In December of 2018, my life was forever altered. After nearly 24 years with my college sweetheart, I found myself unexpectedly facing the end of my marriage. The news came not through a conversation, but in the form of a “Dear John” letter typed on his iPhone. The shock, grief, and trauma in that moment were immense. Yet, it also became the beginning of a powerful journey toward healing and self-discovery.
In the wake of this life-altering event, I knew that I had to rebuild—not only for myself, but for my young child. One of the first steps I took was to seek counseling for my six-year-old, understanding that mental health support was critical during such a profound life transition. At the same time, I also turned to therapy for myself. I was uncertain of what the future held, but I knew that if I wanted to heal, I had to prioritize my emotional well-being and embark on a path toward inner peace and happiness.
While therapy played a central role in my recovery, I also found strength through self-care practices: reading, spending time in nature, exercising, meditating, and listening to podcasts on personal growth. These practices, combined with the support of my therapist and close loved ones, began to guide me in reimagining my life—especially my career. After years of working part-time to focus on raising my child, I realized it was time to reconnect with my professional aspirations. Despite holding both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Michigan State University, I had set my own career aside to support my husband's professional journey. Now, as a single mother, I was determined to forge a new path.
During this period of reflection and growth, I came to a powerful realization: I wanted to give back in the same way I had been supported. The compassion and guidance I received during my healing process inspired me to pursue a career in counseling. Despite the challenges of returning to academia after being away for nearly 20 years, I knew this was the right path for me, and I took the leap.
The trauma of midlife has taught me many invaluable lessons. It has underscored the importance of both emotional and financial independence, especially as a single mother. It has shown me the power of surrounding myself with a supportive network, including friends, family, and my pets, who became my chosen family. It has deepened my resilience, strengthened my courage, and deepened my belief in the transformative power of counseling. Through it all, I’ve learned that mental health is just as essential as physical health and that healing is a lifelong process that should never be taken for granted.
As I enter the third year of my counseling program at Central Michigan University, my passion for this work has only grown. My life now centers around my son, my pets, and my love for helping others. I’ve rediscovered joy in the small moments, and I’ve even found love again. The words my late father spoke to me still resonate deeply: “Get your education. No one can take it away from you.” I carry these words with me as I continue to pursue my dream of becoming a counselor.
This scholarship would be incredibly helpful in supporting my continued education. As a single mother, the financial burden of graduate school is significant, and any assistance would allow me to focus more fully on my studies and clinical work. The funds would help me manage the costs of tuition, textbooks, and other essentials, ensuring that I can dedicate myself fully to becoming the counselor I aspire to be.
Looking ahead, I plan to integrate a holistic approach to counseling that addresses the mind, body, soul, and spirit. I believe that healing is most effective when all aspects of a person’s being are nurtured and supported. By incorporating techniques that focus on mindfulness, self-care, and emotional regulation, along with traditional therapeutic practices, I aim to help my clients achieve balance and peace in their lives. Whether through talk therapy, mindfulness practices, or encouraging physical activity and self-compassion, I hope to empower individuals to heal from within.
Ultimately, my goal is to help others navigate life’s challenges—whether they are coping with heartbreak, mental health struggles, or moments of deep uncertainty. I want to be the kind of counselor who provides not only guidance but also hope. Just as others have helped me rise from the ashes of my struggles, I aim to inspire those I work with to do the same.
