My name is Lidia Dita Tuke and I’m 18- years- old. I was born and raised in Ethiopia. When I was 14 years old my mother decided to move to the United States for better opportunities such as education, career opportunities, and better living conditions. My main goal upon graduating is to use my degree and the skills I’ve learned to bring back to my Motherland community in Ethiopia and help those less fortunate and in need. My goal is to attend university and study computer engineering. Computer engineering is an incredible career choice for someone who wants to change the world. Computers have changed the world in many ways. They have made it easier for us to communicate and do many of the everyday things that we must do to keep our lives in order. Computer engineers also perform a variety of other important tasks, from developing and improving wireless networks to allow for communication across the world, to the creation of operating systems powered by new hardware and high-level research that expands the boundaries of computer science and computer engineering. I’m from Ethiopia. In Ethiopia there is no well-organized science and technology information source or system. Technology could be uplifting to Ethiopia in many ways through farming, transportation and education. Ethiopia hopes to accelerate its development as a nation with the implementation of technology in education. Going to school for computer engineering could help me and my country in many ways. Computer engineering is what I’ve been wanting to do as a career since I was young. I excel at math and I’m an independent thinker. Being an independent thinker helps me figure out things myself and get better results due to my critical thinking skills. I came to the United States when I was 15 years old. All of my family is in Ethiopia. My family and I decided to move to the United States for better opportunities such as education, career opportunities, and better living conditions. I want to talk to my family back home every day, but I’m not able to talk to them because of the internet connection problems throughout the country and especially in my town of Addis Abeba. I want to create positive change and inspire future innovations within Ethiopia. My hope is to get broadband technology to help developing countries like Ethiopia to be in a better place with technology, help families and communities communicate with others worldwide and bring good-paying jobs to these people as necessary infrastructure is built.

Obstacle I faced was coming to the United States from Africa and starting a new life. At first it was very hard because everything was new to me. Being African and not knowing anything was very hard for me. I was very honest and open about myself and where I came from, because if they want to be my friends, I want them to know me for who I am. Language wasn’t really a problem to me. Even though English is not my first language I spoke and understood English very well. When I was in Ethiopia I was going to an international school, and English was the most spoken language. I had an accent, but it went away after a few months. My experience growing up will help me in the future. How I was treated by my peers at these two schools helps me face the future in a different way and shaped my views to embrace other people and other cultures
