Disney Channel used to be arguably the best channel on the TV. They had the best storylines, best concepts, and the best show: Girl Meets World. I still remember watching the first episode when it aired. I was in elementary school, sitting on my couch. My parents, mostly my dad, were excited because they had watched Boy Meets World growing up, and some of their favorite characters were back on the TV. I was excited because I had been seeing the commercials for the new show for weeks. Never could I have imagined the impact that this show would have on me. There were complex conflicts of morals and interest, tuned down to my understanding, that I had never been faced with before. Mostly, the disagreements between Riley Matthews and Maya Heart. I loved Maya. She had good morals, but she was also cool. She had dreams, she loved her friends, she wasn’t afraid to bend the rules. She was exactly who I wanted to be. Of course, no elementary schooler is going to be doing the things the kids on the show were, but I was hooked anyways. Maya Heart, played by Sabrina Carpenter, became my favorite Disney character. I followed her through the show, her music videos, Monstober, the Fa-La-La-La holidays; everything she was in, I was watching. Looking back, I think the most important aspect of Maya Heart was that she never gave up her biggest desires. She wanted to be an artist, and she competed to get into the best programs, to keep art in school. My farthest fetched dream is to be an author, another career that is not seen as realistic. She shows kids who want to study in the arts that it is possible, that they should fight for it. When Girl Meets World ended I lost Sabrina for a while. I was still young and I didn’t have access to socials, so my music taste came from the radio. However, when I was 15, finally allowed on the net, Emails I Can’t Send came out. I saw Sabrina on my For You Page and made it a priority to check it out. Over the next three weeks, I played the album probably 100 times. The music was personal, but it was also fun. There were gut wrenching lyrics and confidence boosting beats. I was amazed. As soon as tickets came out for the tour, I bought them. She carried me through my Sophomore year, and watching her perform in San Antonio was one of the greatest nights of my life. I have been so excited to watch her gain popularity over the next year, to learn to use her voice. She inspires me every day to say what I need to say, and most importantly, to keep writing. To me, Sabrina will always be Maya Heart. She will always be telling me to fight for what
