Mathematics is one of those subjects that people seem to either love it or hate it. As the concepts become more abstract, many students become disenchanted with it. I am different than most students. I love math because it is useful, it is consistent, and it is used worldwide. Math is that rare subject that every person uses. We use geometry to describe our world. We use concepts like area, length, width, volume, and Pythagorean theorem when building and measuring. We use financial math and exponential equations to balance checkbooks and find the best interest rate on loans and investments. We use proportions and algebra when determining doses of medicine. We use algebra extensively to find a missing quantity in all the sciences. Sports and insurance use statistics for determining records and insurance rates. We measure our world in units of time, distance, latitude, and longitude. The vast expanse of our galaxy is explained using math. Everybody uses math every day. It is the only subject with such vastness. Math is also consistent. You can depend on calculations. If you work long enough, you can find the answer because there is no subjective interpretation. Concepts that were true 4000 years ago, like counting, are still true today. Every culture uses some kind of counting principal, whether it be keeping up with the number of cows a rancher has or how much money is in a toddler’s piggy bank. Mathematics is also vertical building and that makes it easier. We learn to measure the length of a piece of string for perimeter, which then turns into area and we measure the number of blocks, and finally it becomes 3 dimensional and we find volume. Finally, math is used worldwide. It overcomes the language barriers encountered in most disciplines. Math is used to validate and support claims, discoveries, and conjectures. People may make any claim they choose in any discipline. To prove these claims, however, mathematics is used extensively. The results of a study in one country can be shared in another country because mathematics is the same worldwide. I appreciate mathematics. It is the only subject that doesn’t really change. The way it is taught may change but the concepts remain the same. Math is useful in understanding our world. It is consistent and instead of changing year to year, we just build on what we already know. Finally, mathematics is the only language “spoken” worldwide. That makes it the most useful discipline in the world.

While the transition to college can be difficult, most students eventually adjust to their surroundings. As a campus mental health provider, I compiled seven tips to help you make a smooth transition to college and maintain balance and well-being throughout your time as a student. 1. Get Enough Sleep It often feels as though there aren't enough hours in the day for college students to do everything they want to do, whether that's going to class, studying, socializing, working, playing sports, or participating in extracurriculars. In this atmosphere of constant activity, sleep is typically the first thing to go. In college, it's almost a badge of honor to pull an all-nighter. In the end, though, it doesn't matter how cool it might be or how many more hours you could spend studying by staying awake — getting enough sleep is critical to your health and well-being, not to mention your grades. The best way to improve your sleep is to practice better sleep hygiene. Here are some practical tips to help you get a better night's sleep: Go to sleep and wake up at the same times every day Don't drink caffeine too late at night Avoid napping during the day Use your bed only for sleeping 2. Exercise Regularly Exercise can help with your sleep and improve your overall fitness. Students' relationships with exercise can vary. Some exercise to relieve stress and prioritize fitting it in even when they're busy, whereas others let it be one of the first things to drop off when they start to feel overwhelmed. If you're in the first category, be sure you're using exercise as a healthy coping mechanism and that you're not overexercising to the point of hurting yourself or losing too much weight. If you belong to the latter category, I recommend finding ways to incorporate exercise into your everyday routine, even if it's just a brisk walk around campus.

Climate change is the greatest environmental challenge the world has ever faced, but we can do something about it. We are the last generation that can stop devastating climate change. We have the knowledge and the tools – we just need politicians to lead the way.We know climate change is happening, and we know that it is caused by our actions. The Earth's atmosphere is warming, faster than it probably ever has. In some cases weather patterns, climates and natural environments are changing quicker than wildlife or people can adapt. So many of the world's biggest challenges, from poverty to wildlife extinction, are made more difficult by climate change. And things will get worse if we do nothing. But we can do something about it. We have the knowledge and the technology to reduce our impact on the climate, and ease the pressures on the world's most vulnerable places, people and wildlife. We just need to make it happen. Global temperatures have been rising for over a century, speeding up in the last few years, and are now the highest on record. This causes negative impacts such as the melting of Arctic sea-ice, prolonged heat-waves and rising sea-levels. We know why. We release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels for energy, farming, and destroying forests. These carbon emissions are causing the greenhouse effect, trapping heat and making the Earth warmer, faster than could happen naturally. We know what needs to be done about it. We need to cut man-made greenhouse gas emissions drastically, phase out fossil fuels and move to renewable energy. We need to use less energy and be more efficient in the energy that we do use, and we need to tackle deforestation and eat less meat. Keep fossil fuels in the ground. Fossil fuels include coal, oil and gas – and the more that are extracted and burned, the worse climate change will get. All countries need to move their economies away from fossil fuels as soon as possible. Invest in renewable energy. Changing our main energy sources to clean and renewable energy is the best way to stop using fossil fuels. These include technologies like solar, wind, wave, tidal and geothermal power. Switch to sustainable transport. Petrol and diesel vehicles, planes and ships use fossil fuels. Reducing car use, switching to electric vehicles and minimising plane travel will not only help stop climate change, it will reduce air pollution too. Help us keep our homes cosy. Homes shouldn’t be draughty and cold – it’s a waste of money, and miserable in the winter. The government can help households heat our homes in a green way – such as by insulating walls and roofs and switching away from oil or gas boilers to heat pumps. Improve farming and encourage vegan diets. One of the best ways for individuals to help stop climate change is by reducing their meat and dairy consumption, or by going fully vegan. Businesses and food retailers can improve farming practices and provide more plant-based products to help people make the shift.

My mom is my biggest inspiration because she always puts the needs of others above herself. Even though she’s been a well-respected school psychologist for nearly 30 years, growing up my mom made us homemade meals every night, managed to get my brother and I to every practice on time, and still made time to help us with homework and read with us before bedtime. I don’t know how she managed to do it all but I’m eternally grateful. She’s shown me that you don’t have to compromise when it comes to putting your career first and being a great mom.

My name is Liberty Weatheread and I am a Senior at North Hopkins ISD. I plan to become an accountant for a large agricultural business, but this wasn’t always what I had in mind. When thinking about my future, I always saw myself in some sort of corporate office, perhaps as an executive assistant or a loan officer at a bank. My father works in the finance office for a car dealership and my mother works at a call center. I assumed I would follow a similar, albeit boring, path in life. In my sophomore year of high school, everything changed. My math teacher inspired me in ways I could have never imagined. She showed me how math, a subject i have always been quite good at, and agriculture , the career i knew i wanted to be in, could be put together. She made me want to be a better student in all of my classes, and she helped me see the value of education. I decided then that I wanted to be a CPA. My parents are unfortunately not able to contribute much toward my college expenses. I have earned a tuition scholarship based on my ACT score, but I still need additional funding for books and supplies. Economic majors have particularly high book costs because we have to purchase multiple books for each class. With the help of this scholarship, I could afford to continue my degree and become an accountant.

From the time she was born, it seemed that all the odds were stacked against me. I grew up with a mom who had an addiction to substances, I took on the role of caring for my younger siblings. Becoming overwhelmed with all the responsibility, becomes easy. But the pain, that need for support, didn’t go unnoticed when I ran into a friend from high school. I’ve broken several generational curses. The universe has its ways of making sure I break them all so one day my daughter can have a safe, stable, healthy and happy life For parents achieving sobriety and working to reunify with their children, a simple donation of some snacks or cleaning supplies can go a long way.

Maybe it's no accident that "dog" is "God" spelled backwards. Dogs offer unconditional love, usually much more than we deserve, and all we have to do is accept the gift. Dogs don't care if we're rich, smart, or popular. They care only that we get through this life reassured that love is out there for each of us. If you've ever owned a dog, you'll relate to these true stories contributed by real-life dog owners, each recounting a special canine bond. In tough and troubled times, it's often the family dog that holds our lives together.

If the thought of standing on a factory floor, sitting behind a desk, or working in the service industry is unappealing, a Trades career offers a good alternative. When you work in the Trades, you perform physical tasks that can change from job-to-job and day-to-day. You’re up and active and need to be in pretty good shape. While each day may follow a similar schedule, your work location and duties can vary. For example, if you work in HVAC, you could travel to different homes, commercial buildings, or constructions sites for assignments. You may install an AC system one day and perform basic maintenance the next day. If you work as a welder, you might be on a construction site, a pipeline in the heart of Alaska, or at manufacturing plant.

The greatest driving force in my life is to succeed and be self sufficient. Having to depend on others is not the way I choose to live my life . My mother , who has been through such trauma , became addicted to narcotics and I chose then and there to be the person everyone can count on. It’s not her fault, even though she paid a hefty price . Having been through 19 surgeries, I understand why it happened. The driving force in my life is to be self sustaining and finish my education. Even though bad things happen, the one person I can depend on is me. I choose to staying on the right path . I choose to make my education priority and make sure my family is taken care of . I make choices and they don’t always work out . But sometimes they do . I want the world to benefit from my presence on this earth. I want to make a difference and touch people . I love community service volunteers and making my world a better place. The only change we can bring about is the one we create ourselves.

All across the world, girls and women are still much more likely to never get into a classroom than men and boys despite all efforts and the tremendous progress that was made over the past few decades. Geographical isolation, poverty, minority status, early marriage and pregnancy, disability, gender-related violence, and traditionally developed attitudes regarding the role and status of women are the most important obstacles that prevent girls and women to exercise their legitimate right to receive and complete their education and benefit to their fullest extent. There was a time when all women were expected to learn skills like sewing, cooking, and childcare. Even today, women are often denigrated if they try to learn skills like automotive or electronic repair. On the other hand, a man who spends his free time sewing may be considered effeminate. Whatever skills you want to gain, find the right teacher or class, and get to work. You might find that it's harder than you thought. On the other hand, you might just find your new vocation.

Technology affects almost every aspect of 21st century life, from transport efficiency and safety, to access to food and healthcare, socialization and productivity. The power of the internet has enabled global communities to form and ideas and resources to be shared more easily. However, the overuse of some technology has been linked to a decline in mental health, increased social division and privacy concerns. We take technology for granted every day – even when it’s delivering us the latest news in an instant, making our cappuccino, or connecting us with a loved one halfway across the country (or even the world).
