Erin Lanae's HBCU Excellence Scholarship
I chose Howard because of its strong International Affairs program. I have been interested in foreign policy since high school, and Howard’s program stood out to me because it is challenging and taken seriously. The faculty and students are clearly invested in the work, and the conversations feel real rather than performative. I also appreciated that Howard approaches international affairs from a perspective that includes Black experiences and global histories that are often overlooked elsewhere. My experience at Howard so far has pushed me to think more critically about global issues and policy. Classes are demanding, but they have helped me better understand how power and history shape international relations. Outside of class, being around people who are focused and driven has kept me motivated and grounded. Howard has given me an environment where I can focus on my academic interests without feeling out of place, and it has helped me grow in how I approach foreign policy and global issues in a more thoughtful and realistic way.
Ken Larson Memorial Scholarship
Hello! My name is Lena Webb, and I am currently a high school senior at Roosevelt High School. Ever since I was young, I have been deeply passionate about international affairs and languages. I desire to understand and address global issues and make a positive impact on the world. This passion has led me to aspire to pursue a career in the field of international affairs.
During my time at Roosevelt High School, I have been an active member of the Global Service and
Diplomacy department. Under the guidance of my dedicated teacher, Ms. Beer, I have had the opportunity to delve into various aspects of international relations, global diplomacy, and multicultural understanding. Ms. Beer's mentorship has played a crucial role in fostering and nurturing my interest in global affairs. Being a part of this department has provided me with the opportunity to travel to France as well as host students from other countries. These opportunities have really made an impact on my understanding of the world and myself.
As I prepare for the next chapter of my academic journey, I am looking forward to attending a four-year university with a strong international/global affairs program. I believe that this educational environment will provide me with the necessary knowledge and skills to pursue a career in Diplomacy, allowing me to travel and learn new languages. I would use my diplomacy skills to work in underserved communities in Francophone or Spanish-speaking countries due to my expertise.
In addition to my academic pursuits, I have dedicated significant time and effort to developing my language skills. I am proud to say that I am fluent in both French and Spanish. These language abilities not only allow me to engage with diverse communities but also enable me to foster meaningful relationships across different communities. I have been able to use my French skills during my Diplomacy trip to France and my Spanish skills during my Youth Ambassadors trip to Ecuador, funded by the U.S. Department of State.
While I am excited to pursue a higher education, I am also aware of the financial challenges that lie ahead. Securing this scholarship would not only alleviate the burden of basic college expenses but also help make my college dreams a reality. With the support of this scholarship, I am confident that I can continue to pursue my passion for international affairs and contribute to a more connected and compassionate global society. Thank you for considering my application.
