The movie My Sister’s Keeper had a profound impact on me because it made me see illness, family, and love in a completely different way. It tells the story of Anna, a young girl who was conceived to help save her sister Kate, who is battling leukemia. Throughout the film, I was struck by the emotional weight of the decisions the family had to make—the endless hospital visits, the uncertainty of each day, and the way love drives people to make unimaginable sacrifices. Watching this movie was deeply personal for me because I grew up with my mom facing serious health challenges. There were many times during the film when I felt like I was watching parts of my own life unfold on screen—the exhaustion, the constant prayers for good news, and the way illness affects everyone in the family, not just the person who is sick. It reminded me of moments when I wished I could take away my mom’s pain and trade places with her just so she could have relief. The movie made me reflect on how strong my mom has been through everything, and how those experiences shaped who I am today. One of the most powerful parts of the film for me was seeing the compassion of the nurses and doctors who supported the family. They weren’t just there to administer medicine or perform procedures—they were there to comfort, guide, and hold space for the family during their hardest moments. It showed me that nursing is so much more than treating symptoms; it’s about caring for the whole person and being a source of hope when everything feels uncertain. That lesson is one of the biggest reasons I feel called to pursue a career in nursing. I want to be the kind of nurse who notices the small things—the fear in someone’s eyes, the worry on a parent’s face, the quiet moments where they need comfort more than words. Watching My Sister’s Keeper helped me realize how much of an impact a nurse can have, not just on the patient, but on the entire family walking through difficult times. The movie also taught me about strength, compassion, and sacrifice. It reminded me that even in the hardest circumstances, love can carry people forward. It deepened my desire to specialize in hospice care, where I can help families navigate some of life’s most painful transitions while offering dignity, understanding, and support. My Sister’s Keeper didn’t just move me emotionally—it changed my perspective on life and solidified my calling to help others. It reminded me why I want to dedicate my future to caring for people in their most vulnerable moments, bringing them comfort, hope, and compassion when they need it most.

Growing up, I faced challenges that shaped who I am today and inspired me to work harder for my future. My mom battled serious health issues for much of my childhood, and watching her fight through pain and endless treatments taught me the true meaning of strength and perseverance. There were times when it felt overwhelming, but instead of letting those hardships hold me back, I used them as motivation to push forward and create a better future for myself. Through these experiences, I discovered my passion for helping others and found my calling in nursing. I’ve seen firsthand the difference compassionate care can make, and I want to be that source of comfort for patients and families facing their own difficult moments. My goal is to become a registered nurse, specializing in hospice care, where I can provide dignity and compassion to those who need it most. Gaining a higher education will allow me to turn my passion into a reality. Through advanced training and hands-on experience, I’ll develop the knowledge and skills necessary to provide the best possible care for my patients. Education is the key that opens the door to my dreams, giving me the tools to make a real difference in people’s lives. I’m committed to working hard, staying focused, and never giving up on the goals I’ve set for myself. This scholarship would bring me one step closer to making those dreams come true.

Essay 1: Lily’s Inspiration for Pursuing Nursing Growing up, my passion for helping others was shaped by my own family’s journey. My mom battled serious health challenges when I was young, and I spent much of my childhood watching her fight through pain, procedures, and hospital visits. Seeing the impact her illness had on our family was incredibly hard, but it also opened my eyes to the power of compassionate care. The moments that stand out most are the ones when nurses went beyond their duties. They didn’t just care for my mom’s symptoms—they cared for her spirit. Their patience, their gentle words, and the way they comforted her made a lasting impression on me. I realized that nursing isn’t just a profession; it’s a calling to serve, support, and walk alongside people during some of their most vulnerable moments. This experience inspired me to pursue a future in nursing, particularly in hospice care. I want to provide the same comfort and dignity to others that those nurses gave my mom. My involvement in color guard, medical classes, and National Honor Society has strengthened my work ethic and leadership skills, preparing me for the demands of this career. I see nursing as more than a job—it’s an opportunity to be the calm in someone else’s storm. I want to offer hope, understanding, and healing to patients and families who need it most. My mom’s journey taught me the value of empathy, and I carry that lesson with me every day as I prepare to step into this profession. Essay 2: What Human Touch Means to Me To me, human touch represents compassion, connection, and understanding—something I first learned from my own life experiences. Growing up with a sick mom, I saw firsthand how powerful a simple touch could be. There were days when my mom was exhausted from pain or treatments, and words weren’t enough. But when a nurse held her hand, brushed her hair back, or gently adjusted her blanket, it meant everything. It told her, “You’re not alone. I’m here with you.” That experience shaped the way I view care. I learned that true healing goes beyond medicine; it comes from empathy. Human touch can comfort fears, ease loneliness, and create trust between a patient and their caregiver. Watching the nurses who supported my mom taught me that one person can make an incredible difference—not just by treating symptoms but by treating the whole person. This is what inspires me as I work toward becoming a nurse. I want to be the kind of caregiver who doesn’t just see a diagnosis, but sees a person—their story, their fears, and their hopes. I want my patients to feel safe, valued, and understood, even in their hardest moments. Human touch is also about responsibility. When someone is vulnerable enough to put their trust in you, it’s a gift you must honor. In nursing, every hand you hold carries a piece of someone’s life. That’s a privilege I’ll never take lightly. For me, human touch is more than physical—it’s a promise of compassion, dignity, and respect. It reminds us that, even in pain, there is still kindness and hope. As a future nurse, I want to give my patients the same comfort that helped my mom and my family through some of our toughest times.
