Bio

I am an older, returning student studying History online at Southern New Hampshire University. I am a divorced, first-time homeowner who was adopted at birth suffering from CRPS, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, and degenerative disc disease. I can't work and haven't worked in about 4 years. I am the daughter of an Anglican minister, and I recently lost both parents within 3 months of each other, and my brother passed away in 1990, leaving me to be the last member of our family. I am extremely low-income, and I have no job, and recently denied SSDI. I bought my current home after my father passed away on Zillow. I drove across the country to Nashville TN for a new start in my dad's 20-year-old SUV and my 4 dogs. This past April my dad's dog Shadow passed away. Laying on the floor with my dad's picture and his ashes above him on the fireplace mantle. It hurt me so much, it felt like I was losing my dad all over again. It's been a super tough year so far, but I am slowly getting back to semi-normal. I enjoy kayaking on the lake, just down the road from my house, and relaxing in my pool in the backyard. Sadly, Nashville doesn't seem to be the right fit for me, so I am currently selling my home and I have been looking for a new one in the Boone/Charlotte NC area. A home in the mountains near water is what I think I've been wanting. I am still attending my online classes, having just finished my second term while packing and searching for a new home online. Just a little bit stressful but I hope will soon be alleviated once I get settled.

Debra S. Jackson New Horizons Scholarship
I am embarking on a new educational journey at 55, fueled by a lifetime of experiences and a steadfast commitment to community service. Returning to education comes with unique challenges like adapting to new technology, managing time, and overcoming health and financial constraints. Despite facing personal trials such as divorce and health challenges, I am unwavering in my determination to create a new chapter for myself. With a profound passion for history, I am pursuing a BA in History to share its richness with others. This scholarship is critical for alleviating financial burdens and enabling me to focus wholeheartedly on my studies as I aspire to ignite curiosity and bridge generations through the power of history. My childhood was spent in a historic home built in 1850 by the inaugural agricultural ambassador to Japan. This unique setting cultivated my deep appreciation for history. My passion lies in preserving the past, not as a mere collection of events and dates but as a rich tapestry of human experiences. I am dedicated to bringing to light the lesser-known, fascinating stories that go beyond what is found in textbooks. For example, did you know that Edwin Booth, the brother of John Wilkes Booth, once prevented President Lincoln's son, Robert, from serious harm on a train platform in New Jersey just a few years before his brother assassinated the president? Or that the Tulsa Race Massacre is often omitted from school curriculums? These truths should not be concealed; they should ignite curiosity and provoke thought. While my involvement in community service has decreased compared to my youth, my dedication remains unwavering. I am committed to presenting history in an engaging and accessible way, shedding light on the unconventional, scandalous, and quirky aspects of history to spark curiosity in others. I aim to bring history to life through live reenactments, workshops, lectures, and outreach programs while offering digital experiences like virtual tours, podcasts, and interactive websites. This scholarship is my lifeline, helping to ease my financial burdens and allowing me to concentrate on my studies to become a torchbearer for history. I believe history becomes a living, breathing adventure that ignites curiosity and bridges generations. This scholarship is a financial aid, beacon, and lifeline. It will alleviate my financial burdens, enabling me to concentrate on my studies. With my BA in History, I am committed to becoming a torchbearer, ensuring the past isn't forgotten. I will teach, inspire, and kindle the same flame that drives me today. I honor my parents' legacy and embrace the future in this pursuit. My journey enriches my life and inspires those I will inspire in the future.

I've always been a firm believer in the profound influence that books have had on both my personal and professional development. Books serve as a treasure trove of knowledge, offering deep insights that help to hone my critical thinking skills and broaden my perspective. They possess the remarkable ability to fuel my creativity and arm me with invaluable wisdom for real-life situations. Diving into the rich tapestry of creation myths and archetypes from various cultures has significantly deepened my grasp of human psychology, symbolism, and common underlying themes. One particular masterpiece that has left an indelible mark on me is Joseph Campbell's "The Hero with a Thousand Faces," which adeptly showcases the universal structure of hero narratives across diverse cultures, shedding light on humanity's shared experiences. Exploring literature in the context of pivotal historical events, such as the Cold War or McCarthyism, has bestowed upon me profound insights into the dynamics of society and its historical backdrop. This exploration has not only enriched my empathy by exposing me to various perspectives but also fostered a deeper understanding of pressing societal issues. Diving into the captivating world of fiction has played an incredibly important role in shaping my ability to think imaginatively. By immersing myself in various works of fiction, I have not only nourished my creative thinking, but also sparked a continuous flow of innovative ideas. Additionally, this experience has significantly broadened my creative horizons, allowing me to explore and give life to fresh and original concepts, influencing my outlook on various aspects of life in meaningful ways. Books have undeniably left an indelible mark on both my personal and professional life, offering invaluable insights, motivation, and practical methodologies that have molded my aspirations. One exemplary work that stands out is "Atomic Habits" by James Clear, which underscores the transformative power of small, consistent actions that, compounded over time, yield significant results. This insightful book underscores the potential of incremental changes in making substantial progress. In the book "The Art of Setting Smart Goals," readers are provided with practical guidance on how to define specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound objectives. The author emphasizes the importance of these elements in effective goal setting and offers tools and strategies to help readers implement them in their personal and professional lives. Furthermore, in her book "The Desire Map," Danielle LaPorte suggests that instead of focusing solely on specific goals, it's important to identify the emotions we truly desire and use them as the guiding force behind our objectives. By aligning our goals with our core values and intrinsic desires, we can create a more meaningful and fulfilling journey towards success. In "Succeed: How We Can Reach Our Goals," author Heidi Grant Halvorson explores the fascinating intersection of psychology and goal achievement. She offers insights into the significant influence of mindset on motivation and success. Halvorson delves into the idea that framing goals with a growth mindset can significantly impact determination and success, shedding light on the psychological factors that play a crucial role in our ability to reach our goals. Finally, it is important to note that engaging in regular reading not only enhances your knowledge and understanding of the world, but it also has the power to influence and shape your perspective. This, in turn, equips you with the capability to make well-informed decisions and pursue meaningful objectives with confidence and insight.

What Could Go Wrong? In the heart of the captivating landscape sat the picturesque setting of Serendipity Falls, where ancient pine trees sway, and the rolling hills whisper tales of old; there stood an extraordinary emporium named "Arcane Antiquities." under the enigmatic ownership of the captivating and mysterious Elowen, renowned for her predilection for collecting an eclectic array of peculiar items. Within the walls of this fantastical shop, Elowen carefully curated a mesmerizing assortment of curious artifacts, from sparkling crystal balls and dusty tomes of forgotten knowledge to weathered talismans with unknown powers. Yet, concealed within this vast collection existed a small and unassuming wooden box that held a significance far more profound than its humble, unassuming exterior appearance suggested. Among the townsfolk, whispers abounded regarding the mysterious contents rumored to be held by Elowen its devoted custodian. It was said to be the essence of chaos, a modern-day equivalent of Pandora's box. Elowen fiercely guarded it, warding off curious visitors and deterring inquisitive passersby with cryptic warnings and enigmatic puzzles. She would often murmur, "Open it, and you shall unleash devastation upon the world." One fateful day, a young man named Jasper stumbled upon Arcane Antiquities by chance. His attention was immediately ensnared by a beautifully ornate box, its enigmatic aura that bewitched his senses. The box seemed to call out to him, promising secrets and adventures. Elowen, with her striking silver hair and piercing violet eyes, cautioned Jasper about the potential consequences of his actions. Driven by insatiable curiosity, Jasper's resolve overshadowed the weight of her ominous words. As Jasper stood in front of the exquisitely crafted box, contemplating his next move, he hesitated; Elowen's sage advice echoed in his mind. Despite his reservations, he found himself lifting the lid of the ornate box. In the blink of an eye, a breathtaking, mesmerizing whirlwind of vivid colors erupted from within, giving birth to an otherworldly maelstrom that seemed to distort the very fabric of reality. As the chaotic energy spread, the once-tranquil town of Serendipity Falls succumbed to its capricious influence, setting the stage for a series of inexplicable and surreal occurrences that defied all logic. In the midst of the chaos, Jasper found himself fully engulfed in the surreal madness that had engulfed the town. He was spotted riding an eccentric makeshift bicycle held together by a complex network of rubber bands, taking part in a whimsical tea party where the guests seemed to be invisible, and engaging in profound conversations with what appeared to be a sentient daffodil. Meanwhile, from the safety of her shop, Elowen quietly watched as the town endured the profound consequences of the unleashed unfathomable chaos. Elowen embarked on a daring adventure to pinpoint the source of the chaos and restore balance and harmony to the now chaotic town. Along the way, Jasper, who had undergone a surprising and bizarre transformation into part squirrel and part daffodil, joined her on this perilous journey. Together, they faced bizarre and nonsensical challenges at every turn. Ultimately, after traversing the bewildering landscape, Jasper stumbled upon a strange mirror at the heart of the swirling vortex. In that moment, he had a shocking realization – he himself was the embodiment of chaos. As Jasper's hand crashed into the mirror's surface, the once-solid facade shattered into countless shimmering shards, marking the restoration of reality to its natural order. The town of Serendipity Falls was finally free from the grip of chaos. Despite the return to normalcy, Elowen couldn't shake the unsettling feeling that Jasper would soon forget everything that had transpired. As life in the town resumed its usual rhythm, she immersed herself in deep contemplation, pondering the profound notion that perhaps chaos itself served as a poignant reminder of how life thrives on unpredictability, leaving the audience with a sense of reflection. Following the extraordinary events, Jasper bid farewell to the town of Serendipity Falls, feeling the memories of his remarkable experiences slipping away as he slept. However, during his slumber, he found himself drawn back to the extraordinary journey he had undertaken. Over time, Jasper realized that the aspects of life that seemed to court disaster often made existence truly extraordinary.

First, thank you for giving me this opportunity to share my story about losing a sibling. But I must first give you some background. My name is Ashley, and I am a 55-year-old nontraditional returning student pursuing my degree in History online from Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU). I began my journey with being adopted at a young age and welcomed into a loving family. I longed to learn more about my biological roots as I grew older. Utilizing DNA testing, I was able to reconnect with my birth family; my younger brother, Matthew, had also been adopted. Although we had different birth parents, we became siblings when Matthew joined our family when I was 3 years old. I wanted to be the best big sister ever; I read him stories and, according to old home movies, protected him when our younger cousin stole his stuffed toy cat. Matt and Heath were best friends and cousins growing up. Always up to mischief whenever the families got together for family gatherings. Our parents, both accomplished professionals in law and real estate, raised us in the picturesque town of Harvard in Northern Illinois on a 20-acre “gentleman’s farm” in a home built in 1850 by a Civil War Col who became the first ambassador of agriculture to Japan. When I was 14 and Matthew was 11, our family underwent a significant change when our father decided to pursue a calling as a minister, prompting us to relocate to Ambridge, PA. Tragically, Matthew's life was cut short in a devastating accident in Midwest, Wyoming, where he was fondly known as the "Ice Man" at Midwest High School. His passing, due to a fatal car accident at the age of 18, left an immeasurable void in our lives. The loss of Matthew has had a profound impact on me, I grappled with a profound sense of loss and yearned for the companionship and shared memories of my brother. I often contemplate what his life would have been like had he lived. I wonder about the hypothetical possibilities, such as whether he would have married his high school sweetheart, pursued his dream of becoming an architect, or if our sibling relationship would have evolved positively over time. His absence also weighs heavily on my children, who were very young at the time of his passing and never had the opportunity to form lasting memories with their Uncle Matt. My oldest child will never again hear him affectionately call her "Bad Baby." Transitioning from a small, close-knit community to a larger city during my high school years was a challenging experience. I encountered various obstacles and ultimately discontinued my education, but later persevered and obtained my High School diploma in Wyoming, graduating alongside my brother and 20 other classmates. Midwest was a very small Oil town. The impact of Matthew's untimely death has been enduring, leaving an indelible mark on our family and the community. However, amidst the hardships, I draw strength from the cherished memories of our time together. I am relieved to know or at least hope that my parents and my brother have been reunited, as both parents passed away recently. I am wholeheartedly dedicated to honoring my family's legacy by pursuing a degree in history. This journey bears a personal significance as it allows me to pay tribute to the enduring memory of my loved ones and our family's rich history.
