My desire to give back also extends beyond the bedside. One of my most meaningful community service experiences was helping organize a Salvation Army Angel Tree program through a medical clinic. We started with 60 tags and were able to provide Christmas gifts for 57 children. What affected me most was seeing how many children asked for necessities rather than toys. One child needed a bed and bedding, and we worked with others in the community to help meet that need. I personally adopted several tags and helped encourage additional participation through a raffle. That experience changed the way I think about service. Making a difference does not always require having unlimited money or resources. Sometimes it begins with recognizing a need, bringing people together, and refusing to assume that someone else will take care of it. It showed me how much can happen when a community decides to care for its own. I am inspired by people who use what they have achieved to create opportunities for others. That is what stands out to me about Sloane Stephens and the work of her foundation. Her success became a platform for helping young people access education, sports, mentorship, and safe spaces to grow. I hope to approach nursing with a similar mindset. My ultimate goal is to become a registered nurse and build a career in pediatric nursing. I am currently pursuing my Associate of Science in Nursing, but I do not view graduation as the finish line. It is one step in a detailed plan that includes completing my degree, passing the NCLEX-RN, gaining experience as a registered nurse, continuing my education, and eventually building a career caring for children and their families. My experience in healthcare has already helped me confirm that nursing is where I belong. I have worked in both a medical clinic and as a patient care technician in a hospital, which allowed me to see healthcare from different perspectives. Those experiences taught me that becoming a good nurse requires much more than passing classes. It requires communication, time management, clinical judgment, compassion, reliability, and the ability to keep learning. My immediate plan is to successfully complete each remaining semester of nursing school while protecting enough time for studying, clinical preparation, and hands-on learning. At the beginning of each semester, I organize major exams, assignments, clinical dates, and deadlines so I can work backward and create smaller weekly goals. In a way, my approach is similar to Joe Gilroy's motto: "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan." A large goal becomes much more achievable when I know exactly what needs to happen next. Finances are also part of my plan. My education budget prioritizes tuition and school fees first, followed by textbooks and online resources, uniforms and clinical supplies, transportation, licensing expenses, and an emergency cushion. When receiving scholarship funds, I would plan approximately 60% for tuition and academic fees, 20% for books and required nursing supplies, 10% for transportation to class and clinical sites, and 10% toward future graduation, NCLEX, and licensing expenses. I apply for scholarships, work when my school schedule allows, and carefully manage my expenses so that financial stress does not interfere with completing my education. After graduating, my next goal will be passing the NCLEX-RN. I plan to begin structured NCLEX preparation before graduation using practice questions, review resources, and targeted study of weaker areas rather than waiting until after school is finished. Once licensed, I will apply to pediatric nursing positions while remaining open to opportunities that provide strong foundational experience if my ideal position is not immediately available. My long-term plan also includes continuing my education toward a bachelor's degree while working as an RN. I understand that plans sometimes change. A difficult semester, unexpected expense, or competitive job market may require me to adjust my timeline, but not my goal. My backup plan is always to reassess what is not working, use available resources, seek guidance, and create a new route forward rather than abandoning the destination. For me, ambition is having a dream, but drive is turning that dream into a series of actions. This scholarship would provide another resource in my plan and allow me to continue working toward a career where my education can ultimately improve the lives of children and families. If you asked my younger self what made me stand out, I probably would have said, "I wish I didn't." I was born with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), a genetic condition that can cause café-au-lait spots, tumors along nerves, and a lifetime of medical appointments. Growing up, I was always aware that my body looked a little different than other kids'. Children are naturally curious, and while some simply asked questions, others stared or made comments that made me wish I could blend into the background. As I got older, the awkwardness wasn't just about looking different. It was explaining why I had so many doctor's appointments, why I occasionally had medical restrictions because of my epilepsy, or why I seemed to know more about hospitals than most people my age. At times, I wanted nothing more than to be "normal." Looking back, though, I realize that the very thing I tried to hide is what has shaped me into the person I am today. Living with a chronic condition taught me resilience long before I knew what the word meant. It taught me patience during countless appointments and tests. It taught me empathy because I know what it's like to be the patient who is nervous, overwhelmed, or scared. Most importantly, it taught me not to judge someone based on what you can—or can't—see. Today, I don't view NF1 as the thing that makes me awkward. I see it as the thing that gave me perspective. It is one of the reasons I chose to pursue nursing. I want to be the healthcare professional who understands that every patient has a story beyond their diagnosis. Sometimes the most meaningful part of caring for someone is simply listening and making them feel seen. Ironically, what once made me self-conscious is now something I talk about openly. I've learned that people usually aren't looking for perfection—they're looking for authenticity. Sharing my experiences has allowed me to connect with classmates, coworkers, patients, and friends who have faced challenges of their own. It reminds them that they aren't alone, and it reminds me how far I've come. If I had the chance to tell my younger self one thing, it would be this: the qualities that make you feel different today may become your greatest strengths tomorrow. My "awkward" thing isn't that I have NF1 or epilepsy. It's that my life has never followed the typical path. And honestly, I'm grateful for that. Those experiences have made me more compassionate, more determined, and more appreciative of every opportunity I have to make a difference. Standing out isn't something I try to avoid anymore—it's something I hope to use to help others feel accepted, understood, and cared for.

Community is built through ordinary people choosing to help others during extraordinary moments. Throughout my life, I have learned that making a difference does not always require grand gestures. Sometimes, the greatest impact comes from recognizing a need and taking action. Whether through volunteer work, healthcare, or simply showing compassion, I have always looked for opportunities to serve those around me. One of the most meaningful ways I have contributed to my community was organizing my workplace's Salvation Army Angel Tree. What began as a simple holiday initiative grew into an opportunity to support dozens of local families. We displayed sixty Angel Tree tags throughout our clinic, and by the end of the campaign, fifty-seven children had been adopted. Many of the requests were not for toys but for basic necessities such as clothing, shoes, hygiene items, bedding, and food. Seeing those requests was a powerful reminder that many families struggle to meet their children's most basic needs. When one child requested a bed, I reached out to a community partner to help provide not only the bed but also new sheets and other essentials. My coworkers and I also personally adopted several children and organized a raffle that encouraged even more participation. Watching our clinic come together to brighten the holidays for so many children reinforced my belief that one person's initiative can inspire an entire community to give. Outside of holiday service, I have participated in local food drives to help families experiencing food insecurity. While these efforts may seem small individually, they represent something much larger: a commitment to ensuring that members of my community know they are not alone during difficult times. Service is also a part of my everyday life. As a Patient Care Technician while attending nursing school, I have the privilege of caring for patients during some of their most vulnerable moments. Providing comfort, listening to concerns, and treating every patient with dignity have shown me that healthcare is about much more than medical treatment. Compassion can be just as healing as any medication or procedure. These experiences have shaped my long-term goal of becoming a pediatric nurse. Before I was born, my grandfather died by suicide after years of struggling with substance abuse. While I never had the chance to know him, his absence has always been part of my family's story. His death left lasting pain that continues to affect those who loved him. Years later, my older sister experienced the devastating loss of her first child. The grief became so overwhelming that she attempted to take her own life. Thankfully, she survived, but it opened my eyes to how deeply emotional pain can affect someone and how important timely support and treatment truly are. Growing up, I also learned that conversations about mental health are often avoided. People may fear being judged, believe they should simply "be strong," or feel ashamed to ask for help. Watching people I love struggle made me realize that mental illness is no different than a physical illness. Just as someone with a broken bone deserves treatment, someone experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma, or overwhelming grief deserves compassion, understanding, and access to care. My own health journey has strengthened that perspective. Living with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 and epilepsy has meant facing uncertainty, medical appointments, and the emotional weight that can come with chronic health conditions. Those experiences have shown me that health is about much more than physical symptoms. Emotional well-being plays a significant role in healing, resilience, and quality of life. Because of this, I have developed a deeper appreciation for healthcare providers who treat the whole person rather than only their diagnosis. What sets me apart is the unique combination of experiences that have shaped my character, strengthened my resilience, and inspired my commitment to helping others through a career in nursing. One advantage I bring is my perspective as both a future healthcare professional and a lifelong patient. I have lived with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) and epilepsy for most of my life, requiring ongoing medical care, specialist appointments, testing, and monitoring. More recently, I have undergone evaluations related to an optic nerve tumor. These experiences have given me firsthand insight into the healthcare system and taught me what it feels like to face uncertainty, fear, and vulnerability as a patient. While many nursing students learn empathy through education and clinical experience, I have experienced healthcare from both sides. This perspective allows me to better understand the emotional challenges patients and families face and motivates me to provide compassionate, patient-centered care. Through the generosity of coworkers and community members, dozens of children received gifts and necessities that they otherwise may not have had. Many of the requests were not for toys but for basic needs such as clothing, bedding, hygiene items, and food. This experience reinforced my belief that faith is demonstrated through action and that small acts of service can have a meaningful impact on the lives of others. Technology can be a wonderful thing and can connect the world. The Telegraph was invented in 1816 and is what inspired the modern-day telephone. This piece of technology has done wonderful things for society. It was and still is life-changing because of this invention we are able to connect with anyone we want to. This can help us save lives and just keep the world connected on what is happening. In late 2019 and early 2020, China was hit by Covid-19. Within hours of this happening the news of this was global. This disease spread fast and because the world was able to be connected we were able to slow down covid and find ways to treat it. Many people were forced into lockdown away from their families but because of technology, we were able to stay connected. At some points, it was almost like nothing was happening and we were normal. Technology like this has inspired me and many others. The way it brought people together was truly amazing.
