Overcoming Adversity - Jack Terry Memorial Scholarship
Dr. Jack Terry’s journey is a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit. Surviving the Holocaust, losing his entire family, and rebuilding his life from nothing, he rose above unimaginable pain to become a healer, soldier, and mentor. His resilience and determination continue to inspire generations to overcome adversity including me. The story of Dr. Jack Terry deeply resonates with me—not only because of the unimaginable hardships he endured, but because of how he transformed pain into purpose. His resilience, determination, and commitment to giving back despite overwhelming odds is nothing short of extraordinary. Like Dr. Terry, I’ve learned that adversity doesn’t have to define you—it can refine you. Growing up in a low-income household, I quickly learned the value of hard work and resourcefulness. Financial hardship meant sacrificing things others might take for granted, like new clothes, extracurricular opportunities, or even basic equipment to pursue my passion. But I remained committed to my dreams of working in film and media production. I didn’t let limited resources stop me from creating short films, telling stories through photography, or learning how to edit using professional software. I taught myself new techniques, built a freelance photography business, and made the most out of every opportunity that came my way. One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that perseverance creates possibility. I became head of my school’s media and production teams, juggled leadership roles while taking dual credit college courses, and maintained a strong academic record. I’ve worked on everything from filming sports games to photographing local events, constantly growing as both a creator and a leader. These experiences have not only shaped my technical skills, but they’ve helped me find my voice and my purpose: to tell stories that matter—especially those that often go unheard. Like Dr. Terry, I believe in the power of storytelling to heal, inspire, and create meaningful change. My goal is to use my education in film and media to amplify stories of resilience, culture, and hope. I want to spotlight underrepresented communities and produce content that educates and unites. Whether through documentaries, interviews, or digital visual content, I want to create films that reflect the real world—its beauty, its struggle, and its diversity. This scholarship would not only help me afford the college tuition I need to continue my education, but support my mission to create films that show the real world and the different cultural depictions of it. Through my work, I hope to carry forward the legacy of Dr. Jack Terry by turning adversity into impact and storytelling into service.
    Coach Doc Ryan Memorial Scholarship
Throughout my high school career, I have consistently gone above and beyond what is expected of a typical student by actively pursuing leadership roles, professional development, and academic excellence, all while building a strong foundation for my future in media production and film. One of the most significant ways I have exceeded expectations is through my work in media and production. As the Head of both the Media Team and the Production Team at Terrell High School, I lead a group of students in filming, photographing, and editing content for major school events. This includes everything from varsity football games and pep rallies to promotional projects requested directly by our principal. I manage not only the technical aspects—like camera operation, audio, lighting, and editing—but also the coordination and creative direction of each project. These roles require a level of responsibility and professionalism far beyond a normal high school experience. I was also chosen as one of only two students to manage the school’s film and production program during the 2024–2025 academic year. This selective position has allowed me to further develop my leadership, technical, and creative skills while producing short films, recording events, and mentoring other students interested in the media field. Additionally, I’ve been fortunate to work outside of school as a freelance photographer, covering events like National Signing Day and sports showcases, and even assisting as a secondary shooter for a professional wedding photographer. An opportunity that taught me valuable real-world techniques in event coverage and client communication. Outside of media, I’m deeply involved in a variety of extracurriculars that reflect my drive and versatility. I am a 7-time Junior Olympic Qualifier in Track & Field through both USA and AAU programs, a District Champion, and a 2-time Regional Qualifier—all while maintaining a GPA of 97/3.7 and a class rank of 40th. I serve as a Student Council member, Student Ambassador, National Honor Society member, and have taken on executive leadership roles in student organizations. I also participate in Varsity Theatre and run a small modeling agency, which, while not an official business, has given me valuable experience in branding, marketing, and directing creative projects. I am also a dual credit student at TVCC, taking college-level courses to get ahead academically while continuing to push the boundaries of what I can achieve as a high school student. My IBC Certificate in Adobe Premiere Pro reflects the time and dedication I’ve invested in learning industry-standard tools and techniques. Not having has never stopped me from performing at my best, nor has it stopped me from taking every opportunity given. I truly believe the person that will succeed is the person who mixes their talent as well as hard work to pave a way for themselves. I also believe I represent this person. Due to my hard work I have received recommendation letters from Superintendents, as well as School board members. I will always work hard and strive for more than greatness regardless of what situation I am in. In every area of my life, academics, athletics, arts, and entrepreneurship, I strive to perform at the highest level and seek out opportunities to lead, create, and grow. I believe what sets me apart is not just what I’ve done, but the intention behind it: I am building the foundation for a lifelong career in film and media, and I approach every opportunity like I have no others. Receiving this grant would allow me to reinvest my time from Terrell High School to Texas State allowing me to open a new chapter in the book of life. Thank You!
