The person who has had the biggest impact on my life is my grandmother, the woman who raised me and shaped my values, my mindset, and my determination to succeed. Growing up in a low-income, rural neighborhood, life often felt limited by circumstance, but she never allowed me to believe that my environment defined my future. She taught me strength through her actions—through the way she kept going despite hardship, through the way she cared for me even when she had little for herself, and through the quiet resilience she carried every single day. She didn’t have access to many opportunities, but she made sure I understood that I still could.
The event that most dramatically impacted my life was losing her. She passed away in an elderly home because she couldn’t afford proper housing or care, and she wasn’t treated the way she truly deserved. Watching someone who sacrificed so much face that reality changed me deeply. It forced me to confront the truth about how financial hardship can affect a person’s dignity, health, and quality of life. That moment didn’t just bring grief—it brought clarity. I realized I didn’t just want success; I needed it. Not for status or recognition, but for stability, peace, and the ability to protect the people I love from the struggles she endured.
Her passing became a turning point that reshaped how I approach my future. At only 17 years old and already a college sophomore, I understand that my journey is different from most. As a first-generation college student, I don’t have a roadmap or family tradition to follow, which means every step I take is one I have to figure out myself. It’s challenging, and at times overwhelming, but her life reminds me why I can’t give up. I carry her lessons with me into every class, every decision, and every goal I set. She taught me that perseverance isn’t optional—it’s necessary.
Because of her, I am determined to build a life that reflects everything she hoped for me. I want financial stability, not just for myself, but so that future generations in my family never have to experience the same limitations. I want to succeed in a way that honors her memory and proves that her efforts in raising me were not in vain. Most of all, I want to live a life where I can create opportunities instead of waiting for them, and where I can help others rise alongside me.
My grandmother’s influence did not end with her life; it lives on in my ambition, my discipline, and my refusal to settle. She shaped who I am, and losing her shaped who I am becoming. Together, her love and her loss have become the foundation of my drive, giving me both the reason and the courage to keep moving forward toward a future she always believed I could reach.
Harvest Scholarship for Women Dreamers
My “Pie in the Sky” dream is peace and financial freedom—two things that have always felt distant from the life I was born into. Growing up in a low-income family in a rural neighborhood, stability wasn’t something I saw often. Financial freedom felt as impossible as spotting a bright red dragon flying across the sky—beautiful to imagine, but unrealistic to expect. Still, that vision lives in my mind, and instead of dismissing it, I’ve chosen to chase it. That dream is what pushes me to keep going when things feel overwhelming, uncertain, or unfair.
What truly ignited this dream was my grandmother, who raised me. She was strong, loving, and did the best she could with what she had, but life never gave her the opportunities she deserved. She recently passed away in an elderly home because she couldn’t afford proper housing or care, and she wasn’t treated the way she should have been. Losing her hurt deeply, but it also shifted something inside me. It showed me how harsh life can be when you don’t have financial stability, and it made me realize that I don’t just want a different life—I need one. I want a future where I can live peacefully, support myself, care for the people I love, and never be forced into situations because of money.
At 17 years old and already a college sophomore, I understand that my path isn’t typical. Being a first-generation college student means I don’t have a blueprint to follow. I’m learning as I go—how to navigate college, how to plan for a career, how to build a life that looks different from what I grew up seeing. It’s hard, and sometimes it feels like I’m carrying more pressure than someone my age should. But I remind myself that pressure can either break you or build you, and I choose to let it build me. I’m not just doing this for myself—I’m doing it for my future family, for the generations that will come after me, and for the people in my community who need someone to prove that more is possible.
To reach this dream, I know it will take discipline, education, and persistence. I plan to take full advantage of every opportunity college offers—internships, mentorships, leadership experiences, and real-world learning. I want to master my field, grow professionally, and develop financial knowledge so I can create stability that lasts. I’m also committed to personal growth, because success isn’t just about money—it’s about wisdom, resilience, and character.
My dream may feel far away, but it no longer feels impossible. Every class I pass, every challenge I overcome, and every lesson I learn brings me closer. Peace and financial freedom are not fantasies anymore—they’re goals. And I am determined to reach them, no matter how far I have to climb.

My name is Lia Holloway, I’m a highly motivated student who excels academically. At the age of 15, I’ve already established myself as an advocate for my community while simultaneously delving into entrepreneurship with remarkable success. Motivated by a strong sense of purpose and ambition, I consistently strive to make a meaningful impact in everything that I do.
However, I wasn’t always as confident in myself or work ethic. During my formative years, carrying the weight of excess pounds took a toll on my mental well-being. The constant struggle to fit into societal norms and the relentless pressure to conform to a certain physical ideal left me feeling inadequate and unworthy. The taunts and judgment from peers only served to deepen the wounds on my self-esteem, leaving me feeling isolated and disconnected. Unconsciously, I internalized the external criticism, creating a distorted self-image that fueled self-doubt and anxiety. The weight on my body became synonymous with the weight on my mind, weighing me down with a sense of shame and despair. It seemed as though my self-worth was tied solely to the numbers on a scale, perpetuating a vicious cycle of self-criticism and negative self-talk. The impact of being overweight at such a tender age went far beyond physical appearance; it infiltrated and eroded the very core of my mental health, leaving me yearning for acceptance and struggling to find my own identity amidst the noise of societal expectations.
With the help of my closest friends, family and many self-help books I was able to gain my self-confidence. I now look at myself in the mirror and know that I am worthy, I am beautiful in my own skin. With this gain of confidence it has propelled me into a journey of becoming an advocate for change in my community.
One of my primary objectives is to spark transformative and moving discussions through public speaking and active participation in various events. By initiating these conversations, I aim to inspire innovative ideas that can bring about significant changes on both local and global scales. Through my work, I hope to introduce fresh perspectives that will serve as a motivation for positive transformations within our society.
Despite the challenges we face, I have made it my mission to make a difference through community service. I firmly believe in the incredible impact that collective action can have, and I am dedicated to serving others in any way I can. I’ll accomplish this by providing assistance and support to those in need, not only will I contribute to their well-being, but it has also provided me personal growth and allowed myself to gain a broader perspective of the world around me.
Many of my personal experiences, such as local food drives, tutoring programs, volunteering at shelters and community centers have not only deepened my empathy for individuals from diverse background, but has also taught me valuable lessons about the power of compassion and solidarity. Furthermore, my entrepreneurial endeavors are not mere dreams, but tangible realities brought to life through careful planning and strategic implementation. This serves as a testament to my unwavering dedication to effecting change in the world around me. With each accomplishment fueling my drive further, there is no limit to what I can and will achieve on this journey of endless possibilities.
