Dr. William and Jo Sherwood Family Scholarship
I am a student who needs financial assistance. My parents already have one child attending MSU, and we have another younger sibling who will be attending college in 4 years that needs to be paid for. We are a low-income family, and do the best we can to get the things we need along with having a fun life. One morning getting ready for school in my freshman year of high school, I walked into my mother's room and she had her back turned to me and was crying. I walked up to her and asked her what was wrong, and she simply said “I don’t have the money for your lunch account”. Something as simple as school lunch, we couldn’t afford. On the way to school, I thought about that sentence for the whole duration of the 15-minute drive. My mother always pushed me to do my best growing up, and at that very moment, I understood why. I then created a goal for myself, one my mother wasn’t able to achieve during her years of deciding what she was going to accomplish in her life. Throughout my high school career, I tried my very hardest to meet my goal. I took the hard route of high school and signed up for all the AP courses, all science courses, computer courses, foreign language courses, and art courses. In the back of my mind was my mother. My mother shaped who I am just by one simple sentence. I empathize with those who aren’t fortunate enough to live a lavish lifestyle. Understanding the hardships of working parents, and their trying to provide for their children is the reason why I strive to do the best I can so I can give my children the best life possible, and not have to worry about their future. Due to my parents not having the flexibility of handing out money left and right to my sisters and me, I wasn’t able to do many things that my friends were able to do. Things are as simple as meeting up and going to the movies or dinner. Everything I have done in my academic career has been for her. All of the countless nights studying, all of the stressful classes I have taken, and all of the work I have put into myself have been for her. To say that I can potentially help my parents in the future because they had 3 children to take care of is my ultimate goal in life. This will benefit not only me but my family as well. No matter the amount that I will receive in scholarships, anything will help. Medical school is expensive, especially when attending a Big10 school.

In my community, I have done a variety of things, some include: Softball Youth Camp 2019-2023 20 Hours I worked at a youth softball camp and helped the girls work on their skills Tutoring 2019-2023 3 hours weekly I tutored a younger girl from Hemlock in math and science. Ticket-taking 2022 8 Hours I took tickets at Swan Valley Middle School for the girl’s 7th and 8th-grade volleyball. Ticket-taking 2022 8 Hours I took tickets at Swan Valley Middle School for the girl’s 7th and 8th-grade basketball. Outdoor Work 2021 4 Hours I helped rake leaves in an elderly man’s yard across my street because he was going through health problems and couldn’t do it on his own. Looking back on the past 4 years, I have been involved in a variety of things that have positively impacted my school and home. I have been involved in the NHS for the past two years, and we help out our school and community with our service to give back. I am always one to put others first and help out when one needs me. Impacting those around me is something that happens every day. I believe that what I have done for the community has helped workers and students very much. A little goes a long way. Taking tickets at games helps teachers by them not having to have to take time out of thier night when they could be grading or working on lesson plans. By tutoring, I was able to help a student-athlete pass her classes so she was able to compete in search of an athletic scholarship. By helping an elder man with his yardwork, I can't imagine the impact on him. He has major health problems so I am always able to help him with the things that he needs and he is nothing but grateful. In college, I plan to study pre-nursing. I want to continue my studies and become either a registered nurse or an anesthesiologist. This scholarship will help me in many ways. I am attending Michigan State University, and the school isn’t cheap. Any contributions from scholarships will help with the cost of college, so I can reach my goal of finishing medical school. The community would be a better place by knowing they have someone to come to. Many young girls and boys are scared to go to the doctor because they are uncomfortable and scared. I want to be able to be that person they are comfortable with and know that I care. I want to make a difference in saving lives. I want to be remembered as a healing one who is sick/injured.
