Bold PointsBio
My name is Liam and I am a senior in high school. I am in the top 5% of my graduating class, have a 4.9 weighted GPA, a 1300 SAT score, and am involved in several clubs and activities. I have also taken honors, AP, and dual enrollment courses throughout high school. I am a member of the National Honors Society, National Beta Club, National Society of High School Scholars, National Spanish Honors Society, Key Club, National English Honors Society, and I plan to join others. I have earned several awards throughout high school, including academic excellence in AP Biology, marketing, and sports marketing, and AP Scholar. On top of all this, I have worked and taken care of responsibilities in a low-income household with two siblings during the school year. In my free time, I enjoy going to the gym, learning a new language, playing video games, and participating in extracurriculars. After high school, I plan to enroll in a four-year college in South Carolina to major in finance.

NYT Connections Fan Scholarship
1) Unhealthy screentime amount: The words "screen", "socials", "addiction", and "wasted" can be used in this category to spread awareness of the exponential increase in the average person's screentime. Words like "addiction" and "wasted" can invoke uneasiness and worry in people, hence making them more likely to reduce their screen time.
2) Books: Not enough people read books these days, which is why a category with the words "paper", "glasses", "brainpower", and "knowledge" could remind people that they should swap scrolling through social media for reading books. Being a puzzle game website, the New York Times could implement this to increase its player base's vocabulary, hence creating a smarter, more well-spoken community. It would also increase the number of people interested in reading news articles from the NY Times.
3) Money: The words "check", "green", "grind", and "stress" can be used in this category to highlight the largest concern of today's world—money. Unfortunately, many individuals and families cannot afford basic needs let alone entertainment. Since the NY Times is a free website that supplies entertainment through games and news articles, money isn't a concern to its readers.
4) Politics: "Debate", "red", "blue", and "parties" can be used to describe politics—a popular topic in the NY Times. Politics is also one of the most talked about topics on the planet, which is why the thought of politics will resonate with the majority of people across the globe.
Each of these categories has a meaning for both the NY Times and the general population. There is also room for confusion from the players, such as with the colors and words such as "addiction" and "stress".
LeBron James Fan Scholarship
As I was sitting there in class one day, thinking about the "GOAT" of basketball, I realized how everyone could apply LeBron's mindset to their everyday lives. LeBron's perspective on what makes a winner a winner resonates with me. His mindset pushes me to go all out and not be afraid to fail. I've been a big fan of LeBron James for a few years, and it all started when I watched a motivational video from him. In the video, LeBron enforces the mindset that he shows up to every practice and every game like it's his last. He says that his goal is to get better and improve every day. Once I started approaching most activities in my life with LeBron's mindset, I improved. The improvement I've seen ever since I watched that video is the reason I'm a fan of LeBron James.
I think LeBron James is the "GOAT", or greatest of all time because he has revolutionized a generation of ambitious kids and teens on a level that is so much larger than Michael Jordan. Jordan's legacy was seen through television and movies, but LeBron's has been seen on social media. To me, the greatest of all time is someone whose performance is so good that it's motivational to the general population and whose mindset can be applied to almost anything.
Learner Math Lover Scholarship
The reason I love math is because it is different from any other subject. Math allows you to think outside the box, similar to history and language arts, while also having a definite answer, similar to science.
Additionally, I love math because the subject requires training and exercise of the brain, similar to exercise needed to become stronger physically. One can't just jump straight into calculus, they first have to learn basic math, then algebra, then trigonometry, and so on. Math is like a mountain that many try to climb, with each step yielding an increasingly difficult equation.
Another reason I love math so much is because of the everyday applications it is used in. Most students ask "When will I ever need this?". The truth is that math is used in everyday life, from planning to budgeting to even fun hobbies such as video games. The reason so many students quit after pre-calculus in high school is that they feel overwhelmed and stressed out about how difficult it can get. To me, that's the fun part. Knowing that I have progressed in my knowledge of mathematics gives me a sense of accomplishment.
The final reason I love math is that it is a universal language. This statement may sound cliche, but it's the truth. Math can bring students from all across the world to learn something new and improve their problem-solving skills. Two times two in the US is the same as two times two in Japan. With math, there is no language barrier in numerical equations.
