The overarching goal present in my life is to become a person who can make a difference in the world and impact the lives of those around me directly. Therefore, I intend to pursue a college education to become a high school English teacher. Teachers are some of the most influential people in life, for almost every person has interacted with multiple teachers in their lifetime. Teachers have an opportunity to not only teach their students the specific subject of the classroom but to also teach the necessary skills every person needs to succeed in life. I want to teach English specifically because I also have a passion for reading, writing, and studying literature. Books are a truly beautiful form of art in this world. Words can undoubtedly make a difference. Thus, I wish to become an English teacher, a profession where I can teach my students about not only the beauty and influence of literature but also the beauty and influence each person can have in the world.

I have chosen to pursue a career in English Education for two main reasons: 1) I believe literacy is key to a successful life. 2) I wish to inspire others through the art of literature. The ability to read and write is a foundational skill that is imperative for every individual to have. As an English teacher, I hope to build upon the already existing literacy skills of my students and aid in their growth as readers and writers. An improved sense of literacy allows a person to better communicate their thoughts, feelings, and ideas. I strive to have a classroom in the future that encourages and fosters growth in the literacy skills of each of my students.
I also wish to inspire my students by introducing them to various forms of literature and writing. English seems to be a commonly disliked subject, often dubbed as “boring.” However, English is truly the most artistic course found in the average high school’s core curriculum. Literature has been used all throughout history to express new ideas, discuss taboo topics, and make an overall impact on society at the time. By reading books from a different time period, a reader can step back in time and learn about the ideals of a certain era. Literature is also an astounding way to express emotions, stirring the feelings of both the reader and the writer. English is, above all, an art form. I aspire to be a teacher who engages my students entirely, sharpening their understanding of the impact literature can make.
I have always been rather fond of English. I have always had a knack for writing and reading comprehension, so my Language Arts classes have always come to me. I did not begin to truly adore English, though, until my freshman year of high school solely because of the way my teacher presented the subject. My freshman year was the first time English was more than just a simple reading and writing class. There was a greater purpose behind every piece we read; we did not merely find “the main idea” and call it a day. We dissected passages, found the purpose, and then found the purpose of that purpose. I saw literature in a whole new light. Forms of writing were not simply words on a page; they were a means to change the world. The impact literature has had on the world is inestimable, and the power of words is real. I thank my freshman-year English teacher for broadening my view on English as a subject. It is because of her effective and engaging teaching style that I so greatly adore English and wish to pursue an education in the subject. The passion for this subject that she handed to me will guide me through my journey in post-secondary education and will overall help me achieve my professional passion.
