Pediatric care is incredibly important in the framework of our current healthcare system. Designing and implementing appropriate interventions and screening tools are crucial towards ensuring that our children will grow into healthy, successful, and contributing members of society. Encompassing the mind and body within one’s philosophy of care is necessary, as this view is an important step in leading children down the right track towards healthy development. My personal philosophy of nursing lies within the idea that nurses are leaders, educators, and trusted members of the community and are pivotal in leading others on a path of wellness and safety. With recent hardships brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring that children can successfully reach their goals and become robust members of our community has never been more crucial. Striving to achieve this goal is the reason why I am passionate and excited about becoming a pediatric primary care nurse practitioner. The children of today are facing an incredible number of hardships, obstacles, and barriers to their physical and mental wellbeing, and I believe that I am up for the challenge to ensure that they can achieve their goals. Throughout my nursing career, I have been dedicated to caring for pediatric patients. The experiences I have obtained range significantly, from helping to safely deliver newborns into the world, to caring for children presenting to a Level 1 trauma-designated pediatric ER, to identifying and enrolling patients into pediatric emergency care research studies. My love for caring for these particular patients in so many different realms has given me a unique and humbling perspective of the care that these patients so desperately need and deserve. Children need family-centered care, health promotion, primary prevention, as well as continued assessment, implementation, and evaluation of standards of care in order to thrive— and I look forward to guiding these patients and their families towards health and wellness. As previously mentioned, today’s children have been burdened with the stress, anxiety, and challenges that have come from the COVID-19 pandemic. As a pediatric primary care provider, I plan to help these children through troubling times and periods of uncertainty and despair. Mental health is an important factor in the overall care of patients, and as a future career goal, I will work to pull children’s mental health needs to the forefront and made a priority in the holistic care of these vulnerable patients. A specific area of interest I have for pediatric primary care patients involves the implementation of a stress management tool for school-aged children. This tool would be easily accessible, available at any time, and would provide school-aged children with stress-reducing techniques and mantras to help alleviate the overwhelming feelings they may be experiencing. Adapting a tool for children to use daily for stress relief would be beneficial to their health, wellness, and overall sense of self. In the age of social media, and most recently, the uncertainty and frightening state amid a global pandemic, children need mental health resources more now than ever before.

Family-centered care is essential to the health and development of children and remains a core pillar in my everyday practice. Recognizing the importance of a family’s impact upon the development of a child is vital, as some of the most notable issues I have seen during my time as a bedside pediatric nurse have been related to faults in the primary prevention piece of care for pediatric patients. My nursing experience is vast, as I have functioned as a pediatric emergency, labor and delivery, and research nurse in a multitude of settings. An issue that I witnessed time and time again involved children presenting to the emergency department with injuries and ailments considered easily preventable in the home setting. The reason why I have chosen to continue my education to become a pediatric nurse practitioner is to bridge the knowledge gap many families may face to ensure the health and safety of their children. General health, wellbeing, and preventative care starts in the home, and I am fully prepared to become a pivotal member of patients’ and families’ lives in the form of a pediatric primary care provider. I have faced many obstacles along the way in furthering my education. The main challenge I have faced includes the burden of stress and anxiety that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic. The constant worry of falling ill, bringing contagious illnesses home to my newborn, and stressful thoughts of having to call off work or miss class due to illness are all examples of issues that have stemmed from the pandemic. These challenges have taken a toll on my mental health, as I feel the pressure of continuing to forge on in my schooling while attempting to stay well and free from illness in a setting that focuses on assessing, diagnosing, treating, managing, and caring for those feeling unwell. Despite these things, my passion for pediatric primary care and the drive I have for pursuing a graduate degree remains strong. Therefore, in order to manage my role as both a student and a mother, I rely heavily on a "village" made up of my caring husband, in-laws, and mother and father. To balance all of these things at once, it is crucial to have a solid support system at home. I feel very lucky to have a wonderful team of loving family members standing beside me in my motherhood/student journey. All of these experiences, from balancing life as both a mother and student and navigating a post-pandemic world, have only strengthened my drive to become a pediatric primary care provider. I want to help my future patients through troubling times and periods of uncertainty and despair while also helping to keep them as healthy as possible.

    Online Learning Innovator Scholarship
Graduate school is extremely challenging, especially when combined with working as a teaching assistant at a school of nursing and a bedside nurse at a children's hospital like I am. An online platform that has been immensely helpful in managing my time and stress is the Mindspace mindfulness application. This app helps me to decompress after a busy day of working, schooling, and clinicals as well as preps me for the next day or week to come. This app has been so helpful in my daily life that I have recommended it to my adolecent patients during my Pediatric Primary Care DNP clinical rotations. Today’s children have been burdened with the stress, anxiety, and challenges that have come from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Mindspace app is a great option for stressed adolescent patients. However, there is a gap in resources for children of younger ages. Because of this, a specific area of interest I have for pediatric primary care patients involves the implementation of a stress management tool for school-aged children. The stress management tool would be easily accessible, available at any time, and would provide school-aged children with stress-reducing techniques and mantras to help alleviate the overwhelming feelings they may be experiencing. I have a plethora of knowledge about pediatric patients in the acute setting, and I am eager to expand my knowledge and skillset in regards pediatric primary care while incorporating aspects of online learning to these tech-savvy patients. I would be ecstatic for the opportunity to receive this scholarship to be able to advance my professional and academic career.

The experiences I have obtained range significantly, from helping to safely deliver newborns into the world to caring for children presenting to a Level 1 trauma-designated pediatric ER. Family-centered care is essential to the health and development of children and remains a core pillar in my everyday practice. As a pediatric primary care nurse practitioner, I would expand upon this ideal by putting my families at the forefront— working cohesively with them in order to provide exceptional care to their children. Some of the most notable issues I have seen during my time as a bedside pediatric RN have been related to faults in the primary prevention piece of care for pediatric patients. Time and time again, children present to the ER with injuries and ailments considered easily preventable in the home setting. I am determined to work with patients and families to educate them on primary prevention, thereby bridging the knowledge gap that they may face to ensure the health and safety of children. General health, wellbeing, and preventative care starts in the home, and I am fully prepared to become a pivotal member of patients’ and families’ lives in the form of a pediatric primary care provider. The opportunity to receive the Morgan Levine Dolan Community Service Scholarship is something that I feel very excited and passionate about. My true nursing passion lies within the pediatric population, and it is my goal to help children learn, grow, and develop into the absolute best versions of themselves. I have a plethora of knowledge about pediatric patients in the acute setting, and I am eager to expand my knowledge and skillset in regards pediatric primary care.

Today’s children have been burdened with the stress, anxiety, and challenges that have come from the COVID-19 pandemic. From my experiences working in pediatric emergency settings, the mental health needs of children are inadequately addressed. In my particular line of work and setting, there is a clear lack of mental health support, services, and resources for an ever-growing population of patients. As a pediatric primary care provider, I plan to help these children through troubling times and periods of uncertainty and despair. Mental health is an important factor in the overall care of patients, and as a future career goal, I will work to pull children’s mental health needs to the forefront and made a priority in their holistic care. A specific area of interest I have for pediatric primary care patients involves the implementation of a stress management tool for school-aged children. The stress management tool would be easily accessible, available at any time, and would provide school-aged children with stress-reducing techniques and mantras to help alleviate the overwhelming feelings they may be experiencing. Adapting a tool for children to use daily for stress relief would be beneficial to their health, wellness, and overall sense of self. In the age of social media, and most recently, the uncertainty and frightening state amid a global pandemic, children need mental health resources more now than ever before.
