Aspiring Marine Biologist and Animal Lover
Limbre A. Lawrence 11th grade Jacksonville, Florida
I’m a passionate 16-year-old with a heart full of love for animals and a deep connection to the ocean. Whether exploring tide pools, playing volleyball on the sandy shores, or creating art inspired by marine life, I find joy in every moment. You’ll likely find me on the volleyball court when I'm not studying or volunteering. The teamwork, strategy, and adrenaline rush during a game fuel my competitiveness. Art is my sanctuary. I express my emotions through brushstrokes and colors, often capturing the beauty of marine ecosystems. From seashells to majestic whales, my canvas tells stories of the sea. The beach is my happy place. I collect seashells, watch sunsets, and listen to the rhythmic waves. It’s where I feel most connected to nature and its wonders. Sundays are reserved for church, where I find solace and community. My faith inspires me to care for all living beings, whether they have fur, fins, or feathers. My dream is to become a marine biologist and dive into the mysteries of the deep blue. I want to protect aquatic ecosystems, study fascinating creatures, and contribute to conservation efforts. As I continue my high school studies, I’m excited to delve into AP Biology, ecology, and oceanography. My goal is to go to college and major in Biology with a concentration on Marine Biology and Veterinary Studies. My goal is to combine my love for animals with scientific knowledge to make a difference.

Since I was in the fourth grade, I’ve had a deep love and fascination for animals. Whether it was in my backyard or watching documentaries about marine life on Netflix, I knew early on that I wanted a career that allowed me to connect with animals and contribute to their well-being. My dream is to become both a marine biologist and a veterinarian. I am driven by the belief that every animal, from the smallest insect to the largest whale, plays a crucial role in the balance of nature, and I want to dedicate my life to understanding and protecting them. Additionally, I hope to help make the world a better place for all people by advocating for environmental sustainability and the conservation of endangered species.
One of my biggest passions is working toward the preservation of marine life. Oceans are not only home to a vast array of species, but they also play a critical role in the Earth’s ecosystem, providing oxygen, regulating climate, and supporting biodiversity. I also have a profound interest in animals on land, particularly in understanding their health and helping those in need. By becoming a veterinarian, I hope to provide medical care to animals, especially those in underprivileged areas or wildlife rescues, where access to care is often limited. The combination of marine biology and veterinary medicine would allow me to contribute in both terrestrial and aquatic settings, which is a powerful way to make a positive impact on the world.
However, as passionate as I am about these fields, I know the road to achieving my dreams will come with challenges. One significant obstacle I anticipate is my struggle with dyslexia. Throughout my life, I have faced difficulties with reading, writing, and math, which are all crucial skills for succeeding in college and my chosen career path. Dyslexia means that I need extra time and support to process information, and sometimes it’s harder for me to retain details. One of the most important things I’ve learned is that the right teacher can make all the difference. My experiences have shown that when educators take the time to understand my learning style and provide the tools and accommodations I need, I can thrive. In college, I plan to advocate for myself, ensuring that I get the support I need, whether through tutoring, extended test time, or other accommodations.
Another obstacle I face is the financial burden of paying for college. Being raised by a single parent means that financial resources are often limited, and I know I will need to secure scholarships to help cover tuition and other expenses. My mom has always taught me the value of hard work and perseverance, and I am determined to do everything I can to ease the financial strain on our family while pursuing my education. I also plan to explore opportunities for internships and research assistant positions, which will not only help with funding but also allow me to gain hands-on experience in my field.
Despite these challenges, I remain committed to my goal of becoming both a marine biologist and a veterinarian. I am passionate about making the world a better place for all living creatures, and I know that the obstacles I face will only make me stronger and more determined. With faith, hard work, and a strong support system, I am confident that I can overcome any hurdles that come my way and make a meaningful contribution to the world.

Throughout my life, I’ve faced numerous challenges, particularly with subjects like reading, math, and most recently, probability and statistics. As a senior, I was determined to excel in all my classes, but my struggles with math continued to haunt me. After receiving an F on my first nine-week report card in my probability and statistics class, I felt overwhelmed and discouraged. The concepts just didn’t make sense, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t seem to grasp the material. I doubted my abilities and feared that I was destined to fail the class.
But during this difficult time, I turned to my faith for guidance and strength. My mother and I prayed together, asking God to help me through this struggle. We prayed specifically that I would get the support I needed to improve in the class and that my teacher situation would change, as I felt I wasn’t receiving the help I needed to succeed. My mother and I knew that with God’s intervention, things could improve, even if the situation seemed impossible.
As a result of our prayers, my schedule was changed, and I was placed in a new class with a teacher who had been tutoring me on the side. This teacher had already been a source of encouragement, offering me guided notes, breaking down difficult concepts, and taking the time to explain things in a way that I could understand. When I found out I would be in his class full-time, I was filled with relief and hope. It felt like God had answered our prayers.
With the new support system in place, I began attending tutoring sessions regularly, working through the material with my teacher’s help. I was finally able to understand the complex concepts that had once seemed like an insurmountable barrier. My confidence grew as I saw my grades improve, and as of now, I have an A in the class. Though the semester isn’t over yet, I am keeping the faith that I will continue to do well and will finish with either an A or a B.
This experience was a powerful reminder of how faith can move mountains. I had faced what seemed like an impossible challenge, but by trusting in God and taking action, things began to fall into place. I learned that with faith, perseverance, and the right support, even the most difficult obstacles can be overcome. Looking back, I know that God’s hand was at work in changing my teacher and providing me with the resources I needed to succeed.
Now, I face challenges with a renewed sense of faith, knowing that I can rely on both my efforts and God’s help to guide me through whatever comes my way.

Cancer has had a profound impact on my life, shaping my perspective and instilling in me a sense of resilience and awareness. I was only seven years old when my grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer. At that age, I didn’t fully understand what was happening until my mother brought her home from the hospital. My grandmother stayed with us for six months during her treatment, and it was during this time that I began to grasp the gravity of her illness.
One day, my grandmother shared with me that her breast had been removed. I had accidentally seen her surgical scar, and she explained it to me gently. I noticed that I couldn’t hug her as tightly as before because it would cause her pain. This realization scared me. I watched her lose her hair and cry, and although I didn’t fully comprehend her fear at the time, I could sense her vulnerability. Her struggle made me anxious, especially whenever she had to go to the doctor for check-ups. The word “cancer” became a source of fear for me, a reminder of the pain and uncertainty it brought into our lives.
My mother, a single parent, bore the brunt of caring for my grandmother without any help. She never cried in front of me, but I could feel her emotional strain. Her strength and determination to support my grandmother were both inspiring and heart-wrenching. Despite the challenges, my grandmother survived, but the fear of cancer never entirely left me. Every mention of the disease brings back memories of that difficult time.
Recently, cancer touched my life again when my teammate was diagnosed with bone cancer. One day she was fine, and after graduating from high school in 2024, she received the diagnosis, the Big C word. This sudden turn of events was incredibly scary and reinforced my resolve to take better care of myself and be more aware of health issues.
These experiences have motivated me to seek knowledge on how I can make a difference. I want to be proactive in my health and help others who might be going through similar struggles. Cancer has taught me the importance of resilience, empathy, and the need for support systems. It has also driven me to consider how I can contribute to the fight against this disease, whether through raising awareness, supporting research, or simply being there for those who need it.
In conclusion, cancer has left an indelible mark on my life. It has shaped my outlook, instilled a sense of urgency in taking care of my health, and inspired me to make a positive impact in my community. While the fear of cancer remains, it also fuels my determination to live a life of purpose and compassion.
Lindsey Vonn ‘GREAT Starts With GRIT’ Scholarship
Throughout my life, I have faced numerous obstacles and challenges that have required me to develop a gritty mindset. Living with dyslexia, eczema, and asthma has taught me resilience and determination. Despite these conditions, I have learned to manage them effectively and not let them hinder my academic and personal growth.
I was only seven years old when my grandmother was diagnosed with cancer. She stayed with us for six months during her treatment. Watching her battle the disease was incredibly tough, but her courage and determination were a profound source of inspiration for me. Her strength taught me the importance of staying positive and fighting through adversity, no matter how difficult the circumstances.
Growing up with eczema meant frequent visits to the doctor, which was often embarrassing for me. My skin condition made me self-conscious, but over time, I learned to embrace it as part of who I am. This experience has helped me develop a thicker skin, both literally and figuratively, and has taught me to focus on my strengths rather than my insecurities.
Asthma presented another challenge, especially when I decided to pursue volleyball. I was unsure if I would be picked for the team due to my condition. However, my hard work and determination paid off, and I not only made the team but also became a starting player. Volleyball has become a significant part of my life, providing me with a sense of belonging and joy. The high-energy game has improved my physical health and mental well-being, helping me stay focused in school and avoid unhealthy lifestyle choices.
Being raised by a single mother has also shaped my character. My mother has been my rock, providing unwavering support and encouragement. Her strength and dedication have inspired me to persevere through difficult times and strive for excellence in everything I do. Despite the challenges we faced, she always made sure I felt included, loved, and confident.
These experiences have instilled in me a gritty mindset. I have learned to face challenges head-on, remain persistent, and never give up, no matter how tough the situation may be. This mindset has not only helped me overcome personal obstacles but has also driven me to succeed in my academic and extracurricular pursuits.
As an African American female, I am aware of the challenges I face due to the color of my skin. I aspire to be an ideal student, not just an ideal Black student. I want to be someone great; I want to give back to my community and share my experiences with others. My dream is to become a veterinarian and own my clinic, where I can help all animals. This aspiration is deeply rooted in my love for animals and my desire to make a positive impact on their lives.
From a young age, I have been passionate about animal welfare. I have always been fascinated by the bond between humans and animals and the joy they bring into our lives. By becoming a veterinarian, I aim to ensure that animals receive the best care possible, whether they are pets, strays, or wildlife in need of medical attention.
Sharing is caring and I want to inspire young people, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, to pursue their dreams and believe in their potential. By achieving my goals, I hope to demonstrate that with hard work, determination, and a gritty mindset, anything is possible with God.
Receiving this scholarship would greatly help me and my mom financially and I can say I did it.

I was able to share my food allergies and dyslexia with them, and both my teammates and coaches have been understanding and supportive.

My character is that of empathy and simplicity. When you practice empathy, you actively listen to others, seek to understand their feelings and put yourself in their shoes. By doing so, you create a safe space for people to express themselves without judgment. Simplicity reminds me to appreciate life’s fundamental aspects, the beauty of a sunrise, my mother’s spaghetti, playing volleyball, and having a heartfelt conversation with my family and friends. By embracing simplicity, you inspire gratitude and mindfulness. This mindfulness leads to more deliberate choices, whether it’s the items we purchase, the tasks we take on, the things we eat, or the relationships we nurture. When we consume and commit with intention, we avoid the overwhelming that comes from excess and appreciate more of what we do have. When you embody empathy and simplicity, you create a ripple effect inspiring those around you to embrace these qualities and make the world a kinder, more straightforward place to be in your life.
