Bio

My life goals include raising a strong family while helping as many people as possible in my sphere of influence. Some of my greatest passions are growing as a musician with guitar and voice along with songwriting, and being a role model for others, specifically children. I would be a great candidate because as a child cancer survivor and someone who was bullied as a child, I have a different level of empathy and compassion for others. One boy after hearing my story told me he was no longer going to commit suicide because I had given him hope to go on. With my five years of children's ministry experience, I have a heart to give back to children as a worship leader/children's ministry leader. I would describe myself as a person who has been through a lot but has tried to make the best of my situation by using each difficulty to learn and grow so I can help others.

    Bold Mentor Scholarship
I hope to have a lasting impact through my mentorship of others. I have been volunteering helping children for the last five years almost every Sunday and in summer camps for three years. Mentoring little ones is like caring for seeds as they are just sprouting so they have a great starting foundation. I have also been a leader in youth theater for three years earning the Brave Heart character award mentoring those around me. I learned that I can make a difference in other people's lives by sharing my story. After one of the meetings where I spoke on my being healed from cancer when I was fourteen and how I overcame being terribly bullied as a child, this boy came up to me and said he was going to commit suicide, but after hearing me, he changed his mind as he felt encouraged that he too could overcome his difficulties and get the help he needed. This moment marked me for wanting to spend the rest of my life helping to give hope and transformation to others. I am so passionate about music because of how it helped to bring me out of a dark place in my life as I was battling cancer and depression. Music gave me a purpose in making the world a better place as I had a second chance at life. Being a worship leader for school and youth group helped me discover that music can really change the atmosphere and people's whole state of mind. I realize that I am mentoring people by bringing them into a joyful place. This is the best feeling ever as people tell me how much my singing encourages them. Thank you for considering me as this scholarship as it would be life changing.
    Carl’s Music Matters Scholarship
Devin Chase Vancil Art and Music Scholarship
Music and art are important to society because they help people express their emotions in a healthy way; they bring joy, meaning, and vibrancy to life, and they bring freedom and healing. My name is Dan Lee. I am a senior in high school. I would like to share with you why I think music is so important to society, and how I am using my passion for music to create positive change. First of all, being in Concert Chorale, Jr./Sr. Ensemble, and the Metro Kansas City Honors Choir have given me opportunities to develop my singing passion and share the beauty and excellence of music with others along with giving me a broader perspective of how important music is in our society. Also, my involvement in over twenty shows of musical theater has helped bring joy to the Kansas City community. My favorite role was as Gaston from Beauty and the Beast as it brought laughter to so many. However, the main reason that I am so passionate about music is because of how it helped to bring me out of a very dark place in my life as I was fighting acute promyelocytic leukemia, a rare form of cancer when I was fourteen, and also depression from being bullied for several years as a kid. Music gave me a purpose in making the world a better place as I had a second chance at life. After my Dad taught me five chords, I taught myself how to play guitar and now can play any song. I have also picked up playing the piano, taking lessons so that I have two different instruments to help whatever musical team I play with. Singing and playing as a worship leader for school chapels and my youth group helped me discover that music can really change the atmosphere. I realize that bringing others into a joyful place is the best feeling ever. People telling me how much my singing encourages them is indescribable. Songwriting has also been a way to express my feelings and has brought a lot of healing to me. Being able to share these songs with others to help them is so rewarding. The song in the link is one of the songs I wrote after being healed from cancer and freed from bullying. It is about not becoming cold hearted when there are ongoing difficulties in life. I have been volunteering helping children for the last five years almost every week. I learned that I can make a difference in other people's lives through music and by sharing my story. After one of the meetings where I shared on my being healed from cancer and how I overcame being bullied, this boy came up to me and said he was going to commit suicide, but after hearing me, he changed his mind as he felt encouraged that he too could overcome his difficulties and find help. This moment marked me for wanting to spend the rest of my life sharing music to give hope and bring transformation to others. I plan to be a musician/worship pastor to share music with as many people as possible. Thank you for considering me for this scholarship as it would truly be life changing for me and all those who will be helped through my music. I would love to represent Devin to help keep his memory alive and to inspire others. If there is any opportunity that you would like me to help with, I would be so glad to do whatever I can. I can be reached at 816 824-8769.

    Bold Wise Words Scholarship
The wisest thing I have ever heard is: "He is no fool who gives up what he can not keep to gain what he can not lose." Giving hope to others is very important to me because as a child cancer survivor, I have been given a second chance at life so I know it is a precious gift to share with others to make this world a better place. When you think you might die as a kid, you think about what really matters in life. When you get right down to it, the only thing that really matters at the end of our lives is our relationship with God and with others. God gave us the greatest example of giving when He gave the best gift ever in sending His only son to die for us so that we can have eternal life. I want to give my life to help serve others as a musician/pastor. I love giving out in summer camp and in the children's class that I help to lead. I have been volunteering with kids for the last five years giving out love, joy, and hope. When I lead music for my school assemblies and for youth group, people tell me how much my singing encourages them which is indescribable. Music helped me out of a dark place in my life as I was fighting cancer and depression and gave me a purpose. Sharing the songs I have written with others to help them is so rewarding. I learned that I can make a difference in other people's lives. After one meeting, a boy told me he was no longer going to commit suicide because I had given him hope. I will give my life in service to help others. Thank you so much.
    Bold Generosity Matters Scholarship
Generosity means giving back to others around you whether they deserve it or not. Generosity is very important to me because as a child cancer survivor, I have been given a second chance at life so I know it is a precious gift to share with others to make this world a better place. When you think you might die as a kid, you think about what really matters in life. When you get right down to it, the only thing that really matters at the end of our lives is our relationship with God and with others. God gave us the greatest example of generosity when He gave the best gift ever in sending His only son to die for us so that we can have eternal life. I want to give my life to help serve others as a musician/pastor. I love being generous in summer camp and in the children's class that I help to lead. I have been volunteering with kids for the last five years giving out love, joy, hope, and instruction in how they can be generous. This marked me for wanted me to be generous with my whole life helping others. Thank you for considering me for this scholarship.
    Deborah's Grace Scholarship
The first example of adversity that I have endured and overcome is as an acute promyelocytic leukemia child cancer survivor. I had developed a painful hematoma in my right leg. My blood ran out of me like water because of my low blood count. I was rushed by ambulance from one hospital to downtown Children's Mercy where I stayed for almost a month. I lost forty pounds. Then I had eight months of infusion treatments Monday through Friday in the afternoons so I could only go to school for half days and then take two other classes online to keep up with my school work. I am now almost three years cancer free in my five year follow up process because if it does not come back in five years, it does not come back. I have been given a second chance at life so I know it is a precious gift to share with others to make this world a better place so others can turn their lives around. I could have become negative, but I turned my story around to help others. There were so many positive aspects to focus on like the fact that my infusions were not chemotherapy but another type so I did not lose my hair or feel horrible after treatment . When you think you might die as a kid, you think about what really matters in life. When you get right down to it, the only thing that really matters at the end of our lives is our relationship with God and with others. It is a choice to turn your story around. My resilience from this cancer experience will help me in the future to face whatever adversity may come my way. Another example of overcoming adversity is my surviving being bullied for five years from third to seventh grade so bad that I wanted to end my life. I moved to a different school and was able to get help and overcome being bullied. Music helped me to overcome and be resilient as I was fighting cancer and depression from being bullied as it gave me a purpose. Leading school chapels and at my youth group is such a privilege. Others telling me how encouraged they are by my music is so rewarding. Sharing the songs I have written with others to help them through their trials is so indescribable. I learned that I can make a difference in other people's lives. After one meeting, a boy told me he was no longer going to commit suicide because I had given him hope. This was such a privilege to help this boy want to keep on living and find hope. This was a defining moment that helped me see that I wanted to help as many people as I can overcome adversity and be able to be resilient for the rest of their lives. Thank you for considering me for this scholarship. It would be life changing for me and for all those I am able to help overcome adversity and be resilient.

    Community Service is Key Scholarship
My favorite way to serve my community is through music. The main reason music is my favorite way to serve others is because of how it helped to bring me out of a very dark place in my life as I was fighting acute promyelocytic leukemia, a rare form of cancer, and depression from being bullied as a kid. Music gave me a purpose in making the world a better place as I had a second chance at life. Being a worship leader for Summit Christian Academy chapels for the last two years for a total of and Journey International youth group for the last 4 months for a total of around 40 hours helped me discover that music can really change the atmosphere. I realize that bringing others into a joyful place is the best feeling ever. Students and Teachers telling me how much my singing helps them is indescribable. Songwriting has also been a way for me to express my feelings and has brought a lot of positive change in me. Being able to share these songs with others to help them is so rewarding. My biggest experience serving my community is my volunteering helping kids at Forerunner church as a children's worker for the last five years years and as a lead teacher the last 2 years almost every week for a total of 1,250 hours and then being a lead counselor for eight different children's summer camps for Forerunner church and three One Thing conferences as a children's leader for a total of 348 hours. I have done mission trips with the ministry my family runs called Lions Den Ministries. We have done trips every year of my life ranging from one week to six months. I helped with reaching out to children through food outreaches, crafts, drama, music, playing and teaching the kids. These trips totaled over 500 hours. My most significant take away from these community services experiences is that I learned that I can make a difference in people's lives. After one of the meetings where I spoke on my being healed from cancer and how I overcame being bullied as a kid, boy came up to me and said he was going to commit suicide, but after hearing me, he changed his mind as he felt encouraged that he too could overcome his difficulties and get the help he needed. This moment marked me for wanting to spend the rest of my life serving my community by giving hope and bringing transformation to others by being a musician/worship/children's pastor. Thank you for considering me for this scholarship as it would truly be life changing for all those who I am able to help.

    Bold Listening Scholarship
I actively listen to others by looking them in the eyes with a kind, interested expression without looking around and without any other distractions like a cell phone. I have body language that leans forward. I give encouraging nods and expressions like: Wow! Interesting! Nice! I give them time to finish sharing what is on their heart. I do not interrupt them or turn the conversation to myself. When they are done talking or there seems to be a pause in the conversation, I ask them questions that connect back to what they were saying so that they know I actually was listening, and I do care about them and what concerns them. These questions also invite them to give more details as they can see that I am engaged with what they are communicating. Then after they have had more time to answer my questions, and if I had something that related to what they were talking about that I felt was positive and encouraging, I would at that moment share my story or experience to show how I can empathize and understand what they were talking about. Listening means taking an active role in engaging with others so that they feel seen, heard, known, and valued. Listening means investing time to help others have a resource outlet to express themselves in a safe environment. The world needs community which comes through unity. Unity is achieved by listening to one another to hear each other's perspectives and concerns. The world would be a better place if everyone took the time to listen to each other. From writing this essay, I am renewed in my resolve to be an even better listener when I am with others. Thank you for considering me for this scholarship. It would be life changing.

    Bold Perseverance Scholarship
Growing up, I was bullied over the course of eight years. It got to the point where I thought I would be better off not being around. Then my parents intervened, and I moved to a different school. As I was finding my way my freshman year, I was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia which is a genetic type of cancer. I was only able to go to school for half a day since my treatments were in the afternoon. I did two other classes online so as not to get behind. I went to the emergency room over 10 times during my healing journey. At one point, the doctors thought I was having a stroke, but thankfully I was not. If it was not for Jesus and my family, I would not have made it through this time. Music also helped me persevere through as I was fighting cancer and depression. It gave me a purpose in making the world a better place. Being a worship leader, playing guitar and leading in singing has helped me discover who I am and my biggest passion in life. I taught myself how to play guitar. Songwriting has been a way for me to express my feelings and has brought a lot of wholeness to me. Being able to share these songs to help others is so rewarding. I learned that I can make a difference in other people's lives by my positive passion. I have also noticed how music changes the atmosphere when I am working with children each week at my church. Music has brought healing to me, and I love sharing that healing with others so they can be uplifted to a higher place and leave their worries behind them. Perseverance is key for making it through life.
    Pandemic's Box Scholarship
The pandemic has affected my life in a positive way by inspiring me to learn how to play my guitar better. I have even written two songs. I am now a part of my school's music team that leads weekly assemblies in music. I am in charge of leading some sets also. I am also on the music team at my youth group. If it was not for the pandemic giving me more time to practice and focus on getting better vocally and on my guitar, I would not be the leader I am today. I had acute promyelocytic leukemia my freshman year of high school, and music really helped to get me through this difficult time. My aspirations include being a worship pastor along with being a pediatric nurse when I grow up. I would like to give back to other children who are going through similar difficulties as myself through nursing and through sharing music which transforms the atmosphere and changes people's outlook. Thank you for considering me for this scholarship. It would be life changing for me in helping me make a difference in people's lives. Though challenging in many ways, the pandemic changed my life positively.
    Better Food, Better World Scholarship
I am passionate about natural foods and the environment because I want to be the best version of myself and help others be the best versions of themselves. I was bullied as a kid for being big as I am now six foot five as a senior in high school. I also had acute promyelocytic leukemia cancer when I was fourteen from a genetic mutation in my body. I thankfully did not need chemotherapy as this is the only type of leukemia that does not use it. Instead they take a vitamin A infusion and another infusion and these change the bad cells back to good cells so there is no killing of anything just a transformation. This advancement changed my life, and I am now cancer free. I know that food and the environment affect many types of cancer, and even though mine was genetic, I know the importance that both of these factors play for a healthy life. I would like to help find ways to contribute by giving back in becoming a registered nurse to help encourage other children who are going through difficult times. My grandma was a rehab nurse before she retired, and she always believed in helping others become well again. My cousin is a naturopathic doctor who helps others through natural foods. Both of these family members have inspired me not just to deal with symptoms, but to get to the real root of the problem to bring complete healing. I am so thankful for the opportunities I have already have had to share my testimony not only to individuals, but also to several different groups. One student came up to me afterwards and said that I helped save his life as he was considering suicide before hearing me speak because of his bullying experiences. I was so overwhelmed at the redemption that came from my own difficulties to help someone else. I want to continue to helping others. In volunteering with children for the last seven years every week, I have learned the joy of sowing into others values that will change their lives. Seeing lives changed just by my taking the time to care for others is the most indescribable feeling. We can all change our environment every day by being responsible, making good choices and spreading joy by not just think of ourselves but those around us and ultimately future generations. Thank you for considering me for this scholarship. It would be life changing in helping me fulfill my dream in changing lives wherever I go.

Students and Teachers telling me how much my singing encourages them is indescribable. Songwriting has been a way for me to express my feelings and has brought a lot of wholeness to me. Being able to share these songs with others to help them is so rewarding. I learned that I can make a difference in other people's lives by my positive passion. Being in two different choirs, Concert Chorale and Jr./Sr. Ensemble has given me an opportunity to develop my voice. Being selected to be a part of the Metro Kansas City Honors Choir also was such an honor which enhanced my singing ability. My involvement in musical theater since I was eleven, also has helped with not only my voice development but the ability to be comfortable in front of others so I can be confident in speaking and singing. My favorite roles were the French chef in Little Mermaid, the Mad Hatter in Alice and Wonderland, and Gaston from Beauty and the Beast as they brought laughter to so many. I have volunteered working with little children for the last 7 years every week that I am home. I also noticed how music changes the atmosphere when helping little ones. Music has influenced my plans for the future as I would love to be a musician and worship pastor to impact others in their attitudes. Music has brought healing to me, and I love sharing that healing with others so they can be uplifted to a higher place and leave their worries behind them. I also am getting my registered nursing degree to help give back to kids in the amazing way that I was cared for during my cancer treatment. I know that I was created to be a leader in whatever sphere that I am in. I have been blessed to be a blessing to help others in whatever way I am able. Thank you for considering me for a scholarship as it would truly be life changing for me. I really appreciate this opportunity.
