Bio

My name is Levi, and my life is driven by a commitment to service, faith, and the belief that we are called to lift others up. My desire to become a nurse is more than just a profession, I believe it is a calling to be the hands and feet of Jesus, providing comfort and healing to people during their most vulnerable moments. Beyond the classroom and the clinic, my heart is on the basketball court. Basketball has taught me discipline, teamwork, and resilience, but my true passion lies in giving back to the next generation. I am dedicated to mentoring kids who share a love for the game, helping them develop their skills and confidence just as my parents and coaches once did for me. I feel that I am a strong candidate for this scholarship because I am not only focused on my own academic and athletic success but on how that success can be used to serve everyone around me. Whether I am assisting a patient or coaching a young athlete, my mission remains the same, to lead with faith, serve with compassion, and make a lasting impact in the lives of others. Thank you for your consideration.

In my home of Elberta, Alabama, the beauty of the coast is a constant reminder of God’s creation. However, my faith is not just found in the quiet moments on the sand, but in the active call to love my neighbor as myself. As a first-generation college student, I am pursuing a career in nursing not merely as a professional goal, but as a ministry of compassion and a way to live out the principles of love and faith that have guided my family for generations. My commitment to a life of service was deeply influenced by my grandparents, whose military service was an extension of their Christian values. They taught me that true honor is found in self-sacrifice and that we are called to be "the salt of the earth." Watching them lead with discipline and a servant’s heart gave me the foundation I needed to face my own "call to action." That call came vividly during the summer of 2024, when our community was shaken by the shark attack involving Lulu Gribbin in Orange Beach. Seeing the first responders act with such selflessness and speed was a witness to the power of human compassion in the face of tragedy. In those heroes, I saw the hands and feet of Christ, and I knew then that my path was to join their ranks as a trauma nurse. As I prepare to enter nursing school, I plan to impact the world through the principle of unconditional love. To me, nursing is the ultimate form of community service; it is the act of caring for individuals in their most broken and vulnerable hours. Whether I am treating a local resident or a visitor to our beaches, I intend to treat every patient with the dignity and grace they deserve as children of God. My goal is to work in emergency medicine here in Baldwin County, ensuring that our community remains a place of safety and healing. Faith will be the anchor of my practice. The healthcare field can be grueling, but I am reminded of the strength found in Christ to persevere. I hope to be a source of peace for families during high-stakes medical emergencies, offering not just clinical skill, but a prayerful presence. By combining the resilience I learned from my parents with the inspiration I drew from the bravery shown in Orange Beach, I aim to be a leader who leads with love. Through this scholarship, I hope to honor the legacy of Rev. Ethel K. Grinkley by proving that a career in medicine can be a lifelong mission of faith. I am ready to step forward as the first in my family to graduate college, carrying the torch of service into the hospitals and onto the shores of the community I love.

Growing up in central Alabama, just outside of Birmingham, we only experienced the beach on the occasional family vacations. A few years ago, we moved to Gulf Shores, mainly for peaceful sound of the waves. However, on a summer day in June 2024, that peace was shattered by the emergency sirens following the shark attack involving Lulu Gribbin in nearby Orange Beach. Like many in our community, I remember being in awe as first responders and bystanders acted with split-second precision. Their ability to remain calm amidst chaos and provide life-saving intervention solidified two things that day. One, they undoubtedly saved a young girl's life. And two, it inspired my resolve to become a nurse. I realized then that I don’t just want to provide healthcare, but rather be the person who can stand in the gap between life and death. My career goal is to become a Registered Nurse specializing in trauma and emergency medicine, eventually pursuing a role as a Flight Nurse or Nurse Practitioner. In a coastal community like Baldwin County, our medical needs are unique. We are a destination for millions, and our local professionals must be prepared for everything from routine care to intense trauma. I plan to use my education to serve the Gulf Shores community by working in our local emergency departments and volunteering for public health initiatives focused on beach safety and emergency preparedness. My mission is to ensure that both my neighbors and our visitors feel the same sense of security that those first responders provided on the beach that day. This drive for service is not a new found passion. I believe it is a family inheritance. Both of my grandparents served in the United States military, and their lives have been a masterclass in honor and selflessness. Growing up, I remember hearing stories of their service. I recall the discipline and grit they carried into their civilian lives. They were the inspiration of true honor coming from serving a cause greater than oneself. In the military, "standing a post" means being vigilant and reliable so that others can sleep soundly. I view nursing as my version of that post. The connection to the military has deeply shaped my perspective on the nursing profession. I have a profound respect for the "Combat Medic" spirit. I believe it is the same spirit that defined Evan James Vaillancourt. I am driven by a desire to provide critical care at the point of immediate need. My grandparents’ legacy has given me the "mental toughness" to face the rigors of nursing school and the emotional weight of trauma care. I understand that being a nurse requires more than just technical skill. I believe it requires a heart that is willing to sacrifice its own comfort for the sake of a patient. By merging the inspiration I took from the Orange Beach first responders with the foundational values instilled by my grandparents, I am prepared to dedicate my life to nursing. I am eager to contribute to the safety and health of Gulf Shores, honoring my family’s history of service by providing compassionate, high-level care to those in their most vulnerable moments. Thank you for considering me for this scholarship, but more importantly, I would like to thank Evan James Vaillancourt and the countless men and women like him who have and continue to serve this great nation!

Growing up in a household of eight wasn’t just about the noise, it has been a empowering lesson in resilience, sacrifice, and the development of a servant’s heart. My life has been shaped by the complex needs of those I love most. From navigating the daily challenges of my little brother Max’s Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome to supporting my older sister through her journey with bipolar schizophrenia, I learned early on that health is a fragile gift. When my parents opened our already full home to adopt my cousins, bringing our sibling count to six, the stakes grew even higher. I watched my parents stretch every dollar and every hour to ensure we were all cared for, often at the expense of their own rest. To ease their burden, I chose to grow up quickly. Being self-sufficient wasn't a choice, it was my contribution to our family's survival. Whether it was managing household chores, assisting with medical needs, or mentoring my younger siblings, I found my purpose in the gaps where my parents couldn't be. They have done so much for us, it was the least I could do. These experiences didn't harden me. Instead, they softened my heart. They instilled in me a profound compassion for those suffering from invisible battles and physical ailments alike. This is why I am called to Nursing. I don’t just want a career, I want to be a source of stability and healing for families who feel overwhelmed by the weight of a diagnosis. I feel my first hand knowledge and experiences were God's way of preparing me to reach others and help them in the toughest of times. In addition to my clinical goals, I am incredibly honored to have been offered a spot on the Huntingdon College basketball team. For me, the court has always been a sanctuary and a classroom. It is a place where my faith is put into action through discipline, perseverance, and leadership. I view this opportunity not just as a chance to play the game I love at the collegiate level, but as a platform to play for God’s glory. Every practice and every game is an opportunity to reflect His strength and grace, staying grounded in my values while competing at the highest level. Beyond the scoreboard, I intend to use my position as a student-athlete to reach out and mentor young athletes who are navigating their own journeys. I want to provide the same insight and encouragement that helped me stay focused amidst my family’s challenges. By sharing my story of balancing high-stakes responsibilities with athletic ambition, I hope to show them that their circumstances don't define their potential. My goal is to be a role model who leads with integrity, proving that you can be a fierce competitor on the court while remaining a compassionate servant of Christ off of it. However, the same financial struggles my parents face to provide for six children now stand between me and my degree. This scholarship would be a life-changing investment, allowing me to focus on my clinical training and playing college basketball without adding too much more to my family's financial strain. By supporting my education, you are helping me achieve my dream of giving back to a world that needs more love, one patient at a time. Thank you for reading part of my story and considering me for this scholarship.
