WinnerWhen I first entered high school, I didn’t really understand or want to pursue higher education. Around 10th grade I stopped going to school and started working as a cashier. I wanted to be independent and earn money so I could buy things I needed and wanted. Then I got pregnant, but my partner would provide financially for us, and I still didn’t think school was important for me. It wasn’t until my second pregnancy, and losing the support of my partner, that I then realized I was alone with two children. Being alone with my two kids was when I realized it was up to me to provide and give my children the opportunity to have a good future. It was then when I understood education is the key to success in life. This gave me the motivation I needed to complete high school and continue higher education.
I want to go to college to become skilled for a future career as a childcare worker. I have decided to study child development. This field focuses on how little ones develop, learn, and feel as they grow up. I have seen how important a caring adult can be, especially when they work with kids every day. Watching my mother work as a child care worker made me notice how babies and little kids learn new things from people who listen, explain, and give them chances to try. I want to learn how to create safe and fun places for kids to explore. I want to learn about healthy development, how to support kids who have different needs.
Also, this career will help me financially provide for my two kids. I want to study child development that will give me real chances to earn a steady paycheck and support my two children. This will also let me follow my passion. At the same time, I want to choose a degree that helps me be a good role model for my kids.
College will also give me ideas for helping my own kids succeed. I hope to use what I learn to make a difference in my community, too. I want to be there for the moments that matter, like helping future scholars get excited about reading, counting, and sharing with friends. By studying child development, I can grow into a strong, caring professional and a positive role model for others.
I want to be a role model for my two children; my daughter Sielani born January 6, 2024, and my son Juniel born October 26, 2025. As a teen mother, there were many times when I wanted to give up on my education. However, I know that I need to be the example my children need for them to succeed. I want to be able to show them never to give up, and if I completed high school and earned a college degree as a teen mother, they can do the same.
