Ever since I was younger, I have always been the person people came to for comfort, support, and reassurance. I naturally care deeply about people, and as I got older, I realized I wanted to turn that into something bigger than myself. Nursing became the perfect path for me because it allows me to combine compassion with purpose. I do not just want a career where I clock in and out every day. I want a career where I can genuinely change lives, even in the smallest moments. I am currently a student at North Carolina Central University, and I will be transferring into the UNC Charlotte School of Nursing nursing program to continue pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. My ultimate goal is to become a neonatal nurse and later a neonatal nurse practitioner. Caring for newborns, especially babies in the NICU, is something I feel incredibly passionate about. Those babies are entering the world during some of the most uncertain and emotional moments for families, and I want to be the nurse who brings comfort, reassurance, and hope during that time. One of the moments that truly confirmed nursing was meant for me was completing my CNA license. That experience allowed me to step into healthcare in a real way and see how important nurses and healthcare workers are to patients and families. I learned how much simple acts of kindness matter. Something as small as listening to someone, helping them feel comfortable, or being patient with them can completely change their day. My CNA experience reminded me that healthcare is not just about treatment plans or medical terminology. It is about people. Throughout my college journey, I have pushed myself academically while also staying involved in my community. I have maintained a strong GPA, earned Dean’s List recognition, and balanced difficult science courses while preparing for nursing school. At times, the journey has been exhausting mentally, emotionally, and financially, but I never allowed those challenges to stop me. Instead, they motivated me even more because I know exactly why I am working so hard. Outside of school, serving others has always been important to me. I have volunteered through organizations like Note in the Pocket and worked with children at the YMCA, experiences that taught me patience, leadership, and empathy. I have also held leadership positions through student organizations and Girl Scouts, where I learned how important it is to advocate for others and create supportive spaces for people around me. Every experience I have had, whether in school, volunteering, or healthcare training, has shaped the type of nurse and person I want to become. Receiving this scholarship would mean more than financial support to me. It would be an investment in someone who is fully committed to making a difference through nursing. Nursing school comes with many expenses beyond tuition, especially during this transition into a rigorous nursing program, and this scholarship would help ease that burden so I can focus even more on succeeding academically and clinically. I know nursing is not an easy path, but I also know it is the path I am meant to take. I want to be remembered as the nurse who made people feel safe, cared for, and understood during vulnerable moments in their lives. With the support of this scholarship, I will continue working toward becoming the compassionate and dedicated nurse I have always dreamed of being.

One of the moments that confirmed nursing was the right path for me was earning my CNA license. Being able to learn hands-on patient care and step into a healthcare setting showed me that nursing is so much more than giving medicine or taking vitals. It is about being present for people during vulnerable moments, making them feel safe, and treating them with compassion even during difficult times. That experience made me even more certain that I want to dedicate my life to caring for others. My interest in nursing started long before college. I have always naturally been a nurturing person. I am the type of person who checks on others, listens carefully, and wants to help however I can. Over time, I realized those qualities connected perfectly with nursing. What draws me to nursing the most is the impact nurses have on people every single day. Nurses are often the people patients remember because they are there through fear, pain, recovery, and healing. I want to be the kind of nurse who makes patients feel heard, cared for, and comfortable during those moments. I am currently pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and will be transferring into the UNC Charlotte School of Nursing nursing program. My long-term goal is to become a neonatal nurse and eventually continue my education to become a neonatal nurse practitioner. Caring for newborns, especially babies in the NICU, is something I feel deeply passionate about. Those babies are entering the world during some of the hardest moments imaginable, and their families are often scared and overwhelmed. I want to be someone families can trust during that time. I want to provide not only medical care, but also reassurance, patience, and support. Throughout my journey, I have worked hard academically and personally to prepare for this career. I have maintained strong grades in college while balancing volunteer work and other responsibilities. I am proud to have earned Dean’s List recognition and A Honor Roll while completing challenging science and nursing prerequisite courses. I have also spent time volunteering with organizations like Note in the Pocket, where I helped support children and families in my community. Experiences like that reminded me how important compassion and service are, both inside and outside of healthcare. In addition to volunteering, I have had leadership experiences that helped shape who I am today. Through student leadership roles, Girl Scouts, and working with children at the YMCA, I learned how to communicate with different people, stay calm under pressure, and support others even when situations became stressful. Those experiences strengthened skills that are important in nursing, including patience, teamwork, and empathy. Nursing interests me because it combines science, compassion, trust, and human connection. It is a career where you never stop learning and where even small actions can make a lasting difference in someone’s life. I know the journey to becoming a nurse will continue to challenge me, but I also know this is the career I am meant to pursue. My experiences, volunteer work, CNA training, and passion for caring for others have all brought me closer to that goal, and I am excited to continue growing into the nurse I hope to become.

Hello, my name is Leah Guilford, and my dream is to become a neonatal nurse, caring for babies as they take their first breaths in this world. I have always been someone who naturally looks out for others, and over time I realized that nursing fits who I am. I truly believe every newborn deserves the best start in life, with care, patience, and the right support from the very beginning. As I have gotten older and started my journey in nursing school, my passion for this career has only continued to grow. As a neonatal nurse, I will be caring for some of the most fragile patients while also supporting their families during very emotional moments. I want to be someone parents feel comfortable with, someone they can trust to take care of their baby and also help them feel a little less scared. I understand that this job is not easy and comes with a lot of responsibility, but I am ready to put in the work and give my best every day. I want to be the type of nurse that people remember, not just because I did my job, but because I showed real care and compassion. I believe the best nurses treat every patient with the same level of respect and attention, no matter their situation. Being nurturing has always come naturally to me, and I know that will help me build strong connections with my patients and their families. I also know that healthcare is not something you do alone. It takes a strong team, and I work well with others to get things done. I can communicate clearly, stay calm when things get stressful, and think through problems without panicking. Those are all skills I know will help me in a fast paced environment like neonatal care. In the future, I plan to keep going until I become a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. I want to continue being hands on with patients while also taking on more responsibility and helping guide others in the field. I am especially passionate about making sure families feel supported every step of the way, because I know how important that is during such a vulnerable time. I am excited for what is ahead, and I am committed to making a difference. Nursing is not just a career for me, it is something that truly feels meant for me.
