Bio

Hi, I’m Lyle Gray, a student at Lincoln College of Technology with a passion for hands-on work, especially in cars and electronics. Outside of my studies, I love working out, diving into comics (webtoons, manga, manhwa, and manhua), and gaming. My immediate goal is to graduate from Lincoln Tech as an advanced beginner mechanic, and I aspire to become a master mechanic at Toyota. This scholarship would be a huge help, as it would ease the financial burden on my mother and me. I’m really grateful for the opportunity to be considered.

I am applying for this scholarship because it represents a crucial opportunity to continue my education and achieve my career goals. After spending two years at a traditional college, I realized that it wasn’t the right fit for me, both academically and financially. Unfortunately, this realization came after I had already accumulated a significant amount of debt. Transitioning to a career as an auto mechanic is not only a better match for my skills and interests but also a pathway to financial stability. This scholarship would alleviate some of the financial burden that I carry, allowing me to focus on acquiring the skills I need to excel in my chosen field. My interest in becoming an auto mechanic began after I purchased my first car. Like many first-time car owners, I quickly discovered how expensive it is to maintain a vehicle. This experience sparked a desire in me to learn more about how cars work and how to fix them myself. I realized that having the ability to repair and maintain vehicles is an invaluable skill, one that not only saves money but also provides a sense of independence and self-sufficiency. This newfound passion led me to dream of turning my car into a “sleeper”—a car that appears ordinary on the outside but is equipped with high-performance parts under the hood. The idea of creating something extraordinary from the ordinary is a challenge that excites me, and it’s a perfect metaphor for my career aspirations. In the future, I plan to make a significant impact in the automotive industry by building my own repair shop. My goal is to create a business that is built on a foundation of integrity and trust. I believe that trust is the cornerstone of any successful relationship, whether it’s personal or professional. Unfortunately, many people feel that they cannot trust their mechanic, fearing overcharges or unnecessary repairs. I want to change that perception by offering honest and transparent services at reasonable prices. My shop will be a place where customers can feel confident that they are being treated fairly and that their vehicles are in good hands. Beyond just running a successful business, I want to give back to the community by mentoring young people who are interested in the automotive field. I believe that sharing my knowledge and experience with the next generation of mechanics will help build a stronger, more trustworthy industry. This scholarship is not just about helping me pay for my education; it’s about investing in a future where integrity and skill go hand in hand. In conclusion, I am applying for this scholarship because it is essential for me to achieve my goals and to make a positive impact in the world. My passion for cars and commitment to honesty and fair pricing will drive me to become an auto mechanic who is not only skilled but also trusted and respected by the community. This scholarship will allow me to continue my education, reduce my financial burden, and ultimately help me build a career that I am proud of.

Driving under the influence (DUI) is a critical issue that affects not only those who engage in it but also their families and communities. My personal experiences with substance abuse in my family, including my father and stepdad both facing DUIs, have deepened my understanding of the severe consequences and the need for effective prevention strategies. Analyzing DUIs from moral and technical perspectives highlights the importance of addressing this issue and implementing effective solutions. The technical consequences of a DUI are immediate and impactful. Legally, those convicted face fines, license suspensions, and mandatory classes, which can create significant disruptions in their daily lives. The inability to drive affects personal freedom and complicates routine tasks such as commuting to work and fulfilling family responsibilities. Additionally, a DUI often leads to increased insurance premiums and potential damage to one’s professional and personal reputation. From a moral standpoint, driving under the influence endangers not only the driver but also everyone on the road. Impaired judgment and reaction times significantly increase the risk of accidents, potentially causing serious injuries or fatalities. This reckless behavior disregards the safety of others and reflects a lack of respect for human life. The decision to drive while impaired demonstrates a disregard for the profound consequences that can result from such actions. The effects of DUIs extend deeply into the lives of family and friends. For those close to someone with a DUI, the emotional impact can be overwhelming. Witnessing a loved one face legal trouble and the potential consequences of impaired driving creates significant stress and anxiety. More critically, the fear of potential accidents and the possibility of losing a loved one due to impaired driving adds emotional strain that is difficult to bear. In my own family, the repercussions of DUIs have been particularly challenging. Observing my father and stepdad deal with the aftermath of their actions has highlighted the broader impact on our family. The legal and financial consequences, coupled with emotional distress, underscore the importance of addressing substance abuse and preventing impaired driving. These experiences have reinforced my belief in the necessity of effective prevention strategies. Preventing DUIs involves both technical solutions and moral education. Technologically, modern tools provide effective strategies to reduce impaired driving. Ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft offer accessible and affordable alternatives to driving under the influence. These options make it easier for individuals to avoid the risks associated with impaired driving. Additionally, ignition interlock devices, which prevent a vehicle from starting if the driver is under the influence, are practical tools for preventing impaired driving. From a moral perspective, education and awareness are key to prevention. It is crucial to understand the severe consequences of driving under the influence and the impact on oneself and others. Public awareness campaigns and educational programs can help shift societal attitudes and promote responsible behavior. Encouraging the use of designated drivers and raising awareness about the risks of impaired driving are essential steps in fostering a culture of safety and responsibility. Addressing substance abuse through support systems such as counseling and rehabilitation programs can also help prevent DUIs. Open discussions about the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of making safe choices are vital in creating a supportive environment. By providing resources and support, we can help individuals make informed decisions and reduce the likelihood of impaired driving.

My name is Lyle Gray, and I am a 20-year-old African-American and Puerto Rican student at Lincoln College of Technology. Growing up on the West side of Chicago, I faced many challenges in neighborhoods where safety was a constant concern. Despite these difficulties, my parents instilled in me values of love, selflessness, and empathy, which have shaped who I am today. From a young age, I learned the importance of considering others’ feelings and treating them with the kindness and respect that I would wish for myself. This principle has guided me throughout my life and has been a driving force behind my desire to help others. Whether in everyday interactions or more structured settings, I always strive to put myself in others' shoes to understand their perspectives and respond with compassion. One of the most impactful ways I’ve applied these values is through my community involvement. During high school, I dedicated my time to volunteering at local organizations, where I helped organize events and support those in need. For example, I participated in community clean-up projects and organized fundraisers to support families facing financial difficulties. These experiences taught me the value of service and reinforced my commitment to making a positive difference in my community. Currently, as a student at Lincoln College of Technology, my goal is to become an advanced mechanic and eventually own my an auto repair shop. My ambition is to create a business that not only excels in technical skills but also prioritizes fairness and customer service. Many people in my community struggle with the high costs of auto repairs, and I want to address this issue by offering reasonable prices without compromising on quality. I believe that by providing reliable and affordable services, I can help alleviate some of the financial burdens that people face and contribute positively to the community I cherish. My trade skills will also enable me to mentor and guide others who share my passion for automotive technology. By offering workshops and training sessions, I hope to inspire and support the next generation of mechanics, particularly those from underserved backgrounds. I aim to share the knowledge and opportunities I have gained, helping others to build successful careers in the field and giving back to the community that has supported me. Receiving this scholarship would greatly alleviate the financial pressures on my family and allow me to focus more on my studies and professional development. It would be a crucial step toward achieving my goals and fulfilling my vision of creating a mechanic shop that stands out for its integrity and dedication to customer satisfaction. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to be considered for this scholarship and excited about the chance to use my skills and experiences to make a meaningful impact. Thank you for your time and consideration.
