Bold Art Matters Scholarship
My favorite piece of art is "The Creator" by Micheal Fishel. I have a giant poster of it hanging on my bedroom wall. I love it because it has such incredible detail and celebrates the oneness of life, death, and every conceivable thing in between. The meticulous detail and insane creativity are near super-human, you could stare at it for hours, maybe days, and still discover little features. Everyone in the vibrant and vivacious landscape looks so free and united. In this spectacular fantasy land, all sorts of people and creatures interact peacefully, living together but separately. The world provides for the people with a bountiful cornucopia, water, trees, fire. Human civilization, nature, religion, and fantasy clash together. I appreciate Fishel's inclusion of history as well as myths, wizards, the Lincoln Memorial, flying space jellyfish, a rocket ship blasting off, Nessie, and pyramids all co-existing. The way Fishel juxtaposes life and death is beautiful, a boy looks at his reflection and is shocked to see an old man, ghosts splash in the water with the living, a giant embryo sits next to a massive skull. I think it all puts life into perspective and makes you contemplate your place in the world and even the universe.
Hobbies Matter
One of my favorite hobbies out of the many arts I've dabbled in is needle felting. It's the process of taking felt roving and stabbing it with barbed needles to form 3D shapes. No matter how many times I stab the needle right through my leather glove into my finger, I still find ways to love it. It has countless uses, from embellishing my crochet pieces, to making quick gifts, to simply manifesting something from my head right into my hand. I first heard about the craft on Reddit, and I thought it looked interesting, you could imagine my delight when I got a needle felting kit for my birthday, I started right away and picked it up fast, now it's become one of my favorite hobbies. I think it's also important to note that the quick stabbing motions are great for taking out pesky pent-up anger, and the repetitive action of turning and jabbing is tranquilizing. I have created many unique items: characters I come up with, little keychains, ornaments, earrings, details on my crocheted amigurumi pieces, and more. Not only are the things I make unique, but the hobby itself is relatively unheard of, and I think more people should enjoy it. Just last night I stabbed together a little flower man wearing some jeans. Some of my favorite things that I've made are frogs with yellow and purple spots and big bulging eyes, a little mushroom man that I stuck on a magnet, some frog earrings (if you haven't been able to tell, I love frogs), a baby elephant shooting hearts out of her trunk, and a watermelon bunny, the fur was red with tiny black dots and he wore a green striped bow tie that looked like watermelon rind. Needle felting is simple, easy, and inexpensive, the hardest part of it all is being patient, and I hope more people start exploring it because it truly is such a joy.
Pride Palace LGBTQ+ Scholarship
I’m proud to be bisexual because I see so much strength and perseverance in the bi community. I’m not confused, who I love doesn’t define me. I am not half gay or half straight, I’m bi, I’m me, and I am proud.

Jamie Hewlett is an English illustrator, you may know him as the artist for Tank Girl and Gorillaz. I love his work because it’s just the right amount of political, his style so simple yet so memorable, his art is vibrant and lively, and he’s not afraid to push the envelope. He’s had an extremely versatile career, and his struggles as a professional artist in the modern world are comically relatable.
