From my earliest memories, I've been drawn to understanding the human experience, driven by the vivid stories that encapsulated my upbringing. I am the child of a black Vietnam War veteran who, upon his return, battled addiction. This personal encounter exposed me to the stark reality of mental health struggles, particularly in marginalized communities, and sparked my deep-rooted interest in therapy.
My father's struggle with addiction was not just an individual battle; it was a reflection of the systemic failures and societal prejudices that culminated in a lack of proper support for veterans, especially those of color. Witnessing his struggle firsthand was painful but also illuminating. It emphasized the importance of mental health and unveiled the transformative power of empathetic understanding and intervention.
Having lived through this experience, my purpose in pursuing therapy as a career became much clearer: to foster spaces of healing for those grappling with their mental health. I yearned to create environments where stigmas are dismantled, individual narratives are acknowledged and honored, and transformative mental health care is accessible, particularly for marginalized communities.
The field of therapy presents a profound opportunity for lifelong learning, which is another facet that impassions me. Mental health is a dynamic field, continuously evolving with research breakthroughs and new therapeutic modalities. To navigate this, one needs a commitment to ongoing education. As a therapist, I will continuously learn and adapt, taking in each client's unique narrative and applying fresh insights to promote their well-being.
My lived experience and academic interests have solidified my belief in the vital role mental health plays in our lives. Mental health is the undercurrent that runs through every aspect of our existence, from our self-perceptions and relationships to our ability to fulfill our potential. Yet, it is frequently stigmatized and neglected, especially in communities like my own. This motivates me to serve as an advocate for mental health, and to be on the front lines, offering direct therapeutic services.
Therapy, to me, is both an art and a science. It necessitates creativity in comprehending unique perspectives and an analytical approach backed by empirical research and therapeutic techniques. This blend of artistry and scientific rigor is a realm where my passion truly lies.
In conclusion, the personal experience of witnessing my father's struggle, the power of empathetic understanding, the excitement of continual learning, the pivotal role of mental health, and the intersection of art and science all fuel my passion for a career in therapy. As I embark on this journey, I am committed to advocating for mental well-being and making significant contributions to the field of therapy. I believe this scholarship will provide invaluable support in pursuing these aspirations.
Thank you so much for your time, I hope my story resonates with you.

y path towards a degree in mental health is a deeply personal and emotionally charged one, strongly interwoven with my lived experiences as a multiracial black woman. The circumstances I've faced, the adversities I've overcome, and my tireless dedication to contributing positively to my community have shaped my resolve to be a force for good in the realm of mental health.
As a daughter of a Vietnam War veteran who grappled with opioid addiction, I witnessed the profound and damaging effects of untreated mental health issues firsthand. My father, a black man grappling with the scars of war and the challenges of racial discrimination, found himself in the throes of addiction, a struggle that was exacerbated by an inadequate healthcare system that failed to acknowledge and treat his multifaceted issues. This early exposure to the devastating effects of untreated mental health disorders imprinted upon me the urgent need for more inclusive and compassionate mental health resources and policies.
My encounters with mental health extend beyond my familial experiences. In my early twenties, I found myself in the grips of domestic violence. This traumatic period was a harsh and terrifying lesson in the impact of mental health on personal resilience and recovery. Emerging from this experience stronger and more determined, I understood the crucial role of mental health in overcoming personal trials and fostering resilience.
These experiences formed the foundation of my resolve to dedicate myself to the field of mental health, particularly focusing on the mental well-being of the black and brown community. As a multiracial black woman, I understand the unique mental health challenges faced by individuals within our community – from the systemic barriers that prevent access to mental health care, to the stigmatization and misunderstanding of mental health issues.
This understanding drives my ambition to obtain a psychology degree, allowing me to transform my lived experiences into a potent tool for empathetic guidance and support. By engaging in formal study, I can equip myself with the academic and practical knowledge required to make a real difference.
In my professional role as a certified meditation leader, I have been privileged to help individuals find balance and foster mental well-being. This work has solidified my belief in the transformational power of mental health initiatives and reinforced my commitment to advocating for mental health, particularly within the black and brown community.
Pursuing this degree is a natural continuation of my life's work. It will enable me to better understand mental health, broaden my ability to empathize with those suffering and provide informed support. This is more than just a career aspiration – it is a mission. It's a mission to use my journey, understanding, and education to change the narrative surrounding mental health and provide tangible help to those who need it most.
The pursuit of this degree, for me, is a testament to the transformative power of empathy, understanding, and resilience. Through my studies, I aim to contribute to changing the conversation around mental health, replacing stigma and misunderstanding with compassion and empathy. My ultimate goal is to utilize my experiences, education, and passion to create a society where mental well-being is accessible and prioritized, particularly for those in my community. My mission is not merely to heal, but to empower, fostering a world where mental health is understood, embraced, and treated with the respect and attention it so critically needs.
Thank you so much for your consideration.

The decision to pursue an education in community studies is deeply rooted in my own life story, where I have witnessed the profound impact that empathetic community engagement and support can have on individuals facing adversity. Growing up as a multiracial, Black woman amidst challenging circumstances, such as coping with the aftermath of my father's opioid addiction and escaping domestic violence, I have experienced first-hand the effects of societal and systemic issues. These experiences have fueled my drive to not only understand these complexities better but also to effect tangible change and upliftment in my community.
The study of community studies offers a unique intersection of disciplines that can empower me with the theoretical understanding and practical skills necessary to advocate for and contribute to community development. I view it as an opportunity to broaden my perspective, understand social dynamics better, and acquire the tools necessary to identify and address the unique needs of my community. I firmly believe that education and action go hand in hand; acquiring knowledge will augment my efforts to support those in need and initiate meaningful, sustainable change.
Upon graduation, I intend to apply the insights and skills gained to strengthen my community on several fronts. First, I plan to focus on mental health advocacy. My experience as a certified meditation leader has shown me the power of mental well-being in enhancing the quality of life. I wish to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and work towards eradicating the stigma surrounding it, particularly within the African American community.
Secondly, I aim to leverage my educational training to assist individuals who have been affected by substance abuse and domestic violence. Having lived through these experiences myself, I am committed to creating safe spaces for dialogue, healing, and growth, and to provide resources and support to help individuals recover and rebuild their lives.
Lastly, I see myself continuing my work in educational outreach. Knowledge is a vital tool for empowerment, and I am passionate about equipping others with the knowledge and skills they need to improve their lives and contribute positively to the community.
In essence, my pursuit of education in community studies stems from a deeply personal place of wanting to use my lived experiences to empathize, connect, and uplift others in my community. As Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." I am eager to wield this weapon, not only to change my world but also to create a better world for those in my community.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Growing up as a multiracial, Black woman in an environment of adversity, I was often faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges. Yet, these experiences, rather than hindering my growth, fortified my spirit, shaping me into a resilient individual capable of transforming personal adversity into communal upliftment.
One of the significant challenges I had to face was dealing with the aftermath of my father's opioid addiction, stemming from trauma endured as a Vietnam War veteran. This was a devastating chapter in our lives. Witnessing his struggle and suffering, I learned at an early age the power of resilience and the importance of seeking help.
Another form of adversity I faced was in my early 20s when I became a victim of domestic violence. It was a traumatic time, a period of intense fear and uncertainty. Escaping that situation required every ounce of strength and courage I could muster, along with a support network that I could lean on. Overcoming that ordeal left me with a deeper understanding of the resilience inherent in the human spirit and a resolve to help others facing similar situations.
Despite these obstacles, or perhaps because of them, I found a passion for helping others. I channeled the empathy born from my experiences into becoming a certified meditation leader and yoga instructor. Through this work, I've been able to guide people in finding balance, inner peace, and strength within themselves.
Looking to the future, my goal is to increase the scale and depth of my contributions to my community. My ultimate aspiration is to become a clinical psychiatrist, a profession that will enable me to offer professional mental health services to those who need them. With the education I am pursuing, I am laying the groundwork to address the pressing issue of mental health care, particularly within the African American community.
In addition, I am dedicated to leveraging my personal experiences and professional acumen to support victims of domestic violence and substance abuse. Understanding the complexities of these issues, I aim to promote awareness, provide resources, and create safe spaces for individuals who are wrestling with these burdens.
Overcoming adversity has molded me, but it does not define me. Rather, it has provided a unique lens through which I see the world. It has instilled in me an unwavering dedication to helping others overcome their adversities and a deep-seated commitment to fostering resilience and healing in my community. Through sharing my journey and offering my support, I hope to bring light to those navigating their paths through adversity.

As a meditation leader and yoga instructor, I have witnessed firsthand the profound effects that stress and mental health issues can have on individuals. Observing the people I work with struggle with these issues led me to understand that mental health is a critical social issue that is often overlooked. This realization was a profound turning point for me, inspiring me to take up the cause of mental health awareness and care.
In a society where mental health issues are often stigmatized or misunderstood, I believe that providing resources for awareness, self-care, and access to professional help is crucial. My work as a meditation leader is a direct response to this need. I guide individuals through mindfulness techniques, helping them gain control over their thought processes and emotional states. I make this contribution not only in one-on-one sessions but also by creating videos on social media to share these techniques with a broader audience.
There's a specific incident that further underscores why I am so committed to addressing this issue. A woman named Sara started attending my meditation classes. She was initially very reserved and frequently seemed lost in her thoughts. Over time, Sara began to open up about her struggle with anxiety. She shared that the breathing techniques and mental calming strategies I taught in class were making a real difference for her. It was a turning point for her, but also for me, reinforcing my resolve to continue working towards raising mental health awareness and providing resources for self-care.
While I'm proud of the work I do as a meditation leader, I realized that there's a limit to how much I can help as a non-professional in the field of mental health care. This is one of the reasons I've returned to school to study psychology, to become a clinical psychiatrist. Through furthering my education, I aim to gain the tools and knowledge necessary to make a more substantial impact on the issue of mental health.
Furthermore, I actively participate in local community groups focused on mental health. These groups work on raising awareness, reducing stigma, and lobbying for better mental health policies. It's through these collective efforts that I believe we can make a significant difference.
Being a daughter of a Vietnam War veteran who struggled with opioid addiction, I have experienced firsthand the severe impacts of unaddressed mental health issues and addiction. These personal experiences, combined with my work in meditation and yoga, have shaped my passion for mental health advocacy and care.
Ultimately, addressing the mental health crisis in our society is not an easy task, but I am determined to be part of the solution. I believe that through education, awareness, and compassion, we can collectively work towards a society where mental health care is accessible, understood, and free of stigma.
