12 months. It was a stressful time because our mission was to try to help better the less fortunates' lives, but some tried to overstep and take advantage of the opportunities we were offering. However, it was humbling to connect with people who go through unimaginable struggles and keep a positive outlook on life despite their circumstances. Their resiliency to keep striving to improve their lifestyle for their families is selfless and I learned that things could always be worse and to thank my blessings. There were so many kind people who loved interacting with us workers and the conversations we had were just normal conversations about life . Majority of the people weren't rowdy, impatient, or even rude, but instead patient and a joy to interact with. Volunteering for them during my summer of senior year was a very enjoyable experience and I'm glad my dad pushed me into giving his company a shot. It was hard work, but it was all worth it knowing that I potentially made somebody's living situation better for them and their family.

I'm currently in the process of transferring to University of Houston and my area of focus is Computer Information Systems (CIS) under the Business college. I also believe business isn't as stressful as other majors and I prioritize my mental heath over anything. So far, the classes I have been taking for business have been interesting and the people in these classes are social and easy to communicate with. Internships are also very present in the College of Business since so many corporations look for young interns to do the small paperwork in the office that takes a tedious amount of time. Doing internships helps establish my name in the workplace and gives you a mini glimpse of what's to come if that company values your work ethic for that short amount of time. I specificlally chose Computer Information Systems because of my experience of working technology and more specifically, Microsoft Office Applications. I've been familiar using these tools since a young kid. I've always been fascinated understanding the process of how operations are ran within multiple companies using Information Systems and how they're essential to ensuring all the logistics of the company is up to code. I plan to use this degree to try and get into a management role in a distribution and logistics field or use my computer skills to work in tech support. This scholarship would not only help me, but help my parents who are also assisting me in paying my tuition for the upcoming semester. For my freshman year, we had to pay about 10 thousand dollars out of pockets and it put our family on a very strict budget while also causing us to be unable to pay my tuition payment plans on time. The tuiton also compromised our goal of getting another car for me to use and I'm currently still using my mom's car since that's the only car that we have. This scholarship would help further advance my life as I will be able to purchase the transportation that I need and help fund for other materials such as textbooks, school supplies, and tuition for classes that I'm going to register for. I intend to use this scholarship money only for necessities and not spend it on nonsensical items as I don't really care for luxury items since I prefer a simplistic lifestyle. The scholarship would help my family more than myself and it'll help me avoid having to apply for loans and being forced to worry about paying interest in future years.

My love of learning has shaped my personal growth and influenced my outlook on life by broadening my horizons for learning a multitude of different subects inside and outside the classroom. Inside the classroom, my learning experience has encouraged me to aim for the highest academic goal I can achieve, but it also influenced my love for math and science by pushing me to take advanced courses on those subjects over the years. Additionally, my love for learning has been expanded outside the classroom aswell. I became more curious about astrology and all other things space and universe related, alongside learning more about history and how people have evolved over time to form the society we know today. I also became fascinated in meteorology and how natural disasters take place due to increased global warming and the effects that global warming will have on our planet in the coming decades/centuries. An experience that inspired my curiosity was my time during my AP World History class because of how my teacher made it entertaining and his ability to thoroughly explain every little detail in a way to help all the students understand it. His communication skills allowed for a very comfortable and transparent learning environment and he always boosted his students' confidence no matter how they performed. He got me so interested into history that I began to constantly self study about current units we were learning about and I loved to stay after class and have conversations about class or other things that we had in common. I have always been challenged on determining my perspective on life since I'm an only child and I have to figure out things first hand. Also, my parents split when I was a toddler so I've experienced plenty of situations within both families. Both sides have helped me gain a deeper understanding of the world since both sides of my family are minorities. They've taught me how to stay out of trouble, be a jack of all trades, and helped develop my awareness of events that place around the world by introducing me to the news at a young age. Them introducing me to a variety of topics through informational shows helped develop my passion for the future. I always strive to be consistent and relatable on alll subjects to truly connect with other peers around me and it fuels my passion on how to connect and learn on operations within businesses and essential connections to bring success within my future

I decided to choose business as my path of interest because I believe it's an universal degree that you can take to any level of employment. It's really helpful down the long road of my career and it'll show that I'm trainable and willing to learn how to run my own business or how to better a business. I intend to make an impact for my parents and my future family by making sure that they won't have to struggle financially like my family has. I want to leave behind a legacy that'll be carried by my future family and also help them live more lavish than I have as a child. Retiring my parents is the biggest thing on my bucket list because they've worked so hard since they were teenagers to provide for me since they had me when they were young, so it's always been tight in the money department. I feel like that's the one way to pay them back on all the time and energy they've given to make sure I have the best opportunities possible.

I intend to use the scholarship to reach out to other underprivileged people on the need to be passionate about their dreams and how they can be the change for the future and to embrace the history brought upon them from their families. I think it’s key to emphasize to people the resources available to help them succeed no matter what their goals are. Coming from a low to middle class family, it’s important to emphasize that they can be the ones to break the mold and start a new life for their generation. I would also like to influence my peers around me to not fall into peer pressure, especially after some incidents on campus that have taken place recently. People worry about fitting in so much that they suppress their real selves in order to fit in with others, some not even being important people for their future. Being a middle class citizen has impacted my family a lot because both my parents are separated. My mom is the single parent funding my college and my dad is also funding my college, but he makes even less than my mom. We never had too hard of financial hardships but we didn't have splurge money either and that's why I make it my mission to apply for as many scholarships as possible to lessen the financial burden placed upon my parents. I've also have had many relationships with friends of different socioeconomic classes from top to the bottom. The difference in lifestyles are night and day because one side lives without worrying about money and slightly entitled compared to other side where they have to work at a young age just to support their family. I've seen my peers be exhausted and sleep in school because they've taken on full time jobs during the weeks. On the other hand, the more financially stable people don't work at an early age as much and have better access to connections in the job world once they get out of high school since their parents might be connected with some higher-ups at a company. Luckily, I've been in a position where I didn't have to work as a student in high school because my parents did their best to allow me to live as a student first. So in turn, I want to pay it back to them in the future, but right now, I want to lessen the burden of college as it is.

Education is important because it teaches you how to be well-rounded in many different areas of study. It also helps you figure out what subject suits you the best or which subject you don't find interesting so when the future comes, you won't waste any time taking that subject in college. Education is a privilege that teaches you something new everyday to keep the cogs turning in the brain. It helps introduce problem solving skills, critical thinking, and process of elimination on some assignments. Nobody is perfect in learning, but education always provides improvement of those skills somebody could be struggling on. There's so many resources that can help sharpen the mind or make the stuff somebody is learning much more clearer because some teachers have a hard time getting the message of a subject across to the students in class. Education can take you far in life once you achieve a degree, since it looks really good on one's application and resume because employers want somebody who is smart and trainable. It also brings good social interaction because the people who are studying the same subject might be able to get help from each other if some people don't fully grasp the concept they're learning.
Education has brought value to me in many ways through school, online videos on YouTube, and articles about world events. These things have sharpened my mind and made a well-rounded person who is semi-qualified to talk about almost any subject with others, or at least grasp the concept of what others are talking about. It also helped me peaked my interest in stuff like history, engineering, the solar system, sport statistics, and music genres. Education has also helped in social environments, it keeps people a common interest to talk about and it's a good ice breaker to talk about with people I'm unfamiliar with. It also taught me a better sense of maturity, since I'm the one responsible for turning in my work on time and my parents aren't gonna bug me about tests and assignments and if I did them or not. The value is underappreciated at times because education has been apart of my life for 15 years now and I'm still learning stuff in school and about myself and how I study and do assignments and write essays to this day. It is a very essential part of my life and I wouldn't have any other way.

I like to volunteer for my Dad's non-profit during the holidays and I like to spend time with my family whenever I come home from my university. Doing those internships helps establish your name in the workplace and gives you a mini glimpse of what's to come if that company values your work ethic for that short amount of time. I have many successful family members who benefitted from getting their masters business degree and they make a lot of money. That's my plan as well, make a lot of money so I can retire my parents since they worked hard to put me through this first year of college alone and I feel like I have to pay it back to them. Another reason I want to pursue business is because my uncle who works in the Computer Science field wants to open his own company and keep it family oriented and pass it down once he retires. I plan to find a company that'll pay me around 60-80 thousand a year so I can pay off any potential debts from college and then start working on building equity and purchasing a home. I plan to find some internships with big corporations and have my career mapped out in my early 20s and plan to pursue it around my mid 20s so I can start off creating a portfolio/resume making a name for myself for future employers. Covid-19 was a rough time for me mentally, it isolated me from my friends, turned me into a recluse who just lives in the bedroom, isolated me from my dad on Christmas break, and overall just brought so much paranoia into my life about socializing and getting sick. I overcame this by making new friends online, getting involved with giving back to the community around me who were devastated by the virus, and picking up new hobbies like working out, analyzing sports games, and streaming on Twitch.

My name is Lloyd and I'm from Houston, Texas. I'm a Freshman attending Texas State University and I'm the only child on both sides of my mom and dad since they split up when I was a toddler. I'm interested in statistics, film studying sports games, video games, and basketball. I like to volunteer for my Dad's non-profit during the holidays and I like to spend time with my family whenever I come home from my university. I chose to major in business because I think that it's a degree that can be used worldwide because it demonstrates the necessary knowledge that most businesses require when you first start off working. I also believe business isn't as stressful as other majors and I prioritize my mental heath over anything. So far, the classes I have been taking for business have been fun and interesting and the people in these classes are social and easy to communicate with. Internships are also very present in the College of Business since so many corporations look for young interns to do the small paperwork in the office that takes a tedious amount of time. I plan to make an impact on my community through my education by spreading the knowledge I gain from college and potentially starting up a business around my community. I want to hire people from around the community if I can because they would understand the wants and needs of the community compared to anybody living on the outside.

1) Being the first member of my family to obtain a college degree means a lot to me because I promised my grandma that I would get a degree no matter how long it took. It also means a lot to me since my mom never went to college since she had me when she was just out of high school, so she has always told me to go get my degree and go far with my career so I won't have to worry about money at a young age like her. My grandparents also didn't get a degree since they migrated from Mexico, they built their lifestyle off hard work and blessings, so they're extremely proud to see me go to college.

LeBron James Fan Scholarship
Lebron James is who got me into basketball back when I was a child. I followed him throughout my whole life, he inspired me to play basketball, he inspired me to never give up after coming back down 3-1 versus the warriors in the finals. His excellence across 22 years of basketball is nothing short of insanity, he's been dominating the league longer than I've been alive. I do think Lebron is the Goat and it's not even a debate anymore. The 4 rings, the 4 MVPs, the all time leading scorer of the game of basketball who also has 10,000+ rebounds and 10,000+ assists to go along with the scoring. We've never seen a player like LeBron James before, a player who you can plug into any era of basketball and still be dominate just off of god given ability alone. He's still breaking records to this date and has added another Olympic gold medal, as well as being the United States flag bearer for all of the U.S. Olympic members to show his influence on and off the court. He's a wonderful man off the court, opening schools and constantly giving back to the communities in need. He makes times for fans at games, he's a valued leader to his teammates who look up to him as the veteran who has been through it all. I argue that LeBron James is and will be the best sports icon of all time when it's all said and done.
