One book that has had a lasting impact on me is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. At first, I thought it was just another book I had to read for school, but by the time I finished it, I realized it was about so much more than the story itself. It challenged the way I think about people, fairness, and the importance of standing up for what you believe in, even when it’s difficult.
The lesson that stood out to me the most was empathy. One of the most memorable quotes in the book is when Atticus Finch tells Scout that you never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view. That idea has stayed with me because it’s something I try to practice in my own life. It’s easy to make assumptions about people based on what you see on the outside, but everyone is carrying experiences and challenges that others may never know about. Taking the time to understand someone instead of judging them can completely change the way you see them.
Reading this book also helped me understand what true character looks like. Atticus chooses to do what he knows is right, even when he knows people will disagree with him. He doesn’t let fear or public opinion determine his actions. That reminded me that success isn’t only measured by accomplishments or recognition. It’s also measured by the kind of person you choose to be when no one is watching. Integrity, honesty, and compassion are qualities that can have just as much of an impact as intelligence or talent.
As a first-generation college student majoring in marketing, these lessons have influenced the goals I have for my future. I want to build a career where I can use creativity to connect with people, but I also want to do it in a way that is genuine and ethical. Marketing is all about understanding people, listening to different perspectives, and building trust. The empathy I learned about in To Kill a Mockingbird is something I hope to carry into my future career, whether I’m working with clients, coworkers, or consumers.
The book has also reminded me to stay true to myself. There will always be situations where taking the easier path is tempting, but I’ve learned that growth comes from making choices that align with your values, even when they’re difficult. That mindset has helped me stay committed to my education, work hard toward maintaining a 4.0 GPA, and continue pursuing opportunities that will help me reach my goals.
Although I read To Kill a Mockingbird years ago, its message still influences the way I think and the person I hope to become. It taught me that empathy, integrity, and courage are not just important qualities in literature. They are qualities that shape how we live our lives, treat others, and make a positive difference in the world.

For a long time, I thought the way I felt was normal. I didn’t realize that constantly feeling sad, overwhelmed, or emotionally drained wasn’t something everyone experienced. I became really good at hiding it. I stayed busy with school, work, sports, and anything else that kept my mind occupied. From the outside, I looked like I had everything together, but internally, I was struggling in ways that were hard to explain.
Mental illness has affected almost every part of my life. It has made it difficult to enjoy moments that should have made me happy, and there were times when I questioned my own worth, even when I was doing everything “right.” I have always put a lot of pressure on myself to succeed because I felt like I had to prove something, not only to others but to myself.
Even through those struggles, I never stopped pushing forward. I have maintained a 4.0 GPA while working throughout college, and as a first-generation college student majoring in marketing, I have continued to chase opportunities that will help me build the future I want. Those accomplishments are important to me, but they do not tell the whole story. Behind every achievement were days when simply getting out of bed or believing in myself felt like the biggest challenge.
Living with mental illness has changed the way I see other people. It has taught me that you never truly know what someone else is going through. Someone can smile, succeed, and appear confident while quietly fighting battles that no one else can see. Because of that, I have become more compassionate and more intentional about treating others with kindness. A small act of understanding can mean more than we realize.
Although I still have difficult days, I have learned that healing is not about pretending everything is okay. It is about taking things one day at a time, asking for help when you need it, and continuing to move forward even when it feels difficult. I have started giving myself the same grace and patience that I so easily give to other people.
Mental illness has shaped who I am, but it does not define who I will become. It has made me stronger, more empathetic, and more determined to build a meaningful life. My experiences have shown me that resilience is not about never struggling. It is about refusing to let those struggles stop you from becoming the person you are meant to be.
Harvest Scholarship for Women Dreamers
My “Pie in the Sky” dream is to build a life where I am financially independent, creatively fulfilled, and able to use my marketing talent to help people and businesses grow. I want to build my own brand, my own marketing agency, and eventually own real estate that gives me long-term stability and freedom. It feels big, almost too big to admit out loud sometimes, but it also feels like the path I am meant to grow into. The older I get, the more I realize that I am at my best when I am creating, leading, and thinking ahead, and that small version of myself who was scared to dream big is slowly becoming someone who believes she can do it.
What sparked this dream was the moment I realized how much I genuinely enjoy creating things that connect people. Whether I am designing a website, building a brand concept, or helping someone figure out how to present themselves online, I light up inside. I love creativity, but even more, I love the strategy behind it. I love figuring out what people care about, what catches their attention, and what makes them feel understood. As a first-generation college student, I have had to figure out a lot on my own, and that independence pushed me to develop skills I did not even know I had. It taught me resilience, problem solving, and how to take initiative even when I feel unsure.
My dream grew even more real once I started majoring in marketing. The more I learn, the more I see how many opportunities exist for people who are willing to take risks and think outside the box. I also see how marketing can be used to help small businesses feel seen, to build community, and to create growth that lasts. I want to use my creativity and emotional intelligence to lift others while also building something of my own.
To reach this dream, I know I need courage, discipline, and community. The first step is finishing my degree at Northern Kentucky University while gaining as much real-world experience as I can. I have already started taking on creative projects, designing websites, and helping people with branding ideas, and each project helps me build confidence and a portfolio. My next steps will include internships, networking, and continuously improving my skills in digital marketing, design, communication, and entrepreneurship.
At the same time, I want to set myself up for long-term financial stability. I plan to earn my real estate license, learn about investment properties, and start building that side of my future early. Real estate and marketing fit together in a way that aligns perfectly with my strengths.
My “Pie in the Sky” dream is big, but it is not impossible. It requires courage, which I am learning every day. It requires creativity, which comes naturally to me. And it requires growth, which I am committed to. I may not have everything figured out yet, but I know I am on the path toward the life I imagine, one bold step at a time.
Future Green Leaders Scholarship
In an era marked by environmental crisis and global awareness, sustainability must be more than a buzzword, it must be a guiding principle in every professional field. For marketing, a discipline that shapes consumer behavior and influences global industries, the responsibility is especially urgent. My name is Layla Pangallo, and I am pursuing a career in marketing with a clear vision: to help shift the industry toward more ethical, environmentally responsible practices. I believe marketing can be a powerful force not only for business growth but also for social and ecological change.
Marketing holds an immense ability to shape the way people think, feel, and act. It impacts what consumers buy, what companies prioritize, and how industries evolve. Too often, marketing has been used to promote overconsumption and short-term profits at the expense of the environment. But I believe we can and must do better. By integrating sustainability into brand storytelling, campaign strategy, and consumer engagement, marketers have the unique opportunity to inspire more mindful behavior and drive support for sustainable products, services, and values.
My passion for marketing began with a fascination for communication, how a well-crafted message can resonate so deeply with people. But it’s my concern for the planet that has shaped the kind of marketer I aspire to become. I want to work with organizations that are committed to doing business differently: companies that reduce waste, value transparency, and invest in clean innovation. In the future, I see myself helping these companies tell their stories in compelling, honest, and impactful ways, helping consumers make better choices, and building trust through authenticity.
In the long term, I hope to specialize in sustainable brand strategy, guiding companies not just in how they market their products, but in how they align their marketing with their environmental and ethical values. Whether through promoting zero-waste packaging, encouraging circular economy practices, or raising awareness about climate issues, I want to ensure that the work I do contributes to a healthier planet. Marketing should never manipulate, it should educate, connect, and lead with purpose.
This scholarship represents more than financial support; it reflects a shared belief in a better future, one where ambition and sustainability are not at odds, but in harmony. It will allow me to pursue the education and experience I need to grow as a responsible, forward-thinking marketing professional. I am eager to learn, to lead, and to use my voice for positive change.
Thank you for considering my application. With your support, I will continue to turn my passion for marketing into a career that promotes progress, not just for companies, but for communities and our shared environment.
