Maverick Grill and Saloon Scholarship
Being a maverick means being an independent thinker who does things their own way, even when it goes against the norm. In this essay, I will discuss how Brazilian jiu-jitsu, archery, and being a foster child have contributed to shaping me into a maverick.
Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a martial art that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. It is a sport that requires strategy, patience, and persistence. Through practicing Brazilian jiu-jitsu, I have learned to think critically and creatively, and to approach challenges with a sense of adaptability. Jiu-jitsu is a sport where the ability to adapt to different situations is key. As a result, I have developed a strong sense of resilience and perseverance, which has helped me to overcome obstacles in other areas of my life.
Archery, on the other hand, is a sport that requires precision and focus. It is a solo sport that requires a great deal of patience and discipline. Through archery, I have learned to block out distractions and focus on the task at hand. This skill has allowed me to develop a strong sense of self-discipline and has helped me to stay focused on my goals.
Being a foster child has also shaped me into a maverick. Being placed in foster care means being separated from the traditional family structure. It can be a challenging experience, but it has taught me to be resilient and to rely on my own strength. As a foster child, I had to learn to adapt to new environments and to create my own sense of belonging. This experience has made me more independent and self-reliant.
Together, these experiences have contributed to shaping me into a maverick. I have learned to approach challenges with a sense of creativity, resilience, and adaptability. I am not afraid to think outside the box or to take risks, and I am always looking for new and innovative ways to approach problems. I believe that being a maverick is about being true to oneself and pursuing one's goals with passion and determination. It is about embracing the unknown, taking risks, and approaching life with an open mind, always ready to explore new ideas and possibilities.
The skills these 3 seemingly unrelated paths I have come across have given me grit. Grit is something I plan to take into my career in government and law, this is of course with the intent to better local communities. I grew up living below the poverty line and has provided me a work ethic that I hope to inspire not just my local community but communities across the country.
In conclusion, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, archery, and being a foster child have all played a role in shaping me into a maverick. Through these experiences, I have learned to be creative, resilient, and adaptable, and to approach challenges with a sense of determination and passion. I believe that being a maverick is not about being reckless or contrarian for its own sake, but rather about pursuing excellence and innovation in a way that is authentic and true to oneself.
