My grandpa is the most influential person in my life. I’ve looked up to him ever since I was little. He is the type of person that everyone wants to be friends with. He would give the shirt off his back if you asked him to. He ran a business, had a full-time job, and was still able to spend time with our family. He built his house, helped build ours, worked on cars, traveled with us, went to church, and still came to all my birthdays, games, and any activity I was a part of. My grandpa recently passed away from cancer, but he has inspired me to become a firefighter. He worked in the local fire department for 30 years and was always someone who helped others. I’ve heard stories about him saving a little girl’s life and the fires he helped put out. He also volunteered in the community, and I felt like he made a real difference in people’s lives. It was at his funeral that I realized this is what I want to do with my life. Seeing all the people who showed up and hearing the stories they shared about him made me want to follow in his footsteps and help people the way he did. He showed me the importance of being someone others can rely on, and it motivated me to pursue a career where I can make a difference in people’s lives. Pursuing a higher education is important to me because it represents an opportunity to do what I love and build a strong future. I’ve seen the life my grandparents had, with my grandpa in the fire department, and that is what I want. The fire department was like a second family to them and to my mom growing up. Besides fighting fires and responding to calls, I’ve heard stories about softball games, picnics, and even seeing Santa. That sense of community is what I want for my future family—stability and an extended support system. Continuing my education will help me gain the skills, training, and discipline I need to succeed in firefighting, as well as the certifications required. This is a step toward something my family and I would be proud of, and toward becoming someone my community can rely on when I return home. Although my grandpa isn’t here with me today, I know he would be proud.
