My name is Layne McLean, and I am a high school senior at Tyler High School in Tyler, Texas. Since I was little, I’ve been prone to the idea of helping others, especially those who are most vulnerable. My interest in nursing comes from a personal place, one that started before I could even understand it myself. I was born with issues in my liver and spent the beginning of my life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). While I don’t remember those moments, I’ve heard many stories from my mom and dad. They told me how the nurses in the NICU not only took care of me, but also supported her emotionally during the terrifying moments. That care and compassion made a lasting impact on me and my family, and over time, it inspired me to want to become a neonatal nurse. I want to specialize in neonatal nursing because I know firsthand how critical those early moments of life are. Babies in the NICU are fighters, but they also need highly trained nurses to support them medically and emotionally. I’ve always believed that being a nurse means more than just knowing how to give a shot or check vital signs—it means showing up with patience, love, and the determination to fight for your patients when they can’t fight for themselves. Neonatal nursing, to me, is where science and heart come together. To prepare for this journey, I’ve focused on my education while also gaining real-life experiences that have strengthened my sense of responsibility and care for others. I’ve taken challenging science courses in high school to build a strong foundation, and I’m constantly trying to learn more about the medical field through reading and speaking with healthcare professionals. Outside of academics, I’ve dedicated time to community service, especially projects that involve helping children and families. Volunteering has not only taught me empathy, but also how to work as part of a team which is something that is essential in a hospital setting. Coming from a family of four girls, with financial struggles along the way, I’ve learned the value of hard work and persistence. My parents have always emphasized the importance of education, and I’ve watched my mom juggle her role as an educator and a mother with strength and grace. I know that becoming a nurse won’t be easy, but I’m prepared to give everything I must reach my goal. I’ve worked hard to maintain good grades, support my younger sisters, and stay focused on a future that includes making a difference in people’s lives. This scholarship would mean more than just financial support—it would be a step closer to turning my passion into a profession. With it, I can pursue my dream of becoming a neonatal nurse without placing more financial burden on my family. I want to be the kind of nurse who inspires hope, eases fear, and helps tiny fighters thrive. I believe that my experiences, both personal and academic, have prepared me for the challenges ahead and fueled a passion that is impossible to ignore. I’m ready to take this next step, not just for myself, but for the families I hope to serve in the future. I want to be the person who stands beside a worried parent and says, “We’re going to get through this.” Because I know what that kind of nurse can mean to someone, and I want to be that for others. Thank you for considering me for this scholarship, I am truly grateful for this opportunity and you time. Hope to hear from you soon!

Coming from a family of five girls, with financial struggles along the way, I’ve learned the value of hard work and persistence.

Education has always been a top priority in my family. Both sets of my grandparents were educators, and my mother is a Special Education teacher. Growing up in an environment where learning and teaching were deeply valued, I quickly understood the power of education in shaping one’s future. The influence of my family has inspired me to pursue my own academic dreams and make a meaningful impact on society through my education. However, despite my determination to further my education, financial challenges have made it difficult for me to pursue my college dreams and achieve my career aspirations. Coming from a large family, where I have three younger sisters, the financial strain of supporting all of us in pursuing higher education is something my parents constantly face. All of us are eager to further our education, participate in extracurricular activities, and prepare for careers that will allow us to contribute to our communities. However, the added costs of tuition, textbooks, and other college-related expenses can become overwhelming. As my parents already do so much for our family, I want to do my part in helping to alleviate some of the financial pressure they are under. My parents have worked tirelessly to provide for me and my siblings. Their sacrifices and dedication to ensuring that we receive a good education have had a profound impact on me. I am deeply grateful for the opportunities they have given me, and it is my hope that I can help reduce their stress by pursuing my education and securing a stable, meaningful career. I firmly believe that education is the key to overcoming obstacles, and by advancing my own education, I hope to create a better future for both me and my family. One of the career paths I am passionate about is nursing, specifically becoming a neonatal nurse. Throughout my life, I have always been drawn to healthcare, particularly the care of newborns. The idea of being able to help infants in their most vulnerable moments fills me with purpose and determination. I am committed to the rigorous educational journey required to become a neonatal nurse, and I am eager to make a positive difference in the lives of those who need care the most. However, pursuing a nursing degree, especially one that focuses on neonatal care, comes with significant costs. This is where the scholarship would make a crucial difference. By receiving this scholarship, I would be able to ease some of the financial burdens that weigh heavily on my family. It would allow me to focus more on my studies and less on the financial challenges that come with higher education. With this support, I can dedicate myself to my coursework and clinical training, knowing that I have the resources to pursue my goal of becoming a neonatal nurse. I am determined to give back to my community through my work, and this scholarship would be an essential step in helping me achieve that goal. I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to consider me as a recipient of this academic scholarship. It would be an honor to receive your support, and I am committed to making the most of the opportunity to further my education and contribute meaningfully to society. Thank you once again for your time and consideration.

Coming from a family of five girls, with financial struggles along the way, I’ve learned the value of hard work and persistence. My parents have always emphasized the importance of education, and I’ve watched my mom juggle her role as an educator and a mother with strength and grace. I know that becoming a nurse won’t be easy, but I’m prepared to give everything I have to reach my goal. I want to be the person who stands beside a worried parent and says, “We’re going to get through this.” Because I know what that kind of nurse can mean to someone and I want to be that for others. Thank you for considering me for this scholarship, I am truly grateful for this opportunity and you time and I hope to hear from you soon!

My name is Layne McLean and I am a high school senior from Tyler High School in Tyler Texas. Since I was young, I’ve been prone to the idea of helping others, especially those who are most vulnerable. My interest in nursing comes from a personal place, one that started before I could even understand it myself. I was born with issues in my liver and spent the beginning of my life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).While I don’t remember those moments, I’ve heard many stories from my mom and dad. They told me how the nurses in the NICU not only took care of me, but also supported her emotionally during the terrifying moments. That care and compassion made a lasting impact on me and my family, and over time, it inspired me to want to become a neonatal nurse.I want to specialize in neonatal nursing because I know firsthand how critical those early moments of life are. Kelly O. Memorial Nursing Scholarship
I firmly believe that education is the key to overcoming obstacles, and by advancing my own education, I hope to create a better future for both myself and my family.
