By the time I was four, the name Lilli Libowitz was legend at my pediatrician’s office. From desperately trying to outrun nurses to emitting ear-splitting screams that sent children in the waiting room into a frenzy, routine medical visits seemed like epic battles. Little did I know, and neither did anyone else at the time, that I was struggling with sensory processing disorder (SPD), a neurological dysfunction that causes difficulties with processing sensory information. The first indications were difficulty with tactile stimuli; I was, literally, uncomfortable in my own skin. Then, the symptoms progressed to include muscle weakness on one side, and a lack of stability, coordination, and balance. I seemed clumsy and uncoordinated, and it began to affect my confidence. To overcome my SPD deficits, I needed to regularly tackle novel physical challenges, and break them down into a series of steps. For the next eight years, my parents signed me up for a seemingly endless roster of activities from physical therapy to occupational therapy, gymnastics to dance, and even playing the piano. While some activities came more easily, others required intense, ongoing effort. As time went on, my SPD issues resolved and the symptoms became imperceptible to others. If I didn’t tell you, you wouldn't know. But while my symptoms faded, a mystery remained. I wanted to understand the biological facts behind my SPD and gain insight into how my brain coped with and ultimately overcame the disorder. When I began researching sensory processing disorders, I felt frustrated by a lack of accessible content for teens. Although SPD is most prevalent in kids and teenagers, articles were written for adults. There was an unmet need, so I combined my love of journalism and biological sciences to publish Brain Waves, an online medical journal for teens. In high school, I co-founded a Biomedical Club for students to learn with experts and one another. Further cementing my passion for biology was an internship with a nephrologist this summer. I learned to identify symptoms of chronic kidney disease and acute renal failure, along with treatment options. Most importantly, I learned by watching a compassionate nephrologist care with dignity and kindness for sick patients. He reminded me of an occupational therapist who treated me years ago. She was attuned to my emotional wellbeing as well as my physical wellbeing. Through a holistic approach, she trained my body to build motor planning and sequencing skills, helping me regain my confidence and find my voice again. I am fortunate that my SPD story had a happy ending and I am grateful to have gained so much from the experience. Now when I encounter challenges, I know how to develop strategies, identify resources, push through perceived limitations, overcome setbacks, and persist until I accomplish my goals. Through this journey, I became a realistic optimist; I know it is possible to overcome obstacles that can seem insurmountable. I built the habits of hard work, discipline, and perseverance. I learned that addressing the emotional needs of the patient along with the physical ones can be transformational. I gained the strength and skills to advocate for myself as well as for others. I recognized that my successes were not mine alone, but achieved through the efforts of a community of caregivers including my pediatrician, occupational therapists, teachers, and parents. Through this journey, I also discovered my passion and purpose. When I envision my future self, I see a doctor who incorporates skills and knowledge with compassion and sensitivity. I am excited for the challenges ahead and the opportunities to serve others - maybe, even, to change their lives.

Mr. Silberman, my eleventh-grade math teacher, holds a special place in my heart as a vivid example of how a single person can profoundly change the course of one's life. The story of Mr. Silberman, my high school math teacher, holds a special place in my heart as a vivid example of how a single person can profoundly change the course of one's life. The backdrop of my journey includes grappling with ADHD and spatial reasoning learning disabilities that make math seem like an unconquerable mountain. Struggling and feeling incapable of achieving that elusive 'A' in math had become the norm for me. But Mr. Silberman's entrance into my academic life rewrote that narrative, showing me the power of a supportive mentor who saw me for who I was and believed in my potential. The discovery of my ADHD in eighth grade was a revelation that reframed my academic experiences. Until then, I had managed to keep up appearances, earning decent grades despite having to invest significantly more effort than my peers. Unbeknownst to everyone, I was navigating a hidden challenge that tested my determination and resilience, molding me into a more tenacious learner. Learning about my ADHD left my family surprised. My grades hadn't hinted at any difficulties, but internally, I was working twice as hard. Armed with this newfound understanding, I began high school with a different outlook. While my classmates appeared to breeze through their studies, I knew I'd have to exert extra effort, especially in math, due to my spatial reasoning struggles. There were even concerns that I might have dyscalculia, given my math-related challenges. Then came the turning point: my pre-calculus class with Mr. Silberman. His approach and the support of my classmates became unwavering pillars of my academic journey. Mr. Silberman's patience was astounding. He dissected intricate mathematical concepts into digestible portions, tackling each unit with painstaking detail. His guidance in conquering spatial reasoning and improving graphing techniques not only elevated my understanding of math but also connected me more deeply with my classmates. Navigating my learning disabilities has been an uphill battle. Juggling schoolwork and ADHD meant mastering time management, task prioritization, and embracing the courage to seek help when needed. Advocating for my own needs emerged as a vital skill, as did communicating with teachers about what worked for me and exploring alternative learning methods. Mr. Silberman's impact reverberates beyond the classroom. His belief in my potential challenged the prevailing narrative that my learning disabilities would forever limit my math achievements. His guidance wasn't just about math; it was about showing me that with unwavering determination, coupled with the right support and mindset, I could surmount even the most daunting challenges. In a nutshell, Mr. Silberman's role in my life showcases the incredible influence a devoted educator can wield. His individualized approach not only transformed my math capabilities but also instilled a profound belief in my ability to triumph over adversity. My journey underscores the significance of resilience, growth, and the remarkable capacity we possess to overcome obstacles, armed with the right mentorship and the unshakable determination to succeed.

Like the ever-changing reflections of Taylor Swift's "mirrorball," I have discovered that my identity as a Hufflepuff often involves adapting to various situations and mirroring different aspects of my personality to accommodate the needs and expectations of those around me. This process is reminiscent of the lines in the song, "I'm still a believer, but I don't know why, I've never been a natural, all I do is try, try, try." These lyrics resonate with my Hufflepuff nature, as I've always believed in the power of hard work and determination, rather than relying on innate qualities. In the enchanting world of Hogwarts, where Gryffindors exhibit courage, Ravenclaws showcase intellect, and Slytherins pursue ambition, Hufflepuffs like me often find themselves working diligently behind the scenes, sometimes overlooked by more overt personalities. Just as Taylor's lyrics suggest, being a mirrorball can mean being underestimated or overshadowed, as my genuine kindness and dedication don't always command attention. I've learned to embrace this aspect of being a Hufflepuff, recognizing that my true value isn't solely determined by external recognition. Taylor's lyrics also explore the notion of vulnerability and the balance between revealing and concealing one's true self. This deeply resonates with my Hufflepuff identity, as my willingness to adapt and connect with different people sometimes involves revealing different facets of myself. Much like the vulnerability associated with Hufflepuff's caring and empathetic nature, I've realized that authenticity and connection are born from these moments of openness. However, in the intricate tapestry of Hogwarts houses, Hufflepuff stands as a symbol of unity, collaboration, and genuine connection. Just as Taylor's song captures the dance of a mirrorball, my journey as a Hufflepuff is a delicate balance of adapting, evolving, and embracing my multifaceted nature. While I might not always seek the spotlight or engage in competitive endeavors, my commitment to personal growth and making a positive impact is unwavering. In the midst of the dynamic Hogwarts houses, my Hufflepuff identity shines brightly in its own quiet yet powerful way. As the lyrics convey, I may not be a "natural," but my dedication, kindness, and loyalty blend harmoniously to create a unique and authentic reflection. So, in the spirit of the "Harry Potter and the Sorting Hat Scholarship," which celebrates the magic of self-discovery, I find my own magic in being a mirrorball—a Hufflepuff who adapts, mirrors, and reflects a genuine commitment to the values that define me.

Selflessness is a significant part of who I am, driven by my strong desire to help others and my genuine interest in medical research and practice. My commitment to this cause has grown through various impactful experiences, influencing my values and guiding my future direction. Last summer, I took part in a public health and community service initiative in the Dominican Republic that left an indelible mark on my values and aspirations. My exposure to the formidable health challenges faced by marginalized communities, especially those residing in the Bateyes—an impoverished rural region near sugar cane fields—highlighted the critical need for healthcare access. Participating in projects that tackled sanitation and clean water availability underscored the importance of empathy and innovative solutions in addressing complex health issues. I also led health workshops for kids and played a part in setting up a health clinic. These actions highlighted the value of sharing knowledge and closing gaps in healthcare. Getting Wilderness First Aid and CPR certification as part of this initiative added another layer to my dedication to helping others. This training reinforced my commitment to integrity and the responsibility to save lives, no matter the situation. In a parallel vein, my initiation of a collaboration between the Biomedical Club I founded at my school and Friendship Circle—a nonprofit where teen volunteers work with children with special needs—exemplified my belief in the power of kindness and genuine human connections. This collaboration demonstrated the transformative influence of nurturing individual potential and fueled my commitment to contributing to improved lives through compassion and support. My commitment goes beyond these projects. I also work as a peer tutor at the writing center and for middle school students. These roles reflect my desire to help others learn and grow, which aligns with my values of kindness and innovation. Through these volunteer experiences, I've learned about empathy, compassion, and working together, which has helped me become more selfless. This has driven my interest in medicine and my strong commitment to making a positive difference. I want to combine my passion for medical research and practice with my dedication to helping others, embodying the values I've gained from volunteering. A significant area where my commitment to helping others is evident is in my determination to tackle the stigma associated with mental health. Seeing the widespread absence of conversations and the negative perceptions of mental health and mental illness among my peers sparked a strong motivation to initiate change. took the initiative to create the "Brain Waves Journal," an online platform tailored for teenagers, to normalize discussions around mental health. This journal provides a safe space for sharing personal narratives, offering practical resources, and promoting awareness. Because of this, I'm pursuing dual degrees in psychology and biology. This combined study will give me a well-rounded understanding of mental health, which will be valuable for my future as a psychiatrist. I'll be able to blend scientific knowledge with compassionate care to offer comprehensive support. My dedication to helping others and my passion for medical research and practice demonstrate my selflessness. Whether it's working in underserved communities or addressing mental health stigma, these experiences highlight my core values of empathy, compassion, and innovation. As I pursue a path in medicine, I'm resolute in my commitment to making a positive difference for individuals and communities, guided by the principles I've learned from my volunteer work.

Since I was young, I've been drawn to Disney's captivating stories and characters. As a child, I was particularly fascinated by Belle. It wasn't just her charm, but the fact that she resembled me. Wanting to be like Belle came from a desire to see someone like myself in fairy tales, showing that dreams could go beyond reality. This was my first experience of Disney's magic—making the extraordinary feel relatable. Wanting to be like a princess might seem cliche. But for me, it was different. Don't get me wrong, I live a privileged life, but I couldn't help but envy friends who had fancy Disney dolls, their own rooms, and the newest princess outfits. At that time, Disney princess movies seemed focused on luxury, and being a princess looked like having a lot of material things. However, as I grew up, I realized that real beauty and happiness were more than just surface-level riches. As I grew older, I realized the real importance of Disney movies. They were more than stories about princes and princesses; they were about courage, loyalty, acceptance, and strength. Those beloved characters represented values that stood the test of time, encouraging us to adopt those qualities too. During my battles with depression, the wisdom from these films provided comfort. The Disney heroines showed a mix of virtues—kindness, loyalty, and understanding—qualities that not only uplifted themselves but also inspired others. I learned a lot about self-discovery from Disney's princesses. Their teachings weren't just about accepting myself; they also encouraged me to understand and care for others and the world around me. They showed that happiness wasn't something far away; it was found within. Moana's wise words struck a chord, reminding me that contentment can be found in the present. Tinker Bell's advice about selflessness guided me to value real love over possessiveness. Belle's meaningful perspective taught me that losing things could help us truly appreciate life's true worth. As time passed, my reasons for wanting to be a princess changed. It wasn't about material things anymore; it was about adopting the qualities these characters represented. Being a princess wasn't just about having privileges; it meant choosing to be courageous in tough times, faithful in relationships, and firm in beliefs. In the wide scope of Disney's impact, Belle's role stands out as a significant part of my journey. She was the first link to that enchanting world, a symbol of representation that sparked my imagination. From her story, I understood that a hunger for adventure, a passion for learning, and an open heart could be more valuable than any magical castle or royal title. For me, Disney is more than just entertainment; it's a source of wisdom, compassion, and inspiration. It's a space where characters on paper and screen become mentors, friends, and guides. It's where dreams and reality meet, where princesses represent more than just royalty; they embody human virtues. This world grows with us, revealing new insights as we journey through life's twists and turns.

My journey through mental health challenges has had a profound impact on my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. In eighth grade, I faced a battle with anorexia, driven by a need to control the uncertainties in my life and manage overwhelming anxiety. This led me down a dangerous path, resulting in severe weight loss and a constant feeling of inadequacy. This experience sparked my interest in mental health, which has grown into a strong commitment to making a difference. As I went through my own recovery, I realized the deep impact of mental illness on individuals and families, highlighting the need for education, awareness, and support. This realization motivated me to create the "Brain Waves Journal," an online platform for teenagers struggling with mental health issues. I designed the website, researched various topics, and curated articles to provide information about mental health and foster a better understanding of how the brain and behavior work. I also created a space for teenagers to share their personal stories, along with essential mental health resources. Throughout high school, I continued my dedication to promoting physical and mental well-being. As president of the Biomedical Club and Steminism Club, I emphasized the importance of physical health for overall wellness. Discovering that I had ADHD in eighth grade was a revelation that reshaped my perspective on my academic journey. Before that, I was doing well in school, but no one, not even me, knew that I was putting in double the effort compared to others. This hidden challenge put my resilience to the test and pushed me to overcome difficulties in my studies. When my family found out about my ADHD, they were surprised. My grades had never shown any issues, but behind the scenes, I was working much harder to keep up the appearance of success. The difference between my grades and the work I was putting in confused me, but it also made me determined to do well despite this new challenge. Realizing I had ADHD changed how I looked at school, and I started high school with a different mindset. While my classmates seemed to handle their work easily, I had to work really hard, especially in math because of my spatial reasoning issues. At first, my parents thought I might have dyscalculia due to my struggles with math. However, things changed during my pre-calculus class. My math teacher, Mr. Silberman, and my classmates supported me a lot. With their help, I tackled my spatial reasoning problems and developed better graphing techniques. This not only helped me understand math better but also made me feel more connected to my classmates. Dealing with my learning challenges has been tough. Balancing school and ADHD means I have to manage my time well, prioritize tasks, and ask for help when needed. Advocating for myself has been important too – telling my teachers what I need and finding ways to learn that suit me. A few things keep me going despite these challenges. First, I want to prove that having ADHD doesn't mean I can't succeed. Second, the support from my family, friends, and teachers reminds me that I'm not alone. Lastly, my passion for medical research and practice keeps me motivated. This interest helps me through tough study sessions and encourages me to find new ways to handle my learning challenges. My journey with ADHD has shown me the importance of understanding and supporting mental well-being. Experiencing the challenges firsthand has fueled my determination to pursue a path in mental health, aiming to bridge the gap in awareness and support, and empower others facing similar struggles. Seeing how mental health is stigmatized in high school has been a wake-up call. It's easy to talk about physical pain, but sharing emotional struggles is harder. This inspired me to actively work against this stigma. That's why I'm pursuing degrees in psychology and biology, intending to enter the field of psychiatry. By combining insights from both areas, I want to offer well-rounded support to those dealing with mental health challenges. To make a difference, I started the "Brain Waves Journal," an online platform for teenagers. It covers mental health topics, social media, and personal stories to make these conversations normal and provide resources. Getting degrees in psychology and biology will give me a solid foundation. I'll use this knowledge to blend science with empathy in my future career. My commitment to fighting mental health stigma is unwavering. I've seen its harm in high school, and I'm dedicated to changing that. With the "Brain Waves Journal" as a starting point, I'm determined to make mental health discussions common and encourage people to ask for help. My education and plans all revolve around this goal of helping those struggling with mental well-being.

As a non-traditional student, my academic journey has been shaped by two significant revelations: my ADHD diagnosis in eighth grade and my battle with anorexia during the same period. These challenges have not only transformed my perspective on education but also fueled my determination to overcome obstacles and excel. Discovering my ADHD diagnosis was a pivotal moment. Despite maintaining good grades, I was expending twice the effort compared to my peers due to my learning disability. This inconspicuous struggle tested my resilience and became a driving force to persevere in my educational pursuits. Simultaneously, my journey through mental health challenges, particularly anorexia, significantly altered my trajectory. The need for control in the face of uncertainties and anxiety led me down a dangerous path, causing significant weight loss and eroding my self-esteem. Through these trials, I've honed skills in time management, task prioritization, and self-advocacy. Balancing academic demands with ADHD demands structured routines and resourceful approaches. Similarly, overcoming anorexia required understanding triggers, seeking therapy, and reconstructing a healthy relationship with food. Despite these challenges, my determination to succeed remains unyielding. Firstly, I am resolute in demonstrating that learning disabilities and mental health struggles don't define potential. Secondly, unwavering support from family, friends, therapists, and psychiatrists reaffirms that obstacles can be surmounted with the right network. Discovering my ADHD diagnosis in eighth grade was a transformative moment that reshaped my understanding of my academic journey. Up until that point, I had been maintaining good grades, seemingly without much effort. However, the revelation of my learning disability unveiled a hidden struggle – I was investing twice the effort as my peers to achieve the same results. This unforeseen obstacle became a test of my resilience and a driving force to overcome challenges and persist in my educational pursuits. The news of my ADHD diagnosis initially caused confusion and surprise within my family. My outward academic performance had never hinted at this underlying challenge. But behind the scenes, I was expending substantial energy to maintain that façade of achievement. The gap between my grades and the effort I expended left me determined to succeed despite this new hurdle. This discovery reshaped my academic perspective as I entered high school. While my classmates seemed to effortlessly navigate their studies, I had to work relentlessly to keep up. This disparity was most apparent in math due to my spatial reasoning learning disability. My struggle with math even prompted consideration of dyscalculia testing. However, a pivotal moment occurred in my pre-calculus class, thanks to the exceptional support of my favorite math teacher, Mr. Silberman. With his patient guidance and the collaborative spirit of my peers, I confronted my spatial reasoning challenges head-on. Through their help, I developed effective graphing techniques that revolutionized my understanding and performance in math. This journey wasn't just about conquering a subject; it fostered a sense of camaraderie and shared learning among my classmates. Overcoming my learning challenges has demanded perseverance and determination. Balancing my academics with ADHD necessitates an unwavering commitment to time management, task prioritization, and seeking assistance when needed. Advocacy has also been instrumental – in expressing my needs and working with educators to adapt teaching methods to accommodate my learning style. My drive to pursue education despite these challenges stems from multiple sources. Firstly, I'm determined to show that my learning disability does not define my potential. Secondly, the support of my family, friends, therapist, and psychiatrist reinforces my belief that with the right network, no obstacle is insurmountable. My therapist has played a crucial role in helping me navigate and cope with my ADHD, while my psychiatrist prescribed medication that has significantly aided my learning journey. Lastly, my unshakable passion for medical research and practice propels me forward. This passion serves as a powerful motivator that carries me through intense study sessions and pushes me to find innovative solutions to my learning barriers. The movie that has resonated most profoundly with my life is Barbie. While many might perceive it as an anti-male or man-hating narrative, this interpretation couldn't be further from the truth. The true message of Barbie is sadly often lost on an audience that needs it most, a reality that adds to the movie's impact on my understanding of gender dynamics and societal struggles. Barbie's authentic message delves into the challenges faced by women and girls within a patriarchal society. It doesn't aim to demonize men but rather explores how patriarchal systems not only diminish women but also deprive men of emotional depth. This vicious cycle perpetuates a disconnected society, emphasizing the importance of bridging the gender gap for the betterment of everyone. The sentiments expressed regarding the movie's significance and the gender divide strike a chord with my own experiences. As a hopeful young girl growing up, I gradually became aware of the barriers and dangers women faced. The pain, camaraderie, and complex emotions woven into girlhood are something that only women can truly understand. The film becomes a vessel through which these unique experiences are given a voice. The poignant scene where self-doubt creeps in, such as feeling inadequate or lost in the journey to adulthood, resonates deeply. The struggle to find purpose, to live up to expectations, and to navigate a world that feels increasingly uncertain is a universal experience. It reflects the reality of many individuals, myself included, as we journey from idealistic childhood dreams to grappling with the complexities of adulthood. One of the most striking aspects of Barbie is its portrayal of Barbieland as imperfect but not in a way that devalues or disregards the male characters. In this world mirroring our own patriarchal society, women seek self-expression and independence, rather than power over men. The disparity between the two worlds highlights a painful reality – even in a world intended to mirror our own, women encounter threats and harassment. The stark contrast between the two realms underscores the vulnerability women face in the real world. Barbie's experience of feeling unsafe and exposed when transitioning to the reality of our world mirrors the unsettling truth that women often navigate an environment of fear, harassment, and violence. This poignant portrayal encapsulates the ongoing struggle to bridge the gap between genders and create a safer, more equitable society. The Barbie movie has deeply impacted my life by highlighting the profound gender dynamics that shape our experiences. It underscores the often-overlooked struggles of women and girls in a patriarchal society and the vital importance of fostering understanding and cooperation between genders. While some may misconstrue the movie's message, its true essence lies in shedding light on the complex interplay of emotions, challenges, and hopes that come with girlhood and adulthood in our ever-evolving world.

Observing the pervasive stigma surrounding mental health during my time as a high school student has been eye-opening. As I saw my friends grapple with challenges like anxiety, depression, and eating disorders, it ignited a profound desire within me to instigate change and dismantle the negative perceptions linked to mental well-being. While these struggles might not manifest as visibly as physical ailments, their ubiquity and emotional impact are undeniable. Expressing physical pain is straightforward, like saying "My leg hurts," but conveying emotional pain, such as "My heart is broken," is often more complex. These observations have propelled me to take action and actively engage in initiatives aimed at destigmatizing mental health and promoting well-being. Looking ahead, my educational path involves pursuing degrees in both psychology and biology, to enter the field of psychiatry combining insights from these two disciplines, I aim to provide comprehensive support to those facing mental health struggles. This decision was driven by witnessing the challenges my friends experienced and recognizing the limited discourse surrounding mental well-being. Society tends to prioritize discussions around physical health over mental health. While it's simple to communicate physical pain, addressing emotional pain holds equal importance. The stigma attached to mental health exacerbates the issue, particularly among teenagers dealing with these challenges. Mental health concerns are often dismissed or misunderstood, making it difficult for those in need to seek help. This stigma also leads to the formation of stereotypes that hinder open conversations about mental health. To counteract this, I initiated the "Brain Waves Journal," an online platform catering specifically to teenagers. The journal delves into topics related to mental health, social media, and personal narratives. Its purpose is to educate, engage, and normalize discussions surrounding mental well-being. By offering a platform for teenagers to share their own experiences, the journal reinforces the idea that they are not alone in their struggles. Additionally, it provides practical resources and hotlines for those seeking assistance. By embarking on a dual major in psychology and biology, I intend to develop a comprehensive understanding of mental health from diverse perspectives. This knowledge will serve as the foundation of my future career in psychiatry, allowing me to bridge scientific insights with empathetic support to ensure that individuals receive the well-rounded help they deserve. My commitment to challenging the stigma surrounding mental health is unswerving. As a high school student who has witnessed the damaging effects of this stigma, I am dedicated to creating positive change. With the "Brain Waves Journal" as a stepping stone, I am resolute in my determination to contribute to a society where discussions about mental health are commonplace, and individuals are empowered to seek the support they need. My academic journey and future career aspirations are all aligned with the overarching goal of making a lasting impact on the lives of those struggling with their mental well-being.

My journey through mental health challenges has been a transformative and empowering experience, shaping both my personal growth and my dedication to helping others. In eighth grade, I faced a battle with anorexia, a disorder that stemmed from my need to regain control over the uncertainties in my life while attempting to manage overwhelming anxiety. The quest for control led me down a dangerous path, causing me to lose 10 pounds, pushing me into the realm of being wildly underweight. The pervasive feeling of not being good enough became a constant companion, exacerbating my struggles. This pivotal phase in my life kindled an interest in mental health that has now blossomed into a passionate drive to facilitate change and understanding. As I navigated my own path to recovery, I discovered the profound impact of mental illness on individuals and families, and the dire need for education, awareness, and support in this domain. These realizations became the foundation upon which I built the Brain Waves Journal, an innovative online publication aimed at teenagers grappling with mental health issues. Pouring weeks of effort into designing the journal's website, researching a myriad of topics, and curating articles, I sought to create a space where teenagers could not only find valuable information about mental health and its treatment but also foster a deeper comprehension of the intricate workings of the brain, nervous system, and behavior. To cultivate a sense of community, I incorporated a segment where teenagers could share their personal stories, reinforcing the message that they are not alone in their struggles. Alongside these narratives, I provided essential mental health resources and helplines, extending a helping hand to those in need. My high school years marked a continuation of my commitment to advocating for both physical and mental well-being. As president of the Biomedical Club and Steminism Club, I took the opportunity to emphasize the vital role of physical health in achieving overall wellness. Recognizing that mental health is intricately connected to our overall well-being, I assumed the role of Health and Wellness Fellow, dedicating myself to raising awareness about mental health issues and fostering a supportive environment for those grappling with them. Serving as the Head of Communication for the Mental Health Awareness Club, I found a platform to share my story, encourage open conversations, and provide valuable insights into the challenges and triumphs of managing mental health. My journey through mental health challenges has emerged as a powerful catalyst for positive change. What once threatened to hold me back became the driving force behind my determination to make a difference. The struggles I faced became stepping stones that propelled me toward understanding, empathy, and resilience. Through the Brain Waves Journal and my roles in various clubs, I have found a way to channel my passion into concrete action, touching the lives of others who are navigating similar struggles. By the time I was four years old, the name Lilli Libowitz had become something of a legend at my pediatrician's office. I was infamous for my fear of shots, a fear so intense that I would sprint away from the nurses and seek refuge under the nearest table, doing everything I could to avoid those dreaded injections. The sight of a needle was enough to send my heart racing and my feet running. However, as I grew older, something remarkable happened. My aversion to healthcare, particularly those painful shots, began to transform into a fascination and a deep respect for the world of medicine. This metamorphosis was not an overnight change, but a gradual process that occurred through exposure, understanding, and a growing realization of the profound impact healthcare professionals have on people's lives. As I continued to visit the pediatrician's office, my fear of needles started to wane. This was partly due to the gentle and patient approach of the nurses and doctors who attended to me. They took the time to explain the purpose of the shots, the importance of vaccinations, and the temporary discomfort that came with them. Their kindness and empathy left a lasting impression on me, and slowly but surely, my perspective began to shift. The turning point came when I witnessed a nurse helping a frightened child receive a shot with incredible compassion. Instead of tears and tantrums, I saw a calm and brave little patient who was reassured and comforted by the nurse's caring demeanor. At that moment, I realized the power that healthcare professionals held – not just in their medical knowledge, but also in their ability to connect with patients on a human level, ease their fears, and make a positive impact on their lives during moments of vulnerability. This realization ignited a passion within me. I started to read books and watch documentaries about medicine and healthcare. I was captivated by stories of doctors and nurses who went above and beyond to help others, sometimes under challenging circumstances. The more I learned, the more my desire to contribute to this field grew. My journey from hiding under tables to wanting to be part of the healthcare world was complete. And so, my ambition turned toward nursing. I saw nursing as a profession that not only provided medical care but also encompassed the qualities of empathy, compassion, and human connection that had affected me so deeply. I wanted to be that reassuring presence for someone scared, just as I had been. I wanted to use my experiences to foster a positive environment for patients and help them navigate their health journeys with understanding and kindness. As I pursue my career in nursing, I am determined to bring a sense of empathy and compassion to my practice. I want to be the nurse who eases a child's fears, who holds a patient's hand through difficult moments, and who listens with genuine concern. By embracing the lessons of my own journey, I hope to have a positive effect on the world by making healthcare experiences more comfortable and compassionate for those in need – just as the healthcare professionals did for me when I was a frightened child hiding under tables.

Exploring the nature of the universe goes beyond just science; it is a journey that intertwines disciplines like biology and literature to provide a holistic understanding of human existence and the human experience. As a passionate advocate of both fields, I firmly believe in the importance of delving into the universe's mysteries and employing concepts from biology and literature to construct a comprehensive narrative of our place within it. Biology, the study of life itself, grants us a lens through which to explore the fundamental principles that govern living organisms. From the intricate mechanisms of cells to the astounding diversity of ecosystems, biology reveals the interconnectedness of life on Earth. As I delve into the world of biology, I am struck by the awe-inspiring harmony that underlies every living entity. The concept of evolution, proposed by Charles Darwin, forms the bedrock of modern biology. It teaches us that life is an intricate tapestry woven through the threads of adaptation and survival. This idea, coupled with the discovery of DNA's role as the blueprint of life, has empowered us to comprehend the origins and developments of various species. Parallel to my love for biology is a profound appreciation for literature, a medium through which humanity seeks to make sense of its existence. Literature, in its myriad forms, enables us to explore the human experience through the lens of imagination and empathy. From the philosophical inquiries of Dostoevsky to the introspective narratives of Toni Morrison, literature guides us through the intricate pathways of human emotions, aspirations, and struggles. Just as biology illuminates the biological mechanisms that shape us, literature reveals the complexities of our minds and souls. Themes such as identity, love, and mortality are woven into the fabric of literature, inviting us to reflect on the profound questions that define our humanity. In the quest to better understand the universe and our place within it, I envision employing the ideas and concepts from both biology and literature as interconnected threads, enriching the tapestry of knowledge. One such concept is the interconnectedness of all life forms. In biology, this is evident through the study of ecosystems, where each organism plays a vital role in maintaining the balance of nature. Literature, too, echoes this interconnectedness. Through characters and narratives, it portrays the ripple effects of individual actions on the broader tapestry of society. Furthermore, the concept of adaptation, central to biology, mirrors the resilience and adaptability of human beings depicted in literature. Characters often face challenges and transform in response, reflecting the innate survival instinct ingrained in both living organisms and literary personas. This shared theme underscores the universality of the human experience. The narrative of evolution, originating in biology, finds its parallel in the progression of ideas within literature. Just as species evolve over time, so do literary movements and ideologies. The Romantic period's focus on emotion and individualism, for instance, transformed into the Realist movement's emphasis on objective depiction of reality. These shifts mirror the dynamic evolution of scientific theories as new evidence reshapes our understanding of the universe. The intricate dance between biology and literature also shines a light on the nature of consciousness. While biology explores the physiological processes that give rise to consciousness, literature delves into the complexities of human thought and self-awareness. The philosophical concept of the mind-body problem, which questions the relationship between the physical brain and the immaterial mind, is both a subject of scientific inquiry and a recurring theme in literature's exploration of identity and consciousness. The pursuit of understanding the universe's nature is not confined to a single lens of inquiry. It is a multidimensional endeavor that benefits from the convergence of various disciplines. My passion for biology and literature drives me to bridge the gap between the scientific and theoretical realms, using concepts like evolution, interconnectedness, adaptation, and consciousness to weave a comprehensive narrative of human existence. Just as the universe's complexity knows no bounds, the exploration of its mysteries thrives when diverse perspectives and disciplines come together, enriching our understanding of the universe and our place within it.

Fear has undoubtedly woven its thread into my life, influenced by pivotal experiences that have left lasting imprints. One memory that stands out hails from sixth grade. It was a moment of approaching the cafeteria, hoping to join a group led by Hailey. Their hurtful words, branding me as "uncool" and "not good enough," hit me with force. The sting drove me to the bathroom, where I wrestled with doubts about my worth. This wasn't new; the previous bullying in fifth grade had already sown seeds of self-doubt. Those instances etched a fear within me, one that spurred me to seek validation externally. With Hailey's departure in seventh grade, that fear took on a fiercer form. To stave off loneliness, I opted for a change in appearance. I masked vulnerability with a facade of confidence, projecting an image that belied the underlying fear. Yet, that persistent fear whispered that I wasn't as pretty or as cool as the other girls. Growing older, this fear has matured into a self-doubt about my intellectual abilities, particularly pronounced in science classes dominated by boys. An incident from a science class stands out prominently, where I dared to comment on the glaring sexism within the room. Regrettably, my words were met with immediate demands for proof, treating my contribution as inconsequential. It seemed that, as a girl, my voice was easily dismissed. In the same class, I found the courage to address another pressing issue – the boys' frequent inappropriate jokes that left the girls uncomfortable. I also pointed out the unsettling pattern of me being consistently interrupted while speaking, in contrast to the boys. Ironically, this observation was validated as the boys continued to interrupt, ignoring my perspective. This fear, intertwined with my journey, has transformed me. Confronting sexism head-on, I persevered in voicing my concerns, even when met with dismissal and interruptions. These experiences became the catalyst for my determination to forge ahead, using my fear as fuel for change. Throughout my journey, I've refused to allow fear to dictate the course of my life. It has become a potent driver of growth, a constant reminder of the strides I've made. Embracing the role of an advocate for change, I embraced challenges to defy stereotypes and challenge ingrained biases. While traces of fear linger, they no longer shackle me. Instead, I've harnessed this fear to propel myself forward, transforming it into a wellspring of resilience and empowerment. I've notably grown from this journey of facing my fears. I've become more vocal in class, standing up to the boys and demanding my rightful space. While the progress achieved might not be as substantial as I hoped, I've still taken steps to transform the classroom environment into a more productive and inclusive one. Every time I speak up, challenge norms or advocate for change, I chip away at the fear's hold on me. It's a gradual process, but one that I'm committed to, driven by the desire to create a better learning environment for all. In essence, fear has indeed shaped my journey, rooted in significant moments. From the challenges of sixth and seventh grade to navigating male-dominated classes, this fear has taken on varying forms. Yet, instead of succumbing, I've harnessed it as a source of strength. This fear has played a defining role in propelling my journey, guiding my choices, and empowering me to rewrite my path. Through gradual steps, I've transformed this fear into a tool for progress, determined to create a more inclusive space.

It aimed to simplify the understanding of mental illnesses, treatments, and how the brain works, all in a way that would resonate with young readers. But the journal went beyond just providing information. It was created as an inclusive platform where teenagers could openly share their own stories, making space for open discussions about mental health without judgment. This platform was meant to show teens that they're not alone in their struggles and that there are resources out there to help. The Brain Waves Journal offers a resource that's accessible to teenagers, providing a space where honest conversations about mental health are encouraged. This effort allowed me to connect with others and provide a safe place for those seeking guidance. Alongside this, my roles as president of the Mental Health Awareness Club, Biomedical Club, and STEMinisim Club have also given me opportunities to promote understanding and awareness about important healthcare topics among my peers. The Valiyah Young Scholarship holds significant value in my journey. It will ease the financial burden of pursuing higher education and a career in psychiatry. With this support, I can fully focus on my studies and professional growth. This scholarship enables me to follow my passion for psychiatry and work toward improving mental well-being of individuals, families, and communities.

The person I lost, my great aunt Gloria, was a pillar of strength and an unwavering source of support in my life. Her impact on me was profound, shaping my values and outlook in ways I continue to cherish. Gloria's story is intertwined with my family's history, and her nurturing presence resonated deeply with each of us. Gloria played a vital role in our family, especially for my dad, who faced the tragic loss of both his parents to cancer when he was just 15. In the face of adversity, Gloria stepped in to help raise him, providing stability, love, and guidance during a challenging time. Despite growing up in a modest household, my dad found solace in his close relationship with Gloria, who would visit every weekend. Her dedication to him created a bond that was more profound than blood, solidifying a closeness that radiated throughout our family. As a result, Gloria wasn't just a great aunt to me; she was a cherished family matriarch who filled a grandmotherly role. Though I never had the chance to know my grandparents on my dad's side, Gloria effortlessly assumed that nurturing role in my life. Our weekends together were filled with shared stories, laughter, and the warmth of companionship. She opened her heart to me, sharing tales of her life experiences, challenges, and triumphs. These moments were priceless, as they bridged generational gaps and enriched my understanding of our family's journey. When Gloria's health declined and she entered hospice care, the transition was immensely challenging for our family. It was a heartbreaking shift to witness this vibrant, strong woman in a vulnerable state. Our visits changed from animated interactions to quiet conversations, reading books together as a way to connect even when words grew scarce. Yet, amidst the sadness, there was a sense of honor in being able to spend those precious moments with her. When Gloria passed away, I was confronted with grief and a sense of emptiness. The void left by her absence echoed through every facet of my life. Academically, I encountered struggles during my sophomore year. The emotional weight of losing someone who had been such a steadfast presence took a toll on my focus and motivation. The transition was undoubtedly tough, and it took time to navigate the grief and find a way forward. However, in the midst of sadness, a renewed sense of purpose emerged. Gloria's commitment to education, her unwavering support for my dad's journey, and her role as an advocate for learning echoed in my mind. As I reflected on her life and the indomitable spirit she exemplified, I realized that the best way to honor her memory was to carry forward her legacy of resilience, strength, and dedication to education. With her memory as my guiding light, I recommitted myself to my studies. I channeled my grief into determination, resolving to excel academically as a tribute to the incredible woman who had impacted me so profoundly. I reminded myself of the sacrifices she made for my dad's education and the consistent support she provided throughout her life. It became my mission to live up to the example she set, knowing that by doing so, I was not only honoring her legacy but also paving the way for my own personal growth.
