Since I was a little, I have been drawn to female leaders in their respective fields who pave the way for aspiring young girls. While a fictional character, Doc McStuffins sparked my interest in a career in medicine and my goal to be a smart, driven, and compassionate humanitarian. As a high school student, I have looked up to my Great Aunt Gail and my cousin Michelle who are both healthcare workers and dedicated to their jobs. Aware of the rigor of the medical environment, they have informed me about the difficulties as a woman, especially one of mixed heritage, to endure such a demanding field. However, through my experience with balancing a challenging school and numerous extracurricular activities, they assured me that I can take on anything and succeed as long as I put my mind to it. Following insightful conversations with family members and friends, I have dedicated the rest of my high school career to excelling in school and immersing myself in scientific environments in order to prepare myself for college and medical school. When it came time to select a degree program for my intended university, the University of Alabama, I decided to select a Bachelors in Science in Psychology. Psychology fascinates me with its ability to describe and explain complex concepts about the human brain and clarify why humans are the way they are. Also, I am extremely lucky to have an excellent AP Psychology teacher who makes the course intriguing and desirable, affirming my decision to further study Psychology. I have always had an affinity for science, but taking the AP Psychology course my senior year has shown me that I am more called to the social sciences rather than mathematical-based sciences such as Chemistry and Physics. I am aware that the approximately 4% of Psychology students are multiethnic, or in my case, mixed with African American and White. This statistic further motivates me to break barriers and inspire future BIPOC scientists to believe in themselves and change social norms. Through my success in the Psychology major and medical field, I will demonstrate that any and everything is possible for people, especially minorities, as long as one is passionate and determined. The medical field is already lacks diversity with its multitude of men, so the amount of women and BIPOC women at that is slim. I am dedicated to fixing this so that more young girls are comfortable defying the odds and pursuing what they dream of despite the statistics.
