My name is Liam Burney. I come from a small town in Arkansas called Winslow. My mom makes enough to keep food on the table, clothes on our backs, and a roof over our head (I have 6 siblings and 2 parents, 9 of us in total). We never could afford a Catholic education up until we were approached by a priest who is very close to my family. He told us that if we wanted to, we had the opportunity to attend a Catholic high school free of charge. I am a 3-time All-State XC runner, a one-time All-Conference runner, and a 4-time Team State XC Champion. During my Track season I managed to be a part of a Team Indoor Track Championship victory, winning the 4x800 relay. For Outdoor Track I have been All-Conference, and a part of 1 team Championship victory.
I have, throughout all my four years at Ozark Catholic Academy (OCA), maintained a 4.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. I have gone through AP courses and have (and still am) taking college courses. I am also apart of NHS. I am a part of MANY clubs, all of which I attend regularly and have leadership in. My proudest achievement is becoming the Head Spiritual Leader at OCA. Being in this position I lead different spiritual experiences like bible study, Rosary, Visio Divina, Chaplet of Divine Mercy, Lectio Divina, etc.
After my time at OCA I plan on going to Benedictine College (BC) in Atchison Kansas. The only way that I will be able to go is if I get enough scholarship to pay for it, otherwise it really won't be feasible. It is extremely expensive to go to BC, and any amount of scholarship helps A LOT.
The biggest challenge I have ever faced was maintaining my faith throughout my time in school. Like I said before I attended public school for most of my life. This experience was by no means spiritually uplifting. There was no opportunity to attend mass or to go to a chapel in my free time. The only way I knew to overcome it then was to push through the darkness and hold on to my beliefs with unrelenting strength. No matter how many times I got joked about because of what I believed I stayed quiet and kept on pushing. I finally, completely overcame it when I received the news that I would finally be able to go to a Catholic School. This was a huge triumph. From then on, I was able to openly talk about the faith, attend daily mass, GO TO CONFESSION, visit Jesus in the school's chapel, etc. The Catholic faith was weaved into every bit of my classes. whether we were talking about the history of the church or just starting my geometry class with prayer, my faith was included in each course that I took. I was able to interact with like-minded people who shared my beliefs and my faith. I was finally where I belonged.
More than anything I would love to continue my Catholic education. I know that I am still young and that my brain has a lot more developing to do. I want this development to take place in a Catholic environment that will strengthen my faith and help me to grow closer to my Father in Heaven. I pray that the decision you make ultimately follows God's will. I pray also for those donating this scholarship money, Jesus says that whatever you do to the least of my brethren you do unto me. GOD BLESS YOU!

Throughout my junior high years, I attended West Fork Public School. The Burney name was very well known. Academically we build a reputation that was unmatched and my oldest brother paved the way to our athletic reputation. He pushed the West Fork team to become XC State Champs, and all of those on the team can attest to this.
His example of Athletic excellence really drove me to push myself even harder in my running career. I am a 3-time All-State Cross Country runner, a one-time All-Conference runner, and a 4-time Team State Cross Country Champion (meaning that I was a part of the 4 wins).
