When I was younger, I was in love with the idea of doing something involving music. My middle school and high school band directors were not just teachers; they were mentors who shaped my understanding of music and the role it plays in bringing people together. Their passion for music and their ability to inspire students fueled my dreams. I remember the thrill of playing in the band, the camaraderie among the musicians, and the joy of performing together. The thought of leading a group of students in a similar manner filled me with excitement, and I envisioned a future where I would inspire young musicians just as my directors had inspired me.
However, during my sophomore year of high school, I had the opportunity to shadow a band director at a rival high school since it is a requirement to job shadow at my high school. I hoped this experience would affirm my desire to pursue a career in music education. To my surprise, what I discovered changed everything. While I enjoyed observing the classes and the rehearsals, I found that the day-to-day realities of being a band director were not what I had envisioned. I witnessed the immense pressure that came with managing a large ensemble, the constant push to reach high-performance standards, and the stress of navigating different personalities within the group.
As I immersed myself in this experience, I realized that the role of a band director entailed more than just music; it involved significant administrative responsibilities, coordinating competitions, and dealing with the challenges that come with a diverse group of students. Suddenly, the dream that once seemed so appealing felt daunting, and I began to question whether this was truly the right path for me.
Thankfully, I have a passion for photography as well. It started as a hobby, capturing moments with friends and exploring my surroundings through the lens of a camera. I was fascinated by the way a photograph could tell a story, evoke emotion, and capture fleeting moments in time. The more I practiced, the more I found that photography allowed me to express myself creatively in ways that resonated with me deeply.
Transitioning from the idea of becoming a band director to pursuing a photography career was not easy. I grappled with my identity and the fear of disappointing those who had supported my dream of being a music educator. However, as I continued to explore photography, I recognized that following my passion was essential to my happiness. I decided to embrace this new direction, enrolling in photography courses and building a portfolio that reflected my vision and creativity.
Today, I am fully committed to pursuing photography as my career. Whether it’s capturing the essence of a moment during an event, telling a story through a series of images, or simply exploring the world around me, I find fulfilment and joy in every click of the shutter. While my childhood dream of being a band director was nurtured by passion and inspiration, I have come to understand that my true path lies in creating art through photography.

From an early age, the arts have been my sanctuary, igniting a passion that has only grown stronger over the years. As I approach nineteen, I am excited to embark on a journey to pursue a BFA in digital photography. This path not only allows me to hone my craft but also positions me to make a lasting, positive impact through my artistry.
Being a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community has significantly influenced my artistic vision. I believe art has the unparalleled ability to foster empathy, challenge stereotypes, and celebrate diversity. Through my photography, I aim to encapsulate genuine moments that reflect the rich tapestry of human experiences, particularly those of individuals from marginalized backgrounds. I aim to illuminate their stories, contributing to a broader dialogue about acceptance and resilience.
In addition to my artistic pursuits, I am drawn to exploring the intersection between technology and storytelling. The digital world offers boundless opportunities for creativity, and I am eager to experiment with innovative techniques that enhance the visual impact of my work. I envision integrating multimedia elements into my photography to engage audiences on multiple levels, inviting them to experience narratives in immersive ways. As I delve deeper into this artistic journey, I remain steadfast in my belief that every image has the power to evoke emotions and spark conversations that transcend barriers. Through this exploration, I hope to refine my voice and expand the reach of my artistry, ultimately championing not only the stories of the LGBTQ+ community but also those of all marginalized voices seeking representation and validation in a world that often overlooks their existence. Art has the unparalleled ability to foster empathy, challenge stereotypes, and celebrate diversity. Through my photography, I aim to encapsulate genuine moments that reflect the rich tapestry of human experiences, particularly those of individuals from marginalized backgrounds. I aim to illuminate their stories, contributing to a broader dialogue about acceptance and resilience.
Beyond technical skills, I am committed to using my artistic platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and amplify awareness of our unique challenges. I envision creating compelling photo essays that not only document our journeys but also inspire understanding and compassion among wider audiences. By showcasing these authentic narratives, I hope to bridge gaps in perception and invite dialogue that fosters change.
I am also eager to collaborate with local organizations that support LGBTQ+ youth. By offering photography workshops, I can empower young artists to explore their identities and express themselves authentically. I believe that nurturing creativity in a supportive environment can help cultivate confidence and self-acceptance, enabling these individuals to share their unique stories with the world.
Ultimately, I aspire to merge my love for digital photography with a commitment to social justice. My goal is to create impactful work that resonates deeply and promotes conversations about our diverse experiences. By doing so, I hope to contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate society, demonstrating that art is not just an expression of self; it can be a powerful catalyst for meaningful change.
Harry & Mary Sheaffer Scholarship
In an increasingly interconnected world, the role of empathy and understanding in building a global community cannot be overstated. As someone pursuing a BFA in digital photography, I believe my unique talents and skills can contribute significantly to fostering these values on both local and global scales.
Photography, at its core, is a medium that transcends language and cultural barriers. It captures moments, emotions, and stories that resonate with people regardless of their backgrounds. Through my lens, I can tell stories that highlight the beauty of diverse cultures and experiences while also shedding light on the challenges we face as a global community. My ambition is to use photographs not just as art pieces, but as tools for advocacy and awareness.
By attending events, festivals, or even everyday encounters in my community, I aim to document and share the narratives of underrepresented groups. This means engaging with people from various backgrounds, listening to their stories, and offering them a platform to express themselves. Whether showcasing the rich cultural traditions of indigenous communities or portraying the daily struggles of marginalized individuals, my work will aim to build bridges of understanding between different audiences. Through exhibitions, social media campaigns, or community outreach, I hope to spark conversations that foster empathy.
Moreover, I believe that art has the power to evoke emotions and promote reflection, which can lead to a deeper understanding of our shared humanity. I intend to collaborate with other artists, both locally and globally, to create multimedia projects that explore themes of empathy, resilience, and connection. These collaborations might involve combining photography with poetry, music, or public installations to reach a wider audience and make a more profound impact. For instance, creating a series of portraits accompanied by personal narratives can invite viewers to connect with the subjects personally, encouraging them to reflect on their perceptions and biases.
Education also plays a vital role in building an empathetic community. I plan to use my skills to conduct workshops or mentorship programs focused on digital photography and storytelling. By teaching others how to express themselves through this medium, I can empower individuals to share their own stories and experiences. Creating art can be cathartic and transformative, providing a channel for self-expression that promotes understanding and healing.
I am also committed to exploring the ethical considerations that accompany photography. Understanding the responsibility that comes with representing someone else's story is crucial. I will strive to practice ethical storytelling by obtaining consent, ensuring that subjects feel comfortable, and providing proper context to their narratives. This approach not only respects the dignity of those I photograph but also sets a standard for how art can be integrated into advocacy work responsibly.
Finally, in a digital age where misinformation can spread rapidly, I feel compelled to use my photography to counteract stereotypes and harmful narratives. By showcasing real, nuanced perspectives that challenge dominant narratives, I aim to contribute to a more informed and compassionate understanding of global issues, be they migration, inequality, or climate change.
My journey as a digital photographer offers me a unique platform to foster empathy and understanding within our global community. By capturing and sharing diverse stories, collaborating with fellow artists, educating others, and adhering to ethical principles, I aspire to create art that not only inspires but also cultivates connections that bridge divides. It is through these connections that we can build a more inclusive and empathetic world, where understanding and compassion are the cornerstones of our shared humanity.

John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
From a young age, I found solace and inspiration in the world of arts and photography. Capturing a fleeting moment through the lens of a camera allows me to express emotions and tell stories that words often fail to convey. This deep-seated passion eventually led me to choose a BA in Digital Photography as my field of study. I aspire to merge my creative inclination with an impactful purpose, using photography not just as a medium of self-expression, but as a tool for social change and awareness.

Through my lens, I want to document the stories of marginalized communities, raising awareness about their struggles, cultures, and aspirations. By capturing the essence of their experiences, I aim to foster understanding and dialogue, bridging the gap between different worlds and perspectives, and as Fred R. Barnard said, "a picture is worth a thousand words".
A pivotal moment that solidified my desire to pursue this path occurred during a vacation where I photographed an abandoned hotel, frozen in time from what was once a lively and busy place, now left to rot and let time take it's course.
In addition to my passion for advocacy through photography, I have set personal goals that will contribute to my professional journey. I aim to build a portfolio that reflects a diverse range of subjects and themes, while also honing my technical skills in digital photography and editing. Diva of Halo Legacy Scholarship
From a young age, I was captivated by the world around me, drawn to the vibrant spectrum of human experience and the beauty inherent in diversity. As I explored this world, my passion for digital photography alongside my love for the arts in general emerged as powerful mediums through which I could express not only what I saw but also who I am. Now, as a pansexual non-binary individual, I find my identity deeply intertwined with my ambitions and dreams, shaping the way I view art, culture, and community.
My journey has not been without challenges. Like many in the LGBTQIA+ community, I have faced discrimination and prejudice that have tested my resilience. These experiences, while painful, have fueled my determination to create meaningful work that celebrates authenticity and challenges societal norms. Photography provides me with an avenue to capture not just images but also stories—stories that are often overlooked or silenced. I am passionate about highlighting the rich tapestry of identities within the LGBTQIA+ community, using my lens to advocate for visibility, acceptance, and love.
Coco Chanel once said, "In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different." This resonates deeply with me and serves as a guiding principle in my work. I intend to use the funds from this scholarship to further my education in digital photography, equipping myself with the technical skills and creative knowledge necessary to carry on Coco’s legacy of innovation and defiance against conformity. With advanced training, I hope to push the boundaries of traditional photography, experimenting with mixed media and digital art to create pieces that challenge stereotypes and celebrate the beauty of diversity.
Moreover, I aspire to create a platform that uplifts underrepresented voices within the LGBTQIA+ community. I envision hosting workshops and community projects that empower individuals to express themselves through photography. By fostering a safe and inclusive space, I aim to provide tools for marginalized voices, helping them share their unique stories through the art of image-making. Carrying on Coco’s legacy means harnessing creativity to not only reflect society but also to influence it, encouraging others to embrace their identities unapologetically.
As I look toward the future, I am excited by the possibilities that lie ahead. Living authentically as a pansexual non-binary person has granted me a unique perspective, allowing me to empathize with the struggles of others and find inspiration in resilience. My identity fuels my creativity and reinforces my commitment to advocacy through my art. Together with the skills I aim to acquire through my studies, I believe I can create impactful work that contributes to the ongoing conversation about acceptance, love, and the celebration of differences.
Photography is not just my passion; it is a means through which I can advocate for change, connect with others, and honor the legacy of those who have come before me, including the indomitable Coco Chanel. With this scholarship, I can further my education, enhance my craft, and ultimately empower others in the LGBTQIA+ community to share their stories and shine their light on the world. Through art, I hope to inspire resilience, acceptance, and love, ensuring that no voice goes unheard. Through my lens, I aim to capture the beauty of being different and the power it holds to transform lives.
LGBTQ+ Wellness in Action Scholarship
As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, my mental and physical wellness is not only vital for my personal well-being but also deeply connected to the broader context of my identity and experiences. For me, maintaining good health means finding balance in a world that often feels unwelcoming. It is crucial for my ability to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally, especially as I navigate the challenges that come with being both a student and an LGBTQ+ person.
Mental wellness is particularly significant for individuals like myself who face unique stressors, including discrimination, stigma, and the struggle for acceptance. Growing up, I often felt isolated and misunderstood, grappling with my sexual identity in environments that were not always supportive. These experiences have taught me the importance of finding safe spaces and building a community that uplifts rather than undermines my sense of self. Surrounding myself with supportive friends and mentors has proven essential; they encourage open dialogues around mental health, which alleviates the feelings of loneliness and anxiety that can often accompany living authentically.
However, maintaining good mental health is not without its challenges. As a student, the pressures of academic performance can sometimes overshadow my well-being. There are days when the workload feels overwhelming, and the fear of judgment creeps in, particularly during moments of vulnerability. Balancing studies, extracurricular activities, and personal life can create a perfect storm for stress. On top of that, I sometimes encounter microaggressions or overt discrimination, which can be taxing on my mental health. I’ve learned the hard way that it’s vital to prioritize self-care, but implementing this into my daily routine amidst academic pressures requires constant effort.
Physical wellness is equally important as it contributes to my overall emotional stability. I have always been an advocate for regular exercise and healthy eating, yet finding time for these activities can be difficult in a hectic academic schedule. The stress of school often leads me to neglect physical health as I maximize every moment for studying, which can result in a cycle of fatigue and decreased motivation. Engaging in physical activities—be it through university sports, yoga classes, or simply going for a run—helps me clear my mind, reduce anxiety, and enhance my mood. I aim to create a routine that allows me to stay active while balancing my academic responsibilities.
Additionally, the stigma surrounding mental health, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community, can be disheartening. Too often, individuals may dismiss their struggles or fear seeking help due to societal pressures. I’ve witnessed friends grapple with this, and it reinforces my understanding that open conversations about mental health are crucial. Schools and universities need to foster inclusive environments that not only support academic achievement but also promote mental wellness. Accessible counselling services and LGBTQ+-specific support groups would greatly benefit students struggling to prioritize their health.

KC R. Sandidge Photography Scholarship
My journey in developing the portfolio I submitted has been a reflective and transformative method during the last 4 years. Each photo showcased tells a completely unique tale, capturing moments that resonate with personal emotions and stories.
Starting with the recent addition from 2023, I photographed an abandoned inn that captivated my imagination. This photograph is a testimony to the passage of time and the testimonies hidden inside forgotten spaces. As I explored the web page, I should almost hear the echoes of laughter and lifestyles that when stuffed the corridors, creating a haunting yet lovely photograph that conveys each decay and nostalgia.
In 2022, I chose to focus at the sensitive beauty of nature, taking pictures an up-close shot of a flower. This image displays my appreciation for the small, intricate details that often go omitted in our speedy-paced lives. The colourful hues and great textures remind visitors to pause and locate splendor in the present second, even amidst chaos.
The different snap shots, taken in 2021 and 2020, depict sunsets on a ferry, showcasing the serene majesty of nature. Each photo functions the interaction of mild, water, and the graceful glide of seagulls. Watching the sun dip under the horizon because it painted the sky in breathtaking colors became a profound revel in. These pictures signify tranquility and connection, evoking a feel of peace and reflection.
Overall, this portfolio represents not just a collection of photographs, however a journey of exploration, appreciation for the world around me, and a growing expertise of my creative voice. Each 12 months brought new perspectives and inspirations, shaping the photographer I am these days.
Leela Shah "Be Bold" Womens' Empowerment Scholarship
My mother lived a life of deep compassion and resilience, in that her actions spoke louder than any words possibly could. She spent over twenty years of her life serving the homeless, volunteering at food banks, and ensuring people who are so often forgotten are reminded that they too have inherent worth. Even as I continue to live through life without her presence following her passing in 2018, her legacy has strongly influenced my identity and path that I hope to have laid out for myself.
In my formative years, I would often accompany my mother on her volunteer activities. I remember the cold winter mornings when we went out to feed people who were homeless. Despite the freezing weather, she was warm—treating every person with respect and genuine care. One day, I watched her give her scarf to a lady who wasn't wearing one. I asked her why, and she said, "If we have something to give, we should. That's how we make the world better." In that moment, a value system that I hold dear to this day was cemented in me: belief in using what we have—be it resources, knowledge, or talent—to lift others. This ethos profoundly shapes my interests in photography, museum studies, art history, and political science. Through the medium of photography, I aspire to document narratives that evoke empathy, similar to the impact of my mother's actions. Museum studies and art history provide avenues for the preservation and dissemination of cultural narratives that frequently remain overlooked, reflecting her dedication to amplifying marginalized voices.
On the other hand, political science arms me with the wherewithal to advocate for systemic changes that will address inequalities—much like her tireless efforts to address immediate needs.
If this opportunity is granted to me, I would invest the funds in my education and the pursuit of these intersecting interests. I envision a future wherein I create art and spaces that stimulate dialogue and facilitate change. My mother has taught me that even the smallest acts, like feeding someone or sharing a scarf, can ripple out. Through the education these funds would help me with, I want to amplify that effect—to use the power of story, of advocacy, and of preserving culture to make a world full of love. Though my mother is no longer with me, her spirit continues to be an active guide. Her selflessness taught me the meaning of community, her tenacity showed me the need for resilience, and her love gave me the confidence to dream. This opportunity would enable me to honor her legacy by putting into practice the things she taught me in a way that brings about a kinder, better world.
