I am not just a proud student, but as a 38-year-old high-school graduate, a testament to the belief that it's never too late to chase your dreams. The same year I would've graduated from high school when I found out I was pregnant, I was 17 years old. I had to make the very difficult decision to withdraw from high school. Not having a high school diploma has been the main obstacle in my life. Without an education, life is EXTREMELY CHALLENGING. I have pursued this goal not only for myself but also for my children, aiming to demonstrate the power of perseverance and dedication. I wanted to show them firsthand that hard work pays off, and that when you put your heart and soul into achieving your goals - DREAMS DO COME TRUE.
I have a dream to be a nurse! I am pursuing my RN-BSN.
I have a vision to help fellow addicts through their difficult times and prove that if I can do it anyone can.
On 12/22/23 I make the move to make the change that will impact my future as well as my children’s. I applied for college as a first-generation student, a single mother who has jumped through hoops of fire and overcame many things a lot of people said were impossible to get through… I am a born leader and a fighter! I will not let my mental health diagnosis’ get in the way of achieving my lifelong goals and becoming the most compassionate nurse - that I know I can be!

Becoming a mother at 17 was a life-altering experience that profoundly shaped my educational journey. At an age when most of my peers were focused on prom and college applications, I was navigating the complexities of being pregnant and anxious about my future as a single parent. This unexpected life change brought immense challenges and instilled in me a resilience and determination that have driven me ever since. Unfortunately, I had to put my education on the back burner, a decision that significantly impacted my future.
When I first discovered I was pregnant, I was overwhelmed with a mix of emotions—fear, uncertainty, and a deep sense of responsibility. The initial months were the hardest. Balancing prenatal appointments and the physical demands of pregnancy was exhausting. Trying to figure out where I was going to live with a brand new baby was scary, especially since a minor cannot sign a lease. I often regretted my decision to drop out of high school. I did not receive the emotional support I expected from my parents when I informed them of my pregnancy and my decision regarding school.
The birth of my child marked a new chapter filled with both joy and hardship. Sleepless nights and the constant demands of a newborn made life difficult. There were moments when I felt like giving up, questioning whether I could handle the dual responsibilities of being a mother and working. However, the thought of providing a better future for my child kept me motivated. Living paycheck to paycheck was unrealistic. Financial strain was another major challenge. The cost of childcare, diapers, and other necessities added up quickly, making it difficult to afford anything, let alone daycare and rent. So, I quit my part-time job and applied for state financial assistance. I knew that education was my ticket to a stable and fulfilling life for both of us, but my emotional health became an issue, and I needed to seek mental health treatment. Years passed, and I realized that the one missing piece was still my education.
Despite the hardships, being a mother gave me a sense of purpose and a clear goal to strive for. I knew I had always wanted to be a registered nurse. When I gave birth to my daughter, she had complications and was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. That was an extremely scary time for me, being a single, 18-year-old mother alone in the NICU, trying to nurse my daughter back to health. That experience solidified my decision to stop feeling down and go back to school so I could pursue my dream of being a nurse and help other mothers in similar situations.
On September 16, 2022, I made a life-changing move and enrolled in a preparation class for my HISET, high school equivalency. I spent a year preparing, and on December 22, 2023, I passed my tests. I immediately applied to community college. I was accepted and started my first year of college at the age of 38. It was exactly 18 years since I found my purpose in life! I have made the Dean’s List twice and am happily pursuing my nursing degree.

Imagine what it would feel like, if you were being the best part of someone’s worst day!?
Pursuing my nursing degree has been a dream for as long as I can remember, but I wasn’t ever taught about college or even discussed what I wanted to do after high-school. My family was dysfunctional, divorced parents when I turned 7 and I was the eldest. I had way too much time unsupervised and I became pregnant at 17, having my daughter at 18, same year I was too graduate high school. My education was put on the back burner, because I wanted to be a better parent than mine were to my sisters and I.
As a high school dropout, I never imagined that I would one day be on the path to earning my nursing degree. But after years of struggling with addiction, more than likely due to my childhood and substance use disorder proven to be hereditary. I always knew that I needed to make a change, in order to break the cycle and stop blaming my childhood for my choices to drop out of school, use substances major changes needed to happen, in my life. It was 678 days ago that I made the decision to get sober, to reclaim my life. I have worked tirelessly to overcome the obstacles in my path, putting one foot ahead of the other, made a commitment to myself and my daughters that I would not give up first; my HISET diploma , next; apply to college. Since, January 2024 ive put my all into my studies, for the past four consecutive semesters, I have made Dean's list, a testament to my dedication and commitment to my future.
As a first-time teen mom, I was already nervous that I’d fail, but after I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl with hypoglycemia and she and I spent 30 days in the NICU. Being alone most of the time there were only nurses by my side and they were the people I was always able to turn to and depend on, to guide and advise me. It was during those long and difficult days that I witnessed the incredible impact that nurses have on the lives of their patients and their families.
The nurses in the NICU were not just caregivers - they were healers, advocates, and sources of comfort and support during one of the most challenging times of my life. They showed me what it means to truly care for others, to go above and beyond in providing compassionate and holistic care to those in need. And it was in those moments that I knew that nursing was my calling, my purpose in life.
My experience in the NICU inspired me to pursue a career in nursing, to make a difference in the lives of others in the same way that the nurses had made a difference in mine. I want to be there for my patients and their families during their most vulnerable moments, to provide them with the same level of care and compassion that I received when I needed it most.
Becoming a nurse is not just a career choice for me - it is a lifelong commitment to serving others, to making a positive impact in the world, and to honoring the nurses who helped me through some of the darkest moments of my life. And I am grateful for the opportunity to pursue my dream and to make a difference in the lives of those in need

Pursuing my nursing degree has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember, but I wasn’t ever taught about college or even pursuing an education. My parents barely graduated highschool so education was never really discussed. My family was very dysfunctional, divorced when I turned 7 and I was the eldest of three girls so I was the main caretaker when my mother would cope from the pain of the divorce and my father was a “dry alcoholic” he quit physically drinking but never took control of the emotional aspect of his sobriety. He was emotionally deceased, he was unable to be there for us girls so we all grew up on our own. I am a first generation college student. It wasn't until recently that I found the courage and determination to make that dream a reality. My younger sister and I both decided to go back and we earned our high school equivalency diplomas- HISET! I graduated from highschool at 38, 20+ years after I “should have” but now she and I are both first generation college students.
My journey to becoming a registered nurse has been filled with challenges and obstacles, but it has also been a journey of growth, resilience, and transformation.

Success has been overcoming my persistent mental health challenges. I have conquered addiction despite two significant relapses. Throughout most of my life, I've battled various diagnoses along with substance use disorder. Success means engaging in the fight—overcoming and then aiding others effectively, which is what I aim to achieve. Mental health has dealt me blows, but I am determined not to let the illness prevent me from having a future. I am transforming my turmoil into a message, a message of hope.
Success, for me, as a mother, in recovery for 660 days, and as an advocate for other women in recovery and as a nurse, is multifaceted and deeply intertwined with my personal beliefs and my journey of growth, healing, and empowerment. As a mother, success means being a source of love, support, and guidance for my children, and serving as a positive role model for them as they navigate their own paths in life.
In my 660 days of recovery, (as of today 6/19/2024) success is defined by my continued commitment to my sobriety, self-discovery, and self-improvement, as well as my ability to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle and putting my mental health first and foremost.
As an advocate for other women in recovery, success is about empowering and inspiring others to embark on their own journeys of healing and transformation, while also fostering a sense of community, support, and solidarity among women in recovery. Finally, as a nursing student , success is putting my deep commitment in my studies so I can focus on mental health and helping others with their substance abuse struggles. As for a nurse in the field after graduation, success involves providing compassionate, high-quality care to patients, continuously expanding my knowledge and skills, and making a positive impact on the healthcare system and the lives of those in need.
A scholarship would play a crucial role in helping me achieve this vision of success and put everything I have been through and witnessed in my active addiction as well as my mental health struggles with depression, PTSD & anxiety and have overcome into my compassion for someone who is going through what I had and helping them as someone had helped me.
As a mother, the financial support provided by a scholarship would alleviate some of the financial stress and burden that often accompanies pursuing higher education and training, allowing me to focus on my studies and personal growth without worrying about the cost. This, in turn, would enable me to be more present and engaged with my children, ensuring that I can continue to be a supportive and nurturing presence in their lives.
In my journey of recovery, a scholarship would open up opportunities for me to further my education and training in addiction recovery and support, allowing me to deepen my understanding of addiction and recovery, and enhancing my ability to advocate for and assist other women in their recovery journeys. By investing in specialized training and certifications, I can develop the skills and knowledge needed to effectively support and empower women in recovery and contribute to the broader community of individuals seeking healing and transformation.
Overall, a scholarship would not only provide me with the financial support needed to achieve my goals as a mother, advocate, and nurse, but also open up new opportunities for personal and professional growth, development, and impact. It would be a catalyst for success, enabling me to continue on my journey of healing, growth, and empowerment, while also making a positive difference in the lives of others.
Thank you.

Technology has revolutionized the healthcare industry, transforming the delivery of healthcare services and significantly improving patient outcomes. As a nursing student looking to turn my ”mess into a message” of hope and healing, understanding the impact of technology on healthcare is crucial to my future practice.
Advancements in technology have enabled healthcare professionals to provide more efficient and effective care to patients. Allied health professionals and first responders can leverage these advancements to enhance their practice and ultimately save more lives. One of the most significant technological advancements in healthcare is telemedicine. Telemedicine allows healthcare providers to remotely diagnose, treat, and monitor patients using telecommunications technology. This has been particularly beneficial in rural or underserved areas where access to healthcare services may be limited. By leveraging telemedicine, allied health professionals and first responders can reach patients in need more quickly and provide timely care, ultimately improving patient outcomes.
Electronic health records (EHRs) are another technological solution that has had a profound impact on the healthcare industry. EHRs allow healthcare professionals to access patient information quickly and efficiently, streamlining the care delivery process and reducing the likelihood of medical errors. By having access to accurate and up-to-date patient information, healthcare providers can make more informed decisions and provide better care to our patients, leading to improved outcomes.
Wearable health monitoring devices, such as Fitbits and smartwatches, have also revolutionized the way patients track and monitor their health. These devices allow patients to monitor their own health metrics and share that information with their healthcare providers. By leveraging these technologies, allied health professionals and first responders can remotely monitor their patients and intervene if necessary, leading to more personalized and effective care.
Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are also playing an increasingly important role in healthcare. These technologies can analyze vast amounts of data to identify patterns and trends that may not be immediately apparent to healthcare professionals. AI can assist in diagnosing diseases, predicting patient outcomes, and personalizing treatment plans. By leveraging AI, allied health professionals and first responders can make more accurate diagnoses, develop better treatment plans, and ultimately improve patient outcomes.
Something that I find incredibly interesting- Robotic surgery is another innovative technological solution that has transformed the field of healthcare. Robotic surgery allows for more precise and minimally invasive procedures, resulting in faster recovery times and better outcomes for patients. By incorporating robotic surgery into medine mmmmm , practice, allied health professionals can perform complex procedures with greater precision and efficiency, ultimately saving more lives.
In conclusion, technology has played a crucial role in transforming the delivery of healthcare services and improving patient outcomes. As a nursing student with a passion for helping others and a desire to turn my past struggles into a message of hope, understanding the impact of technology on healthcare will be essential in my future practice. By leveraging advancements in technology, allied health professionals and first responders can provide more efficient and effective care, ultimately helping to save more lives and make a lasting impact on the lives of their patients.

First and foremost, addiction nursing allows me to turn my “mess into a message” of strength and perseverance. I personally have been struggling with addiction for a large portion of my life. I am in recovery and always will be, unfortunatly relapse happens within recovery and due to a dual diagnosis that I have - depression, being unmedicated for a short period of time led to a relapse. I overcame my obstacles and I have 653 days free of all substances. Before that my clean date was August 28, 2012. I am living proof that ADDICTION does not discriminate. I have always had a passion for helping others and with my interest in mental health and substance abuse, I know my message will help many people. I believe that individuals struggling with addiction deserve compassion and non-judgmental care, and I am dedicated to supporting them in their recovery process. Addiction nursing provides myself with the opportunity to work closely with these individuals, offering them the care they need to overcome their addiction. All while working my own recovery process at the same time.
Working with individuals who are facing addiction can be emotionally demanding, but it is also incredibly rewarding. As an addiction nurse, I will have the chance to make a significant impact on the lives of my patients, helping them to break free from the cycle of addiction and regain control of their lives..

I’m not just as a proud student , but as a 38-year-old highschool graduate, a testament to the belief that it's never too late to chase your dreams. The same year I would've graduated from high school is when I found out I was pregnant, I was 17 years old. I had to make the very difficult decision to withdraw from highschool. I could have stayed in school but when my daughter was born she had hypoglycemia and was rushed straight to the NICU and was admitted for 2.5 weeks and it was there waiting and waiting for her diagnosis to stabilize that I knew I wanted to pursue s nursing career but with PEDS as my focus and with children with mental health diagnosis . Not having a highschool diploma has been the main obstacle in my life. Without an education, life is EXTREMELY CHALLENGING. I have pursued this goal not only for myself but also for my children, aiming to demonstrate the power of perseverance and dedication. I wanted to show them firsthand that hard work pays off, and when you put your heart and soul into achieving your goals - DREAMS DO COME TRUE.
623 days ago, I made a pivotal decision. Recognizing the depth of my struggles with addiction and depression, I sought help in a mental health hospital. I realized that if I didn't make life-changing choices, I risked leaving my children without their mother. It was my rock bottom, but also the starting point of my journey towards healing and resilience.
Being a single young mother has presented its challenges, impacting both my personal and professional life. Juggling the responsibilities of parenthood while pursuing a nursing career has been demanding. The need to prioritize childcare often meant sacrificing career opportunities or delaying career advancement. However, despite these obstacles, being a single young mother has also instilled in me resilience, determination, and a deep sense of purpose. These experiences have shaped my character and provided me with valuable skills that I can apply to any career path I choose to pursue in the future. Moreover, being a single young mother has taught me the importance of time management, problem-solving, and resilience in the face of adversity. While it may have initially limited my career options, it has also motivated me to strive for success not only for myself but also for my children. As I navigate the challenges of single parenthood, I am constantly learning and growing, equipping myself with the skills and determination needed to overcome any obstacles in my career journey. Just so happens that this would be my 20 year high school reunion and I’m now graduating from highschool and in college with high honors and a full time nursing student but college is far from free so winning this scholarship would make my life change in many positive ways Nevermind d the lives of my three beautiful daughters! I can not wait to become a guiding light for the parents of children /infants in the hospital whether it’s NICU , PICU, PEDS, or in mental health. I want to help our future and the future is our youth, NOW!

Juggling the responsibilities of parenthood while pursuing a career has been demanding.

Pursuing an education in nursing with a focus on addiction has helped me immensely as a recovering addict to find balance in my life, as well as PURPOSE! Turning my “mess into a message" hoping to support someone who struggles with addiction and giving hope so they can change their life, like I did 590 days ago! By gaining a deeper understanding of addiction, co-occurring mental health, its effects, and treatment options, I’ve developed a greater sense of empathy, compassion, and knowledge to support myself and others in their recovery journey. Working in nursing with a focus on addiction will provide me with a sense of purpose, fulfillment, and the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of those struggling with addiction. The dream of being a RN, goes as far back as I can remember. My mother needed care after she suffered an accident that caused slipped discs in her spine. At the tender age of 10, I sprang into action. Instinctively, I knew what to do and managed to perform confidently under extreme stress and pressure because nobody else was there to help that day, despite not fully understanding the situation. Since then, my family has often said, "Lauren will be a great nurse someday." Anytime something happens I always seem to be the good Samaritan, who happens to be on scene!
Unfortunately, due to family dysfunction-divorcing parents, and my mental health, I was unable to graduate from high school. I've suffered with mental health for most of my life and ADHD for my entire childhood. I developed a substance use disorder over the years, due to depression from low self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness because I was not successful and didn't ever believe that I would be. Picturing myself in college, a nursing career and a graduation ceremony all a dream that most likely wouldn't come true! Life changed for the better on 12/22/23 when I passed my HI-SET exam and earned my high school diploma! Coming up on May 31, 2024, that fairy tale will come true because I will be walking the stage, in cap & gown and flipping my tassel- MY graduation ceremony!
Since August 28, 2012, I have been actively engaged in my recovery journey. This dream of becoming a nurse in addiction has motivated me to remain dedicated to my recovery journey and to continue growing both personally and professionally.
Unfortunately, the impact of COVID-19 led to the closure of healthcare provider discontinuation of my depression medication regimen. As a result, my co-occurring mental health disorder exacerbated my substance use disorder, leading to a relapse in July 2022. However, I took immediate action to reestablish stability in my life by entering treatment on September 16, 2022, and initiating essential life changes.
Overall, pursuing my education in nursing with an addiction focus has contributed to my overall well-being, growth, and balance as a whole, but also as a recovering addict. Allowing me to use my experiences and knowledge to help others and support my recovery journey. I've gained a lot more self-love and confidence because I've accomplished several major personal goals this year that I've had for 20 years! Presently, I am diligently working towards my Associate degree in Nursing, with an expected graduation date in 2026. I am eager to continue my educational journey and contribute meaningfully to the field of healthcare. I am sincerely grateful for your consideration and support, which will allow me to focus on my academic pursuits without undue burden. Thank you for taking the time to consider my story.
