    You Deserve It Scholarship
Growing up in the Bronx as the oldest of five children, I have always felt a deep responsibility to my family. My mom raised us on her own, and while I knew things were never easy, she did her best to make sure we didn’t feel the full weight of her struggles. She worked tirelessly, stretching every dollar, and never let us go without food or a safe place to sleep. She tried her hardest to protect us from the stress she carried, but as the oldest, I could see it. I knew how much she sacrificed for us, and it made me determined to build a better future for myself and for her. My father has been in and out of my life and rarely contributed, so the responsibility always fell on my mom. Being the oldest meant stepping in to help however I could, whether it was cooking, helping with homework, or guiding my siblings when my mom was at work. These experiences made me grow up quickly, but they also gave me resilience, patience, and a drive to succeed. Education is the path I see toward changing my life and my family’s future. I want to pursue a college degree so I can build a stable career, one that will not only give me security but also allow me to take care of my mom the way she has always taken care of me. She carried the weight of raising five children on her own, and I want to give her the peace of mind she deserves. This scholarship would make a huge difference by helping cover the cost of college and easing the financial pressure that has always followed us. With this support, I would be able to focus on my studies and work toward my career goals without adding more stress to my mom. I want to prove to her and to my siblings that the struggles we faced don’t define us they prepare us to succeed. With ambition, hard work, and the help of this scholarship, I know I can achieve my goals, build a stable future, and one day repay my mom for all she has done.

I grew up in a home where violence was something I had to get used to, even though no child should. My father was in and out of my life, and his presence always felt unpredictable. Sometimes he wasn’t there at all, and other times he showed up and brought nothing but tension. The only moments I remember feeling even a little safe were when the police were called and the chaos paused for a short while. That small sense of relief was something I held onto, and it’s one of the reasons I want to become a police officer. One night stands out more than any other. My dad decided to stay over, and instead of just being there like a father, he tried to take complete control. It didn’t make sense—he hadn’t been consistent in my life, but suddenly he was acting like he had authority over everything I did. I pushed back and told him no. That’s when he completely lost it. He started yelling, chasing me, and in the middle of it all, he shoved my mom down into the street. I was shaking and crying, barely able to breathe, but I managed to call the police. I thought that once they came, I would finally feel safe. But that’s not what happened. When the officers arrived, instead of taking the situation seriously, they started joking with my dad. They laughed with him, like they hadn’t just walked into a home full of fear and chaos. I remember standing there, frozen, staring at all of them with disgust. My mom was still hurting, I was still terrified, and the people who were supposed to protect us were treating it like a joke. That moment is burned into my memory, and it’s the reason I promised myself I would never be that kind of officer. Instead of making me bitter, that experience gave me a mission. I want to be different. I want to be the officer who listens when someone calls in fear, who takes the time to protect and reassure the people who need it most. I want to be the person who shows up and actually makes victims feel safe, not ignored. I know what it feels like to look at the people who are supposed to help and feel like you mean nothing to them. I never want anyone else to feel that way if I can help it. Becoming a police officer isn’t just a career choice for me, it’s personal. It comes from years of wanting safety and respect and not always receiving it. It comes from the promise I made to myself that I would be better than what I experienced. With this scholarship, I’ll be able to take the next step toward that goal. I’ll be able to use the hardest parts of my past to build a future where I can protect others the way I always wished someone had protected me.

Growing up in the Bronx and attending a public school with limited funding has shaped my story in many ways. I am proud of where I come from, but it has not been easy. My school did not offer many programs or extracurricular activities. Sometimes I worried about not having enough experiences to put on my resume when compared to students at schools with more opportunities. Instead of letting that stop me, I decided to help create something new. Along with a small group of classmates, I started a committee that planned events to make our school more enjoyable and connected. Even though we did not have a lot of resources, we found ways to bring students together. Planning these events taught me leadership, responsibility, and how to make a positive impact even when the odds are against you. During my sophomore year, my school introduced a new apprenticeship program. It was the first time anything like this had ever been offered, and I consider myself lucky to have been in the right place at the right time. Through that program, I was connected to Accenture, where I now work as a Youth Apprentice. This opportunity has been life changing. Working in a professional environment at a young age has given me skills in technology, teamwork, and business that most high school students do not get the chance to experience. It has not been easy to balance my apprenticeship, classes, and part time jobs, but it has taught me discipline and perseverance. More importantly, it showed me that opportunities can come when you least expect them, and if you are ready to work hard, you can turn them into something much bigger. The obstacles I have faced, from financial struggles to lack of resources at school, have only motivated me to keep pushing forward. I know that my education is the key to changing not only my future, but also the opportunities for my family. I want to prove that where you come from does not determine how far you can go. This scholarship would allow me to take the next step in my education with less financial stress. It would give me the chance to focus more on my classes and career goals instead of worrying about how to pay for college. My journey has taught me that hard work, resilience, and creativity can open doors that at first seem closed. With the support of this scholarship, I know I can continue building a future that reflects the effort I have put in and the community that raised me.
