When I was thirteen years old I came home from school to find my grandfather, my soul provider, my safe space having a heart attack in his bed. I called 911, however I was not well versed in CPR. That day I lost my safe space. After some healing and trying to navigate life at thirteen I decided my new mission was not only to learn CPR but to teach children in a fun and less scary way. I was able to partner with a CPR school and get my instructor license. After this I volunteered at several elementary schools in my area to fun and innovative CPR lessons. I am hoping to take away the scariness of the situation and implement a very necessary skill to children. While volunteering I realized how much I loved working with children and teaching them the skills that I wish I had learned years earlier. As a freshman in high school I started attending a vocational school where nursing was an option. I took that opportunity and never looked back. I have worked in nursing homes, hospitals, and children's hospitals. I came to realize that working with children is my passion. I aspire to be a nurse, a patient advocate, and someone who can work with and relate to these families. I not only want to work for these families with sick children I want to educate them as well. Having a sick child is a new normal for many families unfortunately. My ambition is to create a safe space for these families to have the hard discussions and not be afraid to ask the scary questions. As a nurse you have a responsibility to not only your patient but to their families. When working with children you need the trust of the entire family. I'm hoping that by perusing a career in the pediatric space I can create this kind of circle of trust for families in need. Society has sculpted me into the person I am today. I aspire to continue my CPR training to children in the public, private, and charter school space. Along with the CPR training I am currently involved in cardiac screening for high school athletes. After finding out that a regular EKG is not performed at a physical I have been working with some local health care leaders and local fire departments in getting EKG screenings in high schoolers mandatory. I AM trying to save the world one heart at a time.
