My name is Lily, and as a graduating senior this 2024 school year, I will be attending Susquehanna University and majoring in business. To start, there are a few things that spurred my interest in the aspects that come with studying business, and they are my involvement as a field hockey player, my membership in FBLA, and my position in Oxford Rotary Club. In becoming a successful business leader, I believe that having the quality of environmental and self awareness is crucial. On the field hockey field, I have gained the ability to become aware of my body positioning to help me stay alert and agile during game play, as well as connect with my teammates both socially and instructively on and off the field. Running for and becoming a co-captain my junior year and continuing into my senior year was vital in improving my communication skills, which prompted me to make friends and help my teammates whenever they wanted game clarification. Overall, I believe that my role on the field hockey field has guided me towards my interest in business studies, and I am grateful for the experiences being a co-captain gave me. I am looking forward to positively implementing the lessons I have learned within the sport into my career in the future. Secondly, I truly believe that being a member of the club FBLA, (Future Business Leaders of America), has given me valuable knowledge which will prepare me for a career in business. Being able to organize fundraising events for the club as well as attend the FBLA State Leadership Conference three years in a row has taught me how to dress like a business woman, act professionally, and see what leadership looks like in a corporate setting with other high school students in attendance. Moreover, as the club secretary my senior year, I have typed minutes at our monthly meetings, and raised awareness of the club in order to gain more members. I think that my experiences of being a member of FBLA has allowed me to want to study business over anything else, in hopes of leaving a positive impact on the world. Lastly, my membership in the Oxford community organization, Rotary Club, has significantly boosted my listening and writing skills. As the high school’s club journalist for the Rotary Club, I attend monthly meetings and write Senior of the Month articles for the students that the school principal elects. At the meetings, the two seniors make short speeches, and my job is to pay attention closely and take notes on what they say in order to later write an article about them. I have had this job since my sophomore year of high school, and each year I get the opportunity to learn more about the year’s graduating seniors as well as improve my article writing skills. In a career in the future, I believe that my membership in the Rotary Club will be helpful by the journalism/business relationship I have experienced with the aid of listening, a necessary tool within a successful business field. So, in conclusion, with the help of extracurricular activities, I have been able to discover not only my interests in a career, but also more about myself. I have learned the importance of qualities such as environmental and self awareness, how to be prepared in a corporate setting, and the value of good listening. From this, I believe that my college education will help me attain my goal of defining myself as a successful business woman and gain a productive occupation that will positively alter society.
