Bio

Growing up, my dad was a US Marine. My twin sister and I were born in Fredericksburg, VA and by the time we were 3 years old we had already lived in two different states and three different houses. My dad’s job meant that our family would to move to a new military base every three to four years. I started school in Twenty-nine Palms, CA and a year later my family moved across the country to Camp Lejeune, NC. We spent four years at Camp Lejeune, before moving to Iowa half-way through my fourth-grade year. By the time we moved to Iowa, I had attended 4 different schools in 5 years. These experiences have shaped my character. The responsibility pillar of Character Counts means that you persevere, are self-disciplined, accountable for your words, actions and attitudes, and choose a positive attitude. Each time we moved, I went to a new school and had the opportunity to develop the skill of responsibility. Rachel Wolchin state “if we were meant to stay in one place, we’d have roots instead of feet.” Moving is hard and can be stressful. As a kid, it is even harder. It would have been easy to be the shy, new kid each time. I had to have a positive attitude about the moves and look at them as an opportunity. Each move was an opportunity to meet new friends and try new things. It was hard saying good-bye to old friends, learning the ins and outs of a new school, and staying on top of my schoolwork, but this taught me to be open to change and be self-disciplined. I feel that I developed this character skill and will help me be successful when I go to college!

Law enforcement officers play a crucial role in society, acting as guardians of public safety and upholders of justice. The role of a law enforcement officer encompasses more than just enforcing laws; it requires integrity, compassion, and a deep commitment to serving the community. Firstly, integrity is fundamental to the role of a law enforcement officer. Upholding the law impartially and ethically, regardless of personal biases or external pressures, is essential to maintaining public trust. Integrity ensures that officers are seen as fair and reliable authorities who can be counted on to protect and serve without prejudice. Secondly, compassion is equally important. Police officers often encounter individuals in distressing situations, whether victims of crime or those in need of assistance. A compassionate officer listens empathetically, providing support and reassurance while handling each situation with sensitivity. Compassion fosters positive interactions and helps build bridges between law enforcement and the community. Furthermore, a good law enforcement officer must possess strong communication skills. Effective communication is key to de-escalating conflicts, gaining cooperation from witnesses and suspects, and building relationships within the community. By communicating clearly and respectfully, officers can prevent misunderstandings and promote cooperation, which is vital for maintaining public safety. Beyond individual qualities, the impact of law enforcement officers on the community is profound. They serve as role models, especially for young people, demonstrating the importance of lawfulness and respect for others. By enforcing laws consistently and fairly, officers contribute to a sense of security and order that allows communities to thrive. Moreover, law enforcement officers play a critical role in crime prevention. Through proactive patrolling, investigating crimes, and apprehending suspects, officers deter criminal activity and help maintain peace. Their presence alone often serves as a deterrent, reducing the likelihood of crime in neighborhoods. In addition to law enforcement duties, officers frequently engage in community outreach efforts. They participate in events, educate the public on safety measures, and collaborate with local organizations to address community concerns. These initiatives not only strengthen community relations but also empower residents to play an active role in their own safety and well-being. The impact of law enforcement officers extends beyond crime control to include crisis intervention and support during emergencies. They are often first responders in emergencies such as accidents, natural disasters, or medical crises, providing critical assistance until specialized help arrives. Their quick response and decisive actions can save lives and mitigate the impact of unforeseen events on the community. In conclusion, being a good law enforcement officer requires a combination of integrity, compassion, communication skills, and a dedication to public service. Officers who embody these qualities positively impact their communities by promoting safety, upholding justice, and fostering trust and cooperation among residents. Their presence not only deters crime but also contributes to the overall well-being and resilience of society. As such, law enforcement officers are integral to the fabric of communities, ensuring that they remain safe, secure, and supportive environments for all who live and work within them.
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
I plan to major in Criminal Justice/Criminology at Simpson College. My educational and professional goals are to earn a degree in criminology/criminal justice and pursue a career in law enforcement as a criminal investigator. There are a multitude of reasons these fields excite me. To start with, a career in criminology offers a unique opportunity to blend scientific inquiry with the pursuit of justice. This career path requires a keen analytical mind, a meticulous attention to detail, and a steadfast commitment to ethical principles. These fields are not for the faint of heart. They often involve confronting the darker aspects of human nature and dealing with situations that can be emotionally challenging. However, it is this very challenge that makes the field of criminology and forensic science so intriguing to me. For me though, it is not just the technical aspects of criminology and forensic science that are appealing to me. I have a personal interest and connection to this field. Growing up, I had the honor and pleasure of witnessing my father serve his country. He served in the United States Marine Corps for 21 years as a Military Police Officer and Criminal Investigator. For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to follow in his footsteps and serve our community and country. Witnessing how he was able to help members of our community resolve problems and bring closure to painful events was inspiring to say the least. Then I had the opportunity to take a Criminal Investigations class my junior year of high school, and that solidified my plans to pursue a degree in criminal science. this career path requires teamwork and my experience playing soccer and running cross-country have prepared me for this. Playing a team sport has helped me understand how to work with others to achieve a common goal. I have learned what my areas of strength are and how they compliment my teammates’ strengths. While scoring goals and winning games is the aim of the sport, the real growth happens in the losses. We win as a team and we lose as a team, and success is when we are able to pick ourselves up and learn from the loss; determined to do better in the next game. These lessons will help me no matter what my career path I take. In addition, my natural skills, strengths and interests align with careers in this field. These fields offer a unique blend of intellectual challenge, societal impact, and the excitement of constant discovery. I have a natural curiosity about human behavior, a passion for science, and a deep-seated desire to contribute to the greater good. As society evolves and technology advances, the roles of criminologists and forensic scientists will only grow in importance, making now an exciting time to enter the field. This career is exciting to me because it offers me the the chance to serve my community and leverage my strengths and passions.
