As of the beginning of my second semester senior year, I have a cumulative weighted GPA of 4.8 and an unweighted cumulative GPA of 3.98. I have taken 10 AP classes throughout the course of high school and have been in all honors classes since the 10th grade. My junior year of high school I was awarded the Marian Greenblatt award of excellence in social studies which is presented to only one student in the school. I am in the National Honors Society, as well as the English Spanish, Math and Engineering Honors Societies. Outside of the classroom, I have played varsity soccer, varsity basketball and lacrosse for my high school, in addition to playing club soccer and church basketball. As much I take pride in my school work and sports, I am also driven to help others. Last summer I volunteered at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, MD. I worked in the intensive care unit and helped people who had been through traumatic experiences, and dedicated my time to helping them improve their condition. I would like to serve my community in the future through a career in medicine. I shadowed an oncologist this summer and witnessed that one needs to have incredible compassion and willingness to help others. I believe I have the passion to help others and lead by example. I served my class as Vice President for three years. Being in this leadership role, I have helped coordinate mulch sales, created and directed the class ‘skit’ for homecoming, and was on the board to add an additional dance to our school, the ‘Glow’ dance. Besides these fundraising events, I helped to establish a community event called U-nite. U-nite was created out the of need to do something raise awareness to address several teen suicides in our community. These tragedies prompted us to focus on kindness and anti-bullying, so we created this event, meeting in a local park, to have students speak kind words to each other and treat each other with kindness and care. We used social media to promote the event, and it was well attended. It was my responsibility to help students meet each other and work to finding ways for them to work together in class and at various school events, as well as participate in this event. I am very proud to have co-founded Free the Slaves club, an international non-profit organization that helps create a better understanding of modern day-slavery and raise money to prevent trafficking. One of the events we did was to hold a screening of the film “Sold” last year at school. The producer of the movie and police officers were there to answer questions. “Sold” told the dangers of sex trafficking and how to respond if human trafficking is suspected. I have also held many religious leadership positions throughout high school through my church in G.O.Y.A (Greek Orthodox Youth of America. I was responsible for planning events for children ages 5-18. I have constantly encouraged our youth to be involved whether it’s basketball, youth nights, or Sights and Sounds, an artistic and musical event. We Greek dance together every week for two hours and this provides us with freedom to express our culture and take pride in it.
