Bio

My life goal is to become a veterinarian and open my own practice. I also would like to incorporate my love of fashion with my love of animals and create a line of exclusive pet fashion. Doing this allows me to combine two of my passions. I am a great candidate for this scholarship because I understand the importance of education. I come from a long line of people who have instilled the value of getting a good education. This will allow me to be able to create the future that I want for myself.

I am Lexi Bowman, I attend Prairie View A & M University in Prairie View, Texas majoring in Agricultural Business focusing on preparing for veterinary school. I will be the fourth generation of my family to attend and graduate from Prairie View A & M University. I owe my very existence to this HBCU! My Great Grandfather met my Great Grand Mother at Prairie View A & M University. My Gigi (grandmother) met my Da-da (grandfather) at Prairie View A & M University. And my Mama met my Dad, well my Step Dad who has raised me as his own, there as well. Fairytales sometimes have to take detours, but you get my point. Prairie View A & M University and other HBCU’s have been vital to the African American community and continue to do so in the 21st century. I know that attending Prairie View will create a community and network that will become invaluable as I move in my professional and personal life. HBCU's like Prairie View are beacons of empowerment, education, and cultural preservation for African American students and the broader community. By promoting diversity, equity, and academic excellence, HBCUs are indispensable in the quest for a more inclusive and fair society. As I move into the next stage of my life I will become part of that legacy leaving a mark that will help move my institution to the next level of progress and prosperity. My journey has been a blend of academic exploration, creativity, a deep commitment to community service, athletic growth, and a firm foundation in my faith in God. I have been able to use all of those aspects of my life to achieve my previous goals and I will use them to reach my next goals. I began in competitive sports began with cheerleading. In cheer I was blessed to be supported by great coaches who believed in me and nurtured my growth from day one. This nurturing environment was very different from my freshman year high school volleyball experience. Where from my initial introduction into the gym I felt unwanted. Despite this, my passion for volleyball kept pushing me to persevere. Which I did but I was never given a fair opportunity only being allowed to play Junior Varsity while my peers and Club volleyball teammates were placed on Varsity. Entering my senior year, I had never felt more prepared. I was able to showcase skills on par with the varsity players. Yet, a lingering intuition suggested the new head coach harbored a bias against me. This intuition was confirmed when I was the sole senior cut from the team. After feeling those feelings, I redirected my focus towards the upcoming club volleyball season, where my commitment began to bear fruit. College coaches started to take notice, extending scholarship offers and acknowledging the player I had always strived to be. This shift marked a significant turning point. It validated me and my dedication to the sport. I also redirected in school sports and challenged myself with joining the school track team learning a new sport, throwing the discus and shot put. I met the challenge and earned a spot on the Varsity track team. I placed third in our district 11-6A. Which allowed me to go to the Area met and place 2nd place. I am very proud of those accomplishments. As a result of this I have a new goal to continue my track and field career and throw shot put in college. I have been training with a coach that is improving my throwing technique. My ultimate goal is to set a college and conference record. I chose to use those negative experiences to fuel my drive to be better. Even if my current coaches refused to see me and give me a chance. I knew that would not always be the case. I just had to prepare for the day that the right coaches did see me and open the door for me to show my talent and hard work. When I did, I had scholarship offers and coaches that were able to recognize the greatness inside of me.

My journey has been a blend of academic exploration, creativity, a deep commitment to community service, athletic growth, and a firm foundation in my faith in God. I have been able to use all of those aspects of my life to achieve my previous goals and I will use them to reach my next goals. With my major in Agri-Business I am able to combine two of my passions. My passion for veterinary science and fashion design. These are not just my career choice but also an avenue through which I aim to contribute to my community. I plan to open a veterinary practice that goes beyond providing healthcare for pets. I envision it as a community hub where pet owners can access educational resources about animal welfare and participate in events that strengthen the human-animal bond. Integrating my interest in fashion design, specifically pet fashion, will add a unique and joyful dimension to pet care in my community. I plan to leverage my business skills and veterinary expertise to organize community outreach programs, such as free health check-ups for pets in underserved areas. I also want to develop educational workshops for local schools. I believe that by educating the younger generation about animal care and empathy, we can foster a more compassionate and responsible community. Which will help with the overpopulation of pets and hopefully show them the potential careers in animal science. My commitment to community service which was honed through years of involvement with organizations like Delta Sigma Theta TASPERS, Phi Delta Kappa - Xino, and Top Ladies - Top Teens of America. These experiences enriched my understanding of community needs and have equipped me with the skills to effectively contribute to various initiatives. Each organization had a different focus that gave me the opportunity to see several areas of need in my community. And learn the ways I can help meet those needs. After being cut from school volleyball in my senior year I challenged myself with joining the school track team and learning a new sport, throwing the discus and shot put. I am very proud of those accomplishments. As a result of this I have a new goal to continue my track and field career and throw shot put in college. I have been training have a coach that is showing me the correct way to throw. My ultimate goal is to set a school and conference record. I have a goal to graduate student debt free and this scholarship will help me to do that. I have a heart of compassion and want to create my own scholarship in the future. My family fostered in me the understanding that ‘to whom much is given, much is required”. I know that because I have been blessed, I must also be a blessing to others. My journey is not just about achieving personal and professional goals. It is deeply intertwined with my faith and my commitment to making a positive impact in my community. I plan to contribute to my community. Helping to create a community that values empathy, care, and a shared sense of responsibility.

One significant challenge I have encountered was the experience with volleyball coaches who failed to recognize my true potential. The sting of being overlooked is very hurtful when you devote yourself to a sport you've cherished since childhood. Only to feel sidelined by those you believed would challenge and support your growth. A coach should fill the roles of mentor, leader, and motivator. However, when they fall short, it can detour a player’s growth. My journey into competitive sports began with cheerleading. Over time, it became increasingly clear that the volleyball coaching staff did not value me. Giving me very little encouragement or opportunity. Then my school hired a new coach during my sophomore year. I saw a potential turning point to demonstrate my dedication and improvement. However, despite my best efforts and extra training. Which included sessions with college coaches and other trainers. my aspirations to join the varsity team remained unfulfilled through my junior year. College coaches started to take notice, extending offers and acknowledging the player I had always strived to be. This shift marked a significant turning point. It validated me and my dedication to the sport. In addition, I used the time to branch out to a new sport. I tried and became very successful at throwing the shot put in track and field. As a first year thrower I placed 3rd in District. That allowed me to go on to Area where I placed 2nd. I did not place in Region but the experience taught me that I can be successful no matter the circumstances. And as long as I believe in me I will be fine. As I close, I chose to use those negative experiences to fuel my drive to be better. Even if my current coaches refused to see me and give me a chance. I knew that would not always be the case. I just had to prepare for the day that the right coaches did see me and open the door for me to show my talent and hard work. When I did, I had scholarship offers and coaches that were able to recognize the greatness inside of me. I will take this experience and use it to encourage others to not let naysayers keep them from doing something they love. As well as allowing them to see that there may be new things to try and excel at.

I met the challenge and earned a spot on the Varsity track team. I placed third in our district 11-6A. Which allowed me to go to the Area met and place 2nd place. I am very proud of those accomplishments. As a result of this I have a new goal to continue my track and field career and throw shot put in college. Entering my senior year, I had never felt more prepared. I was able to showcase skills on par with the varsity players. Yet, a lingering intuition suggested the new head coach harbored a bias against me. This intuition was confirmed when I was the sole senior cut from the team. Undeterred, I redirected my focus towards the upcoming club season, where my commitment began to bear fruit.

I am Lexi Bowman, I attend Prairie View A & M University in Prairie View, Texas majoring in Agricultural Business focusing on preparing for veterinary school. I will be the fourth generation of my family to attend and graduate from Prairie View A & M University. Additionally, integrating my interest in fashion design, specifically pet fashion, will add a unique and joyful dimension to pet care in my community. In the future, I plan to leverage my business skills and veterinary expertise to organize community outreach programs, such as free health check-ups for pets in underserved areas. These activities have instilled in me a sense of responsibility for doing my part to make society better. These experiences enriched my understanding of community needs and have equipped me with the skills to effectively contribute to various initiatives. Each experience has reinforced my desire to be an agent of positive change. Each organization had a different focus that gave me the opportunity to see several areas of need in my community. And learn the ways I can help meet those needs. I have a heart of compassion. My family fostered in me the understanding that ‘to whom much is given, much is required”. I know that because I have been blessed, I must also be a blessing to others. I have faced challenges academically, athletically and personally that have taught me valuable lessons. And because I have been able to stand through those challenges, I know I am worthy of all the blessings God has in store for me. In summary, my journey is not just about achieving personal and professional goals. It is deeply intertwined with my faith and my commitment to making a positive impact in my community. Through my future veterinary practice, community service initiatives, and educational outreach I plan to contribute to my community. Helping to create a community that values empathy, care, and a shared sense of responsibility. And hopefully people that see the value in helping others.

Throughout my life I have encountered numerous trials that shape my resilience, perseverance, and ability to rise above. One particularly significant challenge I encountered was the experience with volleyball coaches who failed to acknowledge my true ability. The sting is deep when you devote yourself to a sport you've cherished since childhood to be sidelined by those you believed would champion your growth. A coach should ideally embody the roles of mentor, leader, and motivator. However, when they fall short, it can significantly dampen an athlete's performance and morale. The influence a coach has over an athlete is substantia. It involves aspects of training, playing opportunities, and the overall team dynamic. My journey into competitive sports began with cheerleading, where I was fortunate to be supported by exceptional coaches who believed in me and nurtured my growth from the beginning. This nurturing environment was very different from my volleyball experience. Where from the begging I felt undervalued. Despite this, my passion for volleyball spurred me to persevere. Over time, it became increasingly clear that the volleyball coaching staff did not value me, offering little in the way of encouragement or opportunity. With the arrival of a new coach during my sophomore year, I saw a potential turning point to demonstrate my dedication and improvement. However, despite my best efforts and extra training with college coaches. My aspirations to join the varsity team remained unfulfilled through my junior year. Entering my senior year, I had never felt more prepared, showcasing skills on par with varsity players. Yet, my intuition told me that the new head coach harbored a bias against me. This intuition was confirmed when I was the sole senior cut from the team. Undeterred, I redirected my focus towards the upcoming club season, where my commitment began to bear fruit. College coaches started to take notice, extending offers and acknowledging the player I had always strived to be. This shift marked a significant turning point, validating my dedication to the sport. I have been made 5 offers, so far to play collegiate volleyball. This journey underscores a broader truth within athletics: the inevitability of encountering less-than-ideal coaches. Such challenges are not insurmountable barriers but rather opportunities for personal growth and resilience. It was crucial to maintain control over my attitude, effort, and responses to adversity. By adapting to and overcoming these challenges, I have not only evolved as an athlete but also solidified my resolve. This experience serves as a potent reminder that despite occasional setbacks, persistence and passion can eventually lead to recognition and success. I would advise anyone in my place to never let what someone else does not acknowledge in them cause them to give up on them selves. As long as you are doing the work someone will see it. And those over looking you are only adding motivation! Use them for what they are.

As I embark on my academic journey at Prairie View A & M University, my plan is to major in Business while completing prerequisites for Veterinary school. This unique combination of studies is not just a reflection of my personal interests but a strategic choice to serve my community more effectively. I want to serve as an example that you can combine passions that are seemingly unrelated and make your own path. My passion for veterinary science is driven by a lifelong love for animals and a desire to provide compassionate care. By studying veterinary medicine, I aim to gain the expertise needed to open and successfully run a veterinary practice. This practice will not only offer quality healthcare for pets but also serve as an educational resource for pet owners in my community, promoting responsible pet ownership and animal welfare. The business aspect of my studies is equally crucial. It will equip me with the necessary skills to manage a successful veterinary practice and potentially expand into other ventures, such as my dream of integrating pet fashion into my services. This will not only create local employment opportunities but also add a unique dimension to the community's pet care options. It also will allow me to have the knowledge needed to venture into other businesses and bring those opportunities to my own community. Moreover, my extensive involvement in community service through youth organizations like TASPERS sponsored by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Xinos sponsored by Phi Delta Kappa National Sorority, and Top Teens of America sponsored by the Top Ladies has instilled in me a deep sense of social responsibility. These experiences have shown me the importance of giving back and the impact that I can make through dedicated service. I plan to continue this spirit of service by involving my veterinary practice in community initiatives, such as offering free or discounted services to shelters and organizing educational workshops on animal care. I also desire to mentor other young people of color, expanding their vision of their own futures. In addition, I envision using my business acumen to support local community projects. Whether that be through direct involvement or by providing a platform for community engagement and awareness. My leadership roles in various service organizations have prepared me to take on such initiatives effectively. As well as grown my desire to be a help in my community and really make a difference. In summary, my studies in Business and Veterinary science are not just steps towards fulfilling my professional aspirations but are also a means to contribute positively to my community. I see my future role as not just a veterinarian or a business owner, but as a community leader who uses her skills and knowledge to make a tangible difference in the lives of both people and animals.
