Bio

I am a motivated student with a strong passion for healthcare and athletics. I plan to pursue a degree in nursing, where I hope to develop the knowledge and skills needed to care for others and make a meaningful impact in my community. My interest in nursing comes from a deep desire to help people during some of the most important and challenging moments of their lives. Alongside my academic goals, I am committed to continuing my athletic career by playing Division III collegiate softball. Being a student-athlete has taught me valuable lessons in discipline, teamwork, time management, and perseverance. Balancing athletics and academics has helped shape my work ethic and determination to succeed both on the field and in the classroom. In the future, I hope to use my nursing education to provide compassionate care while continuing to grow as a leader and role model. Receiving this scholarship would help support my academic journey and allow me to focus on achieving my goals of becoming a nurse while continuing to compete as a collegiate athlete.

Last week, my Aunt Karen passed away after many years of struggling with mental health challenges and alcoholism. Her passing has been very difficult for my family, and it has made me reflect deeply on how addiction and mental health issues can affect not only the person experiencing them but also the people who love them. Even though I was young when she started her struggles, my parents shielded me and my siblings from knowing what was going on. When I got older, I knew something was not right with her. I realize now the stress that it had on my family. How can you be supportive but not enabling at the same time? Growing up, I saw how hard life could be for my aunt. She was a caring person, but her struggles with her mental health and alcohol addiction often made everyday life challenging. There were times when our family felt worried, sad, and unsure how to help her. Watching someone you care about face those kinds of struggles can be painful because you want them to get better, but you also realize that recovery is not simple and often requires professional support and long-term care. Her situation showed me how closely mental health and addiction can be connected. It also helped me understand that people battling these issues need compassion, patience, and access to proper treatment. Unfortunately, not everyone gets the support they need in time, and that reality has had a lasting impact on me. Our system fails people like Aunt Karen. She was in and out of rehabs, nothing was long term. She lost her job and healthcare. She could not hold a job for a long period of time. She tried her hardest to stay on the right path. It was so hard to ever get ahead. My aunt’s life and passing have motivated me to pursue a college major in healthcare or rehabilitation. I want to learn more about mental health treatment, addiction recovery, and the ways healthcare professionals can support people during some of the hardest moments of their lives. My goal is to work in a field where I can help individuals who are struggling with substance abuse or mental health conditions and provide them with the support and resources they need to recover. I hope that by pursuing this path, I can help others find the help that my aunt struggled to receive. Her memory motivates me to become someone who can make a positive difference in people’s lives, especially for those battling addiction and mental health challenges. Through education and compassion, I hope to support individuals and families who are going through similar experiences.
