RonranGlee Special Needs Teacher Literary Scholarship
My passion for becoming a special education teacher stems from a deep-seated belief that every child, regardless of their abilities or challenges, deserves an opportunity to thrive and discover their unique potential. This belief is not just a professional aspiration; it is deeply personal, shaped by my experiences with my nephew, who is on the autism spectrum. Watching him navigate the world with both struggles and triumphs has inspired me to dedicate my life to helping children like him find their voices and sense of self.
The quote by Professor Harold Bloom, “The purpose of teaching is to bring the student to his or her sense of his or her own presence,” resonates deeply with me, especially within the context of special education. To me, this statement speaks to the core of what it means to teach—not merely to impart knowledge but to help students understand their own worth, capabilities, and individuality. It is about guiding them to a place where they can confidently express who they are and recognize the value they bring to the world.
In the realm of special education, this guiding principle takes on even greater significance. Many students with special needs may struggle with self-awareness, confidence, or communication, which can sometimes make it difficult for them to experience a sense of their own presence. My mission as a special education teacher is to create an environment where these students can flourish. I aim to provide them with the tools and support they need to understand and express themselves, to feel seen and heard, and to recognize that they are valuable members of their communities.
To achieve this, I will focus on individualized learning plans that cater to each student’s specific needs, strengths, and interests. I believe in using a combination of structured guidance and creative, flexible teaching methods that allow students to explore and express their individuality. By fostering a supportive and inclusive classroom, I will encourage my students to take ownership of their learning and to develop a strong sense of self-worth.
Imagine, for a moment, a fairy tale where a young teacher sets out on a journey to help children find their own voices. In a land where every child is unique, with their own set of challenges and gifts, the teacher is armed with patience, understanding, and an unwavering belief in each child’s potential. Along the way, the teacher encounters many obstacles—fears, doubts, and misunderstandings—but she never wavers in her quest. She listens to the children’s hearts, speaks to them in a language they understand, and creates a magical classroom where each child’s light can shine brightly. In the end, the children discover that they are not only capable but extraordinary in their own ways, each finding their place in the world with confidence and joy.
This fairy tale mirrors the journey I wish to embark upon as a special education teacher. I am driven by the desire to help my students experience a sense of their own presence, to recognize their strengths, and to empower them to share those strengths with the world. It is a mission that I am passionate about, one that is deeply rooted in my personal experiences and my commitment to making a difference in the lives of children with special needs. Through patience, creativity, and unwavering support, I aim to guide my students to a place where they can stand proudly in their own presence, knowing that they are valued and capable of achieving great things.
Marie Humphries Memorial Scholarship
From a young age, I was drawn to the idea of teaching, fascinated by the role that educators play in shaping the future. As I progressed through my education, this interest deepened, fueled by the realization that teaching is not just about imparting knowledge but also about nurturing growth, fostering a sense of community, and making a lasting impact on students’ lives. My passion for this profession was profoundly influenced by one teacher in particular—Ms. Kim—who not only taught us academic lessons but also imparted life lessons that would stay with us long after we left her classroom.
Ms. Kim was more than just a teacher; she was a mentor, a guide, and, most importantly, a compassionate and understanding figure in the lives of her students. Every day, she went above and beyond what was required of her, showing an extraordinary level of dedication to her students’ well-being. Her classroom was more than just a space for learning; it was a home away from home, a sanctuary where every student felt valued and accepted.
What set Ms. Kim apart was her ability to create an environment where every student felt comfortable being themselves. She understood that her students came from diverse backgrounds and faced unique challenges, both inside and outside of school. Rather than merely focusing on academic achievement, Ms. Kim took the time to understand each of her students on a personal level. She offered a listening ear when we needed to talk, provided extra help when we struggled with our studies, and encouraged us to believe in ourselves even when we doubted our abilities.
Her classroom was a place where we could escape the stresses of the outside world, where we were free to express ourselves without fear of judgment. Ms. Kim fostered a sense of community among her students, encouraging us to support one another and work together. Through her actions, she taught us the importance of empathy, kindness, and respect—values that have stayed with me long after I left her class.
Ms. Kim’s influence on my life was profound, and it is because of her that I am determined to pursue a career in teaching. I want to create a classroom environment that is just as welcoming and supportive as hers, where students feel safe, valued, and encouraged to reach their full potential. Teaching, for me, is not just a profession—it is a calling to make a positive difference in the lives of others, just as Ms. Kim did for me. Through my career as a teacher, I hope to inspire, guide, and nurture future generations, helping them to grow not only as students but as individuals.
Kathleen L. Small Teaching Scholarship
From a young age, I’ve always found joy in helping others achieve their goals, no matter how small. Whether it was assisting a classmate with a tricky math problem or cheering on a friend as they learned to ride a bike, I’ve always been drawn to the moments when someone realizes they’ve reached a milestone. This passion for supporting others has naturally led me toward a career in education, where I can dedicate my life to guiding children through their own learning journeys.
One particular experience stands out in my mind—a memory from my time volunteering at a local community center. I was helping a group of first graders with their reading skills, and one child, in particular, was struggling. Every word felt like a mountain for him to climb, and he often became frustrated and discouraged. I decided to take a different approach, using games and encouragement to make the learning process feel less daunting and more enjoyable. Slowly but surely, he began to improve, and I’ll never forget the day he read an entire sentence without stumbling. The smile that spread across his face was contagious, and in that moment, I knew that I wanted to spend my life helping children reach these kinds of milestones.
This experience reinforced my belief that education is not just about imparting knowledge; it’s about fostering confidence, resilience, and a love of learning. Every child learns differently, and part of the joy of teaching is discovering the unique ways to reach each student. Whether through creative lesson plans, one-on-one support, or simply being a patient and encouraging presence, I am committed to helping each child in my care reach their fullest potential.
My inspiration for pursuing a career in education also comes from a teacher who made a profound impact on my life. Mrs. Boyd, my third-grade teacher, had an incredible way of making each student feel seen and valued. She understood that education wasn’t just about grades; it was about developing a sense of self-worth and belief in one’s abilities. Mrs. Boyd’s positive reinforcement strategies and her genuine care for her students showed me the kind of educator I aspire to be—one who helps children not only learn but also grow into confident, capable individuals.
As I continue my journey towards becoming an educator, I am driven by the desire to create an environment where children feel supported, encouraged, and empowered. I want to be the kind of teacher who helps students reach their milestones, not just academically but in every aspect of their development. In doing so, I hope to inspire the next generation of learners to believe in themselves and their potential.
